Localized radial roll patterns in higher space dimensions

Localized roll patterns are structures that exhibit a spatially periodic profile in their center. When following such patterns in a system parameter in one space dimension, the length of the spatial interval over which these patterns resemble a periodic profile stays either bounded, in which case branches form closed bounded curves ("isolas"), or the length increases to infinity so that branches are unbounded in function space ("snaking"). In two space dimensions, numerical computations show that branches of localized rolls exhibit a more complicated structure in which both isolas and snaking occur. In this paper, we analyse the structure of branches of localized radial roll solutions in dimension 1+$\varepsilon$, with $0<\varepsilon\ll1$, through a perturbation analysis. Our analysis sheds light on some of the features visible in the planar case.

Stable Torsion Length

The stable torsion length in a group is the stable word length with respect to the set of all torsion elements. We show that the stable torsion length vanishes in crystallographic groups. We then give a linear programming algorithm to compute a lower bound for stable torsion length in free products of groups. Moreover, we obtain an algorithm that exactly computes stable torsion length in free products of finite groups. The nature of the algorithm shows that stable torsion length is rational in this case. As applications, we give the first exact computations of stable torsion length for nontrivial examples.

Characterization of Completions of Noncatenary Local Domains and Noncatenary Local UFDs

We find necessary and sufficient conditions for a complete local ring to be the completion of a noncatenary local (Noetherian) domain, as well as necessary and sufficient conditions for it to be the completion of a noncatenary local (Noetherian) unique factorization domain. We use our first result to demonstrate a large class of quasi-excellent domains that are not excellent, as well as a large class of catenary domains that are not universally catenary. We use our second result to find a larger class of noncatenary local UFDs than was previously known, and we show that there is no bound on how noncatenary a UFD can be.
