Indirect Image Registration with Large Diffeomorphic Deformations

The paper adapts the large deformation diffeomorphic metric mapping framework for image registration to the indirect setting where a template is registered against a target that is given through indirect noisy observations. The registration uses diffeomorphisms that transform the template through a (group) action. These diffeomorphisms are generated by solving a flow equation that is defined by a velocity field with certain regularity. The theoretical analysis includes a proof that indirect image registration has solutions (existence) that are stable and that converge as the data error tends so zero, so it becomes a well-defined regularization method. The paper concludes with examples of indirect image registration in 2D tomography with very sparse and/or highly noisy data.

Community Detection by $L_0$-penalized Graph Laplacian

Community detection in network analysis aims at partitioning nodes in a network into $K$ disjoint communities. Most currently available algorithms assume that $K$ is known, but choosing a correct $K$ is generally very difficult for real networks. In addition, many real networks contain outlier nodes not belonging to any community, but currently very few algorithm can handle networks with outliers. In this paper, we propose a novel model free tightness criterion and an efficient algorithm to maximize this criterion for community detection. This tightness criterion is closely related with the graph Laplacian with $L_0$ penalty. Unlike most community detection methods, our method does not require a known $K$ and can properly detect communities in networks with outliers. Both theoretical and numerical properties of the method are analyzed. The theoretical result guarantees that, under the degree corrected stochastic block model, even for networks with outliers, the maximizer of the tightness criterion can extract communities with small misclassification rates even when the number of communities grows to infinity as the network size grows. Simulation study shows that the proposed method can recover true communities more accurately than other methods. Applications to a college football data and a yeast protein-protein interaction data also reveal that the proposed method performs significantly better.

Differential Network Analysis via the Lasso Penalized D-Trace Loss

Biological networks often change under different environmental and genetic conditions. Understanding how these networks change becomes an important problem in biological studies. In this paper, we model the network change as the difference of two precision matrices and propose a novel loss function for estimating the precision matrix difference. Under a new irrepresentability condition, we show that the new loss function with the lasso penalty can give consistent estimates in high-dimensional setting for sub-Gaussian and polynomial-tailed distributions. An efficient algorithm is developed based on the alternating direction method to solve the optimization problem. Simulation studies and a real data analysis about colorectal cancer show that the proposed method outperforms other available methods.

Floquet Semimetal with Floquet-band Holonomy

Exotic topological states of matter such as Floquet topological insulator or Floquet Weyl semimetal can be induced by periodic driving. This work proposes a Floquet semimetal with Floquet-band holonomy. That is, the system is gapless, but as a periodic parameter viewed as quasimomentum of a synthetic dimension completes an adiabatic cycle, each Floquet band as a whole exchanges with other Floquet bands. The dynamical manifestations of such Floquet-band holonomy are studied. Under open boundary conditions, we discover anomalous chiral edge modes localized only at one edge, winding around the entire quasienergy Brillouin zone, well separated from bulk states, and possessing holonomy different from bulk states. These remarkable properties are further exploited to realize quantized or half-quantized edge state pumping.

Exact decoherence-free state of two distant quantum systems in a non-Markovian environment

Decoherence-free state (DFS) encoding supplies a useful way to avoid the detrimental influence of the environment on quantum information processing. The DFS was previously well established in either the two subsystems locating at the same spatial position or the dynamics under the Born--Markovian approximation. Here, we investigate the exact DFS of two spatially separated quantum systems consisting of two-level systems or harmonic oscillators coupled to a common non-Markovian zero-temperature bosonic environment. The exact distance-dependent DFS and the explicit criterion for forming the DFS are obtained analytically, which reveals that the DFS can arise only in one-dimensional environment. It is remarkable to further find that the DFS is just the system-reduced state of the famous bound state in the continuum (BIC) of the total system predicted by Wigner and von Neumann. On the one hand our result gives insight into the physical nature of the DFS, and on the other hand it supplies an experimentally accessible scheme to realize the mathematically curious BIC in the standard quantum optical systems.

Theoretical Exploration on the Magnetic Properties of Ferromagnetic Metallic Glass: An Ising Model on Random Recursive Lattice

The ferromagnetic Ising spins are modeled on a recursive lattice constructed from random-angled rhombus units with stochastic configurations, to study the magnetic properties of the bulk Fe-based metallic glass. The integration of spins on the structural glass model well represents the magnetic moments in the glassy metal. The model is exactly solved by the recursive calculation technique. The magnetization of the amorphous Ising spins, i.e. the glassy metallic magnet is investigated by our modeling and calculation on a theoretical base. The results show that the glassy metallic magnets has a lower Curie temperature, weaker magnetization, and higher entropy comparing to the regular ferromagnet in crystal form. These findings can be understood with the randomness of the amorphous system, and agrees well with others' experimental observations.

Floquet control of quantum dissipation in spin chains

Controlling the decoherence induced by the interaction of quantum system with its environment is a fundamental challenge in quantum technology. Utilizing Floquet theory, we explore the constructive role of temporal periodic driving in suppressing decoherence of a spin-1/2 particle coupled to a spin bath. It is revealed that, accompanying the formation of a Floquet bound state in the quasienergy spectrum of the whole system including the system and its environment, the dissipation of the spin system can be inhibited and the system tends to coherently synchronize with the driving. It can be seen as an analog to the decoherence suppression induced by the structured environment in spatially periodic photonic crystal setting. Comparing with other decoherence control schemes, our protocol is robust against the fluctuation of control parameters and easy to realize in practice. It suggests a promising perspective of periodic driving in decoherence control.

The Thermodynamic Transitions of Antiferromagnetic Ising Model on the Fractional Multi-branched Husimi Recursive Lattice

The multi-branched Husimi recursive lattice has been extended to a virtual structure with fractional numbers of branches joined on one site. Although the lattice is undrawable in real space, the concept is consistent with regular Husimi lattice. The Ising spins of antiferromagnetic interaction on such a sets of lattices were calculated to check the critical temperatures ($T_{c}$) and ideal glass transition temperatures ($T_{k}$) variation with fractional branch numbers. Besides the similar results of two solutions representing the stable state (crystal) and metastable state (supercooled liquid) and indicating the phase transition temperatures, the phase transitions show a well-defined shift with branch number variation. Therefore the fractional branch number as a parameter can be used as an adjusting tool in constructing a recursive lattice model to describe real systems.

Anomalous decoherence in a dissipative two-level system

We study systematically the non-Markovian decoherence dynamics of a dissipative two-level system, i.e., the so-called spin-boson model. It is interesting to find that the decoherence tends to be inhibited with the increase of the coupling strength between the system and the reservoir, which is contrary to the common recognition that a stronger coupling always induces a severer decoherence. This is attributed to the occurrence of a quantum phase transition (QPT). The relationship between this QPT and conventional delocalized-localized QPT is also discussed. Our result suggests a useful control method to overcome the detrimental effects of the reservoir to the system.

A note on Ξ_c(3055)^+ and Ξ_c(3123)^+

Babar Collaboration announced two new excited charmed baryons $Ξ_c(3055)^+$ and $Ξ_c(3123)^+$. We study their strong decays assuming they are D-wave states. Some assignments are excluded by comparing our numerical results with the experimental values of the total widths of $Ξ_c(3055)^+$ and $Ξ_c(3123)^+$. We also suggest some possible decay modes, which will be helpful to determine the properties of $Ξ_c(3055)^+$ and $Ξ_c(3123)^+$.

Strong decays of charmed baryons

There has been important experimental progress in the sector of heavy baryons in the past several years. We study the strong decays of the S-wave, P-wave, D-wave and radially excited charmed baryons using the $^3P_0$ model. After comparing the calculated decay pattern and total width with the available data, we discuss the possible internal structure and quantum numbers of those charmed baryons observed recently.
