Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Terahertz Communications toward 6G

Terahertz (THz) communications have emerged as a promising candidate to support the heavy data traffic and exploding network capacity in the future 6G wireless networks. However, THz communications are facing many challenges for practical implementation, such as propagation loss, signal blockage, and hardware cost. In this article, an emerging paradigm of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted THz communications is analyzed, to address the above issues, by leveraging the joint active and passive beamforming to enhance the communication quality and reduce overheads. Aiming at practical implementation, an overview of the currently available approaches of realizing THz active/passive beam steering at transmitter and IRS is presented. Based on these approaches, a beam training strategy for establishing joint beamforming is then investigated in THz communications. Moreover, various emerging and appealing 6G scenarios that integrate IRS into THz communications are envisioned. Open challenges and future research directions for this new paradigm are finally highlighted.

Learning-based Prediction, Rendering and Transmission for Interactive Virtual Reality in RIS-Assisted Terahertz Networks

The quality of experience (QoE) requirements of wireless Virtual Reality (VR) can only be satisfied with high data rate, high reliability, and low VR interaction latency. This high data rate over short transmission distances may be achieved via abundant bandwidth in the terahertz (THz) band. However, THz waves suffer from severe signal attenuation, which may be compensated by the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology with programmable reflecting elements. Meanwhile, the low VR interaction latency may be achieved with the mobile edge computing (MEC) network architecture due to its high computation capability. Motivated by these considerations, in this paper, we propose a MEC-enabled and RIS-assisted THz VR network in an indoor scenario, by taking into account the uplink viewpoint prediction and position transmission, MEC rendering, and downlink transmission. We propose two methods, which are referred to as centralized online Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) and distributed Federated Averaging (FedAvg), to predict the viewpoints of VR users. In the uplink, an algorithm that integrates online Long-short Term Memory (LSTM) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) is deployed to predict the locations and the line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight statuses of the VR users over time. In the downlink, we further develop a constrained deep reinforcement learning algorithm to select the optimal phase shifts of the RIS under latency constraints. Simulation results show that our proposed learning architecture achieves near-optimal QoE as that of the genie-aided benchmark algorithm, and about two times improvement in QoE compared to the random phase shift selection scheme.

Localization in Power-Constrained Terahertz-Operating Software-Defined Metamaterials

Software-Defined Metamaterials (SDMs) show a strong potential for advancing the engineered control of electromagnetic waves. As such, they are envisioned to enable a variety of exciting applications, among others in the domains of smart textiles, high-resolution structural monitoring, and sensing in challenging environments. Many of the applications envisage deformations of the SDM structures, such as their bending, stretching or rolling, which implies that the locations of metamaterial elements will be changing relative to one another. In this paper, we argue that if the metamaterial elements would be accurately localizable, this location information could potentially be utilized for enabling novel SDM applications, as well as for optimizing the control of the elements themselves. To enable their localization, we assume that these elements are controlled wirelessly through a Terahertz (THz)-operating nanonetwork. We consider the elements to be power-constrained, with their sole powering option being to harvest energy from different environmental sources. By means of simulation, we demonstrate sub-millimeter accuracy of the two-way Time of Flight (ToF)-based localization, as well as high availability of the service (i.e., consistently more than 80% of the time), which is a result of the low energy consumed in the localization process. Finally, we qualitatively characterize the latency of the proposed localization service, as well as outline several challenges and future research directions.

Hybrid Spherical- and Planar-Wave Channel Modeling and DCNN-powered Estimation for Terahertz Ultra-massive MIMO Systems

The Terahertz band is envisioned to meet the demanding 100 Gbps data rates for 6G wireless communications. Aiming at combating the distance limitation problem with low hardware-cost, ultra-massive MIMO with hybrid beamforming is promising. However, relationships among wavelength, array size and antenna spacing give rise to the inaccuracy of planar-wave channel model (PWM), while an enlarged channel matrix dimension leads to excessive parameters of applying spherical-wave channel model (SWM). Moreover, due to the adoption of hybrid beamforming, channel estimation (CE) needs to recover high-dimensional channels from severely compressed channel observation. In this paper, a hybrid spherical- and planar-wave channel model (HSPM) is investigated and proved to be accurate and efficient by adopting PWM within subarray and SWM among subarray. Furthermore, a two-phase HSPM CE mechanism is developed. A deep convolutional-neural-network (DCNN) is designed in the first phase for parameter estimation of reference subarrays, while geometric relationships of the remaining channel parameters between reference subarrays are leveraged to complete CE in the second phase. Extensive numerical results demonstrate the HSPM is accurate at various communication distances, array sizes and carrier frequencies. The DCNN converges fast and achieves high accuracy with 5.2 dB improved normalized-mean-square-error compared to literature methods, and owns substantially low complexity.

Joint Inter-path and Intra-path Multiplexing for Terahertz Widely-spaced Multi-subarray Hybrid Beamforming Systems

Terahertz (THz) communications with multi-GHz bandwidth are envisioned as a key technology for 6G systems. Ultra-massive (UM) MIMO with hybrid beamforming architectures are widely investigated to provide a high array gain to overcome the huge propagation loss. However, most of the existing hybrid beamforming architectures can only utilize the multiplexing offered by the multipath components, i.e., inter-path multiplexing, which is very limited due to the spatially sparse THz channel. In this paper, a widely-spaced multi-subarray (WSMS) hybrid beamforming architecture is proposed, which improves the multiplexing gain by exploiting a new type of intra-path multiplexing provided by the spherical-wave propagation among k widely-spaced subarrays, in addition to the inter-path multiplexing. The resulting multiplexing gain of WSMS architecture is k times of the existing architectures. To harness WSMS hybrid beamforming, a novel design problem is formulated by optimizing the number of subarrays, subarray spacing, and hybrid beamforming matrices to maximize the spectral efficiency, which is decomposed into two subproblems. An optimal closed-form solution is derived for the first hybrid beamforming subproblem, while a dominant-line-of-sight-relaxation algorithm is proposed for the second array configuration subproblem. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the WSMS architecture and proposed algorithms substantially enhance the spectral efficiency and energy efficiency.

Coverage Analysis for 3D Terahertz Communication Systems

We conduct novel coverage probability analysis of downlink transmission in a three-dimensional (3D) terahertz (THz) communication (THzCom) system. In this system, we address the unique propagation properties in THz band, e.g., absorption loss, super-narrow directional beams, and high vulnerability towards blockage, which are fundamentally different from those at lower frequencies. Different from existing studies, we characterize the performance while considering the effect of 3D directional antennas at both access points (APs) and user equipments (UEs), and the joint impact of the blockage caused by the user itself, moving humans, and wall blockers in a 3D environment. Under such consideration, we develop a tractable analytical framework to derive a new expression for the coverage probability by examining the regions where dominant interferers (i.e., those can cause outage by themselves) can exist, and the average number of interferers existing in these regions. Aided by numerical results, we validate our analysis and reveal that ignoring the impact of the vertical heights of THz devices in the analysis leads to a substantial underestimation of the coverage probability. We also show that it is more worthwhile to increase the antenna directivity at the APs than at the UEs, to produce a more reliable THzCom system.

Channel Measurement and Path-Loss Characterization for Low-Terahertz Indoor Scenarios

TeraHertz (THz) communications are envisioned as a promising technology, owing to its unprecedented multi-GHz bandwidth. In this paper, wideband channel measurement campaigns at 140 GHz and 220 GHz are conducted in indoor scenarios including a meeting room and an office room. Directional antennas are utilized and rotated for resolving the multi-path components (MPCs) in the angular domain. Comparable path loss values are achieved in the 140 and 220 GHz bands. To investigate the large-scale fading characteristics for indoor THz communications, single-band close-in path loss models are developed. To further analyze the dependency on the frequency, two multi-band path loss models are analyzed, i.e., alpha-beta-gamma (ABG) and multi-frequency CI model with a frequency-weighted path loss exponent (CIF), between which the ABG model demonstrates a better fit with the measured data. Moreover, a coherent beam combination that constructively sums the signal amplitudes from various arrival directions can significantly reduce the path loss, in contrast with a non-coherent beam combination.

Channel Measurement and Ray-Tracing-Statistical Hybrid Modeling for Low-Terahertz Indoor Communications

TeraHertz (THz) communications are envisioned as a promising technology, owing to its unprecedented multi-GHz bandwidth. One fundamental challenge when moving to new spectrum is to understand the science of radio propagation and develop an accurate channel model. In this paper, a wideband channel measurement campaign between 130 GHz and 143 GHz is investigated in a typical meeting room. Directional antennas are utilized and rotated for resolving the multi-path components (MPCs) in the angular domain. With careful system calibration that eliminates system errors and antenna effects, a realistic power delay profile is developed. Furthermore, a combined MPC clustering and matching procedure with ray-tracing techniques is proposed to investigate the cluster behavior and wave propagation of THz signals. In light of the measurement results, physical parameters and insights in the THz indoor channel are comprehensively analyzed, including the line-of-sight path loss, power distributions, temporal and spatial features, and correlations among THz multi-path characteristics. Finally, a hybrid channel model that combines ray-tracing and statistical methods is developed for THz indoor communications. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid channel model shows good agreement with the measurement and outperforms the conventional statistical and geometric-based stochastic channel model in terms of the temporal-spatial characteristics.

Hybrid Beamforming for Terahertz Wireless Communications: Challenges, Architectures, and Open Problems

Terahertz (THz) communications are regarded as a pillar technology for the sixth generation (6G) wireless systems, by offering multi-ten-GHz bandwidth. To overcome the short transmission distance and huge propagation loss, ultra-massive (UM) MIMO systems that employ sub-millimeter wavelength antennas array are proposed to enable an enticingly high array gain. In the UM-MIMO systems, hybrid beamforming stands out for its great potential in promisingly high data rate and reduced power consumption. In this paper, challenges and features of the THz hybrid beamforming design are investigated, in light of the distinctive THz peculiarities. Specifically, we demonstrate that the spatial degree-of-freedom (SDoF) is less than 5, which is caused by the extreme sparsity of the THz channel. The blockage problem caused by the huge reflection and scattering losses, as high as 15 dB or over, is studied. Moreover, we analyze the challenges led by the array containing 1024 or more antennas, including the requirement for intelligent subarray architecture, strict energy efficiency, and propagation characterization based on spherical-wave propagation mechanisms. Owning up to hundreds of GHz bandwidth, beam squint effect could cause over 5~dB array gain loss, when the fractional bandwidth exceeds 10%. Inspired by these facts, three novel THz-specific hybrid beamforming architectures are presented, including widely-spaced multi-subarray, dynamic array-of-subarrays, and true-time-delay-based architectures. We also demonstrate the potential data rate, power consumption, and array gain capabilities for THz communications. As a roadmap of THz hybrid beamforming design, multiple open problems and potential research directions are elaborated.

Hybrid Beamforming for Terahertz Multi-Carrier Systems over Frequency Selective Fading

We propose novel hybrid beamforming schemes for the terahertz (THz) wireless system where a multi-antenna base station (BS) communicates with a multi-antenna user over frequency selective fading. Here, we assume that the BS employs sub-connected hybrid beamforming and multi-carrier modulation to deliver ultra high data rate. We consider a three-dimensional wideband THz channel by incorporating the joint effect of molecular absorption, high sparsity, and multi-path fading, and consider the carrier frequency offset in multi-carrier systems. With this model, we first propose a two-stage wideband hybrid beamforming scheme which includes a beamsteering codebook searching algorithm for analog beamforming and a regularized channel inversion method for digital beamforming. We then propose a novel wideband hybrid beamforming scheme with two digital beamformers. In this scheme, an additional digital beamformer is developed to compensate for the performance loss caused by the constant-amplitude hardware constraints and the difference of channel matrices among subcarriers. Furthermore, we consider imperfect channel state information (CSI) and propose a probabilistic robust hybrid beamforming scheme to combat channel estimation errors. Numerical results demonstrate the benefits of our proposed schemes for the sake of practical implementation, especially considering its high spectral efficiency, low complexity, and robustness against imperfect CSI.

Multi-Connectivity for Indoor Terahertz Communication with Self and Dynamic Blockage

We derive new expressions for the connection probability and the average ergodic capacity to evaluate the performance achieved by multi-connectivity (MC) in an indoor ultra-wideband terahertz (THz) communication system. In this system, the user is affected by both self-blockage and dynamic human blockers. We first build up a three-dimensional propagation channel in this system to characterize the impact of molecular absorption loss and the shrinking usable bandwidth nature of the ultra-wideband THz channel. We then carry out new performance analysis for two MC strategies: 1) Closest line-of-sight (LOS) access point (AP) MC (C-MC), and 2) Reactive MC (R- MC). With numerical results, we validate our analysis and show the considerable improvement achieved by both MC strategies in the connection probability. We further show that the C-MC and R-MC strategies provide significant and marginal capacity gain relative to the single connectivity strategy, respectively, and increasing the number of the users associated APs imposes completely different affects on the capacity gain achieved by the C-MC and R-MC strategies. Additionally, we clarify that our analysis allows us to determine the optimal density of APs in order to maximize the capacity gain.

Combating the Distance Problem in the Millimeter Wave and Terahertz Frequency Bands

In the millimeter wave (30-300 GHz) and Terahertz (0.1-10 THz) frequency bands, high spreading loss and molecular absorption often limit the signal transmission distance and coverage range. In this paper, four directions to tackle the crucial problem of distance limitation are investigated, namely, a physical layer distance-aware design, ultra-massive MIMO communication, reflectarrays, and intelligent surfaces. Additionally, the potential joint design of these technologies is proposed to combine the benefits and possibly further extend the communication distance. Qualitative analyses and quantitative simulations are provided to illustrate the benefits of the proposed techniques and demonstrate the feasibility of mm-wave and THz band communications up to 100 meters in both line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight areas.

Spectrum Sensing in Cooperative Cognitive Radio Networks with Partial CSI

We develop an efficient algorithm for cooperative spectrum sensing in a relay based cognitive radio network. We consider a stochastic model where data is sent from the Base Station (BS) of the Primary User (PU). The data is relayed by the Secondary Users (SU) to the SU BS. The SU BS has only partial CSI knowledge of the wireless channels. In order to obtain the optimal decision rule based on Likelihood Ratio Test (LRT), the marginal likelihood under each hypothesis needs to be evaluated pointwise. These, however, cannot be obtained analytically due to the intractability of the integrals. Instead, we approximate these quantities by utilising the Laplace method. Performance is evaluated via numerical simulations and it is shown that the proposed spectrum sensing scheme can achieve superior results to the energy detection scheme.
