Reconfigurable Wearable Antenna for 5G Applications using Nematic Liquid Crystals

The antenna is one of the key building blocks of many wearable electronic device, and its functions include wireless communications, energy harvesting and radiative wireless power transfer (WPT). In an effort to realise lightweight, autonomous and battery-less wearable devices, we demonstrate a reconfigurable antenna design for 5G wearable applications that require ultra-low driving voltages ($0.4$-$0.6\,$V) and operate over a high frequency range ($3.3$-$3.8\,$GHz). For smart glasses application, previous antenna designs were `fixed' and mounted on the eyeglass frame itself. Here, we demonstrate a reconfigurable design that could be achieved on the lens itself, using an anisotropic liquid crystal (LC) material. We demonstrate how LC alignment and electric field patterns strongly influence the tuning capabilities of these antennas in the gigahertz range and present a smart, reconfigurable spiral antenna system with a LC substrate.

Flows of 3-edge-colorable cubic signed graphs

Bouchet conjectured in 1983 that every flow-admissible signed graph admits a nowhere-zero 6-flow which is equivalent to the restriction to cubic signed graphs. In this paper, we proved that every flow-admissible $3$-edge-colorable cubic signed graph admits a nowhere-zero $10$-flow. This together with the 4-color theorem implies that every flow-admissible bridgeless planar signed graph admits a nowhere-zero $10$-flow. As a byproduct, we also show that every flow-admissible hamiltonian signed graph admits a nowhere-zero $8$-flow.

Optimal deterministic remote state preparation via a non-maximally entangled channel without additional quantum resources

In this paper, we reinvestigate remote state preparation by using the prepared non-maximally entangled channel. An innovative remote state preparation protocol is developed for deterministically preparing information encoded in quantum states without additional consumption of quantum resources. We have increased the success probability of preparing a d-dimensional quantum state to 1 via a non-maximally entangled quantum channel. A feasibly experimental scheme is also designed to realize the above-mentioned deterministic scheme. This work provides a valuable method to address decoherence and environmental noises in the practicalization of quantum communication tasks.

Gas Column Density Distribution of Molecular Clouds in the Third Quadrant of the Milky Way

We have obtained column density maps for an unbiased sample of 120 molecular clouds in the third quadrant of the Milky Way mid-plane (b$\le |5|^{\circ}$) within the galactic longitude range from 195$^{\circ}$ to 225$^{\circ}$, using the high sensitivity $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO ($J=1-0$) data from the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) project. The probability density functions of the molecular hydrogen column density of the clouds, N-PDFs, are fitted with both log-normal (LN) function and log-normal plus power-law (LN+PL) function. The molecular clouds are classified into three categories according to their shapes of N-PDFs, i.e., LN, LN+PL, and UN (unclear), respectively. About 72\% of the molecular clouds fall into the LN category, while 18\% and 10\% into the LN+PL and UN categories, respectively. A power-law scaling relation, $σ_s\propto N_{H_2}^{0.44}$, exists between the width of the N-PDF, $σ_s$, and the average column density, $N_{H_2}$, of the molecular clouds. However, $σ_s$ shows no correlation with the mass of the clouds. A correlation is found between the dispersion of normalized column density, $σ_{N/\rm }$, and the sonic Mach number, $\mathcal{M}$, of molecular clouds. Overall, as predicted by numerical simulations, the N-PDFs of the molecular clouds with active star formation activity tend to have N-PDFs with power-law high-density tails.

Frame-wise Action Representations for Long Videos via Sequence Contrastive Learning

Prior works on action representation learning mainly focus on designing various architectures to extract the global representations for short video clips. In contrast, many practical applications such as video alignment have strong demand for learning dense representations for long videos. In this paper, we introduce a novel contrastive action representation learning (CARL) framework to learn frame-wise action representations, especially for long videos, in a self-supervised manner. Concretely, we introduce a simple yet efficient video encoder that considers spatio-temporal context to extract frame-wise representations. Inspired by the recent progress of self-supervised learning, we present a novel sequence contrastive loss (SCL) applied on two correlated views obtained through a series of spatio-temporal data augmentations. SCL optimizes the embedding space by minimizing the KL-divergence between the sequence similarity of two augmented views and a prior Gaussian distribution of timestamp distance. Experiments on FineGym, PennAction and Pouring datasets show that our method outperforms previous state-of-the-art by a large margin for downstream fine-grained action classification. Surprisingly, although without training on paired videos, our approach also shows outstanding performance on video alignment and fine-grained frame retrieval tasks. Code and models are available at https://github.com/minghchen/CARL_code.

Writable spin wave nanochannels in an artificial-spin-ice-mediated ferromagnetic thin film

Magnonics, which employs spin-waves to transmit and process information, is a promising venue for low-power data processing. One of the major challenges is the local control of the spin-wave propagation path. Here, we introduce the concept of writable magnonics by taking advantage of the highly flexible reconfigurability and rewritability of artificial spin ice systems. Using micromagnetic simulations, we show that globally switchable spin-wave propagation and the locally writable spin-wave nanochannels can be realized in a ferromagnetic thin film underlying an artificial pinwheel spin ice. The rewritable magnonics enabled by reconfigurable spin wave nanochannels provides a unique setting to design programmable magnonic circuits and logic devices for ultra-low power applications.

Molecular Clouds Associated with {H \small{II}} regions and Candidates within l = 106.65$^\circ$ to 109.50$^\circ$ and b = ${-}$1.85$^\circ$ to 0.95$^\circ$

We present a large-scale simultaneous survey of the CO isotopologues ($\rm {}^{12}{CO}$, $\rm{}^{13}{CO}$, and $\rm{C}{}^{18}{O}$) J = 1 ${-}$ 0 line emission toward the Galactic plane region of l = 106.65$^\circ$ to 109.50$^\circ$ and b = ${-}$1.85$^\circ$ to 0.95$^\circ$ using the Purple Mountain Observatory 13.7 m millimeter-wavelength telescope. Except for the molecular gas in the solar neighborhood, the emission from the molecular gas in this region is concentrated in the velocity range of [${-}$60, ${-}$35] $\rm km~s^{-1}$. The gas in the region can be divided into four clouds, with mass in the range of $\sim$10$^{3}$ to 10$^{4}$\,${M_{\sun}}$. We have identified 25 filaments based on the $\rm {}^{13}{CO}$ data. The median excitation temperature, length, line mass, line width, and virial parameter of the filaments are 10.89 K, 8.49 pc, 146.11 ${M}_{\odot}~ \rm pc^{-1}$, 1.01 $\rm km~s^{-1}$, and 3.14, respectively. Among these filaments, eight have virial parameters of less than 2, suggesting that they are gravitationally bound and can lead to star formation. Nineteen {H \small {II}} regions or candidates have previously been found in the region and we investigate the relationships between these {H \small {II}} regions/candidates and surrounding molecular clouds in detail. Using morphology similarity and radial velocity consistency between {H \small {II}} regions/candidates and molecular clouds as evidence for association, and raised temperature and velocity broadening as signatures of interaction, we propose that 12 {H \small {II}} regions/candidates are associated with their surrounding molecular clouds. In the case of the {H \small {II}} region of S142, the energy of the {H \small {II}} region is sufficient to maintain the turbulence in the surrounding molecular gas.

Valley Piezoelectric Mechanism for Interpreting and Optimizing Piezoelectricity in Quantum Materials via Anomalous Hall Effect

Quantum materials have exhibited attractive electro-mechanical responses, but their piezoelectric coefficients are far from satisfactory due to the lack of fundamental mechanisms to benefit from the quantum effects. We discovered the valley piezoelectric mechanism that is absent in traditional piezoelectric theory yet promising to overcome this challenge. A theoretical model was developed to elucidate the valley piezoelectricity as the Valley Hall effect driven by pseudoelectric field, which can be significant in quantum systems with broken time reversal symmetry. Consistent tight-binding and density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations validate the model and unveil the crucial dependence of valley piezoelectricity on valley splitting, hybridization energy, bandgap, and Poisson ratio. Doping, passivation, and external stress are proposed as rational strategies to optimize piezoelectricity, with a more than 130% increase of piezoelectricity demonstrated by DFT simulations. The general valley piezoelectric model bridges the gap between electro-mechanical response and quantum effects, which opens an opportunity to achieve outstanding piezoelectricity in quantum materials via optimizing spin-valley and spin-orbit couplings.

Engineering the microwave to infrared noise photon flux for superconducting quantum systems

Electromagnetic filtering is essential for the coherent control, operation and readout of superconducting quantum circuits at milliKelvin temperatures. The suppression of spurious modes around transition frequencies of a few GHz is well understood and mainly achieved by on-chip and package considerations. Noise photons of higher frequencies -- beyond the pair-breaking energies -- cause decoherence and require spectral engineering before reaching the packaged quantum chip. The external wires that pass into the refrigerator and go down to the quantum circuit provide a direct path for these photons. This article contains quantitative analysis and experimental data for the noise photon flux through coaxial, filtered wiring. The attenuation of the coaxial cable at room temperature and the noise photon flux estimates for typical wiring configurations are provided. Compact cryogenic microwave low-pass filters with CR-110 and Esorb-230 absorptive dielectric fillings are presented along with experimental data at room and cryogenic temperatures up to 70 GHz. Filter cut-off frequencies between 1 to 10 GHz are set by the filter length, and the roll-off is material dependent. The relative dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability for the Esorb-230 material in the pair-breaking frequency range of 75 to 110 GHz are measured, and the filter properties in this frequency range are calculated. The estimated dramatic suppression of the noise photon flux due to the filter proves its usefulness for experiments with superconducting quantum systems.

Self-Secure Capacity-Achieving Feedback Schemes of Gaussian Multiple-Access Wiretap Channels with Degraded Message Sets

The Schalkwijk-Kailath (SK) scheme, which achieves the capacity of the point-to-point white Gaussian channel with feedback, is secure by itself and also achieves the secrecy capacity of the Gaussian wiretap channel with feedback, i.e., the SK scheme is a self-secure capacity-achieving (SSCA) feedback scheme for the Gaussian wiretap channel. For the multi-user wiretap channels, recently, it has been shown that Ozarow's capacity-achieving feedback scheme for the two-user Gaussian multiple-access channel (GMAC) is the SSCA feedback scheme for the two-user Gaussian multiple-access wiretap channel (GMAC-WT). In this paper, first, we propose a capacity-achieving feedback scheme for the two-user GMAC with degraded message sets (GMAC-DMS), and show that this scheme is the SSCA feedback scheme for the two-user GMAC-WT with degraded message sets (GMAC-WT-DMS). Next, we extend the above scheme to the two-user GMAC-DMS with noncausal channel state information at the transmitters (NCSIT), and show that the extended scheme is capacity-achieving and also a SSCA feedback scheme for the two-user GMAC-WT-DMS with NCSIT. Finally, we derive outer bounds on the secrecy capacity regions of the two-user GMAC-WT-DMS with or without NCSIT, and numerical results show the rate gains by the feedback.

The discovery of the largest gas filament in our Galaxy, or a new spiral arm?

Using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), we detect a giant HI filamentary structure in the sky region of 307$.\!\!^{\circ}$7 $<$ $α$ $<$ 311$.\!\!^{\circ}$0 and 40$.\!\!^{\circ}$9 $<$ $δ$ $<$ 43$.\!\!^{\circ}$4. The structure has a velocity range of $-$170 km s$^{-1}$ to $-$130 km s$^{-1}$, and a mean velocity of $-$150 km s$^{-1}$, putting it to a Galactocentric distance of 22 kpc. The HI structure has a length of 1.1 kpc, which appears to be so far the furthest and largest giant filament in the Galaxy and we name it Cattail. Its mass is calculated to be 6.5 $\times$ 10$^4$ M$_{\odot}$ and the linear mass density is 60 M$_{\odot}$ pc$^{-1}$. Its width is 207 pc, corresponding to an aspect ratio of 5:1. Cattail possesses a small velocity gradient (0.02 km s$^{-1}$ pc$^{-1}$) along its major axis. Together with the HI4PI data, we find that Cattail could have an even larger length, up to 5 kpc. We also identify another new elongated structure to be the extension into the Galactic first quadrant of the Outer Scutum-Centaurus (OSC) arm, and Cattail appears to be located far behind the OSC. The question about how such a huge filament is produced at the extreme Galactic location remains open. Alternatively, Cattail might be part of a new arm beyond the OSC, though it is puzzling that the structure does not fully follow the warp of the Galactic disk.

Suppressing laser phase noise in an optomechanical system

We propose a scheme to suppress the laser phase noise without increasing the optomechanical single-photon coupling strength. In the scheme, the parametric amplification terms, created by Kerr and Duffing nonlinearities, can restrain laser phase noise and strengthen the effective optomechanical coupling, respectively. Interestingly, decreasing laser phase noise leads to increasing thermal noise, which is inhibited by bringing in a broadband-squeezed vacuum environment. To reflect the superiority of the scheme, we simulate quantum memory and stationary optomechanical entanglement as examples, and the corresponding numerical results demonstrate that the laser phase noise is extremely suppressed. Our method can pave the way for studying other quantum phenomena.

Exploration and Exploitation: Two Ways to Improve Chinese Spelling Correction Models

A sequence-to-sequence learning with neural networks has empirically proven to be an effective framework for Chinese Spelling Correction (CSC), which takes a sentence with some spelling errors as input and outputs the corrected one. However, CSC models may fail to correct spelling errors covered by the confusion sets, and also will encounter unseen ones. We propose a method, which continually identifies the weak spots of a model to generate more valuable training instances, and apply a task-specific pre-training strategy to enhance the model. The generated adversarial examples are gradually added to the training set. Experimental results show that such an adversarial training method combined with the pretraining strategy can improve both the generalization and robustness of multiple CSC models across three different datasets, achieving stateof-the-art performance for CSC task.

EntrapNet: a Blockchain-Based Verification Protocol for Trustless Computing

In this paper, we propose a blockchain-based computing verification protocol, called EntrapNet, for distributed shared computing networks, an emerging underlying network for many internet of things (IoT) applications. EntrapNet borrows the idea from the practice of entrapment in criminal law to reduce the possibility of receiving incorrect computing results from trustless service providers who have offered the computing resources. Furthermore, we mathematically optimize EntrapNet to deal with the fundamental tradeoff of a network: security and efficiency. We present an asymptotic optimal solution to this optimization. It will be seen that EntrapNet can be performed as an independent and low-cost layer atop any trustless network that requires outsourced computing, thus making secure computing affordable and practical.

Tailoring magnetization reversal of a single-domain bar nanomagnet via its end geometry

Nanoscale single-domain bar magnets are building blocks for a variety of fundamental and applied mesoscopic magnetic systems, such as artificial spin ices, magnetic shape-morphing microbots as well as magnetic majority logic gates. The magnetization reversal switching field of the bar nanomagnets is a crucial parameter that determines the physical properties and functionalities of their constituted artificial systems. Previous methods on tuning the magnetization reversal switching field of a bar nanomagnet usually rely on modifying its aspect ratio, such as its length, width and/or thickness. Here, we show that the switching field of a bar nanomagnet saturates when extending its length beyond a certain value, preventing further tailoring of the magnetization reversal via aspect ratios. We showcase highly tunable switching field of a bar nanomagent by tailoring its end geometry without altering its size. This provides an easy method to control the magnetization reversal of a single-domain bar nanomagnet. It would enable new research and/or applications, such as designing artificial spin ices with additional tuning parameters, engineering magnetic microbots with more flexibility as well as developing magnetic quantum-dot cellular automata systems for low power computing.

Convergence analysis of inexact descent algorithm for multiobjective optimizations on Riemannian manifolds without curvature constraints

We study the convergence issue for inexact descent algorithm (employing general step sizes) for multiobjective optimizations on general Riemannian manifolds (without curvature constraints). Under the assumption of the local convexity/quasi-convexity, local/global convergence results are established. On the other hand, without the assumption of the local convexity/quasi-convexity, but under a Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz-like condition, local/global linear convergence results are presented, which seem new even in Euclidean spaces setting and improve sharply the corresponding results in [24] in the case when the multiobjective optimization is reduced to the scalar case. Finally, for the special case when the inexact descent algorithm employing Armijo rule, our results improve sharply/extend the corresponding ones in [3,2,38].

Symmetry properties and widths of the filamentary structures in the Orion A giant molecular cloud

We identify 225 filaments from an H$_2$ column density map constructed using simultaneous $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O (J=1-0) observations carried out as a part of the MWISP project. We select 46 long filaments with lengths above 1.2 pc to analyze the filament column density profiles. We divide the selected filaments into 397 segments and calculate the column density profiles for each segment. The symmetries of the profiles are investigated. The proportion of intrinsically asymmetrical segments is 65.3$\%$, and that of intrinsically symmetrical ones is 21.4$\%$. The typical full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the intrinsically symmetrical filament segments is $\sim$ 0.67 pc with the Plummer-like fitting, and $\sim$ 0.50 pc with the Gaussian fitting, respectively. The median FWHM widths derived from the second-moment method for intrinsically symmetrical and asymmetrical profiles are $\sim$ 0.44 and 0.46 pc, respectively. Close association exists between the filamentary structures and the YSOs in the region.

Molecular Clouds in the Second Quadrant of the Milky Way Mid-plane from l$=$104$.\!\!^{\circ}$75 to l=119$.\!\!^{\circ}$75 and b=$-$5$.\!\!^{\circ}$25 to b=5$.\!\!^{\circ}$25

We have studied the properties of molecular clouds in the second quadrant of the Milky Way Mid-plane from l$=$104$.\!\!^{\circ}$75 to l$=$119$.\!\!^{\circ}$75 and b$=-$5$.\!\!^{\circ}$25 to b$=$5$.\!\!^{\circ}$25 using the $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O $J=1-0$ emission line data from the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting project (MWISP). We have identified 857 and 300 clouds in the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO spectral cubes, respectively, using the DENDROGRAM + SCIMES algorithms. The distances of the molecular clouds are estimated and the physical properties like masses, sizes, and surface densities of the clouds are tabulated. The molecular clouds in the Perseus arm are about 30$-$50 times more massive and 4$-$6 times larger than the clouds in the Local arm. This result, however, is likely biased by distance selection effects. The surface densities of the clouds are enhanced in the Perseus arm with an average value of $\sim$100 M$_{\odot}$ pc$^{-2}$. We selected the 40 most extended ($>$0.35 arcdeg$^2$) molecular clouds from the $^{12}$CO catalog to build the H$_2$ column density probability distribution function (N-PDF). About 78\% of the N-PDFs of the selected molecular clouds are well fitted with log-normal functions with only small deviations at high-densities which correspond to star-forming regions with scales of $\sim$1-5 pc in the Local arm and $\sim$5-10 pc in the Perseus arm. About 18\% of the selected molecular clouds have power-law N-PDFs at high-densities. In these molecular clouds, the majority of the regions fitted with the power-law correspond to molecular clumps of sizes of $\sim$1 pc or filaments of widths of $\sim$1 pc.
