Shell evolution in neutron-rich carbon isotopes: Unexpected enhanced role of neutron-neutron correlation

Full shell-model diagonalization has been performed to study the structure of neutron-rich nuclei around $^{20}$C. We investigate in detail the roles played by the different monopole components of the effective interaction in the evolution of the N=14 shell in C, N and O isotopes. It is found that the relevant neutron-neutron monopole terms, $V^{nn}_{d_{5/2}d_{5/2}}$ and $V^{nn}_{s_{1/2}s_{1/2}}$, contribute significantly to the reduction of the N=14 shell gap in C and N isotopes in comparison with that in O isotopes. The origin of this unexpectedly large effect, which is comparable with (sometimes even larger than) that caused by the proton-neutron interaction, is related to the enhanced configuration mixing in those nuclei due to many-body correlations. Such a scheme is also supported by the large B(E2) value in the nucleus $^{20}$C which has been measured recently.

Analytic proof of partial conservation of seniority in $j=9/2$ shells

A partial conservation of the seniority quantum number in $j=9/2$ shells has been found recently in a numerical application. In this paper a complete analytic proof for this problem is derived as an extension of the work by Zamick and P. Van Isacker [Phys. Rev. C 78 (2008) 044327]. We analyze the properties of the non-diagonal matrix elements with the help of the one-particle and two-particle coefficients of fractional parentage (cfp's). It is found that all non-diagonal (and the relevant diagonal) matrix elements can be re-expressed in simple ways and are proportional to certain one-particle cfp's. This remarkable occurrence of partial dynamic symmetry is the consequence of the peculiar property of the $j=9/2$ shell, where all $v=3$ and 5 states are uniquely defined.

Effects of formation properties in one-proton radioactivity

It is shown that the proton formation probability, extracted from experimental data corresponding to one-proton radioactivity, is divided into two regions when plotted as a function of an universal parameter. This parameter is derived from a microscopic description of the decay process. In this way we explain the systematics of proton emission half-lives. At the same time the formation probability is shown to be a useful quantity to determine the deformation property of the mother nucleus.

Isovector channel of quark-meson-coupling model and its effect on symmetry energy

The non-relativistic approximation of the quark-meson-coupling model has been discussed and compared with the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model which includes spin exchanges. Calculations show that the spin-exchange interaction has important effect on the descriptions of finite nuclei and nuclear matter through the Fock exchange. Also in the quark-meson-coupling model, it is the Fock exchange that leads to a nonlinear density-dependent isovector channel and changes the density-dependent behavior of the symmetry energy.

Spin-aligned neutron-proton pair mode in atomic nuclei

Shell model calculations using realistic interactions reveal that the ground and low-lying yrast states of the $N=Z$ nucleus $^{92}_{46}$Pd are mainly built upon isoscalar neutron-proton pairs each carrying the maximum angular momentum J=9 allowed by the shell $0g_{9/2}$ which is dominant in this nuclear region. This structure is different from the ones found in the ground and low-lying yrast states of all other even-even nuclei studied so far. The low-lying spectrum of excited states generated by such correlated neutron-proton pairs has two distinctive features: i) the levels are almost equidistant at low energies and ii) the transition probability $I\rightarrow I-2$ is approximately constant and strongly selective. This unique mode is shown to replace normal isovector pairing as the dominating coupling scheme in $N=Z$ nuclei approaching the doubly-magic nucleus $^{100}$Sn.

Analysis of the unbound spectrum of $^{12}$Li

The unbound nucleus $^{12}$Li is evaluated by studying three-neutron one-proton excitations within the multistep shell model in the complex energy plane. It is found that the ground state of this system consists of an antibound $2^-$ state. A number of narrow states at low energy are found which ensue from the coupling of resonances in $^{11}$Li to continuum states close to threshold.

The anomalous $^{14}$C-dating $β$ decay problem revisited

The anomalous inhibition of $^{14}$C-dating $β$ decay rate is restudied in terms of shell-model calculations in the $jj$ coupling scheme with both realistic and empirical Hamiltonians. It is seen that the accidental cancellation of the decay strength is dominated by the mixing effect of two configurations of the final state wave function, $|0p^{-2}_{1/2}>$ and $|0p_{3/2}^{-1}0p_{1/2}^{-1}>$. By decomposing the effective interactions into different tensor components, it is clearly seen that the mixing is largely induced by the tensor force. The failure of realistic calculations in reproducing the inhibition may be related to its ill description of the monopole component rather than the tensor force.

Partial conservation of seniority in $j=9/2$ shell: Analytic and numerical studies

Recent studies show that for systems with four identical fermions in the $j=9/2$ shell two special states, which have seniority $v=4$ and total spins I=4 and 6, are eigenstates of any two-body interaction. These states have good seniority for an arbitrary interaction. In this work an analytic proof is given to this peculiar occurrence of partial conservation of seniority which is the consequence of the special property of certain coefficients of fractional parentage. Further calculations did not reveal its existence in systems with other $n$ and/or $I$ for shells with $j\leq15/2$.

Decoupling of valence nucleons in configuration-interaction shell model approach

The unusual ratio of the neutron and proton transition matrix elements, $M_n/M_p$, may indicate the exotic feature of decoupled neutron and proton density distributions. In this contribution we show that these transition matrix elements are not the same as the ones calculated within the configuration-interaction shell model approach.

Alternate proof of the Rowe-Rosensteel proposition and seniority conservation

For a system with three identical nucleons in a single-$j$ shell, the states can be written as the angular momentum coupling of a nucleon pair and the odd nucleon. The overlaps between these non-orthonormal states form a matrix which coincides with the one derived by Rowe and Rosensteel [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 87}, 172501 (2001)]. The propositions they state are related to the eigenvalue problems of the matrix and dimensions of the associated subspaces. In this work, the propositions will be proven from the symmetric properties of the $6j$ symbols. Algebraic expressions for the dimension of the states, eigenenergies as well as conditions for conservation of seniority can be derived from the matrix.

Abrupt changes in alpha decay systematics as a manifestation of collective nuclear modes

An abrupt change in $α$ decay systematics around the N=126 neutron shell closure is discussed. It is explained as a sudden hindrance of the clustering of the nucleons that eventually form the $α$ particle. This is because the clustering induced by the pairing mode acting upon the four nucleons is inhibited if the configuration space does not allow a proper manifestation of the pairing collectivity.

Calculation of the spectrum of 12Li by using the multistep shell model method in the complex energy plane

The unbound nucleus $^{12}$Li is evaluated by using the multistep shell model in the complex energy plane assuming that the spectrum is determined by the motion of three neutrons outside the $^9$Li core. It is found that the ground state of this system consists of an antibound $1/2^+$ state and that only this and a $1/2^-$ and a $5/2^+$ excited states are physically meaningful resonances.

Energy expressions for n=3 and 4 systems in a single-j shell

For systems with three and four fermions within a single-j shell, analytical expressions for the state energies are presented from a decomposition of the angular momentum. In some important cases the expressions acquire a very simple form. The expression may help us in understanding the structure of isomeric states. The decomposition also makes it possible to construct the algebraic condition for conservation of seniority.

Microscopic mechanism of charged-particle radioactivity and generalization of the Geiger-Nuttall law

A linear relation for charged-particle emissions is presented starting from the microscopic mechanism of the radioactive decay. It relates the logarithms of the decay half-lives with two variables, called $χ'$ and $ρ'$, which depend upon the $Q$-values of the outgoing clusters as well as the masses and charges of the nuclei involved in the decay. This relation explains well all known cluster decays. It is found to be a generalization of the Geiger-Nuttall law in $α$ radioactivity and therefore we call it the universal decay law. Predictions on the most likely emissions of various clusters are presented by applying the law over the whole nuclear chart. It is seen that the decays of heavier clusters with non-equal proton and neutron numbers are mostly located in the trans-lead region. The emissions of clusters with equal protons and neutrons, like $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O, are possible in some neutron-deficient nuclei with $Z\geq54$.

Universal decay law in charged-particle emission and exotic cluster radioactivity

A linear universal decay formula is presented starting from the microscopic mechanism of the charged-particle emission. It relates the half-lives of monopole radioactive decays with the $Q$-values of the outgoing particles as well as the masses and charges of the nuclei involved in the decay. This relation is found to be a generalization of the Geiger-Nuttall law in $α$ radioactivity and explains well all known cluster decays. Predictions on the most likely emissions of various clusters are presented.
