Revealing the Origin of Luminescence Center in 0D Cs4PbBr6 Perovskite

Zero dimensional perovskite Cs4PbBr6 has attracted considerable attention recently not only because of its highly efficient green photoluminescence (PL), but also its two highly debated opposing mechanisms of the luminescence: embedded CsPbBr3 nanocrystals versus intrinsic Br vacancy states. After a brief discussion on the root cause of the controversy, we provide sensitive but non-invasive methods that can not only directly correlate luminescence with the underlying structure, but also distinguish point defects from embedded nanostructures. We first synthesized both emissive and non-emissive Cs4PbBr6 crystals, obtained the complete Raman spectrum of Cs4PbBr6 and assigned all Raman bands based on density functional theory simulations. We then used correlated Raman-PL as a passive structure-property method to identify the difference between emissive and non-emissive Cs4PbBr6 crystals and revealed the existence of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals in emissive Cs4PbBr6. We finally employed a diamond anvil cell to probe the response of luminescence centers to hydrostatic pressure. The observations of fast red-shifting, diminishing and eventual disappearance of both green emission and Raman below Cs4PbBr6 phase transition pressure of ~3 GPa is compatible with CsPbBr3 nanocrystal inclusions as green PL emitters and cannot be explained by Br vacancies. The resolution of this long-lasting controversy paves the way for further device applications of low dimensional perovskites, and our comprehensive optical technique integrating structure-property with dynamic pressure response is generic and can be applied to other emerging optical materials to understand the nature of their luminescent centers.

From spinon band topology to the symmetry quantum numbers of monopoles in Dirac spin liquids

The interplay of symmetry and topology has been at the forefront of recent progress in quantum matter. Here we uncover an unexpected connection between band topology and the description of competing orders in a quantum magnet. Specifically we show that aspects of band topology protected by crystalline symmetries determine key properties of the Dirac spin liquid (DSL) which can be defined on the honeycomb, square, triangular and kagomé lattices. At low energies, the DSL on all these lattices is described by an emergent Quantum Electrodynamics (QED$_3$) with $N_f=4$ flavors of Dirac fermions coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field. However the symmetry properties of the magnetic monopoles, an important class of critical degrees of freedom, behave very differently on different lattices. In particular, we show that the lattice momentum and angular momentum of monopoles can be determined from the charge (or Wannier) centers of the corresponding spinon insulator. We also show that for DSLs on bipartite lattices, there always exists a monopole that transforms trivially under all microscopic symmetries owing to the existence of a parent SU(2) gauge theory. We connect our results to generalized Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorems and also derive the time-reversal and reflection properties of monopoles. Our results indicate that recent insights into free fermion band topology can also guide the description of strongly correlated quantum matter.

Markov Decision Process-based Resilience Enhancement for Distribution Systems: An Approximate Dynamic Programming Approach

Because failures in distribution systems caused by extreme weather events directly result in consumers' outages, this paper proposes a state-based decision-making model with the objective of mitigating loss of load to improve the distribution system resilience throughout the unfolding events. The sequentially uncertain system states, e.g., feeder line on/off states, driven by the unfolding events are modeled as Markov states, and the probabilities from one Markov state to another Markov state throughout the unfolding events are determined by the component failure caused by the unfolding events. A recursive optimization model based on Markov decision processes (MDP) is developed to make state-based actions, i.e., system reconfiguration, at each decision time. To overcome the curse of dimensionality caused by enormous states and actions, an approximate dynamic programming (ADP) approach based on post-decision states and iteration is used to solve the proposed MDP-based model. IEEE 33-bus system and IEEE 123-bus system are used to validate the proposed model.

Type-II Ising Pairing in Few-Layer Stanene

Spin-orbit coupling has proven indispensable in realizing topological materials and more recently Ising pairing in two-dimensional superconductors. This pairing mechanism relies on inversion symmetry breaking and sustains anomalously large in-plane polarizing magnetic fields whose upper limit is expected to diverge at low temperatures, although experimental demonstration of this has remained elusive due to the required fields. In this work, the recently discovered superconductor few-layer stanene, i.e. epitaxially strained $α$-Sn, is shown to exhibit a new type of Ising pairing between carriers residing in bands with different orbital indices near the $Γ$-point. The bands are split as a result of spin-orbit locking without the participation of inversion symmetry breaking. The in-plane upper critical field is strongly enhanced at ultra-low temperature and reveals the sought for upturn.

Electronic structures of air-exposed few-layer black phosphorus by optical spectroscopy

The electronic structure of few-layer(FL) black phosphorus(BP) sensitively depends on the sample thickness, strain and doping. In this paper, we show that it is also vulnerable to air-exposure. The oxidation of BP caused by air-exposure gives several optical signatures, including the broadening of resonance peaks and increased Stokes shift between infrared (IR) absorption and photoluminescence (PL) peaks. More importantly, air exposure causes blue shifts of all resonance peaks in IR absorption and PL spectra, with more prominent effects for thinner samples and higher order subband transitions. Our study alludes a convenient and exotic way for band-structure engineering of FL-BP through controllable air-exposure or defect creation.

Fully Supervised Speaker Diarization

In this paper, we propose a fully supervised speaker diarization approach, named unbounded interleaved-state recurrent neural networks (UIS-RNN). Given extracted speaker-discriminative embeddings (a.k.a. d-vectors) from input utterances, each individual speaker is modeled by a parameter-sharing RNN, while the RNN states for different speakers interleave in the time domain. This RNN is naturally integrated with a distance-dependent Chinese restaurant process (ddCRP) to accommodate an unknown number of speakers. Our system is fully supervised and is able to learn from examples where time-stamped speaker labels are annotated. We achieved a 7.6% diarization error rate on NIST SRE 2000 CALLHOME, which is better than the state-of-the-art method using spectral clustering. Moreover, our method decodes in an online fashion while most state-of-the-art systems rely on offline clustering.

Landau quantization of nearly degenerate bands, and full symmetry classification of avoided Landau-level crossings

Semiclassical quantization rules compactly describe the energy dispersion of Landau levels, and are predictive of quantum oscillations in transport and thermodynamic quantities. Such rules -- as formulated by Onsager, Lifshitz and Roth -- apply when the spin-orbit interaction dominates over the Zeeman interaction (or vice versa), but does not generally apply when the two interactions are comparable in strength. In this work, we present a generalized quantization rule which treats the spin-orbit and Zeeman interactions on equal footing, and therefore has wider applicability to spin-orbit-coupled materials lacking a spatial inversion center, or having magnetic order. More generally, our rule describes the Landau quantization of any number of nearly degenerate energy bands -- in any symmetry class. The resultant Landau-level spectrum is generically non-equidistant but may contain spin (or pseudospin) degeneracies. To tune to such degeneracies in the absence of crystalline point-group symmetries, three real parameters are needed. We have exhaustively identified all symmetry classes of cyclotron orbits for which this number is reduced from three, thus establishing symmetry-enforced 'non-crossing rules' for Landau levels. In particular, only one parameter is needed in the presence of spatial rotation or inversion; this single parameter may be the magnitude or orientation of the field. Signatures of single-parameter tunability include (i) a smooth crossover between period-doubled and -undoubled quantum oscillations in the low-temperature Shubnikov-de Haas effect, as well as (ii) 'magic-angle' magnetoresistance oscillations. We demonstrate the utility of our quantization rule, as well as the tunability of Landau-level degeneracies, for the Rashba-Dresselhaus two-dimensional electron gas -- subject to an arbitrarily oriented magnetic field.

Rate Distortion For Model Compression: From Theory To Practice

The enormous size of modern deep neural networks makes it challenging to deploy those models in memory and communication limited scenarios. Thus, compressing a trained model without a significant loss in performance has become an increasingly important task. Tremendous advances has been made recently, where the main technical building blocks are parameter pruning, parameter sharing (quantization), and low-rank factorization. In this paper, we propose principled approaches to improve upon the common heuristics used in those building blocks, namely pruning and quantization. We first study the fundamental limit for model compression via the rate distortion theory. We bring the rate distortion function from data compression to model compression to quantify this fundamental limit. We prove a lower bound for the rate distortion function and prove its achievability for linear models. Although this achievable compression scheme is intractable in practice, this analysis motivates a novel model compression framework. This framework provides a new objective function in model compression, which can be applied together with other classes of model compressor such as pruning or quantization. Theoretically, we prove that the proposed scheme is optimal for compressing one-hidden-layer ReLU neural networks. Empirically, we show that the proposed scheme improves upon the baseline in the compression-accuracy tradeoff.

Neural Phrase-to-Phrase Machine Translation

In this paper, we propose Neural Phrase-to-Phrase Machine Translation (NP$^2$MT). Our model uses a phrase attention mechanism to discover relevant input (source) segments that are used by a decoder to generate output (target) phrases. We also design an efficient dynamic programming algorithm to decode segments that allows the model to be trained faster than the existing neural phrase-based machine translation method by Huang et al. (2018). Furthermore, our method can naturally integrate with external phrase dictionaries during decoding. Empirical experiments show that our method achieves comparable performance with the state-of-the art methods on benchmark datasets. However, when the training and testing data are from different distributions or domains, our method performs better.

Superconductivity from the Condensation of Topological Defects in a Quantum Spin-Hall Insulator

The discovery that spin-orbit coupling can generate a new state of matter in the form of quantum spin-Hall (QSH) insulators has brought topology to the forefront of condensed matter physics. While QSH states from spin-orbit coupling can be fully understood in terms of band theory, fascinating many-body effects are expected if the state instead results from interaction-generated symmetry breaking. In particular, topological defects of the corresponding order parameter provide a route to exotic quantum phase transitions. Here, we introduce a model in which the condensation of skyrmion defects in an interaction-generated QSH insulator produces a superconducting (SC) phase. Because vortex excitations of the latter carry a spin-$1/2$ degree of freedom numbers, the SC order may be understood as emerging from a gapless spin liquid normal state. The QSH-SC transition is an example of a deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP), for which we provide an improved model with only a single length scale that is accessible to large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations.

Duality between $(2+1)d$ Quantum Critical Points

Duality refers to two equivalent descriptions of the same theory from different points of view. Recently there has been tremendous progress in formulating and understanding possible dualities of quantum many body theories in $2+1$-spacetime dimensions. Of particular interest are dualities that describe conformally invariant quantum field theories in $(2+1)d$. These arise as descriptions of quantum critical points in condensed matter physics. The appreciation of the possible dual descriptions of such theories has greatly enhanced our understanding of some challenging questions about such quantum critical points. Perhaps surprisingly the same dualities also underlie recent progress in our understanding of other problems such as the half-filled Landau level and correlated surface states of topological insulators. Here we provide a pedagogical review of these recent developments from a point of view geared toward condensed matter physics.

Towards Neural Phrase-based Machine Translation

In this paper, we present Neural Phrase-based Machine Translation (NPMT). Our method explicitly models the phrase structures in output sequences using Sleep-WAke Networks (SWAN), a recently proposed segmentation-based sequence modeling method. To mitigate the monotonic alignment requirement of SWAN, we introduce a new layer to perform (soft) local reordering of input sequences. Different from existing neural machine translation (NMT) approaches, NPMT does not use attention-based decoding mechanisms. Instead, it directly outputs phrases in a sequential order and can decode in linear time. Our experiments show that NPMT achieves superior performances on IWSLT 2014 German-English/English-German and IWSLT 2015 English-Vietnamese machine translation tasks compared with strong NMT baselines. We also observe that our method produces meaningful phrases in output languages.

Subgoal Discovery for Hierarchical Dialogue Policy Learning

Developing agents to engage in complex goal-oriented dialogues is challenging partly because the main learning signals are very sparse in long conversations. In this paper, we propose a divide-and-conquer approach that discovers and exploits the hidden structure of the task to enable efficient policy learning. First, given successful example dialogues, we propose the Subgoal Discovery Network (SDN) to divide a complex goal-oriented task into a set of simpler subgoals in an unsupervised fashion. We then use these subgoals to learn a multi-level policy by hierarchical reinforcement learning. We demonstrate our method by building a dialogue agent for the composite task of travel planning. Experiments with simulated and real users show that our approach performs competitively against a state-of-the-art method that requires human-defined subgoals. Moreover, we show that the learned subgoals are often human comprehensible.

Sequence Modeling via Segmentations

Segmental structure is a common pattern in many types of sequences such as phrases in human languages. In this paper, we present a probabilistic model for sequences via their segmentations. The probability of a segmented sequence is calculated as the product of the probabilities of all its segments, where each segment is modeled using existing tools such as recurrent neural networks. Since the segmentation of a sequence is usually unknown in advance, we sum over all valid segmentations to obtain the final probability for the sequence. An efficient dynamic programming algorithm is developed for forward and backward computations without resorting to any approximation. We demonstrate our approach on text segmentation and speech recognition tasks. In addition to quantitative results, we also show that our approach can discover meaningful segments in their respective application contexts.

Thoracic Disease Identification and Localization with Limited Supervision

Accurate identification and localization of abnormalities from radiology images play an integral part in clinical diagnosis and treatment planning. Building a highly accurate prediction model for these tasks usually requires a large number of images manually annotated with labels and finding sites of abnormalities. In reality, however, such annotated data are expensive to acquire, especially the ones with location annotations. We need methods that can work well with only a small amount of location annotations. To address this challenge, we present a unified approach that simultaneously performs disease identification and localization through the same underlying model for all images. We demonstrate that our approach can effectively leverage both class information as well as limited location annotation, and significantly outperforms the comparative reference baseline in both classification and localization tasks.

Confinement transition of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theories coupled to massless fermions: emergent QCD$_3$ and $SO(5)$ symmetry

We study a model of fermions on the square lattice at half-filling coupled to an Ising gauge theory, that was recently shown in Monte Carlo simulations to exhibit $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order and massless Dirac fermion excitations. On tuning parameters, a confining phase with broken symmetry (an antiferromagnet in one choice of Hamiltonian) was also established, and the transition between these phases was found to be continuous, with co-incident onset of symmetry breaking and confinement. While the confinement transition in pure gauge theories is well understood in terms of condensing magnetic flux excitations, the same transition in the presence of gapless fermions is a challenging problem owing to the statistical interactions between fermions and the condensing flux excitations. The conventional scenario then proceeds via a two step transition, involving a symmetry breaking transition leading to gapped fermions followed by confinement. In contrast, here, using large scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we provide further evidence for a direct, continuous transition and also find numerical evidence for an enlarged $SO(5)$ symmetry rotating between antiferromagnetism and valence bond solid orders proximate to criticality. Guided by our numerical finding, we develop a field theory description of the direct transition involving an emergent non-abelian ($SU(2)$) gauge theory and a matrix Higgs field. We contrast our results with the conventional Gross--Neveu--Yukawa transition.

Symmetry enriched U(1) quantum spin liquids

We classify and characterize three dimensional $U(1)$ quantum spin liquids (deconfined $U(1)$ gauge theories) with global symmetries. These spin liquids have an emergent gapless photon and emergent electric/magnetic excitations (which we assume are gapped). We first discuss in great detail the case with time reversal and $SO(3)$ spin rotational symmetries. We find there are 15 distinct such quantum spin liquids based on the properties of bulk excitations. We show how to interpret them as gauged symmetry-protected topological states (SPTs). Some of these states possess fractional response to an external $SO(3)$ gauge field, due to which we dub them "fractional topological paramagnets". We identify 11 other anomalous states that can be grouped into 3 anomaly classes. The classification is further refined by weakly coupling these quantum spin liquids to bosonic Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) phases with the same symmetry. This refinement does not modify the bulk excitation structure but modifies universal surface properties. Taking this refinement into account, we find there are 168 distinct such $U(1)$ quantum spin liquids. After this warm-up we provide a general framework to classify symmetry enriched $U(1)$ quantum spin liquids for a large class of symmetries. As a more complex example, we discuss $U(1)$ quantum spin liquids with time reversal and $Z_2$ symmetries in detail. Based on the properties of the bulk excitations, we find there are 38 distinct such spin liquids that are anomaly-free. There are also 37 anomalous $U(1)$ quantum spin liquids with this symmetry. Finally, we briefly discuss the classification of $U(1)$ quantum spin liquids enriched by some other symmetries.
