Chiral current induced by torsional Weyl anomaly

Torsion can be realized as dislocation in the crystal lattice of material. It is particularly interesting if the material has fermions in the spectrum, such as graphene, topological insulators, Dirac and Weyl semimetals, as it's transport properties can be affected by the torsion. In this paper, we find that, due to Weyl anomaly, torsion in Dirac and Weyl semimetals can induce novel chiral currents, either near a boundary or in a ``conformally flat space''. We briefly discuss how to measure this interesting effect in experiment. It is remarkable that these experiments can help to clarify the theoretical controversy of whether an imaginary Pontryagin density could appear in the Weyl anomaly.

Gravitational Waves in Metastable Supersymmetry Breaking

If supersymmetry is broken in metastable vacua, it is not clear why we are now in there rather than supersymmetric vacua. Moreover, it is natural to expect that we were in supersymmetric vacua, which have higher symmetry than metastable vacua, in the early universe. In this paper, we reexamine and improve the previous analysis on the cosmological evolution of the vacuum structure in the ISS model of metastable supersymmetry breaking by taking into account constraints on the reheating temperature, which is needed to avoid the overproduction of gravitinos. It turns out that the desired phase transition from a supersymmetric vacuum to a metastable vacuum is allowed only in the light gravitino mass region $m_{3/2} < 4.7$ eV. This is achieved by either rolling down potential or tunneling processes depending on the reheating temperature. We show that when the tunneling processes are realized, abundant gravitational waves could be produced from collisions of runaway bubbles. The resulting gravitational waves are detectable with the future gravitational wave interferometers like LISA and DECIGO.

Conformal Boundary Condition and Massive Gravitons in AdS/BCFT

According to Witten [1], the conformal boundary condition of gravity, which specifies the conformal geometry of the boundary and the trace of the extrinsic curvature, is elliptic and leads to well-defined perturbation theory of gravity about any classical solution. The conformal boundary condition was previously considered in [2, 3] in the context of AdS/BCFT, wherein the equation of motion of the end-of-the-world was derived and emphasized. In this paper, we investigate further other consequences of the conformal boundary condition in AdS/BCFT. We derive the boundary central charges of the holographic Weyl anomaly and show that they are exactly the same for conformal boundary condition and Dirichlet boundary condition. We analysis the metric perturbation with conformal boundary condition (CBC), Dirichlet boundary condition (DBC) and Neumann boundary condition (NBC) imposed on the end-of-the-world brane and show that they admit an interpretation as the fluctuation of the extrinsic curvature (case of CBC and DBC) and the induced metric (case of NBC) of Q respectively. In all cases, the fluctuation modes are massive, which are closely relevant to the massive island formation in the literature. Our results reveal that there are non-trivial gravitational dynamics from extrinsic curvatures on the conformal and Dirichlet branes, which may have interesting applications to the island. We also discuss, in passing, the localization of gravitons in brane world theory. We find that, contrary to NBC, the graviton for CBC/DBC is located on the brane with non-positive tension instead of non-negative tension.

Induced Quantized Spin Current in Vacuum

We uncover a fundamental effect of the QED vacuum in an external electromagnetic (EM) field. We show that the quantized vacuum of electrons is spin polarized by the EM field and manifests as a vacuum spin current. An experiment is proposed to measure the spin torque exerted by the spin current by measuring the twisted angle of the director axis of a nematic liquid crystal.

Generalized Darmois-Israel junction conditions

We present a general method to derive the appropriate Darmois-Israel junction conditions for gravitational theories with higher-order derivative terms by integrating the bulk equations of motion across the singular hypersurface. In higher derivative theories, the field equations can contain terms which are more singular than the Dirac delta distribution. To handle them appropriately, we formulate a regularization procedure based on representing the delta function as the limit of a sequence of classical functions. This procedure involves imposing suitable constraints on the extrinsic curvature such that the field equations are compatible with the singular source being a delta distribution. As explicit examples of our approach, we demonstrate in detail how to obtain the generalized junction conditions for quadratic gravity, $\mathcal{F}(R)$ theories, a 4D low-energy effective action in string theory and action terms that are Euler densities. Our results are novel, and refine the accuracy of previously claimed results in $\mathcal{F} (R)$ theories and quadratic gravity. In particular, when the coupling constants of quadratic gravity are those for the Gauss-Bonnet case, our junction conditions reduce to the known ones for the latter obtained independently by boundary variation of a surface term in the action. Finally, we briefly discuss a couple of applications to thin-shell wormholes and stellar models.

Weyl Anomaly induced Fermi Condensation and Holography

Recently it is found that, due to Weyl anomaly, a background scalar field induces a non-trivial Fermi condensation for theories with Yukawa couplings. For simplicity, the paper consider only scalar type Yukawa coupling and, in the BCFT case, only for a specific boundary condition. In these cases, the Weyl anomaly takes on a simple special form. In this paper, we generalize the results to more general situations. First, we obtain general expressions of Weyl anomaly due to a background scalar and pseudo scalar field in general 4d BCFTs. Then, we derive the general form of Fermi condensation from the Weyl anomaly. It is remarkable that, in general, Fermi condensation is non-zero even if there was not a non-vanishing scalar field background. Finally, we verify our results with free BCFT with Yukawa coupling to scalar and pseudo-scalar background potential with general chiral bag boundary condition and with holographic BCFT. In particular, we obtain the shape and curvature dependence of the Fermi condensate from the holographic one point function.

Fermi Condensation induced by Weyl Anomaly

Fermi condensation is usually a phenomena of strongly correlated system. In this letter, we point out a novel mechanism for condensation of Dirac fermions due to Weyl anomaly. The condensation has its physical origin in the nontrivial response of the fermion vacuum to changes in the background spacetime (either boundary location or the background metric), and can be felt when a background scalar field is turned on. The scalar field can be, for example, the Higgs field in a fundamental theory or the phonon in condensed matter system. For a spacetime with boundaries, the induced Fermi condensate is inversely proportional to the proper distance from the boundary. For a conformally flat spacetime without boundaries, Fermi condensation depends on the conformal factor and its derivatives. We also generalize the Banks-Casher relation which relates the Fermi condensate to the zero mode density of the Dirac operator to a local form. Due to its universal nature, this anomaly induced Fermi condensate can be expected to have a wide range of applications in physics.

Gravitational Waves in Axion Dark Matter

Axion dark matter is interesting as it allows a natural coupling to the gravitational Chern-Simons term. In the presence of an axion background, the gravitational Chern-Simons term produces parity violating effects in the gravitational sector, in particular on the propagation of gravitational waves. Previously, it has been shown that the coherent oscillation of the axion field leads to a parametric amplification of gravitational waves with a specific frequency. In this paper we focus on the parity violating effects of the Chern-Simon coupling and show the occurrence of gravitational birefringence. We also find deviation from the speed of light of the velocity of the gravitational waves. We give constraints on the axion-Chern-Simons coupling constant and the abundance of the axion dark matter from the observation of GW170817 and GRB170817A.

Memory Effect in Anti-de Sitter Spacetime

The geodesic deviation of a pair of test particles is an natural observable for the gravitational memory effect. Nevertheless in curved spacetime, this observable is plagued with various issues that need to be clarified before one can extract the essential part that is related to the gravitational radiation. In this paper we consider the Anti deSitter space as an example and analyze this observable carefully. We show that by employing the Fermi Normal Coordinates around the geodesic of one of the particles, one can elegantly separate out the curvature contribution of the background spacetime to the geodesic deviation from the contribution of the gravitational wave. The gravitational wave memory obtained this way depends linearly and locally on the retarded metric perturbation caused by the gravitational wave, and, remarkably, it takes on exactly the same formula (1) as in the flat case. To determine the memory, in addition to the standard tail contribution to the gravitational radiation, one need to take into account of the contribution from the reflected gravitational wave off the AdS boundary. For general curved spacetime, our analysis suggests that the use of a certain coordinate system adapted to the local geodesic (e.g. the Fermi normal coordinates system in the AdS case) would allow one to dissect the geodesic deviation of test particles and extract the relevant contribution to define the memory due to gravitational radiation.

Boundary String Current & Weyl Anomaly in Six-dimensional Conformal Field Theory

It was recently discovered that for a boundary system in the presence of a background magnetic field, the quantum fluctuation of the vacuum would create a non-uniform magnetization density for the vacuum and a magnetization current is induced in the vacuum. It was also shown that this "magnetic Casimir effect" of the vacuum is closely related to another quantum effect of the vacuum, the Weyl anomaly. Furthermore, the phenomena can be understood in terms of the holography of the boundary system. In this paper, we generalize this four dimensional effect to six dimensions. We use the AdS/BCFT holography to show that in the presence of a 3-form magnetic field strength $H$,a string current is induced in a six dimensional boundary conformal field theory. This allows us to determine the gauge field contribution to the Weyl anomaly in six dimensional conformal field theory in a $H$-flux background. For the (2,0) superconformal field theory of $N$ M5-branes, the current has a magnitude proportional to $N^3$ for large $N$. This suggests that the degree of freedoms scales as $N^3$ in the (2,0) superconformal theory of $N$ multiple M5-branes. The prediction we have for the Weyl anomaly is a new criteria that the (2,0) theory should satisfy.

$c$-Theorem for Anisotropic RG Flows from Holographic Entanglement Entropy

We propose a candidate $c$-function in arbitrary dimensional quantum field theories with broken Lorentz and rotational symmetry. For holographic theories we derive the necessary and sufficient conditions on the geometric background for these $c$-functions to satisfy the $c$-theorem. We obtain the null energy conditions for anisotropic background to show that do not themselves assure the $c$-theorem. By employing them, we find that is possible to impose conditions on the UV data that are enough to guarantee at least one monotonic $c$-function along the RG flow. These UV conditions can be used as building blocks for the construction of anisotropic monotonic RG flows. Finally, we apply our results to several known anisotropic theories and identify the region in the parameters space of the metric where the $c$-theorem holds for our proposed $c$-function.

Weyl Anomaly and Vacuum Magnetization Current of M5-brane in Background Flux

It was recently discovered that for a boundary system in the presence of a background magnetic field, the quantum fluctuation of the vacuum would create a non-uniform magnetization density for the vacuum and a magnetization current is induced in the vacuum. It was also shown that this magnetic Casimir effect of the vacuum is closely related to another quantum effect of the vacuum, the Weyl anomaly. Furthermore, the phenomena can be understood in terms of the holography of the boundary system. In this article, we review the derivation of this phenomena from QFT as well as the derivation of it using AdS/BCFT. We then generalize this four dimensional effect to six-dimensions. We use the AdS/BCFT holography to show that in the presence of a 3-form magnetic field strength $H$, a string current is induced in a six-dimensional boundary conformal field theory. This allows us to determine the gauge field contribution to the Weyl anomaly in six-dimensional conformal field theory in a $H$-flux background. For the (2,0) superconformal field theory of $N$ M5-branes, the current has a magnitude proportional to $N^3$ for large $N$. This suggests that the degree of freedoms scales as $N^3$ in the (2,0) superconformal theory of $N$ multiple M5-branes. Our result for the Weyl anomaly is a new prediction for the (2,0) theory.

Weyl Anomaly Induced Current in Boundary Quantum Field Theories

We show that when an external magnetic field parallel to the boundary is applied, the Weyl anomaly gives rises to a new anomalous current in the vicinity of the boundary. The induced current is a magnetization current in origin: the movement of the virtual charges near the boundary give rise to a nonuniform magnetization of the vacuum and hence a magnetization current. Unlike other previously studied anomalous current phenomena such as the chiral magnetic effect or the chiral vortical effect, this induced current does not rely on the presence of a material system and can occur in vacuum. Similar to the Casimir effect, our discovered phenomenon arises from the effect of the boundary on the quantum fluctuations of the vacuum. However this induced current is purely quantum mechanical and has no classical limit. We briefly comment on how this induced current may be observed experimentally.

Anomalous Transport in Holographic Boundary Conformal Field Theories

Recently, it is found that when an external magnetic field parallel to the boundary is applied, Weyl anomaly gives rises to a new anomalous current transport in the vicinity of the boundary. At the leading order of closeness from the boundary, the current is determined universally by the central charge of the theory. In this paper, we give a holographic proof for the existence and universality for this transport phenomena. We show that the current is independent of boundary conditions in four dimensions while it depends on boundary conditions in other dimensions. We also study the backreaction of the bulk Maxwell fields on the AdS spacetime and obtain the holographic Weyl anomaly for 5d BCFTs in presence of the background field strength.

Universality for Shape Dependence of Casimir Effects from Weyl Anomaly

We reveal elegant relations between the shape dependence of the Casimir effects and Weyl anomaly in boundary conformal field theories (BCFT). We show that for any BCFT which has a description in terms of an effective action, the near boundary divergent behavior of the renormalized stress tensor is completely determined by the central charges of the theory. These relations are verified by free BCFTs. We test them with holographic models of BCFT and find exact agreement. We propose that these relations between Casimir coefficients and central charges hold for any BCFT. With the holographic models, we reproduce not only the precise form of the near boundary divergent behavior of the stress tensor, but also the surface counter term that is needed to make the total energy finite. As they are proportional to the central charges, the near boundary divergence of the stress tensor must be physical and cannot be dropped by further artificial renormalization. Our results thus provide affirmative support on the physical nature of the divergent energy density near the boundary, whose reality has been a long-standing controversy in the literature.

On New Proposal for Holographic BCFT

This paper is an extended version of our short letter on a new proposal for holographic boundary conformal field, i.e., BCFT. By using the Penrose-Brown-Henneaux (PBH) transformation, we successfully obtain the expected boundary Weyl anomaly. The obtained boundary central charges satisfy naturally a c-like theorem holographically. We then develop an approach of holographic renormalization for BCFT, and reproduce the correct boundary Weyl anomaly. This provides a non-trivial check of our proposal. We also investigate the holographic entanglement entropy of BCFT and find that our proposal gives the expected orthogonal condition that the minimal surface must be normal to the spacetime boundaries if they intersect. This is another support for our proposal. We also find that the entanglement entropy depends on the boundary conditions of BCFT and the distance to the boundary; and that the entanglement wedge behaves a phase transition, which is important for the self-consistency of AdS/BCFT. Finally, we show that the proposal of arXiv:1105.5165 is too restrictive that it always make vanishing some of the boundary central charges.

A New Proposal for Holographic BCFT

We propose a new holographic dual of conformal field theory defined on a manifold with boundaries, i.e. BCFT. Our proposal can apply to general boundaries and agrees with arXiv:1105.5165 for the special case of a disk and half plane. Using the new proposal of AdS/BCFT, we successfully obtain the expected boundary Weyl anomaly and the obtained boundary central charges satisfy naturally a c-like theorem holographically. We also investigate the holographic entanglement entropy of BCFT and find that the minimal surface must be normal to the bulk spacetime boundaries when they intersect. Interestingly, the entanglement entropy depends on the boundary conditions of BCFT and the distance to the boundary. The entanglement wedge has an interesting phase transition which is important for the self-consistency of AdS/BCFT.

Universality in the Shape Dependence of Holographic Rényi Entropy for General Higher Derivative Gravity

We consider higher derivative gravity and obtain universal relations for the shape coefficients $(f_a, f_b, f_c)$ of the shape dependent universal part of the Rényi entropy for four dimensional CFTs in terms of the parameters $(c, t_2, t_4)$ of two-point and three-point functions of stress tensors. As a consistency check, these shape coefficients $f_a$ and $f_c$ satisfy the differential relation as derived previously for the Rényi entropy. Interestingly, these holographic relations also apply to weakly coupled conformal field theories such as theories of free fermions and vectors but are violated by theories of free scalars. The mismatch of $f_a$ for scalars has been observed in the literature and is due to certain delicate boundary contributions to the modular Hamiltonian. Interestingly, we find a combination of our holographic relations which are satisfied by all free CFTs including scalars. We conjecture that this combined relation is universal for general CFTs in four dimensional spacetime. Finally, we find there are similar universal laws for holographic Rényi entropy in general dimensions.
