The degenerate Fermi gas with renormalized density-dependent interactions in the K harmonic approximation

We present a simple implementation of a density-dependent, zero-range interactions in a degenerate Fermi gas described in hyperspherical coordinates. The method produces a 1D effective potential which accurately describes the ground state energy as a function of the hyperradius, the rms radius of the two spin component gas throughout the unitarity regime. In the unitarity regime the breathing mode frequency is found to limit to the non-interacting value. A dynamical instability, similar to the Bosenova, is predicted to be possible in gases containing more than three spin components, for large, negative, two-body scattering lengths.

Indirect Dissociative Recombination of LiH$^+$ Molecules Fueled by Complex Resonance Manifolds

The LiH$^{+}$ molecule is prototypical of the indirect dissociative recombination (DR) process, in which a colliding electron destroys the molecule through Rydberg capture pathways. This Letter develops the first quantitative test of the Siegert state multichannel quantum defect theory description of indirect DR for a diatomic molecular ion. The R-matrix approach is adopted to calculate ab-initio quantum defects, functions of the internuclear distance that characterize both Rydberg states and the zero-energy collisions of electrons with LiH$^{+}$ ions. The calculated DR rate coefficient agrees accurately with recent experimental data (S. Krohn et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 4005). We identify the doorways to fast indirect DR as complex resonance manifolds, which couple closed channels having both high and low principal quantum numbers. This sheds new light on the competition between direct and indirect DR pathways, and suggests the reason why previous theory underestimated the DR rate by an order of magnitude.

High Harmonic Generation in SF$_{6}$: Raman-excited Vibrational Quantum Beats

In a recent experiment (N. Wagner et al., PNAS v103, p13279) on SF$_{6}$, a high-harmonic generating laser pulse is preceded by a pump pulse which stimulates Raman-active modes in the molecule. Varying the time delay between the two pulses modulates high harmonic intensity, with frequencies equal to the vibration frequencies of the Raman-active modes. We propose an explanation of this modulation as a quantum interference between competing pathways that occur via adjacent vibrational states of the molecule. The Raman and high harmonic processes act as beamsplitters, producing vibrational quantum beats among the Raman-active vibrational modes that are excited by the first pulse. We introduce a rigorous treatment of the electron-ion recombination process and the effect of the ionic Coulomb field in the electron propagation outside the molecule, improving over the widely-used three-step model.

Renormalized mean-field theory for a two-component Fermi gas with s-wave interactions

A method is introduced to renormalize the zero-range interaction for use in mean-field and many-body theory, starting from two-body calculations. The density-renormalized delta-function interaction is then applied using mean-field theory to a two-component fermion gas, and compared with diffusion Monte Carlo simulations and conventional mean-field calculations. In the unitarity limit, the equation of state exhibits the expected behavior $μ\proptoρ^{2/3}$, with a parameter $β= -0.492$, which is consistent with recent experiments \cite{partridge2006pap, bourdel2004esb, kinast2005hcs, Stewart06}.

Coherent Quantum Engineering of Free-Space Laser Cooling

We perform a quantitative analysis of the cooling dynamics of three-level atomic systems interacting with two distinct lasers. Employing sparse-matrix techniques, we find numerical solutions to the fully quantized master equation in steady state. Our method allows straightforward determination of laser-cooling temperatures without the ambiguity often accompanied by semiclassical calculations, and more quickly than non-sparse techniques. Our calculations allow us to develop an understanding of the regimes of cooling, as well as a qualitative picture of the mechanism, related to the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency. Effects of the induced asymmetric Fano-type lineshapes affect the detunings required for optimum cooling, as well as the predicted minimum temperatures which can be lower than the Doppler limit for either transition.

Experimental verification of minima in excited long-range Rydberg states of Rb_2

Recent theoretical studies with alkali atoms A$^{\ast}$ excited to high Rydberg states predicted the existence of ultra long-range molecular bound states. Such excited dimers have large electric dipole moments which, in combination with their long radiative lifetimes, make them excellent candidates for manipulation in applications. This letter reports on experimental investigations of the self-broadening of Rb principal series lines, which revealed multiple satellites in the line wings. The positions of the satellites agree quantitatively with theoretically-predicted minima in the excited long-range Rydberg states of Rb$_2$.

Near threshold rotational excitation of molecular ions by electron-impact

New cross sections for the rotational excitation of H$_3^+$ by electrons are calculated {\it ab initio} at low impact energies. The validity of the adiabatic-nuclei-rotation (ANR) approximation, combined with $R$-matrix wavefunctions, is assessed by comparison with rovibrational quantum defect theory calculations based on the treatment of Kokoouline and Greene ({\it Phys. Rev. A} {\bf 68} 012703 2003). Pure ANR excitation cross sections are shown to be accurate down to threshold, except in the presence of large oscillating Rydberg resonances. These resonances occur for transitions with $ΔJ=1$ and are caused by closed channel effects. A simple analytic formula is derived for averaging the rotational probabilities over such resonances in a 3-channel problem. In accord with the Wigner law for an attractive Coulomb field, rotational excitation cross sections are shown to be large and finite at threshold, with a significant but moderate contribution from closed channels.

Hyperspherical Description of the Degenerate Fermi Gas: S-wave Interactions

We present a unique theoretical description of the physics of the spherically trapped $N$-atom degenerate Fermi gas (DFG) at zero temperature based on an ordinary Schrödinger equation with a microscopic, two body interaction potential. With a careful choice of coordinates and a variational wavefunction, the many body Schrödinger equation can be accurately described by a \emph{linear}, one dimensional effective Schrödinger equation in a single collective coordinate, the rms radius of the gas. Comparisons of the energy, rms radius and peak density of ground state energy are made to those predicted by Hartree-Fock (HF). Also the lowest radial excitation frequency (the breathing mode frequency) agrees with a sum rule calculation, but deviates from a HF prediction.

Radiation damage to DNA: electron scattering from the backbone subunits

In the context of damage to DNA by low-energy electrons, we carry out calculations of electron scattering from tetrahydrofuran and phosphoric acid, models of the subunits in the DNA backbone, as a first step in simulating the electron capture process that occurs in the cell. In the case of tetrahydrofuran, we also compare with previous theoretical and experimental data. A comparison of the shape of the resonant structures to virtual orbitals is also performed to gain insight into the systematic connections with electron scattering from similar molecules and dissociative electron attachment experiments.

Renner-Teller effects in HCO+ dissociative recombination

A theoretical description of the dissociative recombination process for the HCO+ ion suggests that the nonadiabatic Renner-Teller coupling between electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom plays an important role. This finding is consistent with a recent study of this process for another closed-shell molecule, the H3+ ion, where Jahn-Teller coupling was shown to generate a relatively high rate. The cross section obtained here for the dissociative recombination of HCO+exhibits encouraging agreement with a merged-beam experiment.

Interaction of intense vuv radiation with large xenon clusters

The interaction of atomic clusters with short, intense pulses of laser light to form extremely hot, dense plasmas has attracted extensive experimental and theoretical interest. The high density of atoms within the cluster greatly enhances the atom--laser interaction, while the finite size of the cluster prevents energy from escaping the interaction region. Recent technological advances have allowed experiments to probe the laser--cluster interaction at very high photon energies, with interactions much stronger than suggested by theories for lower photon energies. We present a model of the laser--cluster interaction which uses non-perturbative R-matrix techniques to calculate inverse bremsstrahlung and photoionization cross sections for Herman-Skillman atomic potentials. We describe the evolution of the cluster under the influence of the processes of inverse bremsstrahlung heating, photoionization, collisional ionization and recombination, and expansion of the cluster. We compare charge state distribution, charge state ejection energies, and total energy absorbed with the Hamburg experiment of Wabnitz {\em et al.} [Nature {\bf 420}, 482 (2002)] and ejected electron spectra with Laarmann {\em et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 95}, 063402 (2005)].

Predictions of laser-cooling temperatures for multilevel atoms in three-dimensional polarization-gradient fields

We analyze the dynamics of atom-laser interactions for atoms having multiple, closely spaced, excited-state hyperfine manifolds. The system is treated fully quantum mechanically, including the atom's center-of-mass degree of freedom, and motion is described in a polarization gradient field created by a three-dimensional laser configuration. We develop the master equation describing this system, and then specialize it to the low-intensity limit by adiabatically eliminating the excited states. We show how this master equation can be simulated using the Monte Carlo wave function technique, and we provide details on implementation of this procedure. Monte Carlo calculations of steady state atomic momentum distributions for two fermionic alkaline earth isotopes, $^{25}$Mg and $^{87}$Sr, interacting with a three-dimensional lin-$\perp$-lin laser configuration are presented, providing estimates of experimentally achievable laser-cooling temperatures.

Collective Behavior of the Closed-Shell Fermi Gas

We propose an unconventional description for the ground state and collective oscillations of the two-component normal Fermi gas with two-body zero-range interactions. The many-body problem can be accurately reduced to a linear, one-dimensional Schroedinger equation in a single collective coordinate, the hyperradius R of the N-atom system which is the root mean square radius. The calculated properties of the Fermi gas ground state are shown to agree accurately with results from the Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation over a wide range of interspecies scattering lengths. The breathing mode excitation frequency deviates qualitatively from HF predictions, but we show that this reflects a failure of the HF approach for this observable.

Low energy electron scattering from DNA and RNA bases: shape resonances and radiation damage

Calculations are carried out to determine elastic scattering cross sections and resonance energies for low energy electron impact on uracil and on each of the DNA bases (thymine, cytosine, adenine, guanine), for isolated molecules in their equilibrium geometry. Our calculations are compared with available theory and experiment. We also attempt to correlate this information with experimental dissociation patterns through an analysis of the temporary anion structures that are formed by electron capture in shape resonances.

A high-accuracy optical clock via three-level coherence in neutral bosonic $^{88}$Sr

An optical atomic clock scheme is developed that utilizes two lasers to establish coherent coupling between the $5s^2 \phantom{}^1S_0$ ground state of $^{88}$Sr and the first excited state, $5s5p \phantom{}^3P_0$. The coupling is mediated by the broad $5s5p \phantom{}^1P_1$ state, exploiting the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency. The effective linewidth of the clock transition can be chosen at will by adjusting the laser intensity. By trapping the $^{88}$Sr atoms in an optical lattice, long interaction times with the two lasers are ensured; Doppler and recoil effects are eliminated. Based on a careful analysis of systematic errors, a clock accuracy of better than $2\times 10^{-17}$ is expected.

Multiphoton ionization of xenon in the VUV regime

In a recent experiment at the VUV free-electron laser facility at DESY in Hamburg, the generation of multiply charged ions in a gas of atomic xenon was observed. This paper develops a theoretical description of multiphoton ionization of xenon and its ions. The numerical results lend support to the view that the experimental observation may be interpreted in terms of the nonlinear absorption of several VUV photons. The method rests on the Hartree-Fock-Slater independent-particle model. The multiphoton physics is treated within a Floquet scheme. The continuum problem of the photoelectron is solved using a complex absorbing potential. Rate equations for the ionic populations are integrated to take into account the temporal structure of the individual VUV laser pulses. The effect of the spatial profile of the free-electron laser beam on the distribution of xenon charge states is included. An Auger-type many-electron mechanism may play a role in the VUV multiphoton ionization of xenon ions.

Siegert pseudostates: completeness and time evolution

Within the theory of Siegert pseudostates, it is possible to accurately calculate bound states and resonances. The energy continuum is replaced by a discrete set of states. Many questions of interest in scattering theory can be addressed within the framework of this formalism, thereby avoiding the need to treat the energy continuum. For practical calculations it is important to know whether a certain subset of Siegert pseudostates comprises a basis. This is a nontrivial issue, because of the unusual orthogonality and overcompleteness properties of Siegert pseudostates. Using analytical and numerical arguments, it is shown that the subset of bound states and outgoing Siegert pseudostates forms a basis. Time evolution in the context of Siegert pseudostates is also investigated. From the Mittag-Leffler expansion of the outgoing-wave Green's function, the time-dependent expansion of a wave packet in terms of Siegert pseudostates is derived. In this expression, all Siegert pseudostates--bound, antibound, outgoing, and incoming--are employed. Each of these evolves in time in a nonexponential fashion. Numerical tests underline the accuracy of the method.

Electron-molecule scattering calculations in a 3D finite element R-matrix approach

We have implemented a three-dimensional finite element approach, based on tricubic polynomials in spherical coordinates, which solves the Schrodinger equation for scattering of a low energy electron from a molecule, approximating the electron exchange as a local potential. The potential is treated as a sum of three terms: electrostatic, exchange and polarization. The electrostatic term can be extracted directly from ab initio codes (GAUSSIAN 98 in the work described here), while the exchange term is approximated using different local density functionals. A local polarization potential approximately describes the long range attraction to the molecular target induced by the scattering electron.
