Ultrahigh-Energy Neutrino Interactions and Neutrino Telescope Event Rates

We present results for neutrino-nucleon cross sections for energies up to 10$^21$eV, of relevance to the detection of ultrahigh energy galactic and extragalactic neutrinos. At the highest energies, our results are about 2.4 times larger than previous estimates. Using these new cross sections, we predict neutrino telescope event rates for the upward moving muons initiated by the neutrino interactions in the Earth and for contained-vertex events in the PeV range due to neutrino-electron interactions. We show that future neutrino detectors, such as AMANDA, BAIKAL, DUMAND and NESTOR have a very good chance of detecting neutrinos which originate in the Active Galactic Nuclei.

New Predictions for Neutrino Telescope Event Rates

Recent measurements of the small-$x$ deep-inelastic regime at HERA translate to new expectations for the neutrino-nucleon cross section at ultrahigh energies. We present event rates for large underground neutrino telescopes based on the new cross section for a variety of models of neutrino production in Active Galactic Nuclei, and we compare these rates with earlier cross section calculations.

Ultrahigh-Energy Neutrino Interactions

Cross sections for the interactions of ultrahigh-energy neutrinos with nucleons are evaluated in light of new information about nucleon structure functions. For $10^{20}$--eV neutrinos, the cross section is about 2.4 times previous estimates. We also review the cross sections for neutrino interactions with atomic electrons. Some consequences for interaction rates in the Earth and for event rates from generic astrophysical sources in large-scale detectors are noted.

Small-x Parton Densities from HERA and the Ultra-High Energy Neutrino-Nucleon Cross Sections

In light of recent measurements of the nucleon structure function in the small-$x$ deep-inelastic regime at HERA and the consequently improved theoretical understanding of the quark distributions in this range of parton fractional momentum, we present new results for the neutrino-nucleon cross section at ultra high energies, up to $ E_ν \sim 10^{21}$ eV. The results are relevant to deep underground muon detectors looking for such neutrinos. For $\simeq 10^{20}$ eV neutrinos, our cross sections are about a factor of $4$ to $10$ times larger than the previously reported results by Reno, Quigg and Walker. We discuss implications of this new neutrino-nucleon cross section for a variety of current and future neutrino detectors.

Top-ology

I compare the anticipated properties of the top quark with what is known experimentally about the heaviest fermion. I review the scientific opportunities that will be presented in the near future by copious samples of top. These include refined tests of electroweak radiative corrections, studies of the nature of top itself, and exploration of electroweak symmetry breaking. I conclude by illustrating top's influence in the everyday world.

Quarkonium Wave Functions at the Origin

We tabulate values of the radial Schrödinger wave function or its first nonvanishing derivative at zero quark-antiquark separation, for $c\bar{c}$, $c\bar{b}$, and $b\bar{b}$ levels that lie below, or just above, flavor threshold. These quantities are essential inputs for evaluating production cross sections for quarkonium states.

Mesons with Beauty and Charm: Spectroscopy

Applying knowledge of the interaction between heavy quarks derived from the study of $c\overline{c}$ and $b\overline{b}$ bound states, we calculate the spectrum of $c\overline{b}$ mesons. We compute transition rates for the electromagnetic and hadronic cascades that lead from excited states to the $^1\text{S}_0$ ground state, and briefly consider the prospects for experimental observation of the spectrum.

Properties of Orbitally Excited Heavy-Light Mesons

Orbitally excited heavy-light mesons are potentially important as tools for tagging the flavors and momenta of ground-state pseudoscalars detected through weak decays. We use heavy-quark symmetry supplemented by insights gleaned from potential models to estimate masses and widths of $p$-wave $B$, $B_s$, and $D_s$ mesons. We generalize these results to higher excitations.

Flavor Asymmetry of the Nucleon Sea: Consequences for Dilepton Production

Parton distributions derived from a chiral quark model that generates an excess of down quarks and antiquarks in the proton's sea satisfactorily describe the measured yields of muon pairs produced in proton-nucleus collisions. Comparison of dilepton yields from hydrogen and deuterium targets promises greater sensitivity to the predicted flavor asymmetry.
