Minimal degree of an isogeny between a supersingular elliptic curve and its conjugate

Let $E$ be a supersingular elliptic curve defined over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$ and $E^{(p)}$ be its conjugate. We give a bound on the minimal degree of an isogeny from $E$ to $E^{(p)}$ depending on $p$, and show that this bound is both asymptotically optimal as well as sharp in many cases. This bound is obtained by developing a new technique to compute the degree of certain isogenies from a supersingular elliptic curve to its conjugate, and we present extensive computations of the successive minima of the lattice containing these isogenies. Following this, we give several conjectures supported by the data we have obtained, including some on the set of primes $p$ for which the bound we give in this article is attained.

Inseparable endomorphisms and rank-2 sublattices of the Gross lattice

We answer a question posed by Love asking about a correspondence between isogenies from a supersingular elliptic curve to its Frobenius base-change and rank-2 sublattices of its Gross lattice. We recast the question as one about the inseparable endomorphisms of the curve, and show that the correspondence holds when the trace of the endomorphism is zero, and may not hold otherwise.

Ordinary abelian varieties: isogeny graphs and polarizations

Given an integer $D$ and an ordinary isogeny class of abelian varieties defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ with commutative $\mathbb{F}_q$-endomorphism algebra, we provide algorithms for computing all isogenies of degree dividing $D$ and polarizations of degree dividing $D$. We discuss phenomena that arise for higher dimension abelian varieties but not elliptic curves, bounds on the diameter of the graph of minimal isogenies, and decompositions of isogeny graphs into orbits for the Picard group of the Frobenius order.

Gross lattices of supersingular elliptic curves

Let $p$ be a prime, $E$ be a supersingular elliptic curve defined over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$, and $\mathscr{O}$ be its (geometric) endomorphism ring. Earlier results of Chevyrev-Galbraith and Goren-Love have shown that the successive minima of the Gross lattice of $\mathscr{O}$ characterize the isomorphism class of $\mathscr{O}$. In this paper, we extend this work and show that the value of the third successive minimum $D_3$ of the Gross lattice gives necessary and sufficient conditions for the curve to have its $j$-invariant in the field $\mathbb{F}_p$ or in the set $\mathbb{F}_{p^2} \setminus \mathbb{F}_p$, as well as finer information about the endomorphism ring of $E$ when its $j$-invariant belongs to $\mathbb{F}_p$ and $p \equiv 3 \pmod{4}$. We end our article with an investigation of the geometry of Gross lattices of supersingular elliptic curves.

Labeling abelian varieties over finite fields

We describe a deterministic process to associate a practical, permanent label to isomorphism classes of abelian varieties defined over finite fields with commutative endomorphism algebra as long as they are ordinary or defined over a prime field. In the ordinary case, we also provide labels for the polarizations they admit.

Failing to hash into supersingular isogeny graphs

An important open problem in supersingular isogeny-based cryptography is to produce, without a trusted authority, concrete examples of "hard supersingular curves" that is, equations for supersingular curves for which computing the endomorphism ring is as difficult as it is for random supersingular curves. A related open problem is to produce a hash function to the vertices of the supersingular $\ell$-isogeny graph which does not reveal the endomorphism ring, or a path to a curve of known endomorphism ring. Such a hash function would open up interesting cryptographic applications. In this paper, we document a number of (thus far) failed attempts to solve this problem, in the hope that we may spur further research, and shed light on the challenges and obstacles to this endeavour. The mathematical approaches contained in this article include: (i) iterative root-finding for the supersingular polynomial; (ii) gcd's of specialized modular polynomials; (iii) using division polynomials to create small systems of equations; (iv) taking random walks in the isogeny graph of abelian surfaces; and (v) using quantum random walks.

Determining the primes of bad reduction of CM curves of genus 3

In this paper we introduce a new problem called the Isogenous Embedding Problem (IEP). The existence of solutions to this problem is related to the primes of bad reduction of CM curves of genus $3$ and we can detect potentially good reduction in absence of solutions. We propose an algorithm for computing the solutions to the IEP and run the algorithm through different families of curves. We were able to prove the reduction type of some particular curves at certain primes that were open cases in [LLLR21].

Efficient Differentially Private Secure Aggregation for Federated Learning via Hardness of Learning with Errors

Federated machine learning leverages edge computing to develop models from network user data, but privacy in federated learning remains a major challenge. Techniques using differential privacy have been proposed to address this, but bring their own challenges -- many require a trusted third party or else add too much noise to produce useful models. Recent advances in \emph{secure aggregation} using multiparty computation eliminate the need for a third party, but are computationally expensive especially at scale. We present a new federated learning protocol that leverages a novel differentially private, malicious secure aggregation protocol based on techniques from Learning With Errors. Our protocol outperforms current state-of-the art techniques, and empirical results show that it scales to a large number of parties, with optimal accuracy for any differentially private federated learning scheme.

Isogeny Classes of Abelian Varieties over Finite Fields in the LMFDB

This document is intended to summarize the theory and methods behind fq_isog collection inside the ab_var database in the LMFDB as well as some observations gleaned from these databases. This collection consists of tables of Weil q-polynomials, which by the Honda-Tate theorem are in bijection with isogeny classes of abelian varieties over finite fields.

A robust implementation for solving the $S$-unit equation and several applications

Let $K$ be a number field, and $S$ a finite set of places in $K$ containing all infinite places. We present an implementation for solving the $S$-unit equation $x + y = 1$, $x,y \in\mathscr{O}_{K,S}^\times$ in the computer algebra package SageMath. This paper outlines the mathematical basis for the implementation. We discuss and reference the results of extensive computations, including exponent bounds for solutions in many fields of small degree for small sets $S$. As an application, we prove an asymptotic version of Fermat's Last Theorem for totally real cubic number fields with bounded discriminant where 2 is totally ramified. In addition, we use the implementation to find all solutions to some cubic Ramanujan-Nagell equations.

An inverse Jacobian algorithm for Picard curves

We study the inverse Jacobian problem for the case of Picard curves over $\mathbb{C}$. More precisely, we elaborate on an algorithm that, given a small period matrix $Ω\in \mathbb{C}^{3\times 3}$ corresponding to a principally polarized abelian threefold equipped with an automorphism of order $3$, returns a Legendre-Rosenhain equation for a Picard curve with Jacobian isomorphic to the given abelian variety. Our method corrects a formula obtained by Koike-Weng in [Math. Comp., 74(249):499-518, 2005] which is based on a theorem of Siegel. As a result, we apply the algorithm to obtain (numerically) all the isomorphism classes of Picard curves with maximal complex multiplication attached to the sextic CM-fields with class number at most $4$. In particular, we obtain (conjecturally) the complete list of CM Picard curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. In the appendix, Vincent gives a correction to the generalization of Takase's formula for the inverse Jacobian problem for hyperelliptic curves given in [Balakrishnan-Ionica-Lauter-Vincent, LMS J. Comput. Math., 19(suppl. A):283-300, 2016].

Counterexamples to a Conjecture of Ahmadi and Shparlinski

Ahmadi-Shparlinski conjectured that every ordinary, geometrically simple Jacobian over a finite field has maximal angle rank. Using the L-Functions and Modular Forms Database, we provide two counterexamples to this conjecture in dimension 4.

A characterization of the U(Omega,m) sets of a hyperelliptic curve as Omega and m vary

In this article we consider a certain distinguished set $U(Ω,m) \subseteq \{1,2,\ldots,2g+1,\infty\}$ that can be attached to a marked hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ equipped with a small period matrix $Ω$ for its polarized Jacobian. We show that as $Ω$ and the marking $m$ vary, this set ranges over all possibilities prescribed by an argument of Poor.

Modular invariants for genus 3 hyperelliptic curves

In this article we prove an analogue of a theorem of Lachaud, Ritzenthaler, and Zykin, which allows us to connect invariants of binary oc-tics to Siegel modular forms of genus 3. We use this connection to show that certain modular functions, when restricted to the hyperelliptic locus, assume values whose denominators are products of powers of primes of bad reduction for the associated hyperelliptic curves. We illustrate our theorem with explicit computations. This work is motivated by the study of the value of these modular functions at CM points of the Siegel upper-half space, which, if their denominators are known, can be used to effectively compute models of (hyperelliptic, in our case) curves with CM.

Constructing genus 3 hyperelliptic Jacobians with CM

Given a sextic CM field $K$, we give an explicit method for finding all genus 3 hyperelliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{C}$ whose Jacobians are simple and have complex multiplication by the maximal order of this field, via an approximation of their Rosenhain invariants. Building on the work of Weng, we give an algorithm which works in complete generality, for any CM sextic field $K$, and computes minimal polynomials of the Rosenhain invariants for any period matrix of the Jacobian. This algorithm can be used to generate genus 3 hyperelliptic curves over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$ with a given zeta function by finding roots of the Rosenhain minimal polynomials modulo $p$.

Zeta functions of a class of Artin-Schreier curves with many automorphisms

This paper describes a class of Artin-Schreier curves, generalizing results of Van der Geer and Van der Vlugt to odd characteristic. The automorphism group of these curves contains a large extraspecial group as a subgroup. Precise knowledge of this subgroup makes it possible to compute the zeta functions of the curves in the class over the field of definition of all automorphisms in the subgroup. As a consequence, we obtain new examples of maximal curves.

Weierstrass points on the Drinfeld modular curve $X_0(\mathfrak{p})$

Consider the Drinfeld modular curve $X_0(\mathfrak{p})$ for $\mathfrak{p}$ a prime ideal of $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$. It was previously known that if $j$ is the $j$-invariant of a Weierstrass point of $X_0(\mathfrak{p})$, then the reduction of $j$ modulo $\mathfrak{p}$ is a supersingular $j$-invariant. In this paper we show the converse: Every supersingular $j$-invariant is the reduction modulo $\mathfrak{p}$ of the $j$-invariant of a Weierstrass point of $X_0(\mathfrak{p})$.

On the trace and norm maps from $Γ_0(\mathfrak{p})$ to $\operatorname{GL}_2(A)$

Let $f$ be a Drinfeld modular form for $Γ_0(\mathfrak{p})$. From such a form, one can obtain two forms for the full modular group $\operatorname{GL}_2(A)$: by taking the trace or the norm from $Γ_0(\mathfrak{p})$ to $\operatorname{GL}_2(A)$. In this paper we show some connections between the arithmetic modulo $\mathfrak{p}$ of the coefficients of the $u$-series expansion of $f$ and those of a form closely related to its trace, and of the coefficients of $f$ and those of its norm.
