Moduli-Space Laplacians, Asymptotic Geometry, and the Emergent String Conjecture

At asymptotic limits of moduli spaces of quantum gravity vacua, we argue that the masses of the lightest particle towers are eigenfunctions of the moduli-space Laplacian. The associated eigenvalues are quantized by the Emergent String Conjecture and determine the exponential decay rates of axionic directions in these limits. We also connect the quantization of Laplacian eigenvalues to the spectrum of instantons for the theory. We support our claims with diverse examples that preserve between 4 and 32 supercharges.

Gravity Decoupling and Axionic Shift Symmetries

We analyse the rôle of approximate axionic shift symmetries in gravity-decoupling limits arising in type II Calabi-Yau compactifications. Associated with each shift symmetry there is an axionic string whose tension constrains the gradient of the Kähler potential, as expected in regimes where gravity becomes weakly coupled. The gradients of these tensions define vector fields on moduli space, analogous to those associated with BPS particle masses. Together, they characterise the evolution of different effective field theory sectors along asymptotic limits, encoding both their coupling to gravity and their kinetic mixing. By deriving upper bounds on the inner products of these vector fields, we show that they split into mutually orthogonal subsets, one of which decouples from gravity. Finally, we relate the Laplacian of certain axionic string tensions to a divergent moduli space curvature.

UV/IR relations from the worldsheet

We derive universal scaling relations for the low-energy effective action of string theory, connecting the vacuum energy and gauge couplings to higher-derivative Wilson coefficients. At one-loop in string perturbation theory, these generic parametric relations follow from modular and conformal invariance of the worldsheet, independently of the specific low-energy phase of the theory, and they become non-trivial in species limits. As a result, we substantially strengthen our previous case for the emergent string conjecture and connect UV/IR mixing to swampland principles. We argue that our results persist to higher loops, hinting at a pathway to study strong couplings using dualities. Further accounting for open-string contributions, if any, our results lead to parametric inequalities which reproduce holographic bounds and support the magnetic weak-gravity conjecture and the dark dimension scenario.

Laplacians in Various Dimensions and the Swampland

The species cutoff is a moduli-dependent quantity signaling the onset of quantum gravitational phenomena, whose form can be oftentimes determined from higher-derivative and higher-curvature corrections within low-energy gravitational EFTs. In this work, we point out that these Wilson coefficients are eigenfunctions of an appropriate second-order elliptic operator defined over moduli space in theories with more than four supercharges. This was already known to be the case for the leading $\mathcal{R}^4$-correction to the two-derivative (bosonic) action of maximal supergravity in $d\leq 10$. Here, we reconsider this fact from the Swampland point of view and show how, in $d=10,9,8$, solving a Laplace equation imposes non-trivial restrictions on the species hull vectors. We further argue that this property is also satisfied in settings with less supersymmetry. In particular, we focus on the $\mathcal{R}^4$-operator in minimal supergravity theories in $d=10,9$, and on the leading $\mathcal{R}^2$-term in setups with 8 supercharges in $d=6,5,4$. Finally, we provide a symmetry-based criterion for determining when the relevant elliptic operator should be the Laplacian. A bottom-up rationale for this constraint remains to be fully understood, and we conclude by outlining some compelling possibilities.

Species scale, worldsheet CFTs and emergent geometry

We study infinite-distance limits in the moduli space of perturbative string vacua. The remarkable interplay of string dualities seems to determine a highly non-trivial dichotomy, summarized by the emergent string conjecture, by which in some duality frame either internal dimensions decompactify or a unique critical string becomes tensionless. We investigate whether this pattern persists in potentially non-geometric settings, showing that (a proxy for) the cutoff of the gravitational effective field theory in perturbative type II vacua extracted from a graviton scattering amplitude vanishes if and only if a light tower of states appears. Moreover, under some technical assumptions on the spectrum of conformal weights, the cutoff scales with the spectral gap of the internal conformal field theory in the same manner as in decompactification or emergent string limits, regardless of supersymmetry or whether the internal sector is geometric. As a byproduct, we elucidate the role of the species scale in (de)compactifications and show compatibility between effective field theory and worldsheet approaches in geometric settings with curvature.
