Resonances on geometrically finite graphs

In analogy with the spectral theory of geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds, we initiate the study of resonances on geometrically finite (q+1)-regular graphs of groups. We prove the meromorphic continuation of the resolvent of the adjacency operator on such spaces and give a geometric characterization of the resonant states. In contrast to the hyperbolic surfaces setting, geometrically finite graphs have only finitely many resonances, and these resonances may be computed explicitly, yet they exhibit many of the same qualitative phenomena as in the hyperbolic manifolds setting. Particularly interesting examples arise from algebraic curves over finite fields.

Patterson-Sullivan distributions of finite regular graphs

On finite regular graphs, we construct Patterson-Sullivan distributions associated with eigenfunctions of the discrete Laplace operator via their boundary values on the phase space. These distributions are closely related to Wigner distributions defined via a pseudo-differential calculus on graphs, which appear naturally in the study of quantum chaos. Using a pairing formula, we prove that Patterson-Sullivan distributions are also related to invariant Ruelle distributions arising from the transfer operator of the geodesic flow on the shift space. Both relationships provide discrete analogues of results for compact hyperbolic surfaces obtained by Anantharaman-Zelditch and by Guillarmou-Hilgert-Weich.

Explicit Hilbert spaces for the unitary dual of rank one orthogonal groups and applications

We realize all irreducible unitary representations of the group $\mathrm{SO}_0(n+1,1)$ on explicit Hilbert spaces of vector-valued $L^2$-functions on $\mathbb{R}^n\setminus\{0\}$. The key ingredient in our construction is an explicit expression for the standard Knapp-Stein intertwining operators between arbitrary principal series representations in terms of the Euclidean Fourier transform on a maximal unipotent subgroup isomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^n$. As an application, we describe the space of Whittaker vectors on all irreducible Casselman-Wallach representations. Moreover, the new realizations of the irreducible unitary representations immediately reveal their decomposition into irreducible representations of a parabolic subgroup, thus providing a simple proof of a recent result of Liu-Oshima-Yu.

A Pairing Formula for Resonant States on Finite Regular Graphs

On a finite regular graph, (co)resonant states are eigendistributions of the transfer operator associated to the shift on one-sided infinite non-backtracking paths. We introduce two pairings of resonant and coresonant states, the vertex pairing which involves only the dependence on the initial/terminal vertex of the path, and the geodesic pairing which is given by integrating over all geodesics the evaluation of the coresonant state on the first half of the geodesic times the resonant state on the second half. The main result is that these two pairings coincide up to a constant which depends on the resonance, i.e. the corresponding eigenvalue of the transfer operator.

Edge Laplacians and Edge Poisson Transforms for Graphs

For a finite graph, we establish natural isomorphisms between eigenspaces of a Laplace operator acting on functions on the edges and eigenspaces of a transfer operator acting on functions on one-sided infinite non-backtracking paths. Interpreting the transfer operator as a classical dynamical system and the Laplace operator as its quantization, this result can be viewed as a quantum-classical correspondence. In contrast to previously established quantum-classical correspondences for the vertex Laplacian which exclude certain exceptional spectral parameters, our correspondence is valid for all parameters. This allows us to relate certain spectral quantities to topological properties of the graph such as the cyclomatic number and the 2-colorability. The quantum-classical correspondence for the edge Laplacian is induced by an edge Poisson transform on the universal covering of the graph which is a tree of bounded degree. In the special case of regular trees, we relate both the vertex and the edge Poisson transform to the representation theory of the automorphism group of the tree and study associated operator valued Hecke algebras.

Decomposing large unitaries into multimode devices of arbitrary size

Decomposing complex unitary evolution into a series of constituent components is a cornerstone of practical quantum information processing. While the decompostion of an $n\times n$ unitary into a series of $2\times2$ subunitaries is well established (i.e. beamsplitters and phase shifters in linear optics), we show how this decomposition can be generalised into a series of $m\times m$ multimode devices, where $m>2$. If the cost associated with building each $m\times m$ multimode device is less than constructing with $\frac{m(m-1)}{2}$ individual $2\times 2$ devices, we show that the decomposition of large unitaries into $m\times m$ submatrices is is more resource efficient and exhibits a higher tolerance to errors, than its $2\times 2$ counterpart. This allows larger-scale unitaries to be constructed with lower errors, which is necessary for various tasks, not least Boson sampling, the quantum Fourier transform and quantum simulations.

Spectral Correspondences for Rank One Locally Symmetric Spaces -- The Case of Exceptional Parameters

In this paper we complete the program of relating the Laplace spectrum for rank one compact locally symmetric spaces with the first band Ruelle-Pollicott resonances of the geodesic flow on its sphere bundle. This program was started by Flaminio and Forni for hyperbolic surfaces, continued by Dyatlov, Faure and Guillarmou for real hyperbolic spaces and by Guillarmou, Hilgert and Weich for general rank one spaces. Except for the case of hyperbolic surfaces a countable set of exceptional spectral parameters always left untreated since the corresponding Poisson transforms are neither injective nor surjective. We use vector valued Poisson transforms to treat also the exceptional spectral parameters. For surfaces the exceptional spectral parameters lead to discrete series representations of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb R)$. In higher dimensions the situation is more complicated, but can be described completely.
