VNS Tokamak OpenMC-Serpent Validation for Medical Isotope Studies

The Volumetric Neutron Source (VNS) tokamak is a proposed fusion reactor for testing and qualification of reactor components for future use in a fusion power facility, and has potential use for radioisotope production. The VNS geometry is modeled in the Serpent and OpenMC neutronics codes. Analog neutron-photon coupled simulations are carried out to compare the model's vacuum vessel and blanket components across codes. In the vacuum vessel, neutron and photon flux maps are calculated, while in the blanket region, neutron and photon spectra, (n,T), and (n,2n) reaction rates are calculated and compared between models. The detector response comparisons found the following: neutron flux and (n,T) reactions achieved excellent agreement, the (n,2n) detector response had good agreement, and photon flux had regional discrepancies depending on Serpent tracking used. Hybrid tracking lead to a relative difference of about 20% in the outboard side blanket, where as employment of delta tracking resulted in less than 1% relative difference. On an HPC cluster, Serpent was found to have shorter computation time than OpenMC in neutron photon coupled simulations using both hybrid tracking and delta tracking, but longer in neutron only simulations. An exemplary radioisotope production case is presented for the demonstration of additional VNS capabilities.

Phase-based Ranging in Narrowband Systems with Missing/Interfered Tones

The growth in the number of low-cost narrow band radios such as Bluetooth low energy (BLE) enabled applications such as asset tracking, human behavior monitoring, and keyless entry. The accurate range estimation is a must in such applications. Phase-based ranging has recently gained momentum due to its high accuracy in multipath environment compared to traditional schemes such as ranging based on received signal strength. The phase-based ranging requires tone exchange on multiple frequencies on a uniformly sampled frequency grid. Such tone exchange may not be possible due to some missing tones, e.g., reserved advertisement channels. Furthermore, the IQ values at a given tone may be distorted by interference. In this paper, we proposed two phase-based ranging schemes which deal with the missing/interfered tones. We compare the performance and complexity of the proposed schemes using simulations, complexity analysis, and measurement setups. In particular, we show that for small number of missing/interfered tones, the proposed system based on employing a trained neural network (NN) performs very close to a reference ranging system where there is no missing/interference tones. Interestingly, this high performance is at the cost of negligible additional computational complexity and up to 60.5 Kbytes of additional required memory compared to the reference system, making it an attractive solution for ranging using hardware-limited radios such as BLE.

DEMO Hot Cell and Ex-Vessel Remote Handling

In Europe the work on the specification and design of a Demonstration Power Plant (DEMO) is being carried out by EFDA in the Power Plant Physics and Technology (PPP&T) programme. DEMO will take fusion from experimental research into showing the potential for commercial power generation. This paper describes the first steps being taken towards the design of the DEMO Hot Cell. It will show a comparison of the current DEMO in-vessel maintenance concepts from a Hot Cell perspective, describe a proposed ex-vessel transport system, and summarize the facilities that have been identified as required within the Hot Cell, examine current RH technology and discuss the identified critical development issues.
