Renormalization of QED in an external field

The Schwinger equations of QED are rewritten in three different ways as integral equations involving functional derivatives, which are called weak field, strong field, and SCF quantum electrodynamics. The perturbative solutions of these equations are given in terms of appropriate Feynman diagrams. The Green function that is used as an electron propagator in each case is discussed in detail. The general renormalization rules for each of the three equations are provided both in a non perturbative way (Dyson relations) and for Feynman diagrams.

A quantum field algebra

The Laplace Hopf algebra created by Rota and coll. is generalized to provide an algebraic tool for combinatorial problems of quantum field theory. This framework encompasses commutation relations, normal products, time-ordered products and renormalisation. It considers the operator product and the time-ordered product as deformations of the normal product. In particular, it gives an algebraic meaning to Wick's theorem and it extends the concept of Laplace pairing to prove that the renormalised time-ordered product is an associative deformation of the normal product involving an infinite number of parameters. The parameters themselves form a group: the renormalisation group, which acts on the product instead of on the algebra.

Microscopic Calculation of the Constitutive Relations

Homogenization theory is used to calculate the macroscopic dielectric constant from the quantum microscopic dielectric function in a periodic medium. The method can be used to calculate any macroscopic constitutive relation, but it is illustrated here for the case of electrodynamics of matter. The so-called cell problem of homogenization theory is solved and an explicit expression is given for the macroscopic dielectric constant in a form akin to the Clausius-Mossotti or Lorentz-Lorenz relation. The validity of this expression is checked by showing that the macroscopic dielectric constant is causal and has the expected symmetry properties, and that the average of the microscopic energy density is the macroscopic one. Finally, the general expression is applied to Bloch eigenstates. Finally, the corresponding many-body problem is briefly discussed.

QED Hopf algebras on planar binary trees

In this paper we describe the Hopf algebras on planar binary trees used to renormalize the Feynman propagators of quantum electrodynamics, and the coaction which describes the renormalization procedure. Both structures are related to some semi-direct coproduct of Hopf algebras.

Noncommutative renormalization for massless QED

We study the renormalization of massless QED from the point of view of the Hopf algebra discovered by D. Kreimer. For QED, we describe a Hopf algebra of renormalization which is neither commutative nor cocommutative. We obtain explicit renormalization formulas for the electron and photon propagators, for the vacuum polarization and the electron self-energy, which are equivalent to Zimmermann's forest formula for the sum of all Feynman diagrams at a given order of interaction. Then we extend to QED the Connes-Kreimer map defined by the coupling constant of the theory (i.e. the homomorphism between some formal diffeomorphisms and the Hopf algebra of renormalization) by defining a noncommutative Hopf algebra of diffeomorphisms, and then showing that the renormalization of the electric charge defines a homomorphism between this Hopf algebra and the Hopf algebra of renormalization of QED. Finally we show that Dyson's formulas for the renormalization of the electron and photon propagators can be given in a noncommutative (e.g. matrix-valued) form.

Renormalization of QED with planar binary trees

The renormalized photon and electron propagators are expanded over planar binary trees. Explicit recurrence solutions are given for the terms of these expansions. In the case of massless Quantum Electrodynamics (QED), the relation between renormalized and bare expansions is given in terms of a Hopf algebra structure. For massive quenched QED, the relation between renormalized and bare expansions is given explicitly.

Nonlinear Perturbation Theory

An explicit perturbative solution to all orders is given for a general class of nonlinear differential equations. This solution is written as a sum indexed by rooted trees and uses the Green function of a linearization of the equations. The modifications due to the presence of zero-modes is considered. Possible divergence of the integrals can be avoided by using approximate Green functions.

Runge-Kutta methods and renormalization

A connection between the algebra of rooted trees used in renormalization theory and Runge-Kutta methods is pointed out. Butcher's group and B-series are shown to provide a suitable framework for renormalizing a toy model of field the ory, following Kreimer's approach. Finally B-series are used to solve a class of non-linear partial differential equations.
