Radiation dominated era and the power of general relativity

An analysis in the framework of the radiation dominated era permits to put bounds on the weak modification of general relativity which arises from the Lagrangian R^{1+epsilon}. Such a theory has been recently discussed in various papers in the literature. The new bounds together with previous ones in the literature rule out this theory in an ultimate way.

Effective temperature, Hawking radiation and quasinormal modes

Parikh and Wilczek have shown that Hawking radiation's spectrum cannot be strictly thermal. Such a non-strictly thermal character implies that the spectrum is also not strictly continuous and thus generates a natural correspondence between Hawking radiation and black hole's quasinormal modes. This issue endorses the idea that, in an underlying unitary quantum gravity theory, black holes result highly excited states. We use this key point to re-analyze the spectrum of black hole's quasinormal modes by introducing a black hole's effective temperature. Our analysis changes the physical understanding of such a spectrum and enables a re-examination of various results in the literature which realizes important modifies on quantum physics of black holes. In particular, the formula of the horizon's area quantization and the number of quanta of area are modified becoming functions of the quantum "overtone" number n. Consequently, Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, its sub-leading corrections and the number of microstates, i.e. quantities which are fundamental to realize unitary quantum gravity theory, are also modified. They become functions of the quantum overtone number too. Previous results in the literature are re-obtained in the very large n limit.

The Ligo-Ligo cross correlation for the detection of relic scalar gravitational waves

In the earlier work arXiv:0706.3782 we studied the cross correlation between the Virgo interferometer and the MiniGRAIL resonant sphere for the detection of relic scalar gravitational waves (SGWs). We have shown that the overlap reduction function for the cross correlation between Virgo and the monopole mode of MiniGRAIL is very small, but a maximum was also found in the correlation at about 2710Hz, in the range of the MiniGRAIL sensitivity. In this paper the analysis is improved. After carefully reviewing the response function of interferometers to SGWs directly in the gauge of the local observer, the result is used to analyze the cross correlation between the two LIGO interferometers in their advanced configuration for a potential detection of relic SGWs and to release a lower bound for the integration time of such a detection. By using a new, frequency-dependent, overlap reduction function, a comparison with previous low-frequency approximations is therefore discussed. This is the first time that such a cross-correlation is computed in all the frequency spectrum of relic SGWs. The computation of a better signal to noise ratio is very important to understand if a scalar component of GWs is present at high frequency. With the new overlap reduction function, an order of magnitude is gained concerning the integration time for detecting the relic SGWs' signal. This could be very important for a potential detection if advanced projects further improve their sensitivity. .

Theoretical corrections on scalar gravitational waves

Following some ideas in the Landau book, some corrections about errors in the old literature on scalar gravitational waves are given and discussed. Even if such errors can be considered not important from the point of view of observations, because they do not alter the interferometric response function for scalar gravitational waves, the presented analysis is due and very important for a sake of completeness and for a better understanding of the linearized theory of Scalar-Tensor Gravity

Tuning the stochastic background of gravitational waves using the WMAP data

The cosmological bound of the stochastic background of gravitational waves is analyzed with the aid of the WMAP data, differently from lots of works in literature, where the old COBE data were used. From our analysis, it will result that the WMAP bounds on the energy spectrum and on the characteristic amplitude of the stochastic background of gravitational waves are greater than the COBE ones, but they are also far below frequencies of the earth-based antennas band. At the end of this letter a lower bound for the integration time of a potential detection with advanced LIGO is released and compared with the previous one arising from the old COBE data. Even if the new lower bound is minor than the previous one, it results very long, thus for a possible detection we hope in the LISA interferometer and in a further growth in the sensitivity of advanced projects.

Primordial gravity's breath

By releasing a formula that directly connects the average amplitude of the relic stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB) with the Inflaton field and the equation for the characteristic amplitude h_c for the relic SGWB, in this paper the upper bounds on the relic SGWB from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) Scientific Collaboration (LSC) data are translated in lower bounds on the Inflaton field. The results show that the value of the Inflaton field that arises from the WMAP bound on the relic SGWB is totally consistent with the famous slow roll condition on Inflation, while the value of the Inflaton field that arises from the LSC bound on the relic SGWB could not be consistent with such a condition. In any case, the analysis in this paper shows that the detection of the SGWB will permit a direct measure of the value of the Inflaton field by giving an extraordinary precious and precise information about the early Universe's dynamics. In other words, the detection of the SGWB will permit to auscultate the "primordial gravity's breath".

High-energy scalarons in R^{2} gravity as a model for Dark Matter in galaxies

We show that in the framework of R^{2} gravity and in the linearized approach it is possible to obtain spherically symmetric stationary states that can be used as a model for galaxies. The model can also help to have a better understanding on the theoretical basis of Einstein-Vlasov systems. Specifically, we discuss, in the linearized R^{2} gravity, the solutions of a Klein-Gordon equation for the spacetime curvature. Such solutions describe high energy scalarons, a field that in the context of galactic dynamics can be interpreted like the no-light-emitting galactic component. That is, these particles can be figured out like wave-packets showing stationary solutions in the Einstein-Vlasov system. As pertinent to the issue under analysis in this paper, we present an analysis on the gravitational lensing phenomena within this framework. Although the main goal of this paper is to give a potential solution to the Dark Matter Problem within galaxies, we add a Section where we show that an important property of the Bullet Cluster can in principle be explained in the scenario introduced in this work. To the end, we discuss the generic prospective to give rise to the Dark Matter component of most galaxies within extended gravity.

Cosmology of Einstein-Vlasov system in a weak modification of general relativity

In earlier work it was shown that a weak modification of general relativity, in the linearized approach, renders a spherically symmetric and stationary model of the Universe. This was due to the presence of a third mode of polarization in the linearized gravity in which a "curvature energy" term is present. Such term was identified as the Dark Energy of the Universe. In this letter a more realistic model is discussed. A different cosmological solution to the Einstein-Vlasov System is analysed. This solution shows reasonable results which are within the standard bounds predicted by the cosmological observations.

Effective temperature for black holes

The physical interpretation of black hole's quasinormal modes is fundamental for realizing unitary quantum gravity theory as black holes are considered theoretical laboratories for testing models of such an ultimate theory and their quasinormal modes are natural candidates for an interpretation in terms of quantum levels. The spectrum of black hole's quasinormal modes can be re-analysed by introducing a black hole's effective temperature which takes into account the fact that, as shown by Parikh and Wilczek, the radiation spectrum cannot be strictly thermal. This issue changes in a fundamental way the physical understanding of such a spectrum and enables a re-examination of various results in the literature which realizes important modifies on quantum physics of black holes. In particular, the formula of the horizon's area quantization and the number of quanta of area result modified becoming functions of the quantum "overtone" number n. Consequently, the famous formula of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, its sub-leading corrections and the number of microstates are also modified. Black hole's entropy results a function of the quantum overtone number too. We emphasize that this is the first time that black hole's entropy is directly connected with a quantum number. Previous results in the literature are re-obtained in the limit n \to \infty.

Irreversible gravitational collapse: black stars or black holes?

It is well known that the concept of black hole has been considered very fascinating by scientists even before the introduction of Einstein's general relativity. They should be the final result of an irreversible gravitational collapse of very massive bodies. However, an unsolved problem concerning such objects is the presence of a space-time singularity in their core. Such a problem was present starting by the first historical papers concerning black holes. It is a common opinion that this problem could be solved when a correct quantum gravity theory will be, finally, constructed. In this work we review a way to remove black hole singularities at a classical level i.e. without arguments of quantum gravity. By using a particular non-linear electrodynamics Lagrangian, an exact solution of Einstein field equations is shown. The solution prevents the collapsing object to reach the gravitational radius, thus the final result becomes a black star, i.e. an astrophysical object where both of singularities and event horizons are removed. Such solution is not only a mathematical artifice. In fact, this kind of Lagrangian has been recently used in various analysis in astrophysics, like surface of neutron stars and pulsars. The authors also recently adapted the analysis on a cosmological context by showing that the big-bang singularity can be removed too.

A clarification on the debate on "the original Schwarzschild solution"

Now that English translations of Schwarzschild's original paper exist, that paper has become accessible to more people. Historically, the so-called "standard Schwarzschild solution" was not the original Schwarzschild's work, but it is actually due to J. Droste and, independently, H. Weyl, while it has been ultimately enabled like correct solution by D. Hilbert. Based on this, there are authors who claim that the work of Hilbert was wrong and that Hilbert's mistake spawned black-holes and the community of theoretical physicists continues to elaborate on this falsehood, with a hostile shouting down of any and all voices challenging them. In this paper we re-analyse "the original Schwarzschild solution" and we show that it is totally equivalent to the solution enabled by Hilbert. Thus, the authors who claim that "the original Schwarzschild solution" implies the non existence of black holes give the wrong answer. We realize that the misunderstanding is due to an erroneous interpretation of the different coordinates. In fact, arches of circumference appear to follow the law dl = rdϕ, if the origin of the coordinate system is a non-dimensional material point in the core of the black-hole, while they do not appear to follow such a law, but to be deformed by the presence of the mass of the central body M if the origin of the coordinate system is the surface of the Schwarzschild sphere.

Generalized gauge-invariance for gravitational waves

The aim of this paper is to show the gauge-invariance on the response of interferometers to gravitational waves (GWs). In this process, after a review of results on the Tranverse-Traceless (TT) gauge, where, in general, the theoretical computations on GWs are performed, which is due for completness, we analyse the gauge of the local observer, which represents the gauge of a laboratory environment on Earth. The gauge-invariance between the two gauges is shown in its full angular and frequency dependences. In previous works in the literature this gauge-invariance was shown only in the low frequencies approximation or in the simplest geometry of the interferometer in respect to the propagating GW (i.e. both of the arms of the interferometer are perpendicular to the propagating GW). As far as the computation of the response functions in the gauge of the local observer is concerned, a common misconception about interferometers is also clarifed.

A clarification on a common misconception about interferometric detectors of gravitational waves

The aims of this letter are two. First, to show the angular gauge-invariance on the response of interferometers to gravitational waves (GWs). In this process, after resuming for completeness results on the Transverse-Traceless (TT) gauge, where, in general, the theoretical computations on GWs are performed, we analyse the gauge of the local observer, which represents the gauge of a laboratory environment on Earth. The gauge-invariance between the two gauges is shown in its full angular and frequency dependences. In previous works in the literature this gauge-invariance was shown only in the low frequencies approximation or in the simplest geometry of the interferometer with respect to the propagating GW (i.e. both of the arms of the interferometer are perpendicular to the propagating GW). Second, as far as the computation of the response functions in the gauge of the local observer is concerned, a common misconception about interferometers is also clarified. Such a misconception purports that, as the wavelength of laser light and the length of an interferometer's arm are both stretched by a GW, no effect should be visible, invoking an analogy with cosmological redshift in an expanding universe.

Removing black-hole singularities with nonlinear electrodynamics

We propose a way to remove black hole singularities by using a particular nonlinear electrodynamics Lagrangian that has been recently used in various astrophysics and cosmological frameworks. In particular, we adapt the cosmological analysis discussed in a previous work to the black hole physics. Such analysis will be improved by applying the Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation to the black hole case. At the end, fixed the radius of the star, the final density depends only on the introduced quintessential density term $ρ_γ$ and on the mass.

A precise response function for the magnetic component of Gravitational Waves in Scalar-Tensor Gravity

The important issue of the magnetic component of gravitational waves (GWs) has been considered in various papers in the literature. From such analyses, it resulted that such a magnetic component becomes particularly important in the high frequency portion of the frequency range of ground based interferometers for GWs which arises from standard General Theory of Relativity (GTR). Recently, such a magnetic component has been extended to GWs arising from Scalar-Tensor Gravity (STG) too. After a review of some important issues on GWs in STG, in this paper we re-analyse the magnetic component in the framework of STG from a different point of view, by correcting an error in a previous paper and by releasing a more precise response function. In this way, we also show that if one neglects the magnetic contribution considering only the low-frequency approximation of the electric contribution, an important part of the signal could be, in principle, lost. The determination of a more precise response function for the magnetic contribution is important also in the framework of the possibility to distinguish other gravitational theories from GTR. At the end of the paper an expansion of the main results is also shown in order to recall the presence of the magnetic component in GRT too.

On the correctness of Relative Time Dilatation in Special Relativity in vacuum: a rebuttal against the claims by Arthur Boltcho in European Journal of Scientific Research ISSN 1450-216X Vol. 44 No. 4 (2010), pp. 610-611

In his recent paper published in the European Journal of Scientific Research 44, 4, 610-611 (2010), the author, Arthur Boltcho, claims to have found a mathematical disproof of relative time dilatation of Special Relativity Theory (SRT). In this letter we show that the supposed mathematical disproof of relative time dilatation of SRT is totally wrong and that Arthur Boltcho demonstrated nothing. The errors by Boltcho arise from a strong misunderstanding and confusing the concept of "moments" and time intervals in the framework of SRT.

Gravitational wave astronomy: the definitive test for the "Einstein frame versus Jordan frame" controversy

The potential realization of a gravitational wave (GW) astronomy in next years is a great challenge for the scientific community. By giving a significant amount of new information, GWs will be a cornerstone for a better understanding of the universe and of the gravitational physics. In this paper the author shows that the GW astronomy will permit to solve a captivating issue of gravitation as it will be the definitive test for the famous "Einstein frame versus Jordan frame" controversy. In fact, we show that the motion of the test masses, i.e. the beam splitter and the mirror in the case of an interferometer, which is due to the scalar component of a GW, is different in the two frames. Thus, if a consistent GW astronomy will be realized, an eventual detection of signals of scalar GWs will permit to discriminate among the two frames. In this way, a direct evidence from observations will solve in an ultimate way the famous and long history of the "Einstein frame versus Jordan frame" controversy.

Inflation from R^2 gravity: a new approach using nonlinear electrodynamics

We discuss another approach regarding the inflation from the R^2 theory of gravity originally proposed by Starobinski. A non-singular early cosmology is proposed, where, adding a nonlinear electrodynamics Lagrangian to the high-order action, a bouncing is present and a power-law inflation is obtained. In the model the Ricci scalar works like an inflaton field.
