On topological and algebraic structures of categorical random variables

Based on entropy and symmetrical uncertainty (SU), we define a metric for categorical random variables and show that this metric can be promoted into an appropriate quotient space of categorical random variables. Moreover, we also show that there is a natural commutative monoid structure in the same quotient space, which is compatible with the topology induced by the metric, in the sense that the monoid operation is continuous.

Impulsive Release Strategies for Wolbachia-Infected Mosquitoes under Temperature-Induced Infection Loss

The release of Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes is a promising strategy for controlling Aedes aegypti populations, but exposure to high temperatures can induce temporary infection loss and compromise long-term persistence. In this work, we propose a population-dynamics model based on impulsive differential equations to describe the interaction between wild and infected mosquitoes, incorporating cytoplasmic incompatibility, periodic release interventions, and temperature-driven infection loss. Analytical threshold conditions are derived to characterize the existence and stability of periodic solutions associated with successful Wolbachia establishment. Numerical simulations illustrate the theoretical results and enable a comparative analysis of the wMelPop, wMel, and wAlbB strains, highlighting how differences in thermal tolerance and fitness costs influence persistence after the release phase. The results emphasize the importance of accounting for environmental stress and impulsive interventions when designing effective and robust Wolbachia release strategies.

A posteriori error estimates for mixed-dimensional Darcy flow using non-matching grids

In this article, we extend the a posteriori error estimates for hierarchical mixed-dimensional elliptic equations developed in [Varela et al., J. Numer. Math., 48 (2023), pp. 247-280] to the setting of non-matching mixed-dimensional grids. The extension is achieved by introducing transfer grids between the planar subdomain and interface grids, together with stable discrete projection operators for primal (potential) and dual (flux) variables. The proposed non-matching estimators remain fully guaranteed and computable. Numerical experiments, including three-dimensional problems based on community benchmarks for incompressible Darcy flow in fractured porous media, demonstrate reliable performance of the estimators for the non-matching grids and effectivity that is comparable to the estimators for matching grids.

Optimizing Impulsive Releases: A Species Competition Model

This study focuses on optimizing species release $S_2$ to control species population $S_1$ through impulsive release strategies. We investigate the conditions required to remove species $S_1$, which is equivalent to the establishment of $S_2$. The research includes a theoretical analysis that examines the positivity, existence, and uniqueness of solutions, the conditions ensuring global stability, and a sufficient condition for controlling the $S_1$-free solution. In addition, we formulate an optimal control problem to maximize the effectiveness of $S_2$ releases, manage the population of $S_1$, and minimize the costs associated with this intervention strategy. Numerical simulations are conducted to validate the proposed theories and allow visualization of population dynamics under various release scenarios.

Feature Selection: A perspective on inter-attribute cooperation

High-dimensional datasets depict a challenge for learning tasks in data mining and machine learning. Feature selection is an effective technique in dealing with dimensionality reduction. It is often an essential data processing step prior to applying a learning algorithm. Over the decades, filter feature selection methods have evolved from simple univariate relevance ranking algorithms to more sophisticated relevance-redundancy trade-offs and to multivariate dependencies-based approaches in recent years. This tendency to capture multivariate dependence aims at obtaining unique information about the class from the intercooperation among features. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art work on filter feature selection methods assisted by feature intercooperation, and summarizes the contributions of different approaches found in the literature. Furthermore, current issues and challenges are introduced to identify promising future research and development.

A Herglotz-based integrator for nonholonomic mechanical systems

We propose a numerical scheme for the time-integration of nonholonomic mechanical systems, both conservative and nonconservative. The scheme is obtained by simultaneously discretizing the constraint equations and the Herglotz variational principle. We validate the method using numerical simulations and contrast them against the results of standard methods from the literature.

A posteriori superlinear convergence bounds for block conjugate gradient

In this paper, we extend to the block case, the a posteriori bound showing superlinear convergence of Conjugate Gradients developed in [J. Comput. Applied Math., 48 (1993), pp. 327-341]; that is, we obtain similar bounds, but now for block Conjugate Gradients. We also present a series of computational experiments illustrating the validity of the bound developed here, as well as the bound from [SIAM Review, 47 (2005), pp. 247-272] using angles between subspaces. Using these bounds, we make some observations on the onset of superlinearity, and how this onset depends on the eigenvalue distribution and the block size.
