Charged perfect fluids in the presence of a cosmological constant

We consider the static and spherically symmetric field equations of general relativity for charged perfect fluid spheres in the presence of a cosmological constant. Following work by Florides (1983) we find new exact solutions of the field equations, and discuss their mass radius ratios. These solutions, for instance, require the charged Nariai metric to be the vacuum part of the spacetime. We also find charged generalizations of the Einstein static universe and speculate that the smallness problem of the cosmological constant might become less problematic if charge is taken into account.

Existence of relativistic stars in f(T) gravity

We examine the existence of relativistic stars in f(T) modified gravity and explicitly construct several classes of static perfect fluid solutions. We derive the conservation equation from the complete f(T) gravity field equations and present the differences with its teleparallel counterpart. Firstly, we choose the tetrad field in the diagonal gauge and study the resulting field equations. Some exact solutions are explicitly constructed and it is noted that these solutions have to give a constant torsion scalar. Next, we choose a non diagonal tetrad field which results in field equations similar to those of general relativity. For specific models we are able to construct exact solutions of these field equations. Among those new classes of solutions, we find negative pressure solutions, and an interesting class of polynomial solutions.

Rotational elasticity

We consider an infinite 3-dimensional elastic continuum whose material points experience no displacements, only rotations. This framework is a special case of the Cosserat theory of elasticity. Rotations of material points are described mathematically by attaching to each geometric point an orthonormal basis which gives a field of orthonormal bases called the coframe. As the dynamical variables (unknowns) of our theory we choose the coframe and a density. We write down the general dynamic variational functional for our rotational theory of elasticity, assuming our material to be physically linear but the kinematic model geometrically nonlinear. Allowing geometric nonlinearity is natural when dealing with rotations because rotations in dimension 3 are inherently nonlinear (rotations about different axes do not commute) and because there is no reason to exclude from our study large rotations such as full turns. The main result of the paper is an explicit construction of a class of time-dependent solutions which we call plane wave solutions; these are travelling waves of rotations. The existence of such explicit closed form solutions is a nontrivial fact given that our system of Euler-Lagrange equations is highly nonlinear. In the last section we consider a special case of our rotational theory of elasticity which in the stationary setting (harmonic time dependence and arbitrary dependence on spatial coordinates) turns out to be equivalent to a pair of massless Dirac equations.

Evolution of sub-horizon cold dark matter perturbations

We investigate the evolution of sub-horizon cold dark matter perturbation in the dark energy dominated era of the Universe. By generalising the Meszaros equation to be valid for an arbitrary equation of state parameter, we derive the $w$-Meszaros equation. Its solutions determine the evolution of the cold dark matter perturbation by neglecting dark energy perturbations. Our analytical results provide a qualitative understanding of this evolution.

Classical tests of general relativity in brane world models

The classical tests of general relativity (perihelion precession, deflection of light, and the radar echo delay) are considered for several spherically symmetric static vacuum solutions in brane world models. Generally, the spherically symmetric vacuum solutions of the brane gravitational field equations have properties quite distinct as compared to the standard black hole solutions of general relativity. As a first step a general formalism that facilitates the analysis of general relativistic Solar System tests for any given spherically symmetric metric is developed. It is shown that the existing observational Solar System data on the perihelion shift of Mercury, on the light bending around the Sun (obtained using long-baseline radio interferometry), and ranging to Mars using the Viking lander, constrain the numerical values of the parameters of the specific models.

Dark spinor models in gravitation and cosmology

We introduce and carefully define an entire class of field theories based on non-standard spinors. Their dominant interaction is via the gravitational field which makes them naturally dark; we refer to them as Dark Spinors. We provide a critical analysis of previous proposals for dark spinors noting that they violate Lorentz invariance. As a working assumption we restrict our analysis to non-standard spinors which preserve Lorentz invariance, whilst being non-local and explicitly construct such a theory. We construct the complete energy-momentum tensor and derive its components explicitly by assuming a specific projection operator. It is natural to next consider dark spinors in a cosmological setting. We find various interesting solutions where the spinor field leads to slow roll and fast roll de Sitter solutions. We also analyse models where the spinor is coupled conformally to gravity, and consider the perturbations and stability of the spinor.

Nonlinear stability analysis of the Emden-Fowler equation

In this paper we qualitatively study radial solutions of the semilinear elliptic equation $Δu + u^n = 0$ with $u(0)=1$ and $u'(0)=0$ on the positive real line, called the Emden-Fowler or Lane-Emden equation. This equation is of great importance in Newtonian astrophysics and the constant $n$ is called the polytropic index. By introducing a set of new variables, the Emden-Fowler equation can be written as an autonomous system of two ordinary differential equations which can be analyzed using linear and nonlinear stability analysis. We perform the study of stability by using linear stability analysis, the Jacobi stability analysis (Kosambi-Cartan-Chern theory) and the Lyapunov function method. Depending on the values of $n$ these different methods yield different results. We identify a parameter range for $n$ where all three methods imply stability.

CMB Anisotropies and Inflation from Non-Standard Spinors

The apparent alignment of the cosmic microwave background multipoles on large scales challenges the standard cosmological model. Scalar field inflation is isotropic and cannot account for the observed alignment. We explore the imprints, a non-standard spinor driven inflation would leave on the cosmic microwave background anisotropies. We show it is natural to expect an anisotropic inflationary expansion of the Universe which has the effect of suppressing the low multipole amplitude of the primordial power spectrum, while at the same time to provide the usual inflationary features.

Quintessence with quadratic coupling to dark matter

We introduce a new form of coupling between dark energy and dark matter that is quadratic in their energy densities. Then we investigate the background dynamics when dark energy is in the form of exponential quintessence. The three types of quadratic coupling all admit late-time accelerating critical points, but these are not scaling solutions. We also show that two types of coupling allow for a suitable matter era at early times and acceleration at late times, while the third type of coupling does not admit a suitable matter era.

Stability of the Einstein static universe in IR modified Hořava gravity

Recently, Horava proposed a power counting renormalizable theory for (3+1)-dimensional quantum gravity, which reduces to Einstein gravity with a non-vanishing cosmological constant in IR, but possesses improved UV behaviors. In this work, we analyze the stability of the Einstein static universe by considering linear homogeneous perturbations in the context of an IR modification of Horava gravity, which implies a `soft' breaking of the `detailed balance' condition. The stability regions of the Einstein static universe are parameterized by the linear equation of state parameter w=p/ρand the parameters appearing in the Horava theory, and it is shown that a large class of stable solutions exists in the respective parameter space.

Bounds on M/R for static objects with a positive cosmological constant

We consider spherically symmetric static solutions of the Einstein equations with a positive cosmological constant $Λ,$ which are regular at the centre, and we investigate the influence of $Λ$ on the bound of M/R, where M is the ADM mass and R is the area radius of the boundary of the static object. We find that for any solution which satisfies the energy condition $p+2p_{\perp}\leqρ,$ where $p\geq 0$ and $p_{\perp}$ are the radial and tangential pressures respectively, and $ρ\geq 0$ is the energy density, and for which $0\leq ΛR^2\leq 1,$ the inequality \frac{M}{R}\leq\frac29-\frac{ΛR^2}{3}+\frac29 \sqrt{1+3ΛR^2}, holds. If $Λ=0$ it is known that infinitely thin shell solutions uniquely saturate the inequality, i.e. the inequality is sharp in that case. The situation is quite different if $Λ>0.$ Indeed, we show that infinitely thin shell solutions do not generally saturate the inequality except in the two degenerate situations $ΛR^2=0$ and $ΛR^2=1$. In the latter situation there is also a constant density solution, where the exterior spacetime is the Nariai solution, which saturates the inequality, hence, the saturating solution is non-unique. In this case the cosmological horizon and the black hole horizon coincide. This is analogous to the charged situation where there is numerical evidence that uniqueness of the saturating solution is lost when the inner and outer horizons of the Reissner-Nordström solution coincide.

Dark energy with dark spinors

Ever since the first observations that we are living in an accelerating universe, it has been asked what dark energy is. There are various explanations all of which with have various draw backs or inconsistencies. Here we show that using a dark spinor field it is possible to have an equation of state that crosses the phantom divide, becoming a dark phantom spinor which evolves into dark energy. This type of equation of state has been mildly favored by experimental data, however, in the past there were hardly any candidate theories that satisfied this crossing without creating ghosts or causing a singularity which results in the universe essentially ripping. The dark spinor model converges to dark energy in a reasonable time frame avoiding the big rip and without attaining negative kinetic energy as it crosses the phantom divide.

Stability of the Einstein static universe in modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We analyze the stability of the Einstein static universe by considering homogeneous perturbations in the context of f(G) modified Gauss-Bonnet theories of gravity. By considering a generic form of f(G), the stability region of the Einstein static universe is parameterized by the linear equation of state parameter w=p/rho and the second derivative f"(G) of the Gauss-Bonnet term.

Einstein static universes are unstable in generic f(R) models

We study Einstein static universes in the context of generic f(R) models. It is shown that Einstein static solutions exist for a wide variety of modified gravity models sourced by a barotropic perfect fluid with equation of state w=p/rho, but these solutions are always unstable to either homogeneous or inhomogeneous perturbations. Our general results are in agreement with specific models investigated in that past. We also discuss how our techniques can be applied to other scenarios in f(R) gravity.

Dark spinors with torsion in cosmology

We solve one of the open problems in Einstein-Cartan theory, namely we find a natural matter source whose spin angular momentum tensor is compatible with the cosmological principle. We analyze the resulting evolution equations and find that an epoch of accelerated expansion is an attractor. The torsion field quickly decays in that period. Our results are interpreted in the context of the standard model of cosmology.

Stability of the Schwarzschild Interior in Loop Quantum Gravity

In recent work, the Schwarzschild interior of a black hole was investigated, incorporating quantum gravitational modifications due to loop quantum gravity. The central Schwarzschild singularity was shown to be replaced by a Nariai type universe. In this brief report we show that this interior solution is stable with respect to small perturbations, in contrast to the classical Nariai universe.
