Pluricanonical Geometry of Varieties Isogenous to a Product and Abelian Covers

We study canonical and pluricanonical maps of varieties isogenous to a product of curves, i.e., quotients of the form $X = (C_1 \times \dots \times C_n)/G$ with $g(C_i)\ge 2$ and $G$ acting freely. For this purpose, we provide a technical result which is of general interest: a decomposition theorem for pluricanonical systems of abelian covers. This theorem provides an effective tool for the explicit study of geometric properties, such as base loci and the birationality of pluricanonical maps. For threefolds isogenous to a product, we prove that the 4-canonical map is birational for $p_g \ge 5$ and construct an example attaining the maximal canonical degree for this class of threefolds. In this example, the canonical map is the normalization of its image, which admits isolated non-normal singularities. Computational classifications also reveal threefolds where the bicanonical map fails to be birational, even in the absence of genus-2 fibrations. This illustrates an interesting phenomenon similar to the non-standard case for surfaces.

Computation of Singular Godeaux Surfaces and a New Explicit Fake Quadric (With an Appendix by Christian Gleissner and Noah Ruhland)

We present a computational method for detecting highly singular members in families of algebraic varieties. Applying this approach to a family of numerical Godeaux surfaces, we obtain explicit examples with many singularities. In particular, we construct a Godeaux surface whose singular locus consists of two $\mathsf A_1$ and two $\mathsf A_3$ singularities. We show that this surface admits a $\mathbb{Z}/2 \times \mathbb{Z}/4$ abelian cover which is a smooth minimal surface of general type with invariants $K^2=8$ and $p_g=0$, i.e. a fake quadric. Together with the result in the Appendix, this provides the first explicit construction of a fake quadric that does not arise as a quotient of a product of curves.

On Rigid Varieties Isogenous to a Product of Curves

In this note, we study rigid complex manifolds that are realized as quotients of a product of curves by a free action of a finite group. They serve as higher-dimensional analogues of Beauville surfaces. Using uniformization, we outline the theory to characterize these manifolds through specific combinatorial data associated with the group under the assumption that the action is diagonal and the manifold is of general type. This leads to the notion of a $n$-fold Beauville structure. We define an action on the set of all $n$-fold Beauville structures of a given finite group that allows us to distinguish the biholomorphism classes of the underlying rigid manifolds. As an application, we give a classification of these manifolds with group $\mathbb Z_5^2$ in the three dimensional case and prove that this is the smallest possible group that allows a rigid, free and diagonal action on a product of three curves. In addition, we provide the classification of rigid 3-folds $X$ given by a group acting faithfully on each factor for any value of the holomorphic Euler number $\chi(\mathcal O_X) \geq -5$.

On the cohomologically trivial automorphisms of elliptic surfaces I: $\chi(S)=0$

In this first part we describe the group $Aut_{\mathbb{Z}}(S)$ of cohomologically trivial automorphisms of a properly elliptic surface (a minimal surface $S$ with Kodaira dimension $\kappa(S)=1$), in the initial case $ \chi(\mathcal{O}_S) =0$. In particular, in the case where $Aut_{\mathbb{Z}}(S)$ is finite, we give the upper bound 4 for its cardinality, showing more precisely that if $Aut_{\mathbb{Z}}(S)$ is nontrivial, it is one of the following groups: $\mathbb{Z}/2, \mathbb{Z}/3, (\mathbb{Z}/2)^2$. We also show with easy examples that the groups $\mathbb{Z}/2, \mathbb{Z}/3$ do effectively occur. Respectively, in the case where $Aut_{\mathbb{Z}}(S)$ is infinite, we give the sharp upper bound 2 for the number of its connected components.

On Rigid Manifolds of Kodaira Dimension 1

We discuss rigid compact complex manifolds of Kodaira dimension 1, arising as product-quotient varieties. First, we show that there is no free rigid action on the product of $(n-1)$ elliptic curves and a curve of genus at least two. Then, we describe the occurring groups, study the quotients and prove that there is always a suitable resolution of singularities preserving rigidity. Finally, we give a complete classification of the cases arising for minimal group orders.

Semi-Projective Representations and Twisted Representation Groups

A semi-projective representation is a homomorphism of a finite group into the group of semi-projective transformations of a finite dimensional vector space over a field. Schur's concept of a representation group for projective representations is extended to semi-projective representations under the assumption that the field is algebraically closed. A computer algorithm is given that produces, for a given finite group, all such twisted representation groups under trivial or conjugation actions on the field of complex numbers.

Some surfaces with canonical maps of degree $10$, $11$ and $14$

In this note we present examples of complex algebraic surfaces of general type with canonical maps of degree $10$, $11$ and $14$. They are constructed as quotients of a product of two Fermat septics using certain free actions of the group $\mathbb Z_7^2$.

The Classification of Rigid Hyperelliptic Fourfolds

We provide a fine classification of rigid hyperelliptic manifolds in dimension four up to biholomorphism and diffeomorphism. These manifolds are explicitly described as finite \'etale quotients of a product of four Fermat elliptic curves.

Towards a Classification of Rigid Product Quotient Varieties of Kodaira Dimension 0

In this paper the authors study quotients of the product of elliptic curves by a rigid diagonal action of a finite group $G$. It is shown that only for $G = \operatorname{He(3)}, \mathbb Z_3^2$, and only for dimension $\geq 4$ such an action can be free. A complete classification of the singular quotients in dimension 3 and the smooth quotients in dimension $4$ is given. For the other finite groups a strong structure theorem for rigid quotients is proven.

Fermat's Cubic, Klein's Quartic and Rigid Complex Manifolds of Kodaira Dimension One

For each $n \geq 3$ the authors provide an $n$-dimensional rigid compact complex manifold of Kodaira dimension $1$. First they construct a series of singular quotients of products of $(n-1)$ Fermat curves with the Klein quartic, which are rigid. Then using toric geometry a suitable resolution of singularities is constructed and the deformation theories of the singular model and of the resolutions are compared, showing the rigidity of the resolutions.

The pluricanonical systems of a product-quotient variety

We give a method for the computation of the plurigenera of a product-quotient manifold. We give two different types of applications to it: to the construction of Calabi-Yau threefolds and to the determination of the minimal model of a product-quotient surface of general type.

New surfaces with canonical map of high degree

We give an algorithm that, for a given value of the geometric genus $p_g,$ computes all regular product-quotient surfaces with abelian group that have at most canonical singularities and have canonical system with at most isolated base points. We use it to show that there are exactly two families of such surfaces with canonical map of degree $32$. We also construct a surface with $q=1$ and canonical map of degree $24$. These are regular surfaces with $p_g=3$ and base point free canonical system. We discuss the case of regular surfaces with $p_g=4$ and base point free canonical system.

Mixed Threefolds Isogenous to a Product

In this paper we study \emph{threefolds isogenous to a product of mixed type} i.e. quotients of a product of three compact Riemann surfaces $C_i$ of genus at least two by the action of a finite group $G$, which is free, but not diagonal. In particular, we are interested in the systematic construction and classification of these varieties. Our main result is the full classification of threefolds isogenous to a product of mixed type with $\chi(\mathcal O_X)=-1$ assuming that any automorphism in $G$, which restricts to the trivial element in $Aut(C_i)$ for some $C_i$, is the identity on the product. Since the holomorphic Euler-Poincar\'e-characteristic of a smooth threefold of general type with ample canonical class is always negative, these examples lie on the boundary, in the sense of threefold geography. To achieve our result we use techniques from computational group theory. Indeed, we develop a MAGMA algorithm to classify these threefolds for any given value of $\chi(\mathcal O_X)$.

On Threefolds Isogenous to a Product of Curves

A threefold isogenous to a product of curves $X$ is a quotient of a product of three compact Riemann surfaces of genus at least two by the free action of a finite group. In this paper we study these threefolds under the assumption that the group acts diagonally on the product. We show that the classification of these threefolds is a finite problem, present an algorithm to classify them for a fixed value of $\chi(\mathcal O_X)$ and explain a method to determine their Hodge numbers. Running an implementation of the algorithm we achieve the full classification of threefolds isogenous to a product of curves with $\chi(\mathcal O_X)=-1$, under the assumption that the group acts faithfully on each factor.

The Classification of Regular Surfaces Isogenous to a Product of Curves with $χ(\mathcal O_S) = 2$

A complex surface $S$ is said to be isogenous to a product if $S$ is a quotient $S=(C_1 \times C_2)/G$ where the $C_i$'s are curves of genus at least two, and $G$ is a finite group acting freely on $C_1 \times C_2$. In this paper we classify all regular surfaces isogenous to a product with $χ(\mathcal O_S) = 2$ under the assumption that the action of $G$ is unmixed i.e. no element of $G$ exchange the factors of the product $C_1 \times C_2$.
