Melding Wildlife Surveys to Improve Conservation Inference

Integrated models are a popular tool for analyzing species of conservation concern. Species of conservation concern are often monitored by multiple entities that generate several datasets. Individually, these datasets may be insufficient for guiding management due to low spatio-temporal resolution, biased sampling, or large observational uncertainty. Integrated models provide an approach for assimilating multiple datasets in a coherent framework that can compensate for these deficiencies. While conventional integrated models have been used to assimilate count data with surveys of survival, fecundity, and harvest, they can also assimilate ecological surveys that have differing spatio-temporal regions and observational uncertainties. Motivated by independent aerial and ground surveys of lesser prairie-chicken, we developed an integrated modeling approach that assimilates density estimates derived from surveys with distinct sources of observational error into a joint framework that provides shared inference on spatio-temporal trends. We model these data using a Bayesian Markov melding approach and apply several data augmentation strategies for efficient sampling. In a simulation study, we show that our integrated model improved predictive performance relative to models that analyzed the surveys independently. We use the integrated model to facilitate prediction of lesser prairie-chicken density at unsampled regions and perform a sensitivity analysis to quantify the inferential cost associated with reduced survey effort.

Fermionic boundary conditions and the finite temperature transition of QCD

Finite temperature lattice QCD is probed by varying the temporal boundary conditions of the fermions. We develop the emerging physical behavior in a study of the quenched case and subsequently present first results for a fully dynamical calculation comparing ensembles below and above the phase transition. We show that for low temperature spectral quantities of the Dirac operator are insensitive to boundary conditions, while in the deconfined phase a non-trivial response to a variation of the boundary conditions sets in.

Low and high spin mesons from $N_f=2$ Clover-Wilson lattices

We present results for excited meson spectra from $N_f=2$ clover-Wilson configurations provided by the CP-PACS Collaboration. In our study we investigate both low and high spin mesons. For spin-0 and spin-1 mesons, we are especially interested in the excited states. To access these states we construct several different interpolators from quark sources of different spatial smearings and calculate a matrix of correlators. For this matrix we then solve a generalized eigenvalue problem. For spin-2 and spin-3, we extract only the lowest lying states.

Excitations of single-beauty hadrons

In this work we study the predominantly orbital and radial excitations of hadrons containing a single heavy quark. We present meson and baryon mass splittings and ratios of meson decay constants (e.g., $f_{B_s}/f_B$ and $f_{B_s'}/f_{B_s}$) resulting from quenched and dynamical two-flavor configurations. Light quarks are simulated using the chirally improved (CI) lattice Dirac operator at valence masses as light as $M_π\approx 350$ MeV. The heavy quark is approximated by a static propagator, appropriate for the $b$ quark on our lattices ($1/a \sim 1-2$ GeV). We also include some preliminary calculations of the $O(1/m_Q^{})$ kinetic corrections to the states, showing, in the process, a viable way of applying the variational method to three-point functions involving excited states. We compare our results with recent experimental findings.

Dressed Polyakov loops and center symmetry from Dirac spectra

We construct a novel observable for finite temperature QCD that relates confinement and chiral symmetry. It uses phases as boundary conditions for the fermions. We discuss numerical and analytical aspects of this observable, like its spectral behavior below and above the critical temperature, as well as the connection to chiral condensate and center symmetry.

Hadron Spectroscopy with Dynamical Chirally Improved Fermions

We simulate two dynamical, mass degenerate light quarks on 16^3x32 lattices with a spatial extent of 2.4 fm using the Chirally Improved Dirac operator. The simulation method, the implementation of the action and signals of equilibration are discussed in detail. Based on the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator we discuss some qualitative features of our approach. Results for ground state masses of pseudoscalar and vector mesons as well as for the nucleon and delta baryons are presented.

Dual condensate, dressed Polyakov loops and center symmetry from Dirac spectra

We construct a novel observable for finite temperature QCD that relates confinement and chiral symmetry. It uses phases as boundary conditions for the fermions. We discuss numerical and analytical aspects of this observable, like its spectral behavior below and above the critical temperature, as well as the connection to chiral condensate, center symmetry and the canonical ensemble.

Heavy-light hadrons and their excitations

We study the excitations of hadrons containing a single heavy quark. We present meson and baryon mass splittings and ratios of meson decay constants resulting from quenched and dynamical two-flavor configurations. Light quarks are simulated using the Chirally Improved (CI) lattice Dirac operator. The heavy quark is approximated by a static propagator, appropriate for the $b$ quark on our lattices ($1/a \sim 1-2$ GeV). We also include some preliminary calculations of the heavy-quark kinetic corrections to the states.

Dual quark condensate and dressed Polyakov loops

We construct a new order parameter for finite temperature QCD by considering the quark condensate for U(1)-valued temporal boundary conditions for the fermions. Fourier transformation with respect to the boundary condition defines the dual condensate. This quantity corresponds to an equivalence class of Polyakov loops, thereby being an order parameter for the center symmetry. We explore the duality relation between the quark condensate and these dressed Polyakov loops numerically, using quenched lattice QCD configurations below and above the QCD phase transition. It is demonstrated that the Dirac spectrum responds differently to changing the boundary condition, in a manner that reproduces the expected Polyakov loop pattern. We find the dressed Polyakov loops to be dominated by the lowest Dirac modes, in contrast to thin Polyakov loops investigated earlier.

Thin and dressed Polyakov loops from spectral sums of lattice differential operators

We represent thin and dressed Polyakov loops as spectral sums of eigenvalues of differential operators on the lattice. For that purpose we calculate complete sets of eigenvalues of the staggered Dirac and the covariant Laplace operator for several temporal boundary conditions. The spectra from different boundary conditions can be combined such that they represent single (thin) Polyakov loops, or a collection of loops (dressed Polyakov loops). We analyze the role of the eigenvalues in the spectral sums below and above the critical temperature.

Excited mesons on dynamical clover-Wilson lattices

We present results for masses of excited mesons from dynamical clover-Wilson lattices provided by the CP-PACS collaboration at pion masses down to 500 MeV. Our analysis of the data is based on using a matrix of correlators from various source and sink operators. The spectroscopy results are discussed and compared to experimental values.

Complete spectra of the Dirac operator and their relation to confinement

We compute complete spectra of the staggered lattice Dirac operator for quenched SU(3) gauge configurations below and above the critical temperature. The confined and the deconfined phase are characterized by a different response of the Dirac eigenvalues to a change of the fermionic boundary conditions. We analyze the role of the eigenvalues in recently developed spectral sums representing the Polyakov loop. We show that the Polyakov loop gets its main contributions from the UV end of the spectrum.

Domain decomposition improvement of quark propagator estimation

Applying domain decomposition to the lattice Dirac operator and the associated quark propagator, we arrive at expressions which, with the proper insertion of random sources therein, can provide improvement to the estimation of the propagator. Schemes are presented for both open and closed (or loop) propagators. In the end, our technique for improving open contributions is similar to the ``maximal variance reduction'' approach of Michael and Peisa, but contains the advantage, especially for improved actions, of dealing directly with the Dirac operator. Using these improved open propagators for the Chirally Improved operator, we present preliminary results for the static-light meson spectrum. The improvement of closed propagators is modest: on some configurations there are signs of significant noise reduction of disconnected correlators; on others, the improvement amounts to a smoothening of the same correlators.

Excited mesons from $N_f=2$ dynamical Clover Wilson lattices

We study mesons on the lattice with a special focus on excited states. For that purpose we construct several quark sources with different spatial smearings, including p-waves. These quark sources are then combined with the appropiate Dirac structures to form meson interpolators of definite spin. We use these operators to construct a cross correlation matrix from which we extract ground and excited meson states using the variational method. For the calculations we use gauge configurations with $N_f=2$ dynamical Clover Wilson fermions provided by the CP-PACS collaboration. We show preliminary results for pseudoscalar, scalar, vector and pseudovector mesons.

Improvement of quark propagator estimation through domain decomposition

Applying domain decomposition to the lattice Dirac operator and the associated quark propagator, we arrive at expressions which, with the proper insertion of random sources therein, can provide improvement to the estimation of the propagator. Schemes are considered for both open and closed (or loop) propagators.

Search for the Theta^+(1540) in lattice QCD

We report on a study of the pentaquark Theta^+(1540), using a variety of different interpolating fields. We use Chirally Improved fermions in combination with Jacobi smeared quark sources to improve the signal and get reliable results even for small quark masses. The results of our quenched calculations, which have been done on a 12^3 x 24 lattice with a lattice spacing of a = 0.148 fm, do not provide any evidence for the existence of a Θ^+ with positive parity. We do observe, however, a signal compatible with nucleon-kaon scattering state. For the negative parity the results are inconclusive, due to the potential mixture with nucleon-kaon and N^*-kaon scattering states.

Excited hadrons on the lattice: Mesons

We present results for masses of excited mesons from quenched calculations using chirally improved quarks at pion masses down to 350 MeV. The key features of our analysis are the use of a matrix of correlators from various source and sink operators and a basis which includes quark sources with different spatial widths, thereby improving overlap with states exhibiting radial excitations.

Excited hadrons on the lattice: Baryons

We present results for masses of excited baryons from a quenched calculation with Chirally Improved quarks at pion masses down to 350 MeV. Our analysis of the correlators is based on the variational method. In order to provide a large basis set for spanning the physical states, we use interpolators with different Dirac structures and Jacobi smeared quark sources of different width. Our spectroscopy results for a wide range of ground state and excited baryons are discussed.
