A simple derivation of the zero-temperature BCS functional from the reduced BCS Hamiltonian

We consider a grand-canonical reduced BCS Hamiltonian on the full fermionic Fock space with an attractive pairing interaction supported in an energy shell around the Fermi surface. For fixed chemical potential, we prove that the exact finite-volume ground-state energy differs from the minimum of the corresponding finite-volume BCS functional by a volume-independent error. As a consequence, the BCS variational principle is exact for the ground-state energy density in the thermodynamic limit.

From Bogoliubov-de Gennes to Ginzburg-Landau: Critical Points Near $T_{\rm c}$ in the Non-Magnetic Case

We study the relation between the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equation and the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation for a BCS model without external fields. While previous rigorous derivations of GL theory from BCS theory have focused on energies and minimizers, here we consider arbitrary critical points in the relevant energy regime. For temperatures close to the critical temperature, we prove that every sufficiently small solution of the BdG equation admits an asymptotic factorization into a microscopic Cooper-pair profile and a macroscopic order parameter. The latter satisfies the GL equation up to an error that vanishes in the scaling limit. We also prove the opposite direction, going from a solution of the GL equation to an approximate solution of the BdG equation. Our analysis relies on a Birman-Schwinger reformulation of the BdG equation, a Lyapunov-Schmidt type reduction, and semiclassical estimates at low regularity.

The Huang--Yang formula for a two-dimensional Fermi gas: upper bound

We compute an upper bound on the ground state energy of a dilute two-dimensional Fermi gas with repulsive short-range interactions. Our bound can be viewed as the two-dimensional analogue of a formula derived by Huang and Yang in the three-dimensional case. It captures the first three terms in an asymptotic expansion for small $\varrho a^2$, where $\varrho$ denotes the density and $a$ the scattering length of the interaction potential.

The Correlation Energy of the Electron Gas in the Mean-Field Regime

We prove a rigorous lower bound on the correlation energy of interacting fermions in the mean-field regime for a wide class of singular interactions, including the Coulomb potential. Combined with the upper bound obtained in \cite{ChrHaiNam-23b}, our result establishes an analogue of the Gell-Mann--Brueckner formula $c_{1}ρ\log\left(ρ\right)+c_{2}ρ$ for the correlation energy of the electron gas in the high-density limit. Moreover, our analysis allows us to go beyond mean-field scaling while still covering the same class of potentials.

The Huang-Yang formula for the low-density Fermi gas: upper bound

We study the ground state energy of a gas of spin $1/2$ fermions with repulsive short-range interactions. We derive an upper bound that agrees, at low density $ρ$, with the Huang-Yang conjecture. The latter captures the first three terms in an asymptotic low-density expansion, and in particular the Huang-Yang correction term of order $ρ^{7/3}$. Our trial state is constructed using an adaptation of the bosonic Bogoliubov theory to the Fermi system, where the correlation structure of fermionic particles is incorporated by quasi-bosonic Bogoliubov transformations. In the latter, it is important to consider a modified zero-energy scattering equation that takes into account the presence of the Fermi sea, in the spirit of the Bethe-Goldstone equation.

The Huang-Yang conjecture for the low-density Fermi gas

Our work establishes a three-term asymptotic expansion of the ground state energy of a dilute gas of spin $1/2$ fermions with repulsive short-range interactions, validating a formula predicted by Huang and Yang in 1957. The formula is universal in the sense that it holds for a large class of interaction potentials and depends on those only via their scattering length. We have recently proved an upper bound on the ground state energy of the desired form, and the present work completes the program by proving the matching lower bound.

Upper Bound for the Free Energy of Dilute Bose Gases at Low Temperature

We consider a Bose gas at density $ρ> 0$, interacting through a repulsive potential $V \in L^2 (\mathbb{R}^3)$ with scattering length $\mathfrak{a} > 0$. We prove an upper bound for the free energy of the system, valid at low temperature $T \lesssim ρ\mathfrak{a}$. Combined with the recent lower bound obtained in \cite{HabHaiNamSeiTri-23}, our estimate resolves the free energy per unit volume up to and including the Lee--Huang--Yang order $\mathfrak{a} ρ^2 (ρ\mathfrak{a}^3)^{1/2}$.

The free energy of dilute Bose gases at low temperatures

We consider a low density Bose gas interacting through a repulsive potential in the thermodynamic limit. We justify, as a rigorous lower bound, a Lee--Huang--Yang type formula for the free energy at suitably low temperatures, where the modified excitation spectrum leads to a second order correction of the same order as the Lee--Huang--Yang correction to the ground state energy.

The Random Phase Approximation for Interacting Fermi Gases in the Mean-Field Regime

We present a general approach to justify the random phase approximation for the homogeneous Fermi gas in three dimensions in the mean-field scaling regime. We consider a system of $N$ fermions on a torus, interacting via a two-body repulsive potential proportional to $N^{-\frac{1}{3}}$. In the limit $N\to\infty$, we derive the exact leading order of the correlation energy and the bosonic elementary excitations of the system, which are consistent with the prediction of the random phase approximation in the physics literature.

Boundary Superconductivity in the BCS Model

We consider the linear BCS equation, determining the BCS critical temperature, in the presence of a boundary, where Dirichlet boundary conditions are imposed. In the one-dimensional case with point interactions, we prove that the critical temperature is strictly larger than the bulk value, at least at weak coupling. In particular, the Cooper-pair wave function localizes near the boundary, an effect that cannot be modeled by effective Neumann boundary conditions on the order parameter as often imposed in Ginzburg-Landau theory. We also show that the relative shift in critical temperature vanishes if the coupling constant either goes to zero or to infinity.

Microscopic Derivation of Ginzburg-Landau Theory and the BCS Critical Temperature Shift in General External Fields

We consider the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) free energy functional with weak and macroscopic external electric and magnetic fields and derive the Ginzburg-Landau functional. We also provide an asymptotic formula for the BCS critical temperature as a function of the external fields. This extends our previous results in arXiv:2105.05623 for the constant magnetic field to general magnetic fields with a nonzero magnetic flux through the unit cell.

The Gell-Mann$-$Brueckner Formula for the Correlation Energy of the Electron Gas: A Rigorous Upper Bound in the Mean-Field Regime

We prove a rigorous upper bound on the correlation energy of interacting fermions in the mean-field regime for a wide class of interaction potentials. Our result covers the Coulomb potential, and in this case we obtain the analogue of the Gell-Mann$-$Brueckner formula $c_{1}ρ\log\left(ρ\right)+c_{2}ρ$ in the high density limit. We do this by refining the analysis of our bosonization method to deal with singular potentials, and to capture the exchange contribution which is absent in the purely bosonic picture.

Microscopic Derivation of Ginzburg-Landau Theory and the BCS Critical Temperature Shift in a Weak Homogeneous Magnetic Field

Starting from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) free energy functional, we derive the Ginzburg-Landau functional in the presence of a weak homogeneous magnetic field. We also provide an asymptotic formula for the BCS critical temperature as a function of the magnetic field. This extends the previous works arXiv:1102.4001 and arXiv:1410.2352 of Frank, Hainzl, Seiringer and Solovej to the case of external magnetic fields with non-vanishing magnetic flux through the unit cell.

Bogoliubov Theory in the Gross-Pitaevskii Limit: a Simplified Approach

We show that Bogoliubov theory correctly predicts the low-energy spectral properties of Bose gases in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime. We recover recent results from \cite{BBCS,BBCS4}. While our main strategy is similar to the one developed in \cite{BBCS,BBCS4}, we combine it with new ideas, taken in part from \cite{Hainzl,NT}; this makes our proof substantially simpler and shorter. As an important step towards the proof of Bogoliubov theory, we show that low-energy states exhibit complete Bose-Einstein condensation with optimal control on the number of orthogonal excitations.

Another proof of BEC in the GP-limit

We present a fresh look at the methods introduced by Boccato, Brennecke, Cenatiempo, and Schlein concerning the trapped Bose gas and give a conceptually very simple and concise proof of BEC in the Gross-Pitaevskii limit for small interaction potentials.

Enhanced pairing mechanism in Cuprate-type crystals

Using a BCS mean-field approach, we show how the interplay between low-momentum optical phonons and Jahn-Teller-type lattice distortions can open an attractive channel that allows the formation of pairs with the corresponding density exhibiting characteristic features of a pair-density wave (PDW). We demonstrate this numerically on a copper-oxide type lattice.

Obstructions to odd-frequency superconductivity in Eliashberg theory

We present a necessary condition for odd-frequency (odd-f) superconductivity (SC) to occur in a large class of materials described by Eliashberg theory. We use this condition to prove a no-go theorem ruling out the occurrence of odd-f SC in standard one-band superconductors with pairing interactions mediated by phonon exchange. We also present a corresponding no-go theorem for superconductors with interactions mediated by spin-fluctuations. Our results explain why odd-f SC is rare in conventional materials, and they open up the possibility for a search for materials with interactions designed so as to allow for odd-f SC.
