Combined resistivity and Hall effect study on NaFe$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$As single crystals

Electrical transport measurements are used to study the Rh-doped NaFeAs superconductor series with a focus on the tetragonal phase. The resistivity curvature has an anomalous temperature dependence evidencing in the phase diagram two crossover regions of changes in the scattering rate, the effective mass as well as of the charge carrier density. The first crossover region is directly connected to the structural transition and resembles the onset of resistivity anisotropy. The second crossover region can as well be deduced from the temperature dependent Hall coefficient. A comparison to literature NMR data suggests this region to be connected with nematic fluctuations far above the tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition.

Suppression of the impurity-induced local magnetism by the opening of a spin pseudogap in Ni-doped Sr$_2$CuO$_3$

The $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain compound Sr$_2$CuO$_3$ doped with $1 \%$ and $2 \%$ of Ni impurities has been studied by means of $^{63}$Cu nuclear magnetic resonance. A strong decrease of the spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ at low temperatures points toward a spin gap, while a stretching exponent $λ< 1$ and a frequency dependence of $T_1^{-1}$ indicate that this spin gap varies spatially and should rather be characterized as a spin pseudogap. The magnitude of the spin pseudogap scales with doping level. Our results therefore evidence the finite-size character of this phenomenon. Moreover, an unusual narrowing of the low temperature NMR lines reveals the suppression of the impurity-induced staggered paramagnetic response with increasing doping level.

Pseudospin heat conductivity in the $J_\mathrm{eff} = 1/2$ antiferromagnet Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

We report the in-plane and out-of-plane heat conductivity of the antiferromagnetic spin-orbit induced Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ with $J_\mathrm{eff} = 1/2$. Our data reveal clear-cut evidence for magnetic heat transport within the IrO$_2$ planes which provides the unique possibility to analyze the thermal occupation and scattering of $J_\mathrm{eff} = 1/2$ pseudospin excitations. The analysis of the magnetic heat conductivity yields a low-temperature ($T \lesssim 75$ K) magnetic mean free path $l_\mathrm{mag} \sim 32$ nm, consistent with boundary scattering. Upon heating towards room temperature, the mean free path strongly decreases by one order of magnitude due to thermally activated scattering of the pseudospin excitations. The latter reveals that the coupling of these excitations to the lattice is radically different from that of $S = 1/2$-excitations in cuprate analogs.

Crystal growth and the electronic phase diagram of the 4$d$ doped Na$_{1-δ}$Fe$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$As in comparison with 3$d$ doped Na$_{1-δ}$Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As

Single crystals of Na$_{1-δ}$Fe$_{1-x}$T$_x$As with T = Co, Rh have been grown using a self-flux technique. The crystals were thoroughly characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and electronic transport with particular focus on the Rh-doped samples. Measurements of the specific heat and ARPES were conducted exemplarily for the optimally doped compositions. The spin-density wave transition (SDW) observed for samples with low Rh concentration ($0\,\leq\,x\,\leq\,0.013$) is fully suppressed in the optimally doped sample. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) is enhanced from $10$~K in Na$_{1-δ}$FeAs to $21$~K in the optimally doped sample ($x$ = 0.019) of the Na$_{1-δ}$Fe$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$As series and decreases for the overdoped compounds, revealing a typical shape for the superconducting part of the electronic phase diagram. Remarkably, the phase diagram is almost identical to that of Co-doped Na$_{1-δ}$FeAs, suggesting a generic phase diagram for both dopants.

Spin density wave order and fluctuations in Mn3Si: a transport study

We present a comprehensive transport investigation of the itinerant antiferromagnet Mn3Si which undergoes a spin density wave (SDW) order below T_N~21.3K. The electrical resistivity, the Hall-, Seebeck and Nernst effects exhibit pronounced anomalies at the SDW transition, while the heat conductivity is phonon dominated and therefore is insensitive to the intrinsic electronic ordering in this compound. At temperatures higher than T_N our data provide strong evidence for a large fluctuation regime which extends up to ~200K in the resistivity, the Seebeck effect and the Nernst effect. From the comparison of our results with other prototype SDW materials, viz. LaFeAsO and Chromium, we conclude that many of the observed features are of generic character.

Interband Quasiparticle Scattering in Superconducting LiFeAs Reconciles Photoemission and Tunneling Measurements

Several angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies reveal a poorly nested Fermi surface of LiFeAs, far away from a spin density wave instability, and clear-cut superconducting gap anisotropies. On the other hand a very different, more nested Fermi surface and dissimilar gap anisotropies have been obtained from quasiparticle interference (QPI) data, which were interpreted as arising from intraband scattering within hole-like bands. Here we show that this ARPES-QPI paradox is completely resolved by interband scattering between the hole-like bands. The resolution follows from an excellent agreement between experimental quasiparticle scattering data and T-matrix QPI calculations (based on experimental band structure data), which allows disentangling interband and intraband scattering processes.

Half-Metallic Ferromagnetism in the Heusler Compound Co$_2$FeSi revealed by Resistivity, Magnetoresistance, and Anomalous Hall Effect measurements

We present electrical transport data for single-crystalline Co$_2$FeSi which provide clear-cut evidence that this Heusler compound is truly a half-metallic ferromagnet, i.e. it possesses perfect spin-polarization. More specifically, the temperature dependence of $ρ$ is governed by electron scattering off magnons which are thermally excited over a sizeable gap $Δ\approx 100 K$ ($\sim 9 meV$) separating the electronic majority states at the Fermi level from the unoccupied minority states. As a consequence, electron-magnon scattering is only relevant at $T\gtrsimΔ$ but freezes out at lower temperatures, i.e., the spin-polarization of the electrons at the Fermi level remains practically perfect for $T\lesssimΔ$. The gapped magnon population has a decisive influence on the magnetoresistance and the anomalous Hall effect (AHE): i) The magnetoresistance changes its sign at $T\sim 100 K$, ii) the anomalous Hall coefficient is strongly temperature dependent at $T\gtrsim 100 K$ and compatible with Berry phase related and/or side-jump electronic deflection, whereas it is practically temperature-independent at lower temperatures.

Nernst effect of iron pnictide and cuprate superconductors: signatures of spin density wave and stripe order

The Nernst effect has recently proven a sensitive probe for detecting unusual normal state properties of unconventional superconductors. In particular, it may sensitively detect Fermi surface reconstructions which are connected to a charge or spin density wave (SDW) ordered state, and even fluctuating forms of such a state. Here we summarize recent results for the Nernst effect of the iron pnictide superconductor $\rm LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$, whose ground state evolves upon doping from an itinerant SDW to a superconducting state, and the cuprate superconductor $\rm La_{1.8-x}Eu_{0.2}Sr_xCuO_4$ which exhibits static stripe order as a ground state competing with the superconductivity. In $\rm LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$, the SDW order leads to a huge Nernst response, which allows to detect even fluctuating SDW precursors at superconducting doping levels where long range SDW order is suppressed. This is in contrast to the impact of stripe order on the normal state Nernst effect in $\rm La_{1.8-x}Eu_{0.2}Sr_xCuO_4$. Here, though signatures of the stripe order are detectable in the temperature dependence of the Nernst coefficient, its overall temperature dependence is very similar to that of $\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$, where stripe order is absent. The anomalies which are induced by the stripe order are very subtle and the enhancement of the Nernst response due to static stripe order in $\rm La_{1.8-x}Eu_{0.2}Sr_xCuO_4$ as compared to that of the pseudogap phase in $\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$, if any, is very small.

Plasmons and Interband Transitions of Ca$_{11}$Sr$_3$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ investigated by Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy studies have been performed in order to get a deeper insight into the electronic structure and elementary excitations of the two-leg ladder system Ca$_{11}$Sr$_3$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$. We find a strong anisotropy of the loss function for momentum transfers along the a and c-crystallographic axis, and a remarkable linear plasmon dispersion for a momentum transfer parallel to the legs of the ladders. The investigated spectral features are attributed to localized and delocalized charge-transfer excitations and the charge carrier plasmon. The charge carrier plasmon position and dispersion in the long wave-length limit agree well with expectations based upon the band structure of the two-leg ladder, while the observed quasi-linear plasmon dispersion might be related to the peculiar properties of underdoped cuprates in general.

Magnetodielectric and magnetoelastic coupling in TbFe3(BO3)4

We have studied the magnetodielectric and magnetoelastic coupling in TbFe3(BO3)4 single crystals by means of capacitance, magnetostriction and Raman spectroscopy measurements. The data reveal strong magnetic field effects on the dielectric constant and on the macroscopic sample length which are associated to long range magnetic ordering and a field-driven metamagnetic transition. We discuss the coupling of the dielectric, structural, and magnetic order parameters and attribute the origin of the magnetodielectric coupling to phonon mode shifts according to the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller (LST) relation.

Nernst Effect of stripe ordering La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$

We investigate the transport properties of La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x=0.04$, 0.08, 0.125, 0.15, 0.2) with a special focus on the Nernst effect in the normal state. Various anomalous features are present in the data. For $x=0.125$ and 0.15 a kink-like anomaly is present in the vicinity of the onset of charge stripe order in the LTT phase, suggestive of enhanced positive quasiparticle Nernst response in the stripe ordered phase. At higher temperature, all doping levels except $x=0.2$ exhibit a further kink anomaly in the LTO phase which cannot unambiguously be related to stripe order. Moreover, a direct comparison between the Nernst coefficients of stripe ordering La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and superconducting La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ at the doping levels $x=0.125$ and $x=0.15$ reveals only weak differences. Our findings make high demands on any scenario interpreting the Nernst response in hole-doped cuprates.

Unusual Nernst effect and spin density wave precursors in superconducting $\rm\bf LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_x$

The Nernst effect has recently proven as a sensitive probe for detecting unusual normal state properties of unconventional superconductors. Here we present a systematic study of the Nernst effect of the iron pnictide superconductor \laf with a particular focus on its evolution upon doping. For the parent compound we observe a huge negative Nernst coefficient accompanied with a severe violation of the Sondheimer cancellation in the spin density wave (SDW) ordered state. Surprisingly, an unusual and enhanced Nernst signal is also found at underdoping ($x=0.05$) despite the presence of bulk superconductivity and the absence of static magnetic order, strongly suggestive of SDW precursors at $T\lesssim150$ K. A more conventional normal state Nernst response is observed at optimal doping ($x=0.1$) where it is rather featureless with a more complete Sondheimer cancellation.

Synthesis and physical properties of $\rm\bf LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$

We have prepared the newly discovered Fe-based superconducting material $\rm LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$ ($0\leq x\leq 0.2$) in polycrystalline form and have investigated the samples by means of structural, thermodynamic and transport measurements. Our investigations reveal a non superconducting phase at $0\leq x\lesssim0.04$ which for $x=0$ is characterized by a structural transition towards an orthorhombic distortion at $T_s\approx 160$ K and antiferromagnetic spin order at $T_N\approx138$ K. Both transitions lead to strong anomalies in various transport properties as well as in magnetization and in specific heat. Remarkably, the transition temperatures are only weakly doping dependent up $x\lesssim 0.04$. However, the transitions are abruptly suppressed at $x\geq0.05$ in favour of a superconducting phase with a critical temperature $T_c\gtrsim 20$ K. Upon further increasing the F-doping $T_c$ increases up to a maximum of $T_c=26.8$ K at $x=0.1$ which is followed by a decrease down to $T_c\approx10$ K at $x\geq0.15$.

First Scanning Tunnelling Spectroscopy on Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (Bi2223) single crystals

We report the first low temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy study of high quality Bi2223 crystals. We present atomic resolution and show spectroscopic data acquired on two different samples. In one case, for Tc= 109K and a transition width of only 1K, we obtained an extremely homogeneous sample with a gap value of 60 meV over at least 50 nm. In the other case, the respective parameters were Tc= 111K with a transition width of 1.7K and yielded a slightly less homogeneous sample with a gap of 45 meV. We evidence strong similarities with Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) and discuss the doping level of our samples.
