On the validity of Chapman-Enskog expansions for shock waves with small strength

We justify a Chapman-Enskog expansion for discontinuous solutions of hyperbolic conservation laws containing shock waves with small strength. Precisely, we establish pointwise uniform estimates for the difference between the traveling waves of a relaxation model and the traveling waves of the corresponding diffusive equations determined by a Chapman-Enskog expansion procedure to first- or second-order.

Numerical comparison of Riemann solvers for astrophysical hydrodynamics

The idea of this work is to compare a new positive and entropy stable approximate Riemann solver by Francois Bouchut with a state-of the-art algorithm for astrophysical fluid dynamics. We implemented the new Riemann solver into an astrophysical PPM-code, the Prometheus code, and also made a version with a different, more theoretically grounded higher order algorithm than PPM. We present shock tube tests, two-dimensional instability tests and forced turbulence simulations in three dimensions. We find subtle differences between the codes in the shock tube tests, and in the statistics of the turbulence simulations. The new Riemann solver increases the computational speed without significant loss of accuracy.

Hyperbolic Conservation Laws and Hydrodynamic Limit for Particle Systems

We study the following class of scalar hyperbolic conservation laws with discontinuous fluxes: \partial_tρ+\partial_xF(x,ρ)=0. The main feature of such a conservation law is the discontinuity of the flux function in the space variable x. Kruzkov's approach for the L1-contraction does not apply since it requires the Lipschitz continuity of the flux function; and entropy solutions even for the Riemann problem are not unique under the classical entropy conditions. On the other hand, it is known that, in statistical mechanics, some microscopic interacting particle systems with discontinuous speed parameter lambda(x), in the hydrodynamic limit, formally lead to scalar hyperbolic conservation laws with discontinuous fluxes of the form: \partial_tρ+\partial_x(λ(x)h(ρ))=0. The natural question arises which entropy solutions the hydrodynamic limit selects, thereby leading to a suitable, physical relevant notion of entropy solutions of this class of conservation laws. This paper is a first step and provides an answer to this question for a family of discontinuous flux functions. In particular, we identify the entropy condition for our PDE and proceed to show the well-posedness by combining our existence result with a uniqueness result of Audusse-Perthame (2005) for the family of flux functions; we establish a compactness framework for the hydrodynamic limit of large particle systems and the convergence of other approximate solutions to our PDE, which is based on the notion and reduction of measure-valued entropy solutions; and we finally establish the hydrodynamic limit for a ZRP with discontinuous speed-parameter governed by an entropy solution to our PDE.

A rigorous derivation of Smoluchowski's equation in the moderate limit

Smoluchowski's equation is a macroscopic description of a many particle system with coagulation and shattering interactions. We give a microscopic model of the system from which we derive this equation rigorously. Provided the existence of a unique and sufficiently regular solution of Smoluchowski's equation, we prove the law of large numbers for the empirical processes. In contrast to previous derivations we assume a moderate scaling of the particle interaction, enabling us to estimate the critical fluctuation terms by using martingale inequalities. This approach can be justified in the regime of high temperatures and particle densities, which is of special interest in astrophysical studies and where previous derivations do not apply.
