Equivariant Quantum Cohomology of Grassmannians via the Clifford algebra

We construct an explicit equivariant quantum Satake map for Grassmannians, which enables us to express their torus-equivariant quantum cohomology in terms of that of projective space. We then consider the exterior algebra of the latter, which admits a canonical identification with a Clifford algebra. We describe the resulting action in several complementary ways: first, from a geometric perspective via push-pull maps, and second, in terms of the shuffle product, which also arises in the simplest cohomological Hall algebra associated with the $A_1$-quiver. Exploiting the Clifford algebra structure, we derive new recurrence relations among equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants, yielding a new method for their computation in terms of Wick's Theorem. As an application, we provide combinatorial proofs of Graham positivity for both equivariant quantum Pieri rules, and in one case extend these results to quantum triple Schubert calculus.

Ind-cluster algebras and infinite Grassmannians

A prototypical examples of a cluster algebra is the coordinate ring of a finite Grassmannian: using the Pl\"ucker embedding the cluster algebra structure allows one to move between `maximal sets' of algebraically independent Pl\"ucker coordinates via mutations. Fioresi and Hacon studied a specific colimit of the coordinate rings of finite Grassmannians and its link with the infinite Grassmannian introduced by Sato and independently by Segal and Wilson in connection with the Kadomtsev-Petiashvili (KP) hierarchy, an infinite set of nonlinear partial differential equations which possess soliton solutions. In this article we prove that this ring is a cluster algebra of infinite rank with the structure induced by the colimit construction. More generally, we prove that cluster algebras of infinite rank are precisely the ind-objects of a natural category of cluster algebras.

Quantum K--theory of Grassmannians from a Yang-Baxter algebra

In an earlier paper, two of the authors defined a $5$-vertex Yang-Baxter algebra (a Hopf algebra) which acts on the sum of the equivariant quantum K-rings of Grassmannians $\mathrm{Gr}(k;n)$, where $k$ varies from $0$ to $n$. We construct geometrically defined operators on quantum K-rings describing this action. In particular, the $R$-matrix defining the Yang-Baxter algebra corresponds to the left Weyl group action. Most importantly, we use the `quantum=classical' statement for the quantum K-theory of Grassmannians to prove an explicit geometric interpretation of the action of generators of the Yang-Baxter algebra. The diagonal entries of the monodromy matrix are given by quantum K-multiplications by explicitly defined classes, and the off-diagonal entries by certain push-pull convolutions. We use this to find a quantization of the classes of fixed points in the quantum K-rings, corresponding to the Bethe vectors of the Yang-Baxter algebra. On each of the quantum K-rings, we prove that the two Frobenius structures (one from geometry, and the other from the integrable system construction) coincide. We discuss several applications, including an action of the extended affine Weyl group on the quantum K-theory ring (extending the Seidel action), a quantum version of the localization map (which is a ring homomorphism with respect to the quantum K-product), and a graphical calculus to multiply by Hirzebruch $\lambda_y$ classes of the dual of the tautological quotient bundle. In an Appendix we illustrate our results in the case when $n=2$.

Cylindric Hecke characters and Gromov-Witten invariants via the asymmetric six-vertex model

We construct a family of infinite-dimensional positive sub-coalgebras within the Grothendieck ring of Hecke algebras, when viewed as a Hopf algebra with respect to the induction and restriction functor. These sub-coalgebras have as structure constants the 3-point genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants of Grassmannians and are spanned by what we call cylindric Hecke characters, a particular set of virtual characters for whose computation we give several explicit combinatorial formulae. One of these expressions is a generalisation of Ram's formula for irreducible Hecke characters and uses cylindric broken rim hook tableaux. We show that the latter are in bijection with so-called `ice configurations' on a cylindrical square lattice, which define the asymmetric six-vertex model in statistical mechanics. A key ingredient of our construction is an extension of the boson-fermion correspondence to Hecke algebras and employing the latter we find new expressions for Jing's vertex operators of Hall-Littlewood functions in terms of the six-vertex transfer matrices on the infinite planar lattice.

Cylindric symmetric functions and positivity

We introduce new families of cylindric symmetric functions as subcoalgebras in the ring of symmetric functions $Λ$ (viewed as a Hopf algebra) which have non-negative structure constants. Combinatorially these cylindric symmetric functions are defined as weighted sums over cylindric reverse plane partitions or - alternatively - in terms of sets of affine permutations. We relate their combinatorial definition to an algebraic construction in terms of the principal Heisenberg subalgebra of the affine Lie algebra $\mathfrak{\widehat{sl}}_n$ and a specialised cyclotomic Hecke algebra. Using Schur-Weyl duality we show that the new cylindric symmetric functions arise as matrix elements of Lie algebra elements in the subspace of symmetric tensors of a particular level-0 module which can be identified with the small quantum cohomology ring of the $k$-fold product of projective space. The analogous construction in the subspace of alternating tensors gives the known set of cylindric Schur functions which are related to the small quantum cohomology ring of Grassmannians. We prove that cylindric Schur functions form a subcoalgebra in $Λ$ whose structure constants are the 3-point genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants. We show that the new families of cylindric functions obtained from the subspace of symmetric tensors also share the structure constants of a symmetric Frobenius algebra, which we define in terms of tensor multiplicities of the generalised symmetric group $G(n,1,k)$.

Yang-Baxter algebras as convolution algebras: The Grassmannian case

We present a simple but explicit example of a recent development which connects quantum integrable models with Schubert calculus: there is a purely geometric construction of solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation and their associated Yang-Baxter algebras which play a central role in quantum integrable systems and exactly solvable lattice models in statistical physics. We consider the degenerate five-vertex limit of the asymmetric six-vertex model and identify its associated Yang-Baxter algebra as convolution algebra arising from the equivariant Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. We show how our method can be used to construct (Schur algebra type) quotients of the current algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_2[t]$ acting on the tensor product of copies of its evaluation representation $\mathbb{C}^2[t]$. Finally we connect it with the COHA for the $A_1$-quiver.

Cylindric Reverse Plane Partitions and 2D TQFT

The ring of symmetric functions carries the structure of a Hopf algebra. When computing the coproduct of complete symmetric functions $h_λ$ one arrives at weighted sums over reverse plane partitions (RPP) involving binomial coefficients. Employing the action of the extended affine symmetric group at fixed level $n$ we generalise these weighted sums to cylindric RPP and define cylindric complete symmetric functions. The latter are shown to be $h$-positive, that is, their expansions coefficients in the basis of complete symmetric functions are non-negative integers. We state an explicit formula in terms of tensor multiplicities for irreducible representations of the generalised symmetric group. Moreover, we relate the cylindric complete symmetric functions to a 2D topological quantum field theory (TQFT) that is a generalisation of the celebrated $\mathfrak{\widehat{sl}}_n$-Verlinde algebra or Wess-Zumino-Witten fusion ring, which plays a prominent role in the context of vertex operator algebras and algebraic geometry.

Quantum Integrability and Generalised Quantum Schubert Calculus

We introduce and study a new mathematical structure in the generalised (quantum) cohomology theory for Grassmannians. Namely, we relate the Schubert calculus to a quantum integrable system known in the physics literature as the asymmetric six-vertex model. Our approach offers a new perspective on already established and well-studied special cases, for example equivariant K-theory, and in addition allows us to formulate a conjecture on the so-far unknown case of quantum equivariant K-theory.

Dimers, crystals and quantum Kostka numbers

We relate the counting of honeycomb dimer configurations on the cylinder to the counting of certain vertices in Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystal graphs. We show that these dimer configurations yield the quantum Kostka numbers of the small quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian, i.e. the expansion coefficients when multiplying a Schubert class repeatedly with different Chern classes. This allows one to derive sum rules for Gromov-Witten invariants.

From Quantum Bäcklund Transforms to Topological Quantum Field Theory

We derive the quantum analogue of a Bäcklund transformation for the quantised Ablowitz-Ladik chain, a space discretisation of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The quantisation of the Ablowitz-Ladik chain leads to the $q$-boson model. Using a previous construction of Baxter's Q-operator for this model by the author, a set of functional relations is obtained which matches the relations of a one-variable classical Bäcklund transform to all orders in $\hbar $. We construct also a second Q-operator and show that it is closely related to the inverse of the first. The multi-Bäcklund transforms generated from the Q-operator define the fusion matrices of a 2D TQFT and we derive a linear system for the solution to the quantum Bäcklund relations in terms of the TQFT fusion coefficients.

Equivariant quantum cohomology and Yang-Baxter algebras

There are two intriguing statements regarding the quantum cohomology of partial flag varieties. The first one relates quantum cohomology to the affinisation of Lie algebras and the homology of the affine Grassmannian, the second one connects it with the geometry of quiver varieties. The connection with the affine Grassmannian was first discussed in unpublished work of Peterson and subsequently proved by Lam and Shimozono. The second development is based on recent works of Nekrasov, Shatashvili and of Maulik, Okounkov relating the quantum cohomology of Nakajima varieties with integrable systems and quantum groups. In this article we explore for the simplest case, the Grassmannian, the relation between the two approaches. We extend the definition of the integrable systems called vicious and osculating walkers to the equivariant setting and show that these models have simple expressions in a particular representation of the affine nil-Hecke ring. We compare this representation with the one introduced by Kostant and Kumar and later used by Peterson in his approach to Schubert calculus. We reveal an underlying quantum group structure in terms of Yang-Baxter algebras and relate them to Schur-Weyl duality. We also derive new combinatorial results for equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants such as an explicit determinant formula.

Quantum cohomology via vicious and osculating walkers

We relate the counting of rational curves intersecting Schubert varieties of the Grassmannian to the counting of certain non-intersecting lattice paths on the cylinder, so-called vicious and osculating walkers. These lattice paths form exactly solvable statistical mechanics models and are obtained from solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. The eigenvectors of the transfer matrices of these models yield the idempotents of the Verlinde algebra of the gauged u(n)-WZNW model. The latter is known to be closely related to the small quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian. We establish further that the partition functions of the vicious and osculating walker model are given in terms of Postnikov's toric Schur functions and can be interpreted as generating functions for Gromov-Witten invariants.

The su(n) WZNW fusion ring as integrable model: a new algorithm to compute fusion coefficients

This is a proceedings article reviewing a recent combinatorial construction of the su(n) WZNW fusion ring by C. Stroppel and the author. It contains one novel aspect: the explicit derivation of an algorithm for the computation of fusion coefficients different from the Kac-Walton formula. The discussion is presented from the point of view of a vertex model in statistical mechanics whose partition function generates the fusion coefficients. The statistical model can be shown to be integrable by linking its transfer matrix to a particular solution of the Yang-Baxter equation. This transfer matrix can be identified with the generating function of an (infinite) set of polynomials in a noncommutative alphabet: the generators of the local affine plactic algebra. The latter is a generalisation of the plactic algebra occurring in the context of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence. One can define analogues of Schur polynomials in this noncommutative alphabet which become identical to the fusion matrices when represented as endomorphisms over the state space of the integrable model. Crucial is the construction of an eigenbasis, the Bethe vectors, which are the idempotents of the fusion algebra.

Cylindric versions of specialised Macdonald functions and a deformed Verlinde algebra

We define cylindric generalisations of skew Macdonald functions when one of their parameters is set to zero. We define these functions as weighted sums over cylindric skew tableaux: fixing two integers n>2 and k>0 we shift an ordinary skew diagram of two partitions, viewed as a subset of the two-dimensional integer lattice, by the period vector (n,-k). Imposing a periodicity condition one defines cylindric skew tableaux as a map from the periodically continued skew diagram into the integers. The resulting cylindric Macdonald functions appear in the coproduct of a commutative Frobenius algebra, which is a particular quotient of the spherical Hecke algebra. We realise this Frobenius algebra as a commutative subalgebra in the endomorphisms over a Kirillov-Reshetikhin module of the quantum affine sl(n) algebra. Acting with special elements of this subalgebra, which are noncommutative analogues of Macdonald polynomials, on a highest weight vector, one obtains Lusztig's canonical basis. In the limit q=0, one recovers the sl(n) Verlinde algebra, i.e. the structure constants of the Frobenius algebra become the WZNW fusion coefficients which are known to be dimensions of moduli spaces of generalized theta-functions and multiplicities of tilting modules of quantum groups at roots of unity. Further motivation comes from exactly solvable lattice models in statistical mechanics: the cylindric Macdonald functions arise as partition functions of so-called vertex models obtained from solutions to the quantum Yang-Baxter equation. We show this by stating explicit bijections between cylindric tableaux and lattice configurations of non-intersecting paths. Using the algebraic Bethe ansatz the idempotents of the Frobenius algebra are computed.

Noncommutative Schur polynomials and the crystal limit of the U_q sl(2)-vertex model

Starting from the Verma module of U_q sl(2) we consider the evaluation module for affine U_q sl(2) and discuss its crystal limit (q=0). There exists an associated integrable statistical mechanics model on a square lattice defined in terms of vertex configurations. Its transfer matrix is the generating function for noncommutative complete symmetric polynomials in the generators of the affine plactic algebra, an extension of the finite plactic algebra first discussed by Lascoux and Schützenberger. The corresponding noncommutative elementary symmetric polynomials were recently shown to be generated by the transfer matrix of the so-called phase model discussed by Bogoliubov, Izergin and Kitanine. Here we establish that both generating functions satisfy Baxter's TQ-equation in the crystal limit by tying them to special U_q sl(2) solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. The TQ-equation amounts to the well-known Jacobi-Trudy formula leading naturally to the definition of noncommutative Schur polynomials. The latter can be employed to define a ring which has applications in conformal field theory and enumerative geometry: it is isomorphic to the fusion ring of the sl(n)_k -WZNW model whose structure constants are the dimensions of spaces of generalized theta-functions over the Riemann sphere with three punctures.

The sl(n)-WZNW Fusion Ring: a combinatorial construction and a realisation as quotient of quantum cohomology

A simple, combinatorial construction of the sl(n)-WZNW fusion ring, also known as Verlinde algebra, is given. As a byproduct of the construction one obtains an isomorphism between the fusion ring and a particular quotient of the small quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian Gr(k,k+n). We explain how our approach naturally fits into known combinatorial descriptions of the quantum cohomology ring, by establishing what one could call a `Boson-Fermion-correspondence' between the two rings. We also present new recursion formulae for the structure constants of both rings, the fusion coefficients and the Gromov-Witten invariants.

A Combinatorial Derivation of the Racah-Speiser Algorithm for Gromov-Witten invariants

Using a finite-dimensional Clifford algebra a new combinatorial product formula for the small quantum cohomology ring of the complex Grassmannian is presented. In particular, Gromov-Witten invariants can be expressed through certain elements in the Clifford algebra, this leads to a q-deformation of the Racah-Speiser algorithm allowing for their computation in terms of Kostka numbers. The second main result is a simple and explicit combinatorial formula for projecting product expansions in the quantum cohomology ring onto the sl(n) Verlinde algebra. This projection is non-trivial and amounts to an identity between numbers of rational curves intersecting Schubert varieties and dimensions of moduli spaces of generalised theta-functions.

PT Symmetry of the non-Hermitian XX Spin-Chain: Non-local Bulk Interaction from Complex Boundary Fields

The XX spin-chain with non-Hermitian diagonal boundary conditions is shown to be quasi-Hermitian for special values of the boundary parameters. This is proved by explicit construction of a new inner product employing a "quasi-fermion" algebra in momentum space where creation and annihilation operators are not related via Hermitian conjugation. For a special example, when the boundary fields lie on the imaginary axis, we show the spectral equivalence of the quasi-Hermitian XX spin-chain with a non-local fermion model, where long range hopping of the particles occurs as the non-Hermitian boundary fields increase in strength. The corresponding Hamiltonian interpolates between the open XX and the quantum group invariant XXZ model at the free fermion point. For an even number of sites the former is known to be related to a CFT with central charge c=1, while the latter has been connected to a logarithmic CFT with central charge c=-2. We discuss the underlying algebraic structures and show that for an odd number of sites the superalgebra symmetry U(gl(1|1)) can be extended from the unit circle along the imaginary axis. We relate the vanishing of one of its central elements to the appearance of Jordan blocks in the Hamiltonian.
