Corrigendum to "The Mori fan of the Dolgachev-Nikulin-Voisin family in genus $2$" by K. Hulek and C. Liese

In this note, we correct some of the results of the paper ``The Mori fan of the Dolgachev--Nikulin--Voisin family in genus $2$'' by K.~Hulek and C.~Liese concerning the number of maximal cones in the Mori fan of the Dolgachev--Nikulin--Voisin fan in genus $2$. The errors in the original paper concern the correct enumeration of cones. The method and the main theoretical results are not affected.

Exceptional Tannaka groups only arise from cubic threefolds

We show that under mild assumptions, the Fano surfaces of lines on smooth cubic threefolds are the only smooth subvarieties of abelian varieties whose Tannaka group for the convolution of perverse sheaves is an exceptional simple group. This in particular leads to a considerable strengthening of our previous work on the Shafarevich conjecture. A key idea is to control the Hodge decomposition on cohomology by a cocharacter of the Tannaka group of Hodge modules, and to play this off against an improvement of the Hodge number estimates for irregular varieties by Lazarsfeld-Popa and Lombardi.

Combinatorial K3 surfaces and the Mori fan of the Dolgachev--Nikulin--Voisin family in degree 2

We introduce the notion of a combinatorial K3 surface. Those form a certain class of type III semistable K3 surfaces and are completely determined by combinatorial data called curve structures. Emphasis is put on degree $2$ combinatorial K3 surfaces, but the approach can be used to study higher degree as well. We describe elementary modifications both in terms of the curve structures as well as on the Picard groups. Together with a description of the nef cone in terms of curve structures, this provides an approach to explicitly computing the Mori fan of the Dolgachev--Nikulin--Voisin family in degree $2$.

Non-hyperbolicity of holomorphic symplectic varieties

We prove non-hyperbolicity of primitive symplectic varieties with $b_2 \geq 5$ that satisfy the rational SYZ conjecture. If in addition $b_2 \geq 7$, we establish that the Kobayashi pseudometric vanishes identically. This in particular applies to all currently known examples of irreducible symplectic manifolds and thereby completes the results by Kamenova--Lu--Verbitsky. The key new contribution is that a projective primitive symplectic variety with a Lagrangian fibration has vanishing Kobayashi pseudometric. The proof uses ergodicity, birational contractions, and cycle spaces.

Nonvanishing results for Kähler varieties

Nonvanishing theorems play a central role in birational geometry, since they derive geometric consequences from numerical information and constitute a crucial step towards abundance and semiampleness problems. General nonvanishing statements remain rare, especially in the Kähler setting. We present two types of nonvanishing results for compact Kähler varieties. First, on non-uniruled varieties with nonzero Euler-Poincaré characteristic, we prove nonvanishing for adjoint bundles of numerical dimension one on Kähler klt pairs, as well as nonvanishing for nef line bundles of numerical dimension one on $K$-trivial varieties. Second, on hyperkähler manifolds we study line bundles $\mathcal L$ which are nef but not big, and establish a dichotomy: either nonvanishing holds for $\mathcal L$, or any closed positive current in the cohomology class of $\mathcal L$ has maximal Lelong components with a rather restricted geometry. We obtain much stronger abundance-type results in dimension $4$.

The monodromy of families of subvarieties on abelian varieties

Motivated by recent work of Lawrence-Venkatesh and Lawrence-Sawin, we show that non-isotrivial families of subvarieties in abelian varieties have big monodromy when twisted by generic rank one local systems. While Lawrence-Sawin discuss the case of subvarieties of codimension one, our results hold for subvarieties of codimension at least half the dimension of the ambient abelian variety. For the proof, we use a combination of geometric arguments and representation theory to show that the Tannaka groups of intersection complexes on such subvarieties are big.

The Morrison--Kawamata cone conjecture for singular symplectic varieties

We prove the Morrison--Kawamata cone conjecture for projective primitive symplectic varieties with $\Q$-factorial and terminal singularities with $b_2\geq 5$, from which we derive for instance the finiteness of minimal models of such varieties, up to isomorphisms. To prove the conjecture we establish along the way some results on the monodromy group which may be interesting in their own right, such as the fact that reflections in prime exceptional divisors are integral Hodge monodromy operators which, together with monodromy operators provided by birational transformations, yield a semidirect product decomposition of the monodromy group of Hodge isometries.

The global moduli theory of symplectic varieties

We develop the global moduli theory of symplectic varieties in the sense of Beauville. We prove a number of analogs of classical results from the smooth case, including a global Torelli theorem. In particular, this yields a new proof of Verbitsky's global Torelli theorem in the smooth case (assuming $b_2\geq 5$) which does not use the existence of a hyperkähler metric or twistor deformations.

Deformations of rational curves on primitive symplectic varieties and applications

We study the deformation theory of rational curves on primitive symplectic varieties and show that if the rational curves cover a divisor, then, as in the smooth case, they deform along their Hodge locus in the universal locally trivial deformation. As applications, we extend Markman's deformation invariance of prime exceptional divisors along their Hodge locus to this singular framework and provide existence results for uniruled ample divisors on primitive symplectic varieties which are locally trivial deformations of any moduli space of semistable objects on a projective $K3$ or fibers of the Albanese map of those on an abelian surface. We also present an application to the existence of prime exceptional divisors.

A global Torelli theorem for singular symplectic varieties

We systematically study the moduli theory of symplectic varieties (in the sense of Beauville) which admit a resolution by an irreducible symplectic manifold. In particular, we prove an analog of Verbitsky's global Torelli theorem for the locally trivial deformations of such varieties. Verbitsky's work on ergodic complex structures replaces twistor lines as the essential global input. In so doing we extend many of the local deformation-theoretic results known in the smooth case to such (not-necessarily-projective) symplectic varieties. We deduce a number of applications to the birational geometry of symplectic manifolds, including some results on the classification of birational contractions of $K3^{[n]}$-type varieties.

Algebraic Analysis of the Hypergeometric Function 1F1 of a Matrix Argument

In this article, we investigate Muirhead's classical system of differential operators for the hypergeometric function 1F1 of a matrix argument. We formulate a conjecture for the combinatorial structure of the characteristic variety of its Weyl closure which is both supported by computational evidence as well as theoretical considerations. In particular, we determine the singular locus of this system.

On the GHKS compactification of the moduli space of K3 surfaces of degree two

We investigate a toroidal compactification of the moduli space of K3 surfaces of degree $2$ originating from the program formulated by Gross-Hacking-Keel-Siebert. This construction uses Dolgachev's formulation of mirror symmetry and the birational geometry of the mirror family. Our main result in an analysis of the toric fan. For this we use the methods developed by two of us in a previous paper.

Geometric and Probabilistic Limit Theorems in Topological Data Analysis

We develop a general framework for the probabilistic analysis of random finite point clouds in the context of topological data analysis. We extend the notion of a barcode of a finite point cloud to compact metric spaces. Such a barcode lives in the completion of the space of barcodes with respect to the bottleneck distance, which is quite natural from an analytic point of view. As an application we prove that the barcodes of i.i.d. random variables sampled from a compact metric space converge to the barcode of the support of their distribution when the number of points goes to infinity. We also examine more quantitative convergence questions for uniform sampling from compact manifolds, including expectations of transforms of barcode valued random variables in Banach spaces. We believe that the methods developed here will serve as useful tools in studying more sophisticated questions in topological data analysis and related fields.

The complex geometry of a hypothetical complex structure on $S^6$

This article is a survey about or introduction to certain aspects of the complex geometry of a hypothetical complex structure on the six-sphere. We discuss a result of Peternell--Campana--Demailly on the algebraic dimension of a hypothetical complex six-sphere and give some examples. We also give an overview over an application of Huckleberry--Kebekus--Peternell on the group of biholomorphisms of such a complex six-sphere.

Towards a symplectic version of the Chevalley restriction theorem

If $(G,V)$ is a polar representation with Cartan subspace $\mathfrak c$ and Weyl group $W$, it is shown that there is a natural morphism of Poisson schemes $\mathfrak c \oplus {\mathfrak c}^*/W \to V\oplus V^*/\!\!/\!\!/ G$. This morphism is conjectured to be an isomorphism of the underlying reduced varieties if $(G,V)$ is visible. The conjecture is proved for visible stable locally free polar representations and certain further examples.

Stability of coisotropic fibrations on holomorphic symplectic manifolds

We investigate the stability of fibers of coisotropic fibrations on holomorphic symplectic manifolds and generalize Voisin's result on Lagrangian subvarieties to this framework. We present applications to the moduli space of holomorphic symplectic manifolds which are deformations equivalent to Hilbert schemes of points on a $K3$ surface or to generalized Kummer manifolds.
