Glueballs from Dyson-Schwinger and Bethe-Salpeter equations

The quenched spectrum of glueballs with positive charge parity is calculated from two-body bound state equations. As input, a self-contained solution for the primitively divergent correlation functions from Dyson-Schwinger equations is used. It only has one parameter to be set which is the physical scale. An important feature of this setup is the consistent construction of the bound state kernels along the same lines as the equations from which the input was obtained. Keeping only the one-particle exchanges, already good agreement with lattice results is obtained. For the tensor glueball, we present first results including two-loop contributions, elevating its calculation to the same level of truncation as for the spin zero glueballs for which such calculations have been done previously.

Finite-volume effects in baryon number fluctuations around the QCD critical endpoint

We present results for the volume dependence of baryon number fluctuations in the vicinity of the (conjectured) critical endpoint of QCD. They are extracted from the nonperturbative quark propagator that is obtained as a solution to a set of truncated Dyson--Schwinger equations of ($2 + 1$)-flavor QCD in Landau gauge, which takes the backcoupling of quarks onto the Yang--Mills sector explicitly into account. This well-studied system predicts a critical endpoint at moderate temperatures and rather large chemical potential. We investigate this system at small and intermediate finite, three-dimensional, cubic volumes and study the resulting impact on baryon number fluctuations and ratios thereof up to fourth order in the region of the critical endpoint. Due to the limitations of our truncation, the results are quantitatively meaningful only outside the critical scaling region of the endpoint. We find that the fluctuations are visibly affected by the finite volume, particularly for antiperiodic boundary conditions, whereas their ratios are practically invariant.

Towards a Stability Analysis of Inhomogeneous Phases in QCD

The possible occurrence of crystalline or inhomogeneous phases in the QCD phase diagram at large chemical potential has been under investigation for over thirty years. Such phases are present in models of QCD such as the Gross-Neveu model in 1+1 dimensions, Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) and quark meson models. Yet, no unambiguous confirmation exists from actual QCD. In this work, we propose a new approach for a stability analysis that is based on the two-particle irreducible effective action and compatible with full QCD calculations within the framework of functional methods. As a first test, we reproduce a known NJL model result within this framework. We then discuss the additional difficulties which arise in QCD due to the non-locality of the quark self-energy and suggest a method to overcome them. As a proof of principle and as an illustration of the analysis, we consider the Wigner-Weyl solution of the quark Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) within a simple truncation of QCD in the chiral limit and analyse its stability against homogeneous chiral-symmetry breaking fluctuations. For temperatures above and below the tricritical point we find that the boundary of the instability region coincides well with the second-order phase boundary or the left spinodal, respectively, obtained from the direct solutions of the DSEs. Finally, we outline how this method can be generalized to study inhomogeneous fluctuations.

$Δ$-baryon axialvector and pseudoscalar form factors, and associated PCAC relations

A quark+diquark Faddeev equation treatment of the baryon bound state problem in Poincaré-invariant quantum field theory is used to deliver parameter-free predictions for all six $Δ$-baryon elastic weak form factors. Amongst the results, it is worth highlighting that there are two distinct classes of such $Δ$-baryon form factors, $(g_1, g_3, G_{πΔΔ})$, $(h_1, h_3, H_{πΔΔ})$, the functions within each of which are separately linked via partial conservation of axial current (PCAC) and Goldberger-Treiman (GT) relations. Respectively within each class, the listed form factors possess qualitatively the same structural features as the nucleon axial, induced pseudoscalar, and pion-nucleon coupling form factors. For instance, the $Δ$-baryon $g_1$ axial form factor can reliably be approximated by a dipole function, characterised by an axial charge $g_A^{Δ^+}=0.71(9)$ and mass-scale $m_A^Δ=0.95(2)m_Δ$. Moreover, the two distinct $Δ$-baryon PCAC form factor relations are satisfied to a high degree of accuracy on a large range of $Q^2$; the associated GT relations present good approximations only on $Q^2/m_Δ^2 \simeq 0$; and pion pole dominance approximations are reliable within both classes. There are two $πΔΔ$ couplings: $g_{πΔΔ} = 10.46(1.88)$; $h_{πΔΔ}= 35.73(3.75)$; and the associated form factors are soft. Such couplings commonly arise in phenomenology, which may therefore benefit from our analyses. A flavour decomposition of the axial charges reveals that quarks carry $71$\% of the $Δ$-baryon spin. The analogous result for the proton is $\approx 65$\%.

QCD's equation of state from Dyson-Schwinger equations

In this contribution, we summarize a truncation-independent method to compute the equation of state within nonperturbative functional approaches. After demonstrating its viability, the method is applied to solutions obtained from a set of truncated Dyson-Schwinger equations for the quark and gluon propagators of (2+1)-flavor QCD to obtain thermodynamic quantities across the phase diagram of strong-interaction matter.

Critical Endpoint of QCD and Baryon Number Fluctuations in a Finite Volume

We summarize recent results on the volume dependence of the location of the critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram. To this end, we employ a sophisticated combination of Lattice Yang--Mills theory and a (truncated) version of Dyson--Schwinger equations in Landau gauge for $2 + 1$ quark flavours. We study this system at small and intermediate volumes and determine the dependence of the location of the critical endpoint on the boundary conditions and the volume of a three-dimensional cube with edge length $L$. We also discuss recent results on baryon number fluctuations in this setup.

Four-quark states from functional methods

The discovery of four-quark states attracted a lot of attention from the theoretical as well as the experimental side. To study their properties from QCD we use a functional framework which combines (truncated) Dyson-Schwinger and Bethe-Salpeter equations in Landau gauge. This approach allows us to extract qualitative results for mass spectra, decay widths and wavefunctions of candidates for bound as well as resonant four-quark states. Furthermore, we can investigate the possible internal structure of such states. We report on recent developments and results using this functional framework and give an overview about the current status as well as future developments.

Glueballs from bound state equations

Glueballs are bound states in the spectrum of quantum chromodynamics which consist only of gluons. They belong to the group of exotic hadrons which are widely studied experimentally and theoretically. We summarize how to calculate glueballs in a functional framework and discuss results for pure Yang-Mills theory. Our setup is totally self-contained with the scale being the only external input. We enumerate a range of tests that provide evidence of the stability of the results. This illustrates the potential of functional equations as a continuum first-principles method complementary to lattice calculations.

The phenomenology of the exotic hybrid nonet with $π_1(1600)$ and $η_1(1855)$

We study the decays of the $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ hybrid nonet using a Lagrangian invariant under the flavor symmetry, parity reversal, and charge conjugation. We use the available experimental data, the lattice predictions, and the flavor constraints to evaluate the coupling strengths of the $π_1(1600)$ to various two-body mesonic states. Using these coupling constants, we estimate the partial widths of the two-body decays of the hybrid pion, kaon and the isoscalars. We find that the hybrid kaon can be nearly as broad as the $π_1(1600)$. Quite remarkably, we find also that the light isoscalar must be significantly narrow while the width of the heavy isoscalar can be matched to the recently observed $η_1(1855)$.

Four-quark states with charm quarks in a two-body Bethe-Salpeter approach

We study the internal structure of a range of four-quark states with charm quark contributions using a two-body Bethe-Salpeter equation. Thereby, we examine charmonium-like states with hidden charm and quark content $c\bar{c}q\bar{q}$, open-charm states with quark content $cc\bar{q}\bar{q}$ and all-charm states with $cc\bar{c}\bar{c}$. In particular we study the internal competition between meson-meson components and diquark-antidiquark components in the wave functions of these states. Our results indicate that the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ and the $Z_c(3900)$ are predominantly $D\bar D^*$ states and that the recently discovered open-charm state $T_{cc}^+$ is dominated by an internal $DD^*$ component. In both cases the diquark components are negligible. For the all-charm state $X(6900)$ with as yet unknown quantum numbers we identify candidates in the excitation spectra of $0^+$ and $1^+$ states. Furthermore, our framework serves to provide predictions for further, yet undiscovered open and hidden charm four-quark states.

Nucleon axial-vector and pseudoscalar form factors, and PCAC relations

We use a continuum quark+diquark approach to the nucleon bound-state problem in relativistic quantum field theory to deliver parameter-free predictions for the nucleon axial and induced pseudoscalar form factors, $G_A$ and $G_P$, and unify them with the pseudoscalar form factor $G_5$ or, equivalently, the pion-nucleon form factor $G_{πNN}$. We explain how partial conservation of the axial-vector current and the associated Goldberger-Treiman relation are satisfied once all necessary couplings of the external current to the building blocks of the nucleon are constructed consistently; in particular, we fully resolve the seagull couplings to the diquark-quark vertices associated with the axial-vector and pseudoscalar currents. Among the results we describe, the following are worth highlighting. A dipole form factor defined by an axial charge $g_A=G_A(0)=1.25(3)$ and a mass-scale $M_A = 1.23(3) m_N$, where $m_N$ is the nucleon mass, can accurately describe the pointwise behaviour of $G_A$. Concerning $G_P$, we obtain the pseudoscalar charge $g_p^\ast = 8.80(23)$, and find that the pion pole dominance approach delivers a reliable estimate of the directly computed result. Our computed value of the pion-nucleon coupling constant, $g_{πNN}/m_N =14.02(33)/{\rm GeV}$ is consistent with recent precision determinations.

Electromagnetic and strong isospin breaking in light meson masses

We study electromagnetic as well as strong isospin breaking effects in the isospin mass splittings of light pseudoscalar and vector mesons. To this end we employ a coupled system of quark Dyson-Schwinger and meson Bethe-Salpeter equations whose interaction kernels contain gluon, pion and photon exchange interactions. In bound states, QCD-induced isospin breaking is manifest on different levels. On the one hand, a different explicit up- and down-quark mass directly affects the propagators of the constituent quarks. On the other hand, it leads to different interaction kernels within the isospin multiplets. In addition, electromagnetic isospin breaking is induced via a photon exchange diagram. Using the kaon iso-doublet and the charged pion masses as input to determine the up, down and strange quark masses we find for the pion, kaon and rho meson mass splittings different patterns each. In particular, our results provide evidence that the effects from two sources of mass splittings, the different quark masses and the different quark charges, do not add up linearly.

Quenched glueballs in the DSE/BSE framework

The spectrum of glueballs with quantum numbers $J^\mathsf{PC}=0^{\pm+},2^{\pm+},3^{\pm+},4^{\pm+}$ is calculated in quenched quantum chromodynamics from bound state equations. The input is taken from a parameter-free calculation of two- and three-point functions. Our results agree well with lattice results where available and contain also some additional states. For the scalar glueball, we present first results for the effects of additional diagrams which turn out to be strongly suppressed.

Higher spin glueballs from functional methods

We calculate the glueball spectrum for spin up to J=4 and positive charge parity in pure Yang-Mills theory. We construct the full bases for J=0,1,2,3,4 and discuss the relation to gauge invariant operators. Using a fully self-contained truncation of Dyson-Schwinger equations as input, we obtain ground states and first and second excited states from extrapolations of the eigenvalue curves. Where available, we find good quantitative agreement with lattice results.

Quenched glueball spectrum from functional equations

We give an overview of results for the quenched glueball spectrum from two-body bound state equations based on the 3PI effective action. The setup, which uses self-consistently calculated two- and three-point functions as input, is completely self-contained and does not have any free parameters except for the coupling. The results for $J^{\mathsf{PC}}=0^{\pm+},2^{\pm+},3^{\pm+},4^{\pm+}$ are in good agreement with recent lattice results where available. For the pseudoscalar glueball, we present first results from a two-loop complete calculation, rendering also the bound state calculation fully self-consistent.

Baryon number fluctuations in the QCD phase diagram from Dyson-Schwinger equations

We present results for fluctuations of the baryon number for QCD at nonzero temperature and chemical potential. These are extracted from solutions to a coupled set of truncated Dyson-Schwinger equations for the quark and gluon propagators of Landau-gauge QCD with $N_f = 2 + 1$ quark flavors, that has been studied previously. We discuss the changes of fluctuations and ratios thereof up to fourth order for several temperatures and baryon chemical potential up to and beyond the critical endpoint. In the context of preliminary STAR data for the skewness and kurtosis ratios, the results are compatible with the scenario of a critical endpoint at large chemical potential and slightly offset from the freeze-out line. We also discuss the caveats involved in this comparison.

Critical endpoint of QCD in a finite volume

We investigate the impact of finite volume and the corresponding restrictions on long-range correlations on the location of the critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram. To this end, we employ a sophisticated combination of lattice Yang--Mills theory and a (truncated) version of Dyson--Schwinger equations in Landau gauge for $2 + 1$ quark flavors that has been studied extensively in the past. In the infinite-volume limit, this system predicts a critical endpoint at moderate temperature and large chemical potential. We study this system at small and intermediate volumes and determine the dependence of the location of the critical endpoint on the boundary conditions and the volume of a three-dimensional cube with edge length $L$. We demonstrate that noticeable volume effects of more than five percent only occur for $L \lesssim 5 \, \text{fm}$ and that volumes as large as $L^3 \gtrsim (8 \, \text{fm})^3$ are very close to the infinite-volume limit.

The light scalars: four- vs. two-quark states in the complex energy plane from Bethe-Salpeter equations

We study the dynamical generation of scalar mesons in the light quark sector ($q\in\{u,d,s\}$) and calculate the masses and widths for the $f_0(500),a_0(980)$ and $f_0(980)$. To this end we study the mixing of conventional $q\bar{q}$ and `exotic' $q\bar{q}q\bar{q}$ states via a coupled set of two-body Bethe-Salpeter equations based on a symmetry-preserving truncation of the underlying Dyson-Schwinger equations. This allows us to determine the dominant components of each state. Furthermore, we extend our previous framework into the complex energy plane such that we can study the analytic structure of the states in question and extract their width. At the physical point of small quark masses, the $σ$ meson is predominantly a $ππ$ resonance. Consequently, its mass and width is driven by the effects of chiral symmetry breaking. At larger quark masses, however, the conventional $q\bar{q}$ components take over. Furthermore, we find a strong molecular $K\bar{K}$ component for both, the strange-light $f_0(980)$ and the $a_0(980)$.
