Double Copy from Homotopy Algebras

We show that the BRST Lagrangian double copy construction of $\mathcal{N}=0$ supergravity as the `square' of Yang-Mills theory finds a natural interpretation in terms of homotopy algebras. We significantly expand on our previous work arguing the validity of the double copy at the loop level, and we give a detailed derivation of the double copied Lagrangian and BRST operator. Our constructions are very general and can be applied to a vast set of examples.

$L_\infty$-Algebras of Classical Field Theories and the Batalin-Vilkovisky Formalism

We review in detail the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism for Lagrangian field theories and its mathematical foundations with an emphasis on higher algebraic structures and classical field theories. In particular, we show how a field theory gives rise to an $L_\infty$-algebra and how quasi-isomorphisms between $L_\infty$-algebras correspond to classical equivalences of field theories. A few experts may be familiar with parts of our discussion, however, the material is presented from the perspective of a very general notion of a gauge theory. We also make a number of new observations and present some new results. Most importantly, we discuss in great detail higher (categorified) Chern-Simons theories and give some useful shortcuts in usually rather involved computations.

Towards an M5-Brane Model III: Self-Duality from Additional Trivial Fields

We present a six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric higher gauge theory in which self-duality is consistently implemented by physically trivial additional fields. The action contains both $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ tensor and vector multiplets and is non-trivially interacting. The tensor multiplet part is loosely related to a recently proposed action by Sen that leads to on-shell self-duality in an elegant way. As we also show, Sen's action finds a very natural and direct interpretation from a homotopy algebraic perspective.

BRST-Lagrangian Double Copy of Yang-Mills Theory

We show that the double copy of gauge theory amplitudes to $\mathcal{N}=0$ supergravity amplitudes extends from tree level to loop level. We first explain that color-kinematic duality is a condition for the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin operator and the action of a field theory with cubic interaction terms to double copy to a consistent gauge theory. We then apply this argument to Yang-Mills theory, where color-kinematic duality is known to be satisfied onshell at tree level. Finally, we show that the latter restriction can only lead to terms that can be absorbed in a sequence of field redefinitions, rendering the double copied action equivalent to $\mathcal{N}=0$ supergravity.

Adjusted Parallel Transport for Higher Gauge Theories

Many physical theories, including notably string theory, require non-abelian higher gauge fields defining higher holonomy. Previous approaches to such higher connections on categorified principal bundles require these to be fake flat. This condition, however, renders them locally gauge equivalent to connections on abelian gerbes. For particular higher gauge groups, for example 2-group models of the string group, this limitation can be overcome by generalizing the notion of higher connection. Starting from this observation, we define a corresponding generalized higher holonomy functor which is free from the fake flatness condition, leading to a truly non-abelian parallel transport.

Scattering Amplitude Recursion Relations in BV Quantisable Theories

Tree-level scattering amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory satisfy a recursion relation due to Berends and Giele which yields e.g. the famous Parke-Taylor formula for MHV amplitudes. We show that the origin of this recursion relation becomes clear in the BV formalism, which encodes a field theory in an $L_\infty$-algebra. The recursion relation is obtained in the transition to a smallest representative in the quasi-isomorphism class of that $L_\infty$-algebra, known as a minimal model. In fact, the quasi-isomorphism contains all the information about the scattering theory. As we explain, the computation of such a minimal model is readily performed in any BV quantisable theory, which, in turn, produces recursion relations for its tree-level scattering amplitudes.

Symmetry Factors of Feynman Diagrams and the Homological Perturbation Lemma

We discuss the symmetry factors of Feynman diagrams of scalar field theories with polynomial potential. After giving a concise general formula for them, we present an elementary and direct proof that when computing scattering amplitudes using the homological perturbation lemma, each contributing Feynman diagram is indeed included with the correct symmetry factor.

Perturbative Quantum Field Theory and Homotopy Algebras

We review the homotopy algebraic perspective on perturbative quantum field theory: classical field theories correspond to homotopy algebras such as $A_\infty$- and $L_\infty$-algebras. Furthermore, their scattering amplitudes are encoded in minimal models of these homotopy algebras at tree level and their quantum relatives at loop level. The translation between Lagrangian field theories and homotopy algebras is provided by the Batalin--Vilkovisky formalism. The minimal models are computed recursively using the homological perturbation lemma, which induces useful recursion relations for the computation of scattering amplitudes. After explaining how the homological perturbation lemma produces the usual Feynman diagram expansion, we use our techniques to verify an identity for the Berends--Giele currents which implies the Kleiss--Kuijf relations.

Towards an M5-Brane Model II: Metric String Structures

In this paper, we develop the mathematical formulation of metric string structures. These play a crucial role in the formulation of certain six-dimensional superconformal field theories and we believe that they also underlie potential future formulations of the (2,0)-theory. We show that the connections on non-abelian gerbes usually introduced in the literature are problematic in that they are locally gauge equivalent to connections on abelian gerbes. Connections on string structures form an exception and we introduce the general concept of an adjusted Weil algebra leading to potentially interacting connections on higher principal bundles. Considering a special case, we derive the metric extension of string structures and the corresponding adjusted Weil algebra. The latter lead to connections that were previously constructed by hand in the context of gauged supergravities. We also explain how the Leibniz algebras induced by an embedding tensor in gauged supergravities fit into our picture.

Loop Amplitudes and Quantum Homotopy Algebras

We derive a recursion relation for loop-level scattering amplitudes of Lagrangian field theories that generalises the tree-level Berends-Giele recursion relation in Yang-Mills theory. The origin of this recursion relation is the homological perturbation lemma, which allows us to compute scattering amplitudes from minimal models of quantum homotopy algebras in a recursive way. As an application of our techniques, we give an alternative proof of the relation between non-planar and planar colour-stripped scattering amplitudes.

The Non-Abelian Self-Dual String and the (2,0)-Theory

We argue that the relevant higher gauge group for the non-abelian generalization of the self-dual string equation is the string 2-group. We then derive the corresponding equations of motion and discuss their properties. The underlying geometric picture is a string structure, i.e. a categorified principal bundle with connection whose structure 2-group is the string 2-group. We readily write down the explicit elementary solution to our equations, which is the categorified analogue of the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole. Our solution passes all the relevant consistency checks; in particular, it is globally defined on $\mathbb{R}^4$ and approaches the abelian self-dual string of charge one at infinity. We note that our equations also arise as the BPS equations in a recently proposed six-dimensional superconformal field theory and we show that with our choice of higher gauge structure, the action of this theory can be reduced to four-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory.

Extended Riemannian Geometry III: Global Double Field Theory with Nilmanifolds

We describe the global geometry, symmetries and tensors for Double Field Theory over pairs of nilmanifolds with fluxes or gerbes. This is achieved by a rather straightforward application of a formalism we developed previously. This formalism constructs the analogue of a Courant algebroid over the correspondence space of a T-duality, using the language of graded manifolds, derived brackets and we use the description of nilmanifolds in terms of periodicity conditions rather than local patches. The strong section condition arises purely algebraically, and we show that for a particularly symmetric solution of this condition, we recover the Courant algebroids of both nilmanifolds with fluxes. We also discuss the finite, global symmetries of general local Double Field Theory and explain how this specializes to the case of T-duality between nilmanifolds.

Higher Structures in M-Theory

The key open problem of string theory remains its non-perturbative completion to M-theory. A decisive hint to its inner workings comes from numerous appearances of higher structures in the limits of M-theory that are already understood, such as higher degree flux fields and their dualities, or the higher algebraic structures governing closed string field theory. These are all controlled by the higher homotopy theory of derived categories, generalised cohomology theories, and $L_\infty$-algebras. This is the introductory chapter to the proceedings of the LMS/EPSRC Durham Symposium on Higher Structures in M-Theory. We first review higher structures as well as their motivation in string theory and beyond. Then we list the contributions in this volume, putting them into context.

Higher Structures, Self-Dual Strings and 6d Superconformal Field Theories

I summarize and discuss some recent results on formulating actions of six-dimensional superconformal field theories using the language of higher gauge theory. The latter guarantees mathematical consistency of our constructions and we review crucial aspects of this framework, such as $L_\infty$-algebras and corresponding kinematical data given by higher connections. We then show that there is a mathematically consistent non-Abelian extension of the self-dual string equation which satisfies many physical expectations. Our construction favors a particular higher gauge group leading us to higher principal bundles known as string structures. Using these, we manage to formulate a six-dimensional action which shares many properties with the famous $(2,0)$-theory but also still differs from it in some key points.

$L_\infty$-Algebras, the BV Formalism, and Classical Fields

We summarise some of our recent works on $L_\infty$-algebras and quasi-groups with regard to higher principal bundles and their applications in twistor theory and gauge theory. In particular, after a lightning review of $L_\infty$-algebras, we discuss their Maurer-Cartan theory and explain that any classical field theory admitting an action can be reformulated in this context with the help of the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. As examples, we explore higher Chern-Simons theory and Yang-Mills theory. We also explain how these ideas can be combined with those of twistor theory to formulate maximally superconformal gauge theories in four and six dimensions by means of $L_\infty$-quasi-isomorphisms, and we propose a twistor space action.

Extended Riemannian Geometry I: Local Double Field Theory

We present an extended version of Riemannian geometry suitable for the description of current formulations of double field theory (DFT). This framework is based on graded manifolds and it yields extended notions of symmetries, dynamical data and constraints. In special cases, we recover general relativity with and without 1-, 2- and 3-form gauge potentials as well as DFT. We believe that our extended Riemannian geometry helps to clarify the role of various constructions in DFT. For example, it leads to a covariant form of the strong section condition. Furthermore, it should provide a useful step towards global and coordinate invariant descriptions of T- and U-duality invariant field theories.

Extended Riemannian Geometry II: Local Heterotic Double Field Theory

We continue our exploration of local Double Field Theory (DFT) in terms of symplectic graded manifolds carrying compatible derivations and study the case of heterotic DFT. We start by developing in detail the differential graded manifold that captures heterotic Generalized Geometry which leads to new observations on the generalized metric and its twists. We then give a symplectic pre-NQ-manifold that captures the symmetries and the geometry of local heterotic DFT. We derive a weakened form of the section condition, which arises algebraically from consistency of the symmetry Lie 2-algebra and its action on extended tensors. We also give appropriate notions of twists-which are required for global formulations-and of the torsion and Riemann tensors. Finally, we show how the observed $α'$-corrections are interpreted naturally in our framework.

Towards an M5-Brane Model I: A 6d Superconformal Field Theory

We present an action for a six-dimensional superconformal field theory containing a non-abelian tensor multiplet. All of the ingredients of this action have been available in the literature. We bring these pieces together by choosing the string Lie 2-algebra as a gauge structure, which we motivated in previous work. The kinematical data contains a connection on a categorified principal bundle, which is the appropriate mathematical description of the parallel transport of self-dual strings. Our action can be written down for each of the simply laced Dynkin diagrams, and each case reduces to a four-dimensional supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory with corresponding gauge Lie algebra. Our action also reduces nicely to an M2-brane model which is a deformation of the ABJM model. While this action is certainly not the desired M5-brane model, we regard it as a key stepping stone towards a potential construction of the (2,0)-theory.
