Circular Coloring of Random Graphs: Statistical Physics Investigation

Circular coloring is a constraints satisfaction problem where colors are assigned to nodes in a graph in such a way that every pair of connected nodes has two consecutive colors (the first color being consecutive to the last). We study circular coloring of random graphs using the cavity method. We identify two very interesting properties of this problem. For sufficiently many color and sufficiently low temperature there is a spontaneous breaking of the circular symmetry between colors and a phase transition forwards a ferromagnet-like phase. Our second main result concerns 5-circular coloring of random 3-regular graphs. While this case is found colorable, we conclude that the description via one-step replica symmetry breaking is not sufficient. We observe that simulated annealing is very efficient to find proper colorings for this case. The 5-circular coloring of 3-regular random graphs thus provides a first known example of a problem where the ground state energy is known to be exactly zero yet the space of solutions probably requires a full-step replica symmetry breaking treatment.

Controlled Polar Asymmetry of Few-Cycle and Intense Mid-Infrared Pulses

We demonstrate synthesis of super-octave-spanning and phase-locked transients in the multi-terahertz frequency range with amplitudes exceeding 13 MV/cm. Sub-cycle polar asymmetry of the electric field is adjusted by changing the relative phase between superposed fundamental and second harmonic components. The resultant broken symmetry of the field profile is directly resolved via ultrabroadband electro-optic sampling. Access to such waveforms provides a direct route for control of low-energy degrees of freedom in condensed matter as well as non-perturbative light-matter interactions.

On U- and V-statistics for discontinuous Ito semimartingales

In this paper we examine the asymptotic theory for U-statistics and V-statistics of discontinuous Ito semimartingales that are observed at high frequency. For different types of kernel functions we show laws of large numbers and associated stable central limit theorems. In most of the cases the limiting process will be conditionally centered Gaussian. The structure of the kernel function determines whether the jump and/or the continuous part of the semimartingale contribute to the limit.

Limit theorems for nondegenerate U-statistics of continuous semimartingales

This paper presents the asymptotic theory for nondegenerate $U$-statistics of high frequency observations of continuous Itô semimartingales. We prove uniform convergence in probability and show a functional stable central limit theorem for the standardized version of the $U$-statistic. The limiting process in the central limit theorem turns out to be conditionally Gaussian with mean zero. Finally, we indicate potential statistical applications of our probabilistic results.

Equation of state at finite net-baryon density using Taylor coefficients up to sixth order

We employ the lattice QCD data on Taylor expansion coefficients up to sixth order to construct an equation of state at finite net-baryon density. When we take into account how hadron masses depend on lattice spacing and quark mass, the coefficients evaluated using the p4 action are equal to those of hadron resonance gas at low temperature. Thus the parametrised equation of state can be smoothly connected to the hadron resonance gas equation of state. We see that the equation of state using Taylor coefficients up to second order is realistic only at low densities, and that at densities corresponding to s/n_B > 40, the expansion converges by the sixth order term.

The strange degrees of freedom in QCD at high temperature

We discuss recent results on fluctuations of conserved charges, and their approach to the hadron resonance gas at temperatures below the chiral crossover (Tc) as well as to a gas of free quarks at very high temperatures. We will focus on the strange degrees of freedom and verify that they are consistent with those of an uncorrelated gas of hadrons for temperatures of T<160 MeV and that they can be described by a quasi particle model at best for T>2Tc. To extract this information we use all cumulants of net baryon number and net strangeness fluctuations and their correlations up to the fourth order. In particular we propose observables that serve as indicator for the validity of the hadronic degrees of freedom and show that the partial pressures from different strangeness sectors agree separately with HRG model predictions.

Chiral restoration and deconfinement in two-color QCD with two flavors of staggered quarks

In preparation of lattice studies of the two-color QCD phase diagram we study chiral restoration and deconfinement at finite temperature with two flavors of staggered quarks using an RHMC algorithm on GPUs. We first study unquenching effects in local Polyakov loop distributions, and the Polyakov loop potential obtained via Legendre transformation, in a fixed-scale approach for heavier quarks. We also present the chiral condensate and the corresponding susceptibility over the lattice coupling across the chiral transition for lighter quarks. Using Ferrenberg-Swendsen reweighting we extract the maxima of the chiral susceptibility in order to determine pseudo-critical couplings on various lattices suitable for chiral extrapolations. These are then used to fix the relation between coupling and temperature in the chiral limit.

Strangeness at high temperatures

We use up to fourth order cumulants of net strangeness fluctuations and their correlations with net baryon number fluctuations to extract information on the strange meson and baryon contribution to the low temperature hadron resonance gas, the dissolution of strange hadronic states in the crossover region of the QCD transition and the quasi-particle nature of strange quark contributions to the high temperature quark-gluon plasma phase.

Conserved charge fluctuations with HISQ fermions

We calculate cumulants of fluctuations of net-baryon number, net-electric charge and net-strangeness, in the framework of lattice regularized QCD. We use a highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action on lattices with temporal extent of N_tau=6,8 and 12 and almost physical quark masses. By means of a Taylor expansion in various chemical potentials and under demanding both strangeness neutrality as well as the correct isospin asymmetry, we evaluate these fluctuations at conditions met in heavy ion collisions. Cumulants of net-electric charge fluctuations can, in principle, also be measured in heavy ion experiments. We therefore propose a method to extract freeze-out parameters, such as the freeze-out temperature and baryon chemical potential, based on a comparison of lattice results and experimental measurements of two different ratios of net-electric charge cumulants. As this method involves only (lattice) QCD results and experimental measurements it is model independent and, for the purpose of extracting freeze-out parameters, does not require any input from hadron resonance gas model calculations.

Baryon number and charge fluctuations from lattice QCD

We calculate electric and baryonic charge fluctuations on the lattice. Results have been obtained with the highly improved staggered quark action (HISQ) and almost physical quark masses on lattices with spacial extent of $N_τ=6,8,12$. Higher order cumulants of the net-charge distributions are increasingly dominated by a universal scaling behavior, which is arising due to a critical point of QCD in the chiral limit. Considering cumulants up to the sixth order, we observe that they generically behave as expected from universal scaling laws, which is quite different from the cumulants calculated within the hadron resonance gas model. Taking ratios of these cumulants, we obtain volume independent results that can be compared to the experimental measurements. Such a comparison will unambiguously relate the QCD transition temperature that has been determined on the lattice with the freeze out temperature of heavy ion collision at LHC and RHIC.

QCD bulk thermodynamics and conserved charge fluctuations with HISQ fermions

After briefly reviewing recent progress by the HotQCD collaboration in studying the 2+1 flavor QCD equation of state, we will focus on results on fluctuations of conserved charges by the BNL-Bielefeld and HotQCD collaborations. Higher order cumulants of the net-charge distributions are increasingly dominated by a universal scaling behavior, which arises due to a critical point of QCD in the chiral limit. Considering cumulants up to the 6^{th} order, we observe that they generically behave as expected from universal scaling laws, which is quite different from cumulants calculated within the hadron resonance gas model. Taking ratios of these cumulants, we obtain volume independent results that can be compared to the experimental measurements. We will argue that the freeze-out chemical potentials and the freeze-out temperature, usually obtained by a HRG model fit to the measured hadronic yields, can also be obtained in a model independent way from ab-initio lattice QCD calculations by utilizing observables related to conserved charge fluctuations. Further, we will show that the freeze-out strangeness and electric charge chemical potentials can be fixed by imposing strangeness neutrality and isospin asymmetry constraints in the lattice QCD calculations, in order to accommodate conditions met in heavy ion collisions. All results have been obtained with the highly improved staggered quark action (HISQ) and almost physical quark masses on lattices with temporal extent of N_τ=6,8,10,12.

Fluctuations and Correlations of net baryon number, electric charge, and strangeness: A comparison of lattice QCD results with the hadron resonance gas model

We calculate the quadratic fluctuations of net baryon number, electric charge and strangeness as well as correlations among these conserved charges in (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD at zero chemical potential. Results are obtained using calculations with tree level improved gauge and the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) actions with almost physical light and strange quark masses at three different values of the lattice cut-off. Our choice of parameters corresponds to a value of 160 MeV for the lightest pseudo scalar Goldstone mass and a physical value of the kaon mass. The three diagonal charge susceptibilities and the correlations among conserved charges have been extrapolated to the continuum limit in the temperature interval 150 MeV <T < 250 MeV. We compare our results with the hadron resonance gas (HRG) model calculations and find agreement with HRG model results only for temperatures T<= 150 MeV. We observe significant deviations in the temperature range 160 MeV < T < 170 MeV and qualitative differences in the behavior of the three conserved charge sectors. At T < 160 MeV quadratic net baryon number fluctuations in QCD agree with HRG model calculations while, the net electric charge fluctuations in QCD are about 10% smaller and net strangeness fluctuations are about 20% larger. These findings are relevant to the discussion of freeze-out conditions in relativistic heavy ion collisions.

Equation of state at non-zero baryon density based on lattice QCD

We employ the lattice QCD data on Taylor expansion coefficients to extend our previous parametrization of the equation of state to finite baryon density. When we take into account lattice spacing and quark mass dependence of the hadron masses, the Taylor coefficients at low temperature are equal to those of hadron resonance gas. Parametrized lattice equation of state can thus be smoothly connected to the hadron resonance gas equation of state at low temperatures.

Dynamics of Metal Centers Monitored by Nuclear Inelastic Scattering

Nuclear inelastic scattering of synchrotron radiation has been used now since 10 years as a tool for vibrational spectroscopy. This method has turned out especially useful in case of large molecules that contain a Mössbauer active metal center. Recent applications to iron-sulfur proteins, to iron(II) spin crossover complexes and to tin-DNA complexes are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the combination of nuclear inelastic scattering and density functional calculations.

On the universal critical behavior in 3-flavor QCD

We analyze the universal critical behavior at the chiral critical point in QCD with three degenerate quark masses. We confirm that this critical point lies in the universality class of the three dimensional Ising model. The symmetry of the Ising model, which is Z(2), is not directly realized in the QCD Hamiltonian. After making an ansatz for the magnetization- and energy-like operators as linear admixtures of the chiral condensate and the gluonic action, we determine several non-universal mixing and normalization constants. These parameters determine an unambiguous mapping of the critical behavior in QCD to that of the 3d-Ising model. We verify its validity by showing that the thus obtained orderparameter scales in accordance with the magnetic equation of state of the 3d-Ising model.

Universal O(N) scaling and the chiral critical line in (2+1)-flavor QCD with small chemical potentials

We show that for small values of the chemical potential the curvature of the phase transition line can be deduced from an analysis of scaling properties of the chiral condensate and its susceptibilities. We make use of a recent analysis of the magnetic equation of state in (2+1)-flavor QCD where a connection between the QCD parameters and the universal scaling fields could be established. The remaining dependence of the reduced temperature on the chemical potential can be fixed by an analysis of a mixed susceptibility, obtained from a derivative with respect to quark mass and chemical potential. We extract this dependence which describes the curvature of the phase transition line, at two values of the cut-off, $aT=1/4$ and $1/8$. We find that cut-off effects are small for the curvature parameter and determine the transition line in the chiral limit to leading order in the light quark chemical potential. We obtain $T_c(μ_B)/T_c(0) = 1 - 0.00656(66) (μ_B/T)^2 +{\cal O}(μ_B^4)$.

Universal critical behavior and the transition temperature in (2+1)-flavor QCD

We discuss the universal critical behavior in (2+1)-flavor QCD by analyzing lattice data from improved staggered fermions generated by the HotQCD Collaboration. We present recent results from two different lattice discretizations and various lattice spacings ($N_τ=6,8,12$) at fixed physical strange quark mass ($m_s$) but varying light quark mass ($m_l$). We find that the chiral order-parameter, i.e. the chiral condensate, shows the expected universal scaling that is associated with the critical point in the chiral limit already for light quark masses $m_l/m_s \lsim 0.05$. From an analysis of the disconnected chiral susceptibility we estimate a preliminary value of the QCD transition temperature.
