Non-Gaussianity beyond slow roll in multi-field inflation

We study the non-Gaussianity generated during multiple-field inflation. We provide an exact expression for the bispectrum parameter f_NL which is valid beyond the slow-roll regime, valid for certain classes of inflationary models. We then study a new, exact multi-field inflationary model considering a case where the bispectrum grows to observable values at the end of inflation. We show that in this case the trispectrum is also large and may even provide the dominant signal of non-Gaussianity.

A weak lensing view on primordial non-Gaussianities

We investigate the signature of primordial non-Gaussianities in the weak lensing bispectrum, in particular the signals generated by local, orthogonal and equilateral non-Gaussianities. The questions we address include the signal-to-noise ratio generated in the Euclid weak lensing survey (we find the 1sigma-errors for fNL are 200, 575 and 1628 for local, orthogonal and equilateral non-Gaussianities, respectively), misestimations of fNL if one chooses the wrong non-Gaussianity model (misestimations by up to a factor of +/-3 in fNL are possible, depending on the choice of the model), the probability of noticing such a mistake (improbably large values for the chi^2-functional occur from fNL 200 on), degeneracies of the primordial bispectrum with other cosmological parameters (only the matter density Omega_m plays a significant role), and the subtraction of the much larger, structure-formation generated bispectrum. If a prior on a standard wCDM-parameter set is available from Euclid and Planck, the structure formation bispectrum can be predicted accurately enough for subtraction, and any residual structure formation bispectrum would influence the estimation of fNL to a minor degree. Configuration-space integrations which appear in the evaluation of chi^2-functionals and related quantities can be carried out very efficiently with Monte-Carlo techniques, which reduce the complexity by a factor of O(10^4) while delivering sub-percent accuracies. Weak lensing probes smaller scales than the CMB and hence provide an additional constraint on non-Gaussianities, even though they are not as sensitive to primordial non-Gaussianities as the CMB.

Scale-dependence of Non-Gaussianity in the Curvaton Model

We investigate the scale-dependence of f_NL in the self-interacting curvaton model. We show that the scale-dependence, encoded in the spectral index n_{f_NL}, can be observable by future cosmic microwave background observations, such as CMBpol, in a significant part of the parameter space of the model. We point out that together with information about the trispectrum g_NL, the self-interacting curvaton model parameters could be completely fixed by observations. We also discuss the scale-dependence of g_NL and its implications for the curvaton model, arguing that it could provide a complementary probe in cases where the theoretical value of n_{f_NL} is below observational sensitivity.

How the curvaton scenario, modulated reheating and an inhomogeneous end of inflation are related

In this paper we analyse three models of the early universe, for which the respective mechanisms for generating the curvature perturbation are considered disparate. We find that in fact the mechanisms are very similar, and hence explain why they give rise to a large non-gaussianity. We show that the mechanism for generating the primordial curvature perturbation, and hence the observable non-gaussianity, is similar in both the Curvaton and Modulated Reheating models. In both cases the model can be written in terms of an energy transfer between the constituting fluids. We then show that this is also true for the mechanism of generating the curvature perturbation by symmetry breaking the end of inflation. We then relate this to the non-gaussian contribution to the curvature perturbation and find that it is inversely proportional to the efficiency with which the curvature perturbation is transferred between the fluids. For the first time, we generalise models of modulated reheating to allow for a non-linear energy transfer rate.

Scale-dependent non-Gaussianity probes inflationary physics

We calculate the scale dependence of the bispectrum and trispectrum in (quasi) local models of non-Gaussian primordial density perturbations, and characterize this scale dependence in terms of new observable parameters. They can help to discriminate between models of inflation, since they are sensitive to properties of the inflationary physics that are not probed by the standard observables. We find consistency relations between these parameters in certain classes of models. We apply our results to a scenario of modulated reheating, showing that the scale dependence of non-Gaussianity can be significant. We also discuss the scale dependence of the bispectrum and trispectrum, in cases where one varies the shape as well as the overall scale of the figure under consideration. We conclude providing a formulation of the curvature perturbation in real space, which generalises the standard local form by dropping the assumption that f_NL and g_NL are constants.

Inflationary Infrared Divergences: Geometry of the Reheating Surface vs. delta N Formalism

We describe a simple way of incorporating fluctuations of the Hubble scale during the horizon exit of scalar perturbations into the delta N formalism. The dominant effect comes from the dependence of the Hubble scale on low-frequency modes of the inflaton. This modifies the coefficient of the log-enhanced term appearing in the curvature spectrum at second order in field fluctuations. With this modification, the relevant coefficient turns out to be proportional to the second derivative of the tree-level spectrum with respect to the inflaton phi at horizon exit. A logarithm with precisely the same coefficient appears in a calculation of the log-enhancement of the curvature spectrum based purely on the geometry of the reheating surface. We take this agreement as strong support for the proposed implementation of the delta N formalism. Moreover, our analysis makes it apparent that the log-enhancement of the inflationary power-spectrum is indeed physical if this quantity is defined using a global coordinate system on the reheating surface (or any other post-inflationary surface of constant energy density). However, it can be avoided by defining the spectrum using invariant distances on this surface.

CMB Constraints on Primordial non-Gaussianity from the Bispectrum (f_{NL}) and Trispectrum (g_{NL} and τ_{NL}) and a New Consistency Test of Single-Field Inflation

We outline the expected constraints on non-Gaussianity from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) with current and future experiments, focusing on both the third (f_{NL}) and fourth-order (g_{NL} and τ_{NL}) amplitudes of the local configuration or non-Gaussianity. The experimental focus is the skewness (two-to-one) and kurtosis (two-to-two and three-to-one) power spectra from weighted maps. In adition to a measurement of τ_{NL} and g_{NL} with WMAP 5-year data, our study provides the first forecasts for future constraints on g_{NL}. We describe how these statistics can be corrected for the mask and cut-sky through a window function, bypassing the need to compute linear terms that were introduced for the previous-generation non-Gaussianity statistics, such as the skewness estimator. We discus the ratio A_{NL} = τ_{NL}/(6f_{NL}/5)^2 as an additional test of single-field inflationary models and discuss the physical significance of each statistic. Using these estimators with WMAP 5-Year V+W-band data out to l_{max}=600 we constrain the cubic order non-Gaussianity parameters τ_{NL}, and g_{NL} and find -7.4 < g_{NL}/10^5 < 8.2 and -0.6 < τ_{NL}/10^4 < 3.3 improving the previous COBE-based limit on τ_{NL} < 10^8 nearly four orders of magnitude with WMAP.

Scale dependence of local f_NL

We consider possible scale-dependence of the non-linearity parameter f_NL in local and quasi-local models of non-Gaussian primordial density perturbations. In the simplest model where the primordial perturbations are a quadratic local function of a single Gaussian field then f_NL is scale-independent by construction. However scale-dependence can arise due to either a local function of more than one Gaussian field, or due to non-linear evolution of modes after horizon-exit during inflation. We show that the scale dependence of f_NL is typically first order in slow-roll. For some models this may be observable with experiments such as Planck provided that f_NL is close to the current observational bounds.

Review of local non-Gaussianity from multi-field inflation

We review models which generate a large non-Gaussianity of the local form. We first briefly consider three models which generate the non-Gaussianity either at or after the end of inflation; the curvaton scenario, modulated (p)reheating and an inhomogeneous end of inflation. We then focus on ways of generating the non-Gaussianity during inflation. We derive general conditions which a product or sum separable potential must satisfy in order to generate a large local bispectrum during slow-roll inflation. As an application we consider two-field hybrid inflation. We then derive a formalism not based on slow roll which can be applied to models in which the slow-roll parameters become large before inflation ends. An exactly soluble two-field model is given in which this happens. Finally we also consider further non-Gaussian observables; a scale dependence of f_NL and the trispectrum.

Large non-Gaussianity from two-component hybrid inflation

We study the generation of non-Gaussianity in models of hybrid inflation with two inflaton fields, (2-brid inflation). We analyse the region in the parameter and the initial condition space where a large non-Gaussianity may be generated during slow-roll inflation which is generally characterised by a large f_NL, tau_NL and a small g_NL. For certain parameter values we can satisfy tau_NL>>f_NL^2. The bispectrum is of the local type but may have a significant scale dependence. We show that the loop corrections to the power spectrum and bispectrum are suppressed during inflation, if one assume that the fields follow a classical background trajectory. We also include the effect of the waterfall field, which can lead to a significant change in the observables after the waterfall field is destabilised, depending on the couplings between the waterfall and inflaton fields.

Constraints on generating the primordial curvature perturbation and non-Gaussianity from instant preheating

We analyse models of inflation in which isocurvature perturbations present during inflation are converted into the primordial curvature perturbation during instant preheating. This can be due to an asymmetry between the fields present either during inflation or during preheating. We consider all the constraints that the model must satisfy in order to be theoretically valid and to satisfy observations. We show that the constraints are very tight in all of the models proposed and special initial conditions are required for the models to work. In the case where the symmetry is strongly broken during inflation the non-Gaussianity parameter f_NL is generally large and negative.

Conditions for large non-Gaussianity in two-field slow-roll inflation

We study the level of primordial non-Gaussianity in slow-roll two-field inflation. Using an analytic formula for the nonlinear parameter f_nl in the case of a sum or product separable potential, we find that it is possible to generate significant non-Gaussianity even during slow-roll inflation with Gaussian perturbations at Hubble exit. In this paper we give the general conditions to obtain large non-Gaussianity and calculate the level of fine-tuning required to obtain this. We present explicit models in which the non-Gaussianity at the end of inflation can exceed the current observational bound of |f_nl|<100.

Diagrammatic approach to non-Gaussianity from inflation

We present Feynman type diagrams for calculating the n-point function of the primordial curvature perturbation in terms of scalar field perturbations during inflation. The diagrams can be used to evaluate the corresponding terms in the n-point function at tree level or any required loop level. Rules are presented for drawing the diagrams and writing down the corresponding terms in real space and Fourier space. We show that vertices can be renormalised to automatically account for diagrams with dressed vertices. We apply these rules to calculate the primordial power spectrum up to two loops, the bispectrum including loop corrections, and the trispectrum.

Curvature and isocurvature perturbations from two-field inflation in a slow-roll expansion

We calculate the power spectra of primordial curvature and isocurvature perturbations from a general two field inflation model at next-to-leading order correction in a slow-roll expansion. In particular we calculate the spectral indices to second order in slow-roll parameters. We show that the cross-correlation of the curvature and isocurvature perturbations at the time of Hubble-exit during inflation is non-zero at first-order in slow-roll parameters. We apply our results to different classes of inflation, including inflaton and curvaton scenarios. The spectrum of primordial gravitational waves, curvature and isocurvature perturbations obey generalised consistency relations in two-field inflation models. We give the first two consistency relations in an infinite hierarchy.

Primordial trispectrum from inflation

We use the delta N-formalism to describe the leading order contributions to the primordial power spectrum, bispectrum and trispectrum in multiple-field models of inflation at leading order in a perturbative expansion. In slow-roll models where the initial field fluctuations at Hubble-exit are nearly Gaussian, any detectable non-Gaussianity is expected to come from super-Hubble evolution. We show that the contribution to the primordial trispectrum can be described by two non-linearity parameters, tau_{NL} and g_{NL}, which are dependent upon the second and third derivatives of the local expansion with respect to the field values during inflation.

Scale-invariant Perturbations from Chaotic Inflation

Vacuum fluctuations in the inflaton field driving chaotic inflation with a quadratic potential give a red spectrum of primordial density perturbations, n=0.97. However angular fluctuations in an O(N)-symmetric quadratic potential have a very nearly scale-invariant spectrum, n=0.9998. We investigate the possibility that these isocurvature field perturbations could give the dominant contribution to the primordial density perturbation after inflation.
