Characterizing Varieties Using Birational Transformations

Suppose $X$ is an irreducible complex variety. We show that when $X$ is ruled, the group of birational transformations $Bir(X)$, as a group, determines $X$ up to birational transformations and automorphisms of the base field. In contrast, we demonstrate that this same property never holds for non-uniruled varieties.

Asymptotically rigid mapping class groups III: Presentations and isomorphisms

This article is dedicated to the computation of an explicit presentation of some asymptotically rigid mapping class groups, namely the braided Higman-Thompson groups. To do so, we use the action of these groups on the spine complex, a simply connected cube complex constructed by the authors in a previous work. In particular, this allows to compute the abelianisations of these groups. With these new algebraic invariants we can handle many new cases of the isomorphism problem for asymptotically rigid mapping class groups of trees.

Representations of finite subgroups of Cremona groups

The Cremona group of rank n over a field k is the group of birational automorphisms of the n-dimensional projective space over the field k. We study the minimal dimension such that all finite subgroups of the Cremona group have a faithful representation of that dimension over the same field. We find the exact value for rank 1 and 2 over all fields. We prove that the value is infinite for all fields of positive characteristic and rank greater than one. For many fields of characteristic 0, which include number fields and the complex field, we show that the value is finite for all ranks. Finally, for all fields of characteristic 0, we prove that the dimension is bounded below by a function that is exponential in the rank.

Group Theoretical Characterizations of Rationality

Let X be an irreducible variety and Bir(X) its group of birational transformations. We show that the group structure of Bir(X) determines whether X is rational and whether X is ruled. Additionally, we prove that any Borel subgroup of Bir(X) has derived length at most twice the dimension of X, with equality occurring if and only if X is rational and the Borel subgroup is standard. We also provide examples of non-standard Borel subgroups of Bir(P^n) and Aut(A^n), thereby resolving conjectures by Popov and Furter-Poloni.

The Structure of Algebraic Families of Birational Transformations

We give a description of the algebraic families of birational transformations of an algebraic variety X. As an application, we show that the morphisms to Bir(X) given by algebraic families satisfy a Chevalley type result and a certain fibre-dimension formula. Moreover, we show that the algebraic subgroups of Bir(X) are exactly the closed finite-dimensional subgroups with finitely many components. We also study algebraic families of birational transformations preserving a fibration. This builds on previous work of Blanc-Furter, Hanamura, and Ramanujam.

Asymptotically rigid mapping class groups II: strand diagrams and nonpositive curvature

In this article, we introduce a new family of groups, called Chambord groups and constructed from braided strand diagrams associated to specific semigroup presentations. It includes the asymptotically rigid mapping class groups previously studied by the authors such as the braided Higman-Thompson groups and the braided Houghton groups. Our main result shows that polycyclic subgroups in Chambord groups are virtually abelian and undistorted.

Cremona groups over finite fields, Neretin groups, and non-positively curved cube complexes

We show that plane Cremona groups over finite fields embed as dense subgroups into Neretin groups, i.e. groups of almost automorphisms of rooted trees. We also show that if the finite base field has even characteristic and contains at least 4 elements, then the permutations induced by birational transformations on rational points of regular projective surfaces are even. In a second part, we construct explicit locally compact CAT(0) cube complexes, on which Neretin groups act properly. This allows us to recover in a unified way various results on Neretin groups such as that they are of type $F_{\infty}$. We also prove a new fixed-point theorem for CAT(0) cube complexes without infinite cubes and use it to deduce a regularisation theorem for plane Cremona groups over finite fields.

Characterization of affine surfaces with a torus action by their automorphism groups

In this paper we prove that if two normal affine surfaces $S$ and $S'$ have isomorphic automorphism groups, then every connected algebraic group acting regularly and faithfully on $S$ acts also regularly and faithfully on $S'$. Moreover, if $S$ is non-toric, we show that the dynamical type of a 1-torus action is preserved in presence of an additive group action. We also show that complex affine toric surfaces are determined by the abstract group structure of their regular automorphism groups in the category of complex normal affine surfaces using properties of the Cremona group. As a generalization to arbitrary dimensions, we show that complex affine toric varieties, with the exception of the algebraic torus, are uniquely determined in the category of complex affine normal varieties by their automorphism groups seen as ind-groups.

Actions of Cremona groups on CAT(0) cube complexes

For each d we construct CAT(0) cube complexes on which Cremona groups rank d act by isometries. From these actions we deduce new and old group theoretical and dynamical results about Cremona groups. In particular, we study the dynamical behaviour of the irreducible components of exceptional loci, we prove regularization theorems, we find new constraints on the degree growth for non-regularizable birational transformations, and we show that the centralizer of certain birational transformations is small.

Asymptotically rigid mapping class groups I: Finiteness properties of braided Thompson's and Houghton's groups

This article is dedicated to the study of asymptotically rigid mapping class groups of infinitely-punctured surfaces obtained by thickening planar trees. Such groups include the braided Ptolemy-Thompson groups $T^\sharp,T^\ast$ introduced by Funar and Kapoudjian, and the braided Houghton groups $\mathrm{br}H_n$ introduced by Degenhardt. We present an elementary construction of a contractible cube complex, on which these groups act with cube-stabilisers isomorphic to finite extensions of braid groups. As an application, we prove Funar-Kapoudjian's and Degenhardt's conjectures by showing that $T^\sharp,T^\ast$ are of type $F_\infty$ and that $\mathrm{br}H_n$ is of type $F_{n-1}$ but not of type $F_n$.

Continuous automorphisms of Cremona groups

We show that if a group automorphism of a Cremona group of arbitrary rank is also a homeomorphism with respect to either the Zariski or the Euclidean topology, then it is inner up to a field automorphism of the base-field. Moreover, we show that a similar result holds if we consider groups of polynomial automorphisms of affine spaces instead of Cremona groups.

Simple groups of birational transformations in dimension two

We classify simple groups that act by birational transformations on compact complex Kähler surfaces. Moreover, we show that every finitely generated simple group that acts non-trivially by birational transformations on a projective surface over an arbitrary field is finite.

Subgroups of elliptic elements of the Cremona group

The Cremona group is the group of birational transformations of the complex projective plane. In this paper we classify its subgroups that consist only of elliptic elements using elementary model theory. This yields in particular a description of the structure of torsion subgroups. As an appliction, we prove the Tits alternative for arbitrary subgroups of the Cremona group, generalizing a result of Cantat. We also describe solvable subgroups of the Cremona group and their derived length, refining results from Déserti.

A new presentation of the plane Cremona group

We give a presentation of the plane Cremona group over an algebraically closed field with respect to the generators given by the Theorem of Noether and Castelnuovo. This presentation is particularly simple and can be used for explicit calculations.

Remarks on the degree growth of birational transformations

We look at sequences of positive integers that can be realized as degree sequences of iterates of rational dominant maps of smooth projective varieties over arbitrary fields. New constraints on the degree growth of endomorphisms of the affine space and examples of degree sequences are displayed. We also show that the set of all degree sequences of rational maps is countable; this generalizes a result of Bonifant and Fornaess.
