N-body simulations with generic non-Gaussian initial conditions I: Power Spectrum and halo mass function

We address the issue of setting up generic non-Gaussian initial conditions for N-body simulations. We consider inflationary-motivated primordial non-Gaussianity where the perturbations in the Bardeen potential are given by a dominant Gaussian part plus a non-Gaussian part specified by its bispectrum. The approach we explore here is suitable for any bispectrum, i.e. it does not have to be of the so-called separable or factorizable form. The procedure of generating a non-Gaussian field with a given bispectrum (and a given power spectrum for the Gaussian component) is not univocal, and care must be taken so that higher-order corrections do not leave a too large signature on the power spectrum. This is so far a limiting factor of our approach. We then run N-body simulations for the most popular inflationary-motivated non-Gaussian shapes. The halo mass function and the non-linear power spectrum agree with theoretical analytical approximations proposed in the literature, even if they were so far developed and tested only for a particular shape (the local one). We plan to make the simulations outputs available to the community via the non-Gaussian simulations comparison project web site http://icc.ub.edu/~liciaverde/NGSCP.html.

Direct measurement of shear-induced cross-correlations of Brownian motion

Shear-induced cross-correlations of particle fluctuations perpendicular and along stream-lines are investigated experimentally and theoretically. Direct measurements of the Brownian motion of micron-sized beads, held by optical tweezers in a shear-flow cell, show a strong time-asymmetry in the cross-correlation, which is caused by the non-normal amplification of fluctuations. Complementary measurements on the single particle probability distribution substantiate this behavior and both results are consistent with a Langevin model. In addition, a shear-induced anti-correlation between orthogonal random-displacements of two trapped and hydrodynamically interacting particles is detected, having one or two extrema in time, depending on the positions of the particles.

The blistering of a viscoelastic filament of a droplet of saliva

A fluid dynamics video of the break up of a droplet of saliva is shown. First a viscoelastic filament is formed and than the blistering of this filament is shown. Finally, a flow induced phase separation takes place nanometer sized solid fiber remains that consist out of the biopolymers.

Maximal integral simplices with no interior integer points

In this paper, we consider integral maximal lattice-free simplices. Such simplices have integer vertices and contain integer points in the relative interior of each of their facets, but no integer point is allowed in the full interior. In dimension three, we show that any integral maximal lattice-free simplex is equivalent to one of seven simplices up to unimodular transformation. For higher dimensions, we demonstrate that the set of integral maximal lattice-free simplices with vertices lying on the coordinate axes is finite. This gives rise to a conjecture that the total number of integral maximal lattice-free simplices is finite for any dimension.

On the starting redshift for cosmological simulations: Focusing on halo properties

We systematically study the effects of varying the starting redshift z_i for cosmological simulations in the highly non-linear regime. Our primary focus lies with the (individual) properties of dark matter halos -- namely the mass, spin, triaxiality, and concentration -- where we find that even substantial variations in z_i leave only a small imprint, at least for the probed mass range M \in [10^{10}, 10^{13}] Msun/h and when investigated at redshift z=0. We further compare simulations started by using the standard Zel'dovich approximation to runs based upon initial conditions produced with second order Lagrangian perturbation theory. Here we observe the same phenomenon, i.e. that differences in the studied (internal) properties of dark matter haloes are practically undetectable. These findings are (for the probed mass range) in agreement with other work in the literature. We therefore conclude that the commonly used technique for setting up cosmological simulations leads to stable results at redshift z=0 for the mass, the spin parameter, the triaxiality, and the concentration of dark matter haloes.

Constraining dark energy via baryon acoustic oscillations in the (an)isotropic light-cone power spectrum

The measurement of the scale of the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the galaxy power spectrum as a function of redshift is a promising method to constrain the equation-of-state parameter of the dark energy w. To measure the scale of the BAO precisely, a substantial volume of space must be surveyed. We test whether light-cone effects are important and whether the scaling relations used to compensate for an incorrect reference cosmology are in this case sufficiently accurate. We investigate the degeneracies in the cosmological parameters and the benefits of using the two-dimensional anisotropic power spectrum. Finally, we estimate the uncertainty with which w can be measured by proposed surveys at redshifts of about z=3 and z=1, respectively. In the simulated survey we find that light-cone effects are small and that the simple scaling relations used to correct for the cosmological distortion work fairly well even for large survey volumes. The analysis of the two-dimensional anisotropic power spectra enables an independent determination to be made of the apparent scale of the BAO, perpendicular and parallel to the line of sight. This is essential for two-parameter w-models, such as the redshift-dependent dark energy model w=w_0+(1-a)w_a. Using Planck priors for the matter and baryon density and Delta(H_0)=5% for the Hubble constant, we estimate that the BAO measurements of future surveys around z=3 and z=1 will be able to constrain, independently of other cosmological probes, a constant w to ~ 12% and ~ 11% (68% c.l.), respectively.

Dynamics of polymers in elongational flow investigated by inelastic neutron scattering

The nanoscale fluctuation dynamics of semi dilute high molecular weight polymer solutions of Polyethylenoxide (PEO) in D2O under non-equilibrium flow conditions were studied by the neutron spin-echo technique. The sample cell was in contraction flow geometry and provided a pressure driven flow with a high elongational component that stretched the polymers most efficiently. The experiments suggest that the mobility on the scale of a few monomers, comparable to the Kuhn segment length, becomes highly anisotropic and is enhanced perpendicular to the flow direction. Diffraction data show a weak structural correlation along the chains on a length scale of about 17 Angstroems, which might be related to the Kuhn length in this system.

Wet Sand flows better than dry sand

We investigated the yield stress and the apparent viscosity of sand with and without small amounts of liquid. By pushing the sand through a tube with an enforced Poiseuille like profile we minimize the effect of avalanches and shear localization. We find that the system starts to flow when a critical shear of the order of one particle diameter is exceeded. In contrast to common believe, we observe that the resistance against the flow of wet sand is much smaller than that of dry sand. For the dissipative flow we propose a non-equilibrium state equation for granular fluids.

Faraday Instability in a Surface-Frozen Liquid

Faraday surface instability measurements of the critical acceleration, a_c, and wavenumber, k_c, for standing surface waves on a tetracosanol (C_24H_50) melt exhibit abrupt changes at T_s=54degC above the bulk freezing temperature. The measured variations of a_c and k_c vs. temperature and driving frequency are accounted for quantitatively by a hydrodynamic model, revealing a change from a free-slip surface flow, generic for a free liquid surface (T>T_s), to a surface-pinned, no-slip flow, characteristic of a flow near a wetted solid wall (T < T_s). The change at T_s is traced to the onset of surface freezing, where the steep velocity gradient in the surface-pinned flow significantly increases the viscous dissipation near the surface.

Turbulent Drag Reduction of polyelectrolyte (DNA) solutions: relation with the elongational viscosity

We report measurements of turbulent drag reduction of two different polyelectrolyte solutions: DNA and hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide. Changing the salt concentration in the solutions allows us to change the flexibility of the polymer chains. For both polymers the amount of drag reduction was found to increase with the flexibility. Rheological studies reveal that the elongational viscosity of the solutions increases simultaneously. Hence we conclude that the elongational viscosity is the pertinent macroscopic quantity to describe the ability of a polymer to cause turbulent drag reduction.

Pattern formation at the bi-critical point of the Faraday instability

We present measurements on parametrically driven surface waves (Faraday waves) performed in the vicinity of a bi-critical point in parameter space, where modes with harmonic and subharmonic time dependence interact. The primary patterns are squares in the subharmonic and hexagons in the harmonic regime. If the primary instability is harmonic we observe a hysteretic secondary transition from hexagons to squares without a perceptible variation of the fundamental wavelength. The transition is understood in terms of a set of coupled Landau equations and related to other canonical examples of phase transitions in nonlinear dissipative systems. Moreover, the subharmonic-harmonic mode competition gives rise to a variety of new superlattice states. These structures are interpreted as mediator modes involved in the transition between patterns of fourfold and sixfold rotational symmetry.
