On surface energies in scaling laws for singular perturbation problems for martensitic phase transitions

The objective of this article is to compare different surface energies for multi-well singular perturbation problems associated with martensitic phase transformations involving higher order laminates. We deduce scaling laws in the singular perturbation parameter which are robust in the choice of the surface energy (e.g., diffuse, sharp, an interpolation thereof or discrete). Furthermore, we show that these scaling laws do not require the presence of isotropic surface energies but that generically also highly anisotropic surface energies yield the same scaling results. More precisely, the presence of essentially generic partial directional derivatives in the regularization terms suffices to produce the same scaling behaviour as in the isotropic setting. The only sensitive directional dependences are directly linked to the lamination directions of the well structure -- and even for these only the ``inner-most'' lamination direction is of significance in determining the scaling law. In view of experimental applications, this shows that also for higher-order laminates, the precise structure of the surface energies -- which is often very difficult to determine experimentally -- does not have a crucial impact on the scaling behaviour of the investigated structures but only enters when considering finer properties.

Large norm inflation of the current in the viscous, non-resistive magnetohydrodynamics equations

We consider the ideally conducting, viscous magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations in two dimensions. Specifically, we study the nonlinear dynamics near a combination of Couette flow and a constant magnetic field in a periodic infinite channel. In contrast to the Navier-Stokes equations this system is shown to exhibit algebraic instability and large norm inflation of the magnetic current on non-perturbative time scales.

On a $T_3$-Structure in Geometrically Linearized Elasticity: Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis and Numerical Simulations

We study the rigidity properties of the $T_3$-structure for the symmetrized gradient from \cite{BFJK94} qualitatively, quantitatively and numerically. More precisely, we complement the flexibility result for approximate solutions of the associated differential inclusion which was deduced in \cite{BFJK94} by a rigidity result on the level of exact solutions and by a quantitative rigidity estimate and scaling result. The $T_3$-structure for the symmetrized gradient from \cite{BFJK94} can hence be regarded as a symmetrized gradient analogue of the Tartar square for the gradient. As such a structure cannot exist in $\mathbb{R}^{2\times 2}_{sym}$ the example from \cite{BFJK94} is in this sense minimal. We complement our theoretical findings with numerical simulations of the resulting microstructure.

On the Sobolev Stability Threshold for the 2D MHD Equations with Horizontal Magnetic Dissipation

In this article we consider the stability threshold of the 2D magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations near a combination of Couette flow and large constant magnetic field. We study the partial dissipation regime with full viscous and only horizontal magnetic dissipation. In particular, we show that this regime behaves qualitatively differently than both the fully dissipative and the non-resistive setting.

On nonlinear Landau damping and Gevrey regularity

In this article we study the problem of nonlinear Landau damping for the Vlasov-Poisson equations on the torus. As our main result we show that for perturbations initially of size $\epsilon>0$ and time intervals $(0,\epsilon^{-N})$ one obtains nonlinear stability in regularity classes larger than Gevrey $3$, uniformly in $\epsilon$. As a complementary result we construct families of Sobolev regular initial data which exhibit nonlinear Landau damping. Our proof is based on the methods of Grenier, Nguyen and Rodnianski.

On Echoes in Magnetohydrodynamics with Magnetic Dissipation

We study the long time asymptotic behavior of the inviscid magnetohydrodynamic equations with magnetic dissipation near a combination of Couette flow and a constant magnetic field. Here we show that there exist nearby explicit global in time low frequency solutions, which we call waves. Moreover, the linearized problem around these waves exhibits resonances under high frequency perturbations, called echoes, which result in norm inflation Gevrey regularity and infinite time blow-up in Sobolev regularity.

On stability estimates for the inviscid Boussinesq equations

We consider the (in)stability problem of the inviscid 2D Boussinesq equations near a combination of a shear flow $v=(y,0)$ and a stratified temperature $θ=αy$ with $α>\frac{1}{4}$. We show that for any $ε>0$ there exist non-trivial explicit solutions, which are initially perturbations of size $ε$, and grow to size $1$ on a time scale $ε^{-2}$. Moreover, the (simplified) linearized problem around these non-trivial states exhibits improved upper bounds on the possible size of norm inflation for frequencies larger and smaller than $ε^{-4}$.

On variable viscosity and enhanced dissipation

In this article we consider the 2D Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity depending on the vertical position. As our main result we establish linear enhanced dissipation near the non-affine stationary states replacing Couette flow. Moreover it turns out that the shear flow overcompensates for weakening viscosity: decreasing viscosity leads to stronger enhanced dissipation and increasing viscosity leads to weaker dissipation than in the constant viscosity case.

On echo chains in the linearized Boussinesq equations around traveling waves

We consider the 2D Boussinesq equations with viscous but without thermal dissipation and observe that in any neighborhood of Couette flow and hydrostatic balance (with respect to local norms) there are time-dependent traveling wave solutions of the form $ω=-1+f(t)\cos(x-ty)$, $θ=αy + g(t)\sin(x-ty)$. As our main result we show that the linearized equations around these waves for $α=0$ exhibit echo chains and norm inflation despite viscous dissipation of the velocity. Furthermore, we construct initial data in a critical Gevrey 3 class, for which temperature and vorticity diverge to infinity in Sobolev regularity as $t\rightarrow \infty$ but for which the velocity still converges.

On the Boussinesq equations with non-monotone temperature profiles

In this article we consider the asymptotic stability of the two-dimensional Boussinesq equations with partial dissipation near a combination of Couette flow and temperature profiles $T(y)$. As a first main result we show that if $T'$ is of size at most $ν^{1/3}$ in a suitable norm, then the linearized Boussinesq equations with only vertical dissipation of the velocity but not of the temperature are stable. Thus, mixing enhanced dissipation can suppress Rayleigh-Bénard instability in this linearized case. We further show that these results extend to the (forced) nonlinear equations with vertical dissipation in both temperature and velocity.

On a probabilistic model for martensitic avalanches incorporating mechanical compatibility

Building on the work in \cite{BCH15,CH18,TIVP17}, in this article we propose and study a simple, geometrically constrained, probabilistic algorithm geared towards capturing some aspects of the nucleation in shape-memory alloys. As a main novelty with respect to the algorithms in \cite{BCH15,CH18,TIVP17} we include \emph{mechanical compatibility}. The mechanical compatibility here is guaranteed by using \emph{convex integration building blocks} in the nucleation steps. We analytically investigate the algorithm's convergence and the solutions' regularity, viewing the latter as a measure for the fractality of the resulting microstructure. We complement our analysis with a numerical implemenation of the scheme and compare it to the numerical results in \cite{BCH15,CH18,TIVP17}.

On Enhanced Dissipation for the Boussinesq Equations

In this article we consider the stability and damping problem for the 2D Boussinesq equations with partial dissipation near a two parameter family of stationary solutions which includes Couette flow and hydrostatic balance. In the first part we show that for the linearized problem in an infinite periodic channel the evolution is asymptotically stable if any diffusion coefficient is non-zero. In particular, this imposes weaker conditions than for example vertical diffusion. Furthermore, we study the interaction of shear flow, hydrostatic balance and partial dissipation. In a second part we adapt the methods used by Bedrossian, Vicol and Wang in the Navier-Stokes problem and combine them with cancellation properties of the Boussinesq equations to establish small data stability and enhanced dissipation results for the nonlinear Boussinesq problem with full dissipation.

On Echo Chains in Landau damping: Self-similar Solutions and Gevrey 3 as a Linear Stability Threshold

We show that the linearized Vlasov-Poisson equations around self-similar non-homogeneous states near zero contain the full plasma echo mechanism, yielding Gevrey 3 as a critical stability class. Moreover, here Landau damping may persist despite blow-up: We construct a critical Gevrey regularity class in which the force field converges in $L^2$. Thus, on the one hand, the physical phenomenon of Landau damping holds. On the other hand, the density diverges to infinity in Sobolev regularity. Hence, ``strong damping'' cannot hold.

On the Smallness Condition in Linear Inviscid Damping: Monotonicity and Resonance Chains

We consider the linearized Euler equations around a smooth, bilipschitz shear profile $U(y)$ on $\mathbb{T}_L \times \mathbb{R}$. We construct an explicit flow which exhibits linear inviscid damping for $L$ sufficiently small, but for which damping fails if $L$ is large. In particular, similar to the instability results for convex profiles for a shear flow being bilipschitz is not sufficient for linear inviscid damping to hold. Instead of an eigenvalue-based argument the underlying mechanism here is shown to be based on a new cascade of resonances moving to higher and higher frequencies in $y$, which is distinct from the echo chain mechanism in the nonlinear problem.

Linear Inviscid Damping in Sobolev and Gevrey Spaces

In a recent article Jia established linear inviscid damping in Gevrey regularity for compactly supported Gevrey regular shear flows in a finite channel, which is of great interest in view of existing nonlinear results. In this article we provide an alternative very short proof of stability in Gevrey regularity as a consequence of stability in high Sobolev regularity. Here, we consider both the setting of a finite channel with compactly supported perturbations and of an infinite channel without this restriction. Furthermore, we consider the setting where perturbations vanish only of finite order.

Echo Chains as a Linear Mechanism: Norm Inflation, Modified Exponents and Asymptotics

In this article we show that the Euler equations, when linearized around a low frequency perturbation to Couette flow, exhibit norm inflation in Gevrey-type spaces as time tends to infinity. Thus, echo chains are shown to be a (secondary) linear instability mechanism. Furthermore, we develop a more precise analysis of cancellations in the resonance mechanism, which yields a modified exponent in the high frequency regime. In addition it allows us to remove a logarithmic constraint on the perturbations present in prior works by Bedrossian, Deng and Masmoudi and to construct solutions which are initially in a Gevrey class for which the velocity asymptotically converges in Sobolev regularity but diverges in Gevrey regularity.

Exact constructions in the (non-linear) planar theory of elasticity: From elastic crystals to nematic elastomers

In this article we deduce necessary and sufficient conditions for the presence of `Conti-type', highly symmetric, exactly-stress free constructions in the geometrically non-linear, planar $n$-well problem, generalising results of [CKZ17]. Passing to the limit $n\rightarrow \infty$, this allows us to treat solid crystals and nematic elastomer differential inclusions simultaneously. In particular, we recover and generalise (non-linear) planar tripole star type deformations which were experimentally observed in [MA80,MA80a,KK91]. Further we discuss the corresponding geometrically linearised problem.

On the forced Euler and Navier-Stokes equations: Linear damping and modified scattering

We study the asymptotic behavior of the forced linear Euler and nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations close to Couette flow in a periodic channel. As our main result we show that for smooth time-periodic forcing linear inviscid damping persists, i.e. the velocity field (weakly) asymptotically converges. However, stability and scattering to the transport problem fail in $H^{s}, s>-1$. We further show that this behavior is consistent with the nonlinear Euler equations and that a similar result also holds for the nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations. Hence, these results provide an indication that nonlinear inviscid damping may still hold in Sobolev regularity in the above sense despite the Gevrey regularity instability results of [Deng-Masmoudi 2018].
