Infinite quantum twisting at the Cauchy horizon of rotating black holes

We present a numerical calculation of the expectation value of the quantum angular-momentum current flux density for a scalar field in the Unruh state near the inner horizon of a Kerr-de Sitter black hole. Our results indicate that this flux diverges as $V_-^{-1}$ in a suitable Kruskal coordinate such that $V_-=0$ at the inner horizon. Depending on the parameter values of the scalar field and black hole that we consider, and depending on the polar angle (latitude), this flux can have different signs. In the near extremal cases considered, the angle average of the expectation value of the quantum angular momentum current flux is of the opposite sign as the angular momentum of the background itself, suggesting that, in the cases considered, quantum effects tend to decrease the total angular momentum of the spheres away from the extremal value. We also numerically calculate the energy flux component, which provides the leading order divergence of the quantum stress energy tensor, dominant over the classical stress energy tensor, at the inner horizon. Taking our expectation value of the quantum stress tensor as the source in the semiclassical Einstein equation, our analysis suggests that the spheres approaching the inner horizon can undergo an infinite twisting due to quantum effects along latitudes separating regions of infinite expansion and contraction.

Long-range correlations of the stress tensor near the Cauchy horizon

We show that the stress tensor of a real scalar quantum field on Reissner-Nordstr{\"o}m-de Sitter spacetime exhibits correlations over macroscopic distances near the Cauchy horizon. These diverge as the Cauchy horizon is approached and are universal, i.e., state-independent. This signals a breakdown of the semi-classical approximation near the Cauchy horizon. We also investigate the effect of turning on a charge of the scalar field and consider the correlation of the stress tensor between the two poles of the Cauchy horizon of Kerr-de Sitter spacetime.

Universality of the quantum energy flux at the inner horizon of asymptotically de Sitter black holes

Recently, it was found that the energy flux of a free scalar quantum field on a Reissner-Nordstr\"om-de Sitter spacetime has a quadratic divergence towards the inner horizon of the black hole. Moreover, the leading divergence was found to be state independent as long as the spectral gap of the wave equation on the spacetime is sufficiently large. In this work, we show that the latter result can be extended to all subextremal Reissner-Nordstr\"om-de Sitter and subextremal Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes with a positive spectral gap.

Construction of the Unruh State for a Real Scalar Field on the Kerr-de Sitter Spacetime

The study of physical effects of quatum fields in black hole spacetimes, which is related to questions such as the validity of the strong cosmic censorship conjecture, requires a Hadamard state describing the physical situation. Here, we consider the theory of a free scalar field on a Kerr-de Sitter spacetime, focussing on spacetimes with sufficiently small angular momentum of the black hole and sufficiently small cosmological constant. We demonstrate that an extension of the Unruh state, which describes the expected late-time behaviour in spherically symmetric gravitational collapse, can be rigorously constructed for the free scalar field on such Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes. In addition, we show that this extension of the Unruh state is a Hadamard state in the black hole exterior and in the black hole interior up to the inner horizon. This provides a physically motivated Hadamard state for the study of free scalar fields in rotating black hole spacetimes.

Quantum (dis)charge of black hole interiors

We analyze the "vacuum" polarization induced by a quantum charged scalar field near the inner horizon of a charged (Reissner-Nordstr\"om-de Sitter) black hole in quantum states that start out as regular states near an initial Cauchy surface. Contrary to the outer (i.e. event-) horizon, where polarization effects lead to a discharge, we find that near an inner horizon, the transversal component of the expected current density can have either sign depending on the black hole and field parameters. Thus, the inner horizon can be charged or discharged. But we find that it is always discharged close to extremality thus driving the black hole interior away from this critical point. Furthermore, we find that quantum effects dominate in that the strength of the blow up of the quantum current at the inner horizon is state-independent and stronger than that of the current of a classical solution.

Quantum stress tensor at the Cauchy horizon of Reissner-Nordstr\"om-deSitter spacetime

The strong cosmic censorship conjecture proposes that starting from generic initial data on some Cauchy surface, the solutions of the Einstein equation should not be extendable across the boundary of the domain of dependence of that surface. For the case of the Reissner-Nordstr\"om-de Sitter spacetime this means that any perturbation should blow up sufficiently badly when approaching this boundary, called the Cauchy horizon. However, recent results indicate that for highly charged black holes classical scalar perturbations allow for a violation of strong cosmic censorship. In a recent paper arXiv:1912.06047, two of us have argued that quantum effects will restore censorship for generic values of the black hole parameters. But, due to practical limitations, the precise form of the divergence was only calculated for a small number of parameters. Here we perform a thorough parameter scan using an alternative, more efficient semi-analytic method. Our analysis confirms arXiv:1912.06047 in the sense that the quantum stress tensor is found to diverge badly generically. However, the sign of the divergence can be changed by changing the mass of the field or the spacetime parameters, leading to a drastically different type of singularity on the Cauchy horizon.

Radiative neutrino masses and successful $SU(5)$ unification

Minimal $SU(5)$ Grand Unified models predict massless neutrinos and struggle to achieve gauge coupling unification compatible with the observed lower limit on the proton lifetime. Both of these issues can be resolved by embedding minimal radiative neutrino mass models into $SU(5)$. We systematically analyze the possible ways to realize radiative neutrino mass generation in $SU(5)$ and provide a list of the minimal models. We find various models that have not been considered in the literature and demonstrate the compatibility of radiative neutrino masses with gauge coupling unification and proton decay for a new class of models with vector-like fermions.

Minimal Radiative Neutrino Masses

We conduct a systematic search for neutrino mass models which only radiatively produce the dimension-5 Weinberg operator. We thereby do not allow for additional symmetries beyond the Standard Model gauge symmetry and we restrict ourselves to minimal models. We also include stable fractionally charged and coloured particles in our search. Additionally, we proof that there is a unique model with three new fermionic representations where no new scalars are required to generate neutrino masses at loop level. This model further has a potential dark matter candidate and introduces a general mechanism for loop-suppression of the neutrino mass via a fermionic ladder
