On-demand analog space-time in superconducting networks: grey holes, dynamical instability and exceptional points

There has been considerable effort to mimic analog black holes and wormholes in solid state systems. Lattice realizations in particular present specific challenges. One of those is that event horizons in general have both white and black hole (grey hole) character, a feature guaranteed by the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem. We here explore and extend the capability of superconducting circuit hardware to implement on-demand spacetime geometries on lattices, combining nonreciprocity of gyrators with the nonlinearity of Josephson junctions. We demonstrate the possibility of the metric sharply changing within a single lattice point, thus entering a regime where the modulation of system parameters is "trans-Planckian", and the Hawking temperature ill-defined. Instead of regular Hawking radiation, we find an instability in the form of an exponential burst of charge and phase quantum fluctuations over short time scales - a robust signature even in the presence of an environment. Moreover, we present a loop-hole for the typical black/white hole ambiguity in lattice simulations: exceptional points in the dispersion relation allow for the creation of pure black (or white) hole horizons, at the expense of a radical change in the dynamics of the wormhole interior.

Emulating moiré materials with quasiperiodic circuit quantum electrodynamics

Topological bandstructures interfering with moiré superstructures give rise to a plethora of emergent phenomena, which are pivotal for correlated insulating and superconducting states of twisttronics materials. While quasiperiodicity was up to now a notion mostly reserved for solid-state materials and cold atoms, we here demonstrate the capacity of conventional superconducting circuits to emulate moiré physics in charge space. With two examples, we show that Hofstadter's butterfly and the magic-angle effect, are directly visible in spectroscopic transport measurements. Importantly, these features survive in the presence of harmonic trapping potentials due to parasitic linear capacitances. Our proposed platform benefits from unprecedented tuning capabilities, and opens the door to probe incommensurate physics in virtually any spatial dimension.

Compact description of quantum phase slip junctions

Quantum circuit theory is a powerful and ever-evolving tool to predict the dynamics of superconducting circuits. In its language, quantum phase slips (QPSs) are famously considered to be the exact dual to the Josephson effect. However, this duality renders the integration of QPS junctions into a unified theoretical framework very difficult, and as we show, gives rise to serious inconsistencies for different formalisms, and in some cases difficulties to include time-dependent flux driving. We propose to resolve these issues by reducing and compactifying the Hilbert space describing the QPS processes. Our treatment provides for the first time a unified description of the Aharonov-Bohm and Aharonov-Casher effects, properly defines the valid form of inductive interactions to an environment, and allows to account for recent insights on how to include electromotive forces. Finally, we show that the compactification is likewise important for correctly predicting the available computational space for qubit architectures involving QPS junctions.
