Dynamical Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions in Curie-Weiss Widom-Rowlinson models

We consider the Curie-Weiss Widom-Rowlinson model for particles with spins and holes, with a repulsion strength beta between particles of opposite spins. We provide a closed solution of the model, and investigate dynamical Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions for the time-evolved model under independent stochastic symmetric spin-flip dynamics. We show that, for sufficiently large beta after a transition time, continuously many bad empirical measures appear. These lie on (unions of) curves on the simplex whose time-evolution we describe.

Attractor properties of non-reversible dynamics w.r.t invariant Gibbs measures on the lattice

We consider stochastic dynamics of lattice systems with finite local state space, possibly at low temperature, and possibly non-reversible. We assume the additional regularity properties on the dynamics: a) There is at least one stationary measure which is a Gibbs measure for an absolutely summable potential Phi. b) Zero loss of relative entropy density under dynamics implies the Gibbs property with the same Phi. We prove results on the attractor property of the set of Gibbs measures for Phi: 1. The set of weak limit points of any trajectory of translation-invariant measures contains at least one Gibbs state for Phi. 2. We show that if all elements of a weakly convergent sequence of measures are Gibbs measures for a sequence of some translation-invariant summable potentials with uniform bound, then the limiting measure must be a Gibbs measure for Phi. 3. We give an extension of the second result to trajectories which are allowed to be non-Gibbs, but have a property of asymptotic smallness of discontinuities. An example for this situation is the time evolution from a low temperature Ising measure by weakly dependent spin flips.

Gibbs-non-Gibbs transition in the fuzzy Potts models with a Kac-type interaction: Closing the Ising gap

We complete the investigation of the Gibbs properties of the fuzzy Potts model on the d-dimensional torus with Kac interaction which was started by Jahnel and one of the authors. As our main result of the present paper, we extend the previous sharpness result of mean-field bounds to cover all possible cases of fuzzy transformations, allowing also for the occurrence of Ising classes. The closing of this previously left open Ising-gap involves an analytical argument showing uniqueness of minimizing profiles for certain non-homogeneous conditional variational problems.

The Widom-Rowlinson model under spin flip: Immediate loss and sharp recovery of quasilocality

We consider the continuum Widom-Rowlinson model under independent spin-flip dynamics and investigate whether and when the time-evolved point process has an (almost) quasilocal specification (Gibbs-property of the time-evolved measure). Our study provides a first analysis of a Gibbs-non-Gibbs transition for point particles in Euclidean space. We find a picture of loss and recovery, in which even more regularity is lost faster than it is for time-evolved spin models on lattices. We show immediate loss of quasilocality in the percolation regime, with full measure of discontinuity points for any specification. For the color-asymmetric percolating model, there is a transition from this non-a.s. quasilocal regime back to an everywhere Gibbsian regime. At the sharp reentrance time $t_G>0$ the model is a.s. quasilocal. For the color-symmetric model there is no reentrance. On the constructive side, for all $t>t_G$, we provide everywhere quasilocal specifications for the time-evolved measures and give precise exponential estimates on the influence of boundary conditions.

Non-robust phase transitions in the generalized clock model on trees

Pemantle and Steif provided a sharp threshold for the existence of a RPT (robust phase transition) for the continuous rotator model and the Potts model in terms of the branching number and the second eigenvalue of the transfer operator, where a robust phase transition is said to occur if an arbitrarily weak coupling with symmetry-breaking boundary conditions suffices to induce symmetry breaking in the bulk. They further showed that for the Potts model RPT occurs at a different threshold than PT (phase transition in the sense of multiple Gibbs measures), and conjectured that RPT and PT should occur at the same threshold in the continuous rotator model. We consider the class of 4- and 5-state rotation-invariant spin models with reflection symmetry on general trees which contains the Potts model and the clock model with scalarproduct-interaction as limiting cases. The clock model can be viewed as a particular discretization which is obtained from the classical rotator model on the continuous one-dimensional sphere. We analyze the transition between PT=RPT and PT is unequal to RPT, in terms of the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix of the model at the critical threshold value for the existence of RPT. The transition between the two regimes depends sensitively on the third largest eigenvalue.

Gradient Gibbs measures and fuzzy transformations on trees

We study Gibbsian models of unbounded integer-valued spins on trees which possess a symmetry under height-shift. We develop a theory relating boundary laws to gradient Gibbs measures, which applies also in cases where the corresponding Gibbs measures do not exist. Our results extend the classical theory of Zachary beyond the case of normalizable boundary laws, which implies existence of Gibbs measures, to periodic boundary laws. We provide a construction for classes of tree-automorphism invariant gradient Gibbs measures in terms of mixtures of pinned measures, whose marginals to infinite paths on the tree are random walks in a q-periodic environment. Here the mixture measure is the invariant measure of a finite state Markov chain which arises as a mod-q fuzzy transform, and which governs the correlation decay. The construction applies for example to SOS-models and discrete Gaussian models and delivers a large number of gradient Gibbs measures. We also discuss relations of certain gradient Gibbs measures to Potts and Ising models.

Continuous spin models on annealed generalized random graphs

We study Gibbs distributions of spins taking values in a general compact Polish space, interacting via a pair potential along the edges of a generalized random graph with a given asymptotic weight distribution $P$, obtained by annealing over the random graph distribution. First we prove a variational formula for the corresponding annealed pressure and provide criteria for absence of phase transitions in the general case. We furthermore study classes of models with second order phase transitions which include rotation-invariant models on spheres and models on intervals, and classify their critical exponents. We find critical exponents which are modified relative to the corresponding mean-field values when $P$ becomes too heavy-tailed, in which case they move continuously with the tail-exponent of $P$. For large classes of models they are the same as for the Ising model treated in \cite{DomGiaGibHofPri16}. On the other hand, we provide conditions under which the model is in a different universality class, and construct an explicit example of such a model on the interval.

A class of non-ergodic probabilistic cellular automata with unique invariant measure and quasi-periodic orbit

We provide an example of a discrete-time Markov process on the three-dimensional infinite integer lattice with Z_q-invariant Bernoulli-increments which has as local state space the cyclic group Z_q. We show that the system has a unique invariant measure, but remarkably possesses an invariant set of measures on which the dynamics is conjugate to an irrational rotation on the continuous sphere S^1. The update mechanism we construct is exponentially well localized on the lattice.

Gibbsian and non-Gibbsian properties of the generalized mean-field fuzzy Potts-model

We analyze the generalized mean-field q-state Potts model which is obtained by replacing the usual quadratic interaction function in the mean-field Hamiltonian by a higher power z. We first prove a generalization of the known limit result for the empirical magnetization vector of Ellis and Wang which shows that in the right parameter regime, the first-order phase-transition persists. Next we turn to the corresponding generalized fuzzy Potts model which is obtained by decomposing the set of the q possible spin-values into 1 < s < q classes and identifying the spins within these classes. In extension of earlier work which treats the quadratic model we prove the following: The fuzzy Potts model with interaction exponent bigger than four (respectively bigger than two and smaller or equal four) is non-Gibbs if and only if its inverse temperature is larger or equal than the critical inverse temperature of the corresponding Potts model with number of spin-labels equal to the size of the smallest class which is greater or equal than two (respectively greater or equal than three.) We also provide a dynamical interpretation considering sequences of fuzzy Potts models which are obtained by increasingly collapsing classes at finitely many times and discuss the possibility of a multiple in- and out of Gibbsianness, depending on the collapsing scheme.

Low-temperature dynamics of the Curie-Weiss Model: Periodic orbits, multiple histories, and loss of Gibbsianness

We consider the Curie-Weiss model at a given initial temperature in vanishing external field evolving under a Glauber spin-flip dynamics corresponding to a possibly different temperature. We study the limiting conditional probabilities and their continuity properties and discuss their set of points of discontinuity (bad points). We provide a complete analysis of the transition between Gibbsian and non-Gibbsian behavior as a function of time, extending earlier work for the case of independent spin-flip dynamics. For initial temperature bigger than one we prove that the time-evolved measure stays Gibbs forever, for any (possibly low) temperature of the dynamics. In the regime of heating to low-temperatures from even lower temperatures, when the initial temperature is smaller than the temperature of the dynamics, and smaller than 1, we prove that the time-evolved measure is Gibbs initially and becomes non-Gibbs after a sharp transition time. We find this regime is further divided into a region where only symmetric bad configurations exist, and a region where this symmetry is broken. In the regime of further cooling from low-temperatures there is always symmetry-breaking in the set of bad configurations. These bad configurations are created by a new mechanism which is related to the occurrence of periodic orbits for the vector field which describes the dynamics of Euler-Lagrange equations for the path large deviation functional for the order parameter. To our knowledge this is the first example of the rigorous study of non-Gibbsian phenomena related to cooling, albeit in a mean-field setup.

Gibbs-non-Gibbs properties for evolving Ising models on trees

In this paper we study homogeneous Gibbs measures on a Cayley tree, subjected to an infinite-temperature Glauber evolution, and consider their (non-)Gibbsian properties. We show that the intermediate Gibbs state (which in zero field is the free-boundary-condition Gibbs state) behaves different from the plus and the minus state. E.g. at large times, all configurations are bad for the intermediate state, whereas the plus configuration never is bad for the plus state. Moreover, we show that for each state there are two transitions. For the intermediate state there is a transition from a Gibbsian regime to a non-Gibbsian regime where some, but not all configurations are bad, and a second one to a regime where all configurations are bad. For the plus and minus state, the two transitions are from a Gibbsian regime to a non-Gibbsian one and then back to a Gibbsian regime again.

Metastates in finite-type mean-field models: visibility, invisibility, and random restoration of symmetry

We consider a general class of disordered mean-field models where both the spin variables and disorder variables take finitely many values. To investigate the size-dependence in the phase-transition regime we construct the metastate describing the probabilities to find a large system close to a particular convex combination of the pure infinite-volume states. We show that, under a non-degeneracy assumption, only pure states are seen, with non-random probability weights for which we derive explicit expressions in terms of interactions and distributions of the disorder variables. We provide a geometric construction distinguishing invisible states (having zero weights) from visible ones. As a further consequence we show that, in the case where precisely two pure states are available, these must necessarily occur with the same weight, even if the model has no obvious symmetry relating the two.

How non-Gibbsianness helps a metastable Morita minimizer to provide a stable free energy

We analyze a simple approximation scheme based on the Morita-approach for the example of the mean field random field Ising model where it is claimed to be exact in some of the physics literature. We show that the approximation scheme is flawed, but it provides a set of equations whose metastable solutions surprisingly yield the correct solution of the model. We explain how the same equations appear in a different way as rigorous consistency equations. We clarify the relation between the validity of their solutions and the almost surely discontinuous behavior of the single-site conditional probabilities.

Gibbs properties of the fuzzy Potts model on trees and in mean field

We study Gibbs properties of the fuzzy Potts model in the mean field case (i.e on a complete graph) and on trees. For the mean field case, a complete characterization of the set of temperatures for which non-Gibbsianness happens is given. The results for trees are somewhat less explicit, but we do show for general trees that non-Gibbsianness of the fuzzy Potts model happens exactly for those temperatures where the underlying Potts model has multiple Gibbs measures.

Variational principle for generalized Gibbsian measures

We study the thermodynamic formalism for generalized Gibbs measures, such as renormalization group transformations of Gibbs measures or joint measures of disordered spin systems. We first show existence of the relative entropy density and obtain a familiar expression in terms of entropy and relative energy for "almost Gibbsian measures" (almost sure continuity of conditional probabilities). We also describe these measures as equilibrium states and establish an extension of the usual variational principle. As a corollary, we obtain a full variational principle for quasilocal measures. For the joint measures of the random field Ising model, we show that the weak Gibbs property holds, with an almost surely rapidly decaying translation invariant potential. For these measures we show that the variational principle fails as soon as the measures loses the almost Gibbs property. These examples suggest that the class of weakly Gibbsian measures is too broad from the perspective of a reasonable thermodynamic formalism.

Weakly Gibbsian representations for joint measures of quenched lattice spin models

Can the joint measures of quenched disordered lattice spin models (with finite range) on the product of spin-space and disorder-space be represented as (suitably generalized) Gibbs measures of an ``annealed system''? - We prove that there is always a potential (depending on both spin and disorder variables) that converges absolutely on a set of full measure w.r.t. the joint measure (``weak Gibbsianness''). This ``positive'' result is surprising when contrasted with the results of a previous paper [K6], where we investigated the measure of the set of discontinuity points of the conditional expectations (investigation of ``a.s. Gibbsianness''). In particular we gave natural ``negative'' examples where this set is even of measure one (including the random field Ising model). Further we discuss conditions giving the convergence of vacuum potentials and conditions for the decay of the joint potential in terms of the decay of the disorder average over certain quenched correlations. We apply them to various examples. From this one typically expects the existence of a potential that decays superpolynomially outside a set of measure zero. Our proof uses a martingale argument that allows to cut (an infinite volume analogue of) the quenched free energy into local pieces, along with generalizations of Kozlov's constructions.

Stability for a continuous SOS-interface model in a randomly perturbed periodic potential

We consider the Gibbs-measures of continuous-valued height configurations on the $d$-dimensional integer lattice in the presence a weakly disordered potential. The potential is composed of Gaussians having random location and random depth; it becomes periodic under shift of the interface perpendicular to the base-plane for zero disorder. We prove that there exist localized interfaces with probability one in dimensions $d\geq 3+1$, in a `low-temperature' regime. The proof extends the method of continuous-to-discrete single- site coarse graining that was previously applied by the author for a double-well potential to the case of a non-compact image space. This allows to utilize parts of the renormalization group analysis developed for the treatment of a contour representation of a related integer-valued SOS-model in [BoK1]. We show that, for a.e. fixed realization of the disorder, the infinite volume Gibbs measures then have a representation as superpositions of massive Gaussian fields with centerings that are distributed according to the infinite volume Gibbs measures of the disordered integer-valued SOS-model with exponentially decaying interactions.

The continuous spin random field model: Ferromagnetic ordering in d>=3

We investigate the Gibbs-measures of ferromagnetically coupled continuous spins in double-well potentials subjected to a random field (our specific example being the $ϕ^4$ theory), showing ferromagnetic ordering in $d\geq 3$ dimensions for weak disorder and large energy barriers. We map the random continuous spin distributions to distributions for an Ising-spin system by means of a single-site coarse-graining method described by local transition kernels. We derive a contour- representation for them with notably positive contour activities and prove their Gibbsianness. This representation is shown to allow for application of the discrete-spin renormalization group developed by Bricmont/Kupiainen implying the result in $d\geq 3$.
