Numerical study of transverse (in-)stability of solitary waves in the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation

We study the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with a competing cubic-quintic power law nonlinearity on the waveguide domain $\mathbb R_x \times \mathbb T_{L_y}$. This model is globally well-posed and admits line solitary wave solutions, whose transverse (in-)stability is numerically investigated. We consider both spatially localized perturbations and periodic deformations of the line solitary wave and numerically confirm that there exists a critical torus length $L_y>0$ above which instability appears.

Effective Dynamics of Translationally Invariant Magnetic Schrödinger Equations in the High Field Limit

We study the large field limit in Schrödinger equations with magnetic vector potentials describing translationally invariant $B$-fields with respect to the $z$-axis. In a first step, using regular perturbation theory, we derive an approximate description of the solution, provided the initial data is compactly supported in the Fourier-variable dual to $z\in \mathbb R$. The effective dynamics is thereby seen to produce high-frequency oscillations and large magnetic drifts. In a second step we show, by using the theory of almost invariant subspaces, that this asymptotic description is stable under polynomially bounded perturbations that vanish in the vicinity of the origin.

Semiclassical wave-packets for weakly nonlinear Schrödinger equations with rotation

We consider semiclassically scaled, weakly nonlinear Schrödinger equations with external confining potentials and additional angular-momentum rotation term. This type of model arises in the Gross-Pitaevskii theory of trapped, rotating quantum gases. We construct asymptotic solutions in the form of semiclassical wave-packets, which are concentrated in both space and in frequency around an classical Hamiltonian phase-space flow. The rotation term is thereby seen to alter this flow, but not the corresponding classical action.

Stability and instability properties of rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider the mean-field dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in rotating harmonic traps and establish several stability and instability properties for the corresponding solution. We particularly emphasize the difference between the situation in which the trap is symmetric with respect to the rotation axis and the one where this is not the case.

Nonlinear bound states with prescribed angular momentum

We prove the existence of a class of orbitally stable bound state solutions to nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations with super-quadratic confinement in two and three spatial dimensions. These solutions are given by time-dependent rotations of a non-radially symmetric spatial profile which in itself is obtained via a doubly constrained energy minimization. One of the two constraints imposed is the total mass, while the other is given by the expectation value of the angular momentum around the z-axis. Our approach also allows for a new description of the set of minimizers subject to only a single mass constraint.

Self-Bound vortex states in nonlinear Schrödinger equations with LHY correction

We study the cubic-quartic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) in two and three spatial dimension. This equation arises in the mean-field description of Bose-Einstein condensates with Lee-Huang-Yang correction. We first prove global existence of solutions in natural energy spaces which allow for the description of self-bound quantum droplets with vorticity. Existence of such droplets, described as central vortex states in 2D and 3D, is then proved using an approach via constrained energy minimizers. A natural connection to the NLS with repulsive inverse-square potential in 2D arises, leading to an orbital stability result under the corresponding flow.

Strong Magnetic Field Limit in a Nonlinear Iwatsuka-Type Model

We study the strong magnetic field limit for a nonlinear Iwatsuka-type model, i.e. a nonlinear Schrödinger equation in two spatial dimensions with a magnetic vector potential that only depends on the $x$-coordinate. Using a high-frequency averaging technique, we show that this equation can be effectively described by a nonlocal nonlinear model, which is no longer dispersive. We also prove that, in this asymptotic regime, inhomogeneous nonlinearities are confined along the $y$-axis.

On an intercritical log-modified nonlinear Schrodinger equation in two spatial dimensions

We consider a dispersive equation of Schr{ö}dinger type with a non-linearity slightly larger than cubic by a logarithmic factor. This equation is supposed to be an effective model for stable two dimensional quantum droplets with LHY correction. Mathematically, it is seen to be mass supercritical and energy subcritical with a sign-indefinite nonlinearity. For the corresponding initial value problem, we prove global in-time existence of strong solutions in the energy space. Furthermore, we prove the existence and uniqueness (up to symmetries) of nonlinear ground states and the orbital stability of the set of energy minimizers. We also show that for the corresponding model in 1D a stronger stability result is available.

Orbital stability vs. scattering in the cubic-quintic Schrodinger equation

We consider the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation in space dimension up to three. The cubic nonlinearity is thereby focusing while the quintic one is defocusing, ensuring global well-posedness of the Cauchy problem in the energy space. The main goal of this paper is to investigate the interplay between dispersion and orbital (in-)stability of solitary waves. In space dimension one, it is already known that all solitons are orbitally stable. In dimension two, we show that if the initial data belong to the conformal space, and have at most the mass of the ground state of the cubic two-dimensional Schr{ö}dinger equation, then the solution is asymptotically linear. For larger mass, solitary wave solutions exist, and we review several results on their stability. Finally, in dimension three, relying on previous results from other authors, we show that solitons may or may not be orbitally stable.

On a dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii-type model for exciton-polariton condensates

We study a generalized dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii-type model arising in the description of exciton-polariton condensates. We derive global in-time existence results and various a-priori estimates for this model posed on the one-dimensional torus. Moreover, we analyze in detail the long-time behavior of spatially homogenous solutions and their respective steady states and present numerical simulations in the case of more general initial data. We also study the convergence to the corresponding adiabatic regime, which results in a single damped-driven Gross-Pitaveskii equation.

Regularizing nonlinear Schroedinger equations through partial off-axis variations

We study a class of focusing nonlinear Schroedinger-type equations derived recently by Dumas, Lannes and Szeftel within the mathematical description of high intensity laser beams [7]. These equations incorporate the possibility of a (partial) off-axis variation of the group velocity of such laser beams through a second order partial differential operator acting in some, but not necessarily all, spatial directions. We study the well-posedness theory for such models and obtain a regularizing effect, even in the case of only partial off-axis dependence. This provides an answer to an open problem posed in [7].

Averaging of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with strong magnetic confinement

We consider the dynamics of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with strong constant magnetic fields. In an asymptotic scaling limit the system exhibits a purely magnetic confinement, based on the spectral properties of the Landau Hamiltonian. Using an averaging technique we derive an associated effective description via an averaged model of nonlinear Schrödinger type. In a special case this also yields a derivation of the LLL equation.

Rigorous derivation of nonlinear Dirac equations for wave propagation in honeycomb structures

We consider a nonlinear Schroedinger equation in two spatial dimensions subject to a periodic honeycomb lattice potential. Using a multi-scale expansion together with rigorous error estimates, we derive an effective model of nonlinear Dirac type. The latter describes the propagation of slowly modulated, weakly nonlinear waves spectrally localized near a Dirac point.

An Efficient Time-splitting Method for the Ehrenfest Dynamics

The Ehrenfest dynamics, representing a quantum-classical mean-field type coupling, is a widely used approximation in quantum molecular dynamics. In this paper, we propose a time-splitting method for an Ehrenfest dynamics, in the form of a nonlinearly coupled Schrödinger-Liouville system. We prove that our splitting scheme is stable uniformly with respect to the semiclassical parameter, and, moreover, that it preserves a discrete semiclassical limit. Thus one can accurately compute physical observables using time steps induced only by the classical Liouville equation, i.e., independent of the small semiclassical parameter - in addition to classical mesh sizes for the Liouville equation. Numerical examples illustrate the validity of our meshing strategy.

Global attractor for a Ginzburg-Landau type model of rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the long time behavior of solutions to a nonlinear partial differential equation arising in the description of trapped rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. The equation can be seen as a hybrid between the well-known nonlinear Schrödinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the Ginzburg-Landau equation. We prove existence and uniqueness of global in-time solutions in the physical energy space and establish the existence of a global attractor within the associated dynamics. We also obtain basic structural properties of the attractor and an estimate on its Hausdorff and fractal dimensions.

Dimension reduction for rotating Bose-Einstein condensates with anisotropic confinement

We consider the three-dimensional time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation arising in the description of rotating Bose-Einstein condensates and study the corresponding scaling limit of strongly anisotropic confinement potentials. The resulting effective equations in one or two spatial dimensions, respectively, are rigorously obtained as special cases of an averaged three dimensional limit model. In the particular case where the rotation axis is not parallel to the strongly confining direction the resulting limiting model(s) include a negative, and thus, purely repulsive quadratic potential, which is not present in the original equation and which can be seen as an effective centrifugal force counteracting the confinement.

Weakly nonlinear time-adiabatic theory

We revisit the time-adiabatic theorem of quantum mechanics and show that it can be extended to weakly nonlinear situations, that is to nonlinear Schroedinger equations in which either the nonlinear coupling constant or, equivalently, the solution is asymptotically small. To this end, a notion of criticality is introduced at which the linear bound states stay adiabatically stable, but nonlinear effects start to show up at leading order in the form of a slowly varying nonlinear phase modulation. In addition, we prove that in the same regime a class of nonlinear bound states also stays adiabatically stable, at least in terms of spectral projections.
