High-frequency averaging in semi-classical Hartree-type equations

We investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to semi-classical Schroedinger equations with nonlinearities of Hartree type. For a weakly nonlinear scaling, we show the validity of an asymptotic superposition principle for slowly modulated highly oscillatory pulses. The result is based on a high-frequency averaging effect due to the nonlocal nature of the Hartree potential, which inhibits the creation of new resonant waves. In the proof we make use of the framework of Wiener algebras.

Global well-posedness for cubic NLS with nonlinear damping

We study the Cauchy problem for the cubic nonlinear Schroedinger equation, perturbed by (higher order) dissipative nonlinearities. We prove global in-time existence of solutions for general initial data in the energy space. In particular we treat the energy-critical case of a quintic dissipation in three space dimensions.

Multiphase weakly nonlinear geometric optics for Schrodinger equations

We describe and rigorously justify the nonlinear interaction of highly oscillatory waves in nonlinear Schrodinger equations, posed on Euclidean space or on the torus. Our scaling corresponds to a weakly nonlinear regime where the nonlinearity affects the leading order amplitude of the solution, but does not alter the rapid oscillations. We consider initial states which are superpositions of slowly modulated plane waves, and use the framework of Wiener algebras. A detailed analysis of the corresponding nonlinear wave mixing phenomena is given, including a geometric interpretation on the resonance structure for cubic nonlinearities. As an application, we recover and extend some instability results for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation on the torus in negative order Sobolev spaces.

Classical limit for semi-relativistic Hartree systems

We consider the three-dimensional semi-relativistic Hartree model for fast quantum mechanical particles moving in a self-consistent field. Under appropriate assumptions on the initial density matrix as a (fully) mixed quantum state we prove, using Wigner transformation techniques, that its classical limit yields the well known relativistic Vlasov-Poisson system. The result holds for the case of attractive and repulsive mean-field interaction, with an additional size constraint in the attractive case.

On the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for trapped dipolar quantum gases

We study the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing Bose-Einstein condensation of trapped dipolar quantum gases. Existence and uniqueness as well as the possible blow-up of solutions are studied. Moreover, we discuss the problem of dimension-reduction for this nonlinear and nonlocal Schrodinger equation.

Rigorous derivation of the hydrodynamical equations for rotating superfluids

Using a modified WKB approach, we present a rigorous semi-classical analysis for solutions of nonlinear Schroedinger equations with rotational forcing. This yields a rigorous justification for the hydrodynamical system of rotating superfluids. In particular it is shown that global-in-time semi-classical convergence holds whenever the limiting hydrodynamical system has global smooth solutions and we also discuss the semi-classical dynamics of several physical quantities describing rotating superfluids.

Interaction of modulated pulses in the nonlinear Schroedinger equation with periodic potential

We consider a cubic nonlinear Schroedinger equation with periodic potential. In a semiclassical scaling the nonlinear interaction of modulated pulses concentrated in one or several Bloch bands is studied. The notion of closed mode systems is introduced which allows for the rigorous derivation of a finite system of amplitude equations describing the macroscopic dynamics of these pulses.

Geometric currents in piezoelectricity

As a simple model for piezoelectricity we consider a gas of infinitely many non-interacting electrons subject to a slowly time-dependent periodic potential. We show that in the adiabatic limit the macroscopic current is determined by the geometry of the Bloch bundle. As a consequence we obtain the King-Smith and Vanderbilt formula up to errors smaller than any power of the adiabatic parameter.

Existence of global-in-time solutions to a generalized Dirac-Fock type evolution equation

We consider a generalized Dirac-Fock type evolution equation deduced from no-photon Quantum Electrodynamics, which describes the self-consistent time-evolution of relativistic electrons, the observable ones as well as those filling up the Dirac sea. This equation has been originally introduced by Dirac in 1934 in a simplified form. Since we work in a Hartree-Fock type approximation, the elements describing the physical state of the electrons are infinite rank projectors. Using the Bogoliubov-Dirac-Fock formalism, introduced by Chaix-Iracane ({\it J. Phys. B.}, 22, 3791--3814, 1989), and recently established by Hainzl-Lewin-Sere, we prove the existence of global-in-time solutions of the considered evolution equation.

Effective mass theorems for nonlinear Schroedinger equations

We consider time-dependent nonlinear Schroedinger equations subject to smooth, lattice-periodic potentials plus additional confining potentials, slowly varying on the lattice scale. After an appropriate scaling we study the homogenization limit for vanishing lattice spacing. Assuming well prepared initial data, the resulting effective dynamics is governed by a homogenized nonlinear Schroedinger equation with an effective mass tensor depending on the initially chosen Bloch eigenvalue. The given results rigorously justify the use of the effective mass formalism for the description of Bose-Einstein condensates on optical lattices.

Quantum dynamical semigroups for diffusion models with Hartree interaction

We consider a class of evolution equations in Lindblad form, which model the dynamics of dissipative quantum mechanical systems with mean-field interaction. Particularly, this class includes the so-called Quantum Fokker-Planck-Poisson model. The existence and uniqueness of global-in-time, mass preserving solutions is proved, thus establishing the existence of a nonlinear conservative quantum dynamical semigroup. The mathematical difficulties stem from combining an unbounded Lindblad generator with the Hartree nonlinearity.

Semiclassical asymptotics for weakly nonlinear Bloch waves

We study the simultaneous semi-classical and adiabatic asymptotics for a class of (weakly) nonlinear Schroedinger equations with a fast periodic potential and a slowly varying confinement potential. A rigorous two-scale WKB-analysis, locally in time, is performed. The main nonlinear phenomenon is a modification of the Berry phase.

Wigner Functions versus WKB-Methods in Multivalued Geometrical Optics

We consider the Cauchy-problem for a class of scalar linear dispersive equations with rapidly oscillating initial data. The problem of high-frequency asymptotics of such models is reviewed,in particular we highlight the difficulties in crossing caustics when using (time-dependent) WKB-methods. Using Wigner measures we present an alternative approach to such asymptotic problems. We first discuss the connection of the naive WKB solutions to transport equations of Liouville type (with mono-kinetic solutions) in the prebreaking regime. Further we show that the Wigner measure approach can be used to analyze high-frequency limits in the post-breaking regime, in comparison with the traditional Fourier integral operator method. Finally we present some illustrating examples.
