Hacking Flow: From Lived Practices to Innovation

In digital knowledge work, flow promises not just productivity; it offers a pathway to well-being. Yet despite decades of flow research in HCI, we know little about how to design digital interventions that support it. In this work, we foreground lived interventions - everyday practices workers already use to foster flow - to uncover overlooked opportunities and chart new directions for digital intervention design. Specifically, we report findings from two studies: (1) a reflexive thematic analysis of open-ended survey responses (n = 160), surfacing 38 lived interventions across four categories: environment, organization, task shaping, and personal readiness; and (2) a quantitative online survey (n = 121) that validates this repertoire, identifies which interventions are broadly endorsed versus polarizing, and elicits visions of technological support. We contribute empirical insights into how digital workers cultivate flow, situate these lived interventions within existing literature, and derive design opportunities for future digital flow interventions.

NeMig -- A Bilingual News Collection and Knowledge Graph about Migration

News recommendation plays a critical role in shaping the public's worldviews through the way in which it filters and disseminates information about different topics. Given the crucial impact that media plays in opinion formation, especially for sensitive topics, understanding the effects of personalized recommendation beyond accuracy has become essential in today's digital society. In this work, we present NeMig, a bilingual news collection on the topic of migration, and corresponding rich user data. In comparison to existing news recommendation datasets, which comprise a large variety of monolingual news, NeMig covers articles on a single controversial topic, published in both Germany and the US. We annotate the sentiment polarization of the articles and the political leanings of the media outlets, in addition to extracting subtopics and named entities disambiguated through Wikidata. These features can be used to analyze the effects of algorithmic news curation beyond accuracy-based performance, such as recommender biases and the creation of filter bubbles. We construct domain-specific knowledge graphs from the news text and metadata, thus encoding knowledge-level connections between articles. Importantly, while existing datasets include only click behavior, we collect user socio-demographic and political information in addition to explicit click feedback. We demonstrate the utility of NeMig through experiments on the tasks of news recommenders benchmarking, analysis of biases in recommenders, and news trends analysis. NeMig aims to provide a useful resource for the news recommendation community and to foster interdisciplinary research into the multidimensional effects of algorithmic news curation.

Integrating Hydrogen in Single-Price Electricity Systems: The Effects of Spatial Economic Signals

Hydrogen can contribute substantially to the reduction of carbon emissions in industry and transportation. However, the production of hydrogen through electrolysis creates interdependencies between hydrogen supply chains and electricity systems. Therefore, as governments worldwide are planning considerable financial subsidies and new regulation to promote hydrogen infrastructure investments in the next years, energy policy research is needed to guide such policies with holistic analyses. In this study, we link a electrolytic hydrogen supply chain model with an electricity system dispatch model, for a cross-sectoral case study of Germany in 2030. We find that hydrogen infrastructure investments and their effects on the electricity system are strongly influenced by electricity prices. Given current uniform prices, hydrogen production increases congestion costs in the electricity grid by 17%. In contrast, passing spatially resolved electricity price signals leads to electrolyzers being placed at low-cost grid nodes and further away from consumption centers. This causes lower end-use costs for hydrogen. Moreover, congestion management costs decrease substantially, by up to 20% compared to the benchmark case without hydrogen. These savings could be transferred into according subsidies for hydrogen production. Thus, our study demonstrates the benefits of differentiating economic signals for hydrogen production based on spatial criteria.

An Enriched Automated PV Registry: Combining Image Recognition and 3D Building Data

While photovoltaic (PV) systems are installed at an unprecedented rate, reliable information on an installation level remains scarce. As a result, automatically created PV registries are a timely contribution to optimize grid planning and operations. This paper demonstrates how aerial imagery and three-dimensional building data can be combined to create an address-level PV registry, specifying area, tilt, and orientation angles. We demonstrate the benefits of this approach for PV capacity estimation. In addition, this work presents, for the first time, a comparison between automated and officially-created PV registries. Our results indicate that our enriched automated registry proves to be useful to validate, update, and complement official registries.

Towards an Economic Analysis of Routing in Payment Channel Networks

Payment channel networks are supposed to overcome technical scalability limitations of blockchain infrastructure by employing a special overlay network with fast payment confirmation and only sporadic settlement of netted transactions on the blockchain. However, they introduce economic routing constraints that limit decentralized scalability and are currently not well understood. In this paper, we model the economic incentives for participants in payment channel networks. We provide the first formal model of payment channel economics and analyze how the cheapest path can be found. Additionally, our simulation assesses the long-term evolution of a payment channel network. We find that even for small routing fees, sometimes it is cheaper to settle the transaction directly on the blockchain.
