Scaling solutions for Dilaton Quantum Gravity

Scaling solutions for the effective action in dilaton quantum gravity are investigated within the functional renormalization group approach. We find numerical solutions that connect ultraviolet and infrared fixed points as the ratio between scalar field and renormalization scale $k$ is varied. In the Einstein frame the quantum effective action corresponding to the scaling solutions becomes independent of $k$. The field equations derived from this effective action can be used directly for cosmology. Scale symmetry is spontaneously broken by a non-vanishing cosmological value of the scalar field. For the cosmology corresponding to our scaling solutions, inflation arises naturally. The effective cosmological constant becomes dynamical and vanishes asymptotically as time goes to infinity.

Backreaction in Growing Neutrino Quintessence

We investigate the cosmological effects of neutrino lumps in Growing Neutrino Quintessence. The strongly non-linear effects are resolved by means of numerical N-body simulations which include relativistic particles, non-linear scalar field equations and backreaction effects. For the investigated models with a constant coupling between the scalar field and the neutrinos the backreaction effects are so strong that a realistic cosmology is hard to realize. This points towards the necessity of a field dependent coupling in Growing Neutrino Quintessence. In this case realistic models of dynamical Dark Energy exist which are testable by the observation or non-observation of large neutrino lumps.

Isotropization from Color Field Condensate in heavy ion collisions

The expanding fireball shortly after a heavy ion collision may be qualitatively described by a condensate of color fields or gluons which is analogous to Bose-Einstein-condensation for massive bosonic particles. This condensate is a transient non-equilibrium phenomenon and breaks Lorentz-boost symmetry. The dynamics of color field condensates involves collective excitations and is rather different from the perturbative scattering of gluons. In particular, it provides for an efficient mechanism to render the local pressure approximately isotropic after a short time of 0.2 fm/c. We suggest that an isotropic color field condensate may play a central role for a simple description of prethermalization and isotropization in the early stages of the collision.

Nonlinear growing neutrino cosmology

The energy scale of Dark Energy, $\sim 2 \times 10^{-3}$ eV, is a long way off compared to all known fundamental scales - except for the neutrino masses. If Dark Energy is dynamical and couples to neutrinos, this is no longer a coincidence. The time at which Dark Energy starts to behave as an effective cosmological constant can be linked to the time at which the cosmic neutrinos become nonrelativistic. This naturally places the onset of the Universe's accelerated expansion in recent cosmic history, addressing the why-now problem of Dark Energy. We show that these mechanisms indeed work in the Growing Neutrino Quintessence model - even if the fully nonlinear structure formation and backreaction are taken into account, which were previously suspected of spoiling the cosmological evolution. The attractive force between neutrinos arising from their coupling to Dark Energy grows as large as $10^6$ times the gravitational strength. This induces very rapid dynamics of neutrino fluctuations which are nonlinear at redshift $z \approx 2$. Nevertheless, a nonlinear stabilization phenomenon ensures only mildly nonlinear oscillating neutrino overdensities with a large-scale gravitational potential substantially smaller than that of cold dark matter perturbations. Depending on model parameters, the signals of large-scale neutrino lumps may render the cosmic neutrino background observable.

Small scale structures in coupled scalar field dark matter

We investigate structure formation for ultralight scalar field dark matter coupled to quintessence, in particular the cosmon-bolon system. The linear power spectrum is computed by a numerical solution of the coupled field equations. We infer the substructure abundance within a Milky Way-like halo. Estimates of dark halo abundances from recent galaxy surveys imply a lower bound on the bolon mass of about $9 \times 10^{-22}$ eV. This seems to exclude a possible detection of scalar field dark matter through time variation in pulsar timing signals in the near future.

Critical temperature and superfluid gap of the Unitary Fermi Gas from Functional Renormalization

We investigate the superfluid transition of the Unitary Fermi Gas by means of the Functional Renormalization Group, aiming at quantitative precision. We extract $T_{\rm c}/μ=0.38(2)$ and $Δ/μ=1.04(15)$ for the critical temperature and the superfluid gap at zero temperature, respectively, within a systematic improvement of the truncation for the effective average action. The key new ingredient in comparison to previous approaches consists in the use of regulators which cut off both frequencies and momenta. We incorporate renormalization effects on both the bosonic and the fermionic propagator, include higher order bosonic scattering processes, and investigate the regulator and specification parameter dependence for an error estimate. The ratio $Δ/T_{\rm c}=2.7(3)$ becomes less sensitive to the relative cutoff scale of bosons and fermions when improving the truncation. The techniques developed in this work are easily carried over to the cases of finite scattering length, lower dimensionality, and spin-imbalance.

Dilaton Quantum Gravity

We propose a simple fixed point scenario in the renormalization flow of a scalar dilaton coupled to gravity. This would render gravity non-perturbatively renormalizable and thus constitute a viable theory of quantum gravity. On the fixed point dilatation symmetry is exact and the quantum effective action takes a very simple form. Realistic gravity with a nonzero Planck mass is obtained through a nonzero expectation value for the scalar field, constituting a spontaneous scale symmetry breaking. Furthermore, relevant couplings for the flow away from the fixed point can be associated with a 'dilatation anomaly' that is responsible for dynamical dark energy. For the proposed fixed point and flow away from it the cosmological 'constant' vanishes for asymptotic time.

Tan contact and universal high momentum behavior of the fermion propagator in the BCS-BEC crossover

We derive the universal high momentum factorization of the fermion self-energy in the BCS-BEC crossover of ultracold atoms using nonperturbative quantum field theoretical methods. This property is then employed to compute the Tan contact as a function of interaction strength, temperature, chemical potential and Fermi momentum. We clarify the mechanism of the factorization from an analysis of the self-consistent Schwinger-Dyson equation for the fermion propagator, and compute the perturbative contact on the BCS and BEC sides within this framework. A Functional Renormalization Group approach is then put forward, which allows to determine the contact over the whole crossover and, in particular, for the Unitary Fermi gas. We present numerical results from an implementation of the Renormalization Group equations within a basic truncation scheme.

How early is early dark energy?

We investigate constraints on early dark energy (EDE) from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropy, taking into account data from WMAP9 combined with latest small scale measurements from the South Pole Telescope (SPT). For a constant EDE fraction we propose a new parametrization with one less parameter but still enough to provide similar results to the ones previously studied in literature. The main emphasis of our analysis, however, compares a new set of different EDE parametrizations that reveal how CMB constraints depend on the redshift epoch at which Dark Energy was non negligible. We find that bounds on EDE get substantially weaker if dark energy starts to be non-negligible later, with early dark energy fraction Omega_e free to go up to about 5% at 2 sigma if the onset of EDE happens at z < 100. Tight bounds around 1-2% are obtained whenever dark energy is present at last scattering, even if its effects switch off afterwards. We show that the CMB mainly constrains the presence of Dark Energy at the time of its emission, while EDE-modifications of the subsequent growth of structure are less important.

Error estimates and specification parameters for functional renormalization

We present a strategy for estimating the error of truncated functional flow equations. While the basic functional renormalization group equation is exact, approximated solutions by means of truncations do not only depend on the choice of the retained information, but also on the precise definition of the truncation. Therefore, results depend on specification parameters that can be used to quantify the error of a given truncation. We demonstrate this for the BCS-BEC crossover in ultracold atoms. Within a simple truncation the precise definition of the frequency dependence of the truncated propagator affects the results, indicating a shortcoming of the choice of a frequency independent cutoff function.

Neutrino Lump Fluid in Growing Neutrino Quintessence

Growing neutrino quintessence addresses the "why now" problem of dark energy by assuming that the neutrinos are coupled to the dark energy scalar field. The coupling mediates an attractive force between the neutrinos leading to the formation of large neutrino lumps. This work proposes an effective, simplified description of the subsequent cosmological dynamics. We treat neutrino lumps as effective particles and investigate their properties and mutual interactions. The neutrino lump fluid behaves as cold dark matter coupled to dark energy. The methods developed here may find wider applications for fluids of composite objects.

Chemical freeze-out in heavy ion collisions at large baryon densities

We argue that the chemical freeze-out in heavy ion collisions at high baryon density is not associated to a phase transition or rapid crossover. We employ the linear nucleon-meson model with parameters fixed by the zero-temperature properties of nuclear matter close to the liquid-gas quantum phase transition. For the parameter region of interest this yields a reliable picture of the thermodynamic and chiral properties at non-zero temperature. The chemical freeze-out observed in low-energy experiments occurs when baryon densities fall below a critical value of about 15 percent of nuclear density. This region in the phase diagram is far away from any phase transition or rapid crossover.

Structure Formation and Backreaction in Growing Neutrino Quintessence

A dependence of the neutrino masses on the dark energy scalar field could provide a solution to the why now problem of dark energy. The dynamics of the resulting cosmological model, growing neutrino quintessence, include an attractive force between neutrinos substantially stronger than gravity. We present a comprehensive approach towards an understanding of the full cosmological evolution including the formation of large-scale neutrino structures. Important effects we account for are local variations in the dark energy and the backreaction on the background evolution, as well as relativistic neutrino velocities. For this aim, we develop a relativistic N-body treatment of the neutrinos combined with an explicit computation of the local quintessence field. At its current stage, the simulation method is successful until z ~ 1 and reveals a rich phenomenology. We obtain a detailed picture of the formation of large-scale neutrino structures and their influence on the evolution of matter, dark energy, and the late-time expansion of the universe.

Coupled dark energy and dark matter from dilatation anomaly

Cosmological runaway solutions may exhibit an exact dilatation symmetry in the asymptotic limit of infinite time. In this limit, the massless dilaton or cosmon could be accompanied by another massless scalar field - the geon. At finite time, small time-dependent masses for both the cosmon and geon are still present due to imperfect dilatation symmetry. For a sufficiently large mass the geon will start oscillating and play the role of dark matter, while the cosmon is responsible for dark energy. The common origin of the mass of both fields leads to an effective interaction between dark matter and dark energy. Realistic cosmologies are possible for a simple form of the effective cosmon-geon-potential. We find an inverse geon mass of a size where it could reduce subgalactic structure formation.

Hydrodynamic collective modes for cold trapped gases

We suggest that collective oscillation frequencies of cold trapped gases can be used to test predictions from quantum many-body physics. Our motivation lies both in rigid experimental tests of theoretical calculations and a possible improvement of measurements of particle number, chemical potential or temperature. We calculate the effects of interaction, dimensionality and thermal fluctuations on the collective modes of a dilute Bose gas in the hydrodynamic limit. The underlying equation of state is provided by non-perturbative Functional Renormalization Group or by Lee--Yang theory. The spectrum of oscillation frequencies could be measured by response techniques. Our findings are generalized to bosonic or fermionic quantum gases with an arbitrary equation of state in the two-fluid hydrodynamic regime. For any given equation of state P(μ,T) and normal fluid density n_n(μ,T) the collective oscillation frequencies in a $d$-dimensional isotropic potential are found to be the eigenvalues of an ordinary differential operator. We suggest a method of numerical solution and discuss the zero-temperature limit. Exact results are provided for harmonic traps and certain special forms of the equation of state. We also present a phenomenological treatment of dissipation effects and discuss the possibility to excite the different eigenmodes individually.

Oscillating nonlinear large scale structure in growing neutrino quintessence

Growing Neutrino quintessence describes a form of dynamical dark energy that could explain why dark energy dominates the universe only in recent cosmological times. This scenario predicts the formation of large scale neutrino lumps which could allow for observational tests. We perform for the first time N-body simulations of the nonlinear growth of structures for cold dark matter and neutrino fluids in the context of Growing Neutrino cosmologies. Our analysis shows a pulsation - increase and subsequent decrease - of the neutrino density contrast. This could lead to interesting observational signatures, as an enhanced bulk flow in a situation where the dark matter density contrast only differs very mildly from the standard LCDM scenario. We also determine for the first time the statistical distribution of neutrino lumps as a function of mass at different redshifts. Such determination provides an essential ingredient for a realistic estimate of the observational signatures of Growing Neutrino cosmologies. Due to a breakdown of the non-relativistic Newtonian approximation our results are limited to redshifts z > 1.

Quantum phase transition in Bose-Fermi mixtures

We study a quantum Bose-Fermi mixture near a broad Feshbach resonance at zero temperature. Within a quantum field theoretical model a two-step Gaussian approximation allows to capture the main features of the quantum phase diagram. We show that a repulsive boson-boson interaction is necessary for thermodynamic stability. The quantum phase diagram is mapped in chemical potential and density space, and both first and second order quantum phase transitions are found. We discuss typical characteristics of the first order transition, such as hysteresis or a droplet formation of the condensate which may be searched for experimentally.

Theoretical constraints on new generations with and without Quarks or Neutrinos

We consider large classes of chiral extensions of the Standard Model, including new quark generations that do not involve additional neutrinos as well as lepton generations without quarks. An analysis of renormalization flows of Yukawa and quartic scalar couplings reveals that additional quarks are not compatible with a scenario of grand unification without violating the strong bounds from direct and Higgs searches at colliders. Constraints from direct searches, electroweak precision observables, and Higgs physics, together with the assumption that additional new physics beyond the extended chiral field content should enter significantly above the TeV scale, allows us to make predictions for searches at the LHC.
