Impact of three years of data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe on cosmological models with dynamical dark energy

The first three years of observation of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) have provided the most precise data on the anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) to date. We investigate the impact of these results and their combination with data from other astrophysical probes on cosmological models with a dynamical dark energy component. By considering a wide range of such models, we find that the constraints on dynamical dark energy are significantly improved compared to the first year data.

Early Quintessence in Light of WMAP

We examine the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy for signatures of early quintessence dark energy -- a non-negligible quintessence energy density during the recombination and structure formation eras. Only very recently does the quintessence overtake the dark matter and push the expansion into overdrive. Because the presence of early quintessence exerts an influence on the clustering of dark matter and the baryon-photon fluid, we may expect to find trace signals in the CMB and the mass fluctuation power spectrum. In detail, we demonstrate that suppressed clustering power on small length-scales, as suggested by the combined Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) / CMB / large scale structure data set, is characteristic of early quintessence. We identify a set of concordant models, and map out directions for further investigation of early quintessence.

Do Instantons Like a Colorful Background?

We investigate chiral symmetry breaking and color symmetry breaking in QCD. The effective potential of the corresponding scalar condensates is discussed in the presence of non-perturbative contributions from the semiclassical one-instanton sector. We concentrate on a color singlet scalar background which can describe chiral condensation, as well as a color octet scalar background which can generate mass for the gluons. Whereas a non-vanishing singlet chiral field is favored by the instantons, we have found no indication for a preference of color octet backgrounds.

The cosmological constant problem in codimension-two brane models

We discuss the possibility of a dynamical solution to the cosmological constant problem in the contaxt of six-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory. A definite answer requires an understanding of the full bulk cosmology in the early universe, in which the bulk has time-dependent size and shape. We comment on the special properties of codimension two as compared to higher codimensions.

Observational constraints on the dark energy density evolution

We constrain the evolution of the dark energy density from Cosmic Microwave Background, Large Scale Structure and Supernovae Ia measurements. While Supernovae Ia are most sensitive to the equation of state $w_0$ of dark energy today, the Cosmic Microwave Background and Large Scale Structure data best constrains the dark energy evolution at earlier times. For the parametrization used in our models, we find $w_0 < -0.8$ and the dark energy fraction at very high redshift $Ω_{early} < 0.03$ at 95 per cent confidence level.

Non-linear Structure Formation in Cosmologies with Early Dark Energy

We argue that a few per cent of "Early Dark Energy" can be detected by the statistics of nonlinear structures. The presence of Dark Energy during linear structure formation is natural in models where the present tiny Dark-Energy density is related to the age of the Universe rather than a new fundamental small parameter. Generalisation of the spherical collapse model shows that the linear collapse parameter delta_c is lowered. The corresponding relative enhancement of weak gravitational lensing on arc-minute scales lowers the value of sigma_8 inferred from a given lensing amplitude as compared to Lambda-CDM. In presence of Early Dark Energy, structures grow slower, such that for given sigma_8 the number of galaxies and galaxy clusters is substantially increased at moderate and high redshift. For realistic models, the number of clusters detectable through their thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect at redshift unity and above, e.g. with the Planck satellite, can be an order of magnitude larger than for Lambda-CDM.

Dark energy cosmologies for codimension-two branes

A six-dimensional universe with two branes in the "football-shaped" geometry leads to an almost realistic cosmology. We describe a family of exact solutions with time dependent characteristic size of internal space. After a short inflationary period the late cosmology is either of quintessence type or turns to a radiation dominated Friedmann universe where the cosmological constant appears as a free integration constant of the solution. The radiation dominated universe with relativistic fermions is analyzed in detail, including its dimensional reduction.

Bosonic effective action for interacting fermions

We compare different versions of a bosonic description for systems of interacting fermions, with particular emphasis on the free energy functional. The bosonic effective action makes the issue of symmetries particularly transparent and we present for the Hubbard model an exact mapping between repulsive and attractive interactions. A systematic expansion for the bosonic effective action starts with a solution to the lowest order Schwinger-Dyson or gap equation. We propose a two particle irreducible formulation of an exact functional renormalization group equation for computations beyond leading order. On this basis we suggest a renormalized gap equation. This approach is compared with functional renormalization in a partially bosonized setting.

Nucleosynthesis and the variation of fundamental couplings

We determine the influence of a variation of the fundamental ``constants'' on the predicted helium abundance in Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. The analytic estimate is performed in two parts: the first step determines the dependence of the helium abundance on the nuclear physics parameters, while the second step relates those parameters to the fundamental couplings of particle physics. This procedure can incorporate in a flexible way the time variation of several couplings within a grand unified theory while keeping the nuclear physics computation separate from any model-dependent assumptions.

Holographic Branes

We discuss the properties of codimension-two branes and compare them to codimension-one branes. In particular, we show that for deficit angle branes the brane energy momentum tensor is uniquely related to integration constants in the bulk solution. We investigate chiral fermions whose wave functions are concentrated on the brane, while all their properties in the effective four-dimensional world can be inferred from the tail of the wave function in the bulk, thereby realizing a holographic principle. We propose holographic branes for which the knowledge of the bulk geometry is sufficient for the computation of all relevant properties of the observable particles, independently of the often unknown detailed physics of the branes.

Towards a renormalizable standard model without fundamental Higgs scalar

We investigate the possibility of constructing a renormalizable standard model with purely fermionic matter content. The Higgs scalar is replaced by point-like fermionic self-interactions with couplings growing large at the Fermi scale. An analysis of the UV behavior in the point-like approximation reveals a variety of non-Gaussian fixed points for the fermion couplings. If real, such fixed points would imply nonperturbative renormalizability and evade triviality of the Higgs sector. For point-like fermionic self-interactions and weak gauge couplings, one encounters a hierarchy problem similar to the one for a fundamental Higgs scalar.

Universality of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in gauge theories

We investigate one-flavor QCD with an additional chiral scalar field. For a large domain in the space of coupling constants, this model belongs to the same universality class as QCD, and the effects of the scalar become unobservable. This is connected to a ``bound-state fixed point'' of the renormalization flow for which all memory of the microscopic scalar interactions is lost. The QCD domain includes a microscopic scalar potential with minima at nonzero field. On the other hand, for a scalar mass term m^2 below a critical value m_c^2, the universality class is characterized by perturbative spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking which renders the quarks massive. Our renormalization group analysis shows how this universality class is continuously connected with the QCD universality class.

Gauge-Invariant Initial Conditions and Early Time Perturbations in Quintessence Universes

We present a systematic treatment of the initial conditions and evolution of cosmological perturbations in a universe containing photons, baryons, neutrinos, cold dark matter, and a scalar quintessence field. By formulating the evolution in terms of a differential equation involving a matrix acting on a vector comprised of the perturbation variables, we can use the familiar language of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. As the largest eigenvalue of the evolution matrix is fourfold degenerate, it follows that there are four dominant modes with non-diverging gravitational potential at early times, corresponding to adiabatic, cold dark matter isocurvature, baryon isocurvature and neutrino isocurvature perturbations. We conclude that quintessence does not lead to an additional independent mode.

First Order Chiral Phase Transition from a Six-fermion ''Instanton''-Interaction

We compute the first order chiral phase transition for an instanton motivated quark model with a local six-quark interaction. In order to compare different solutions of the gap equation we compute the bosonic effective action -- a two particle irreducible free energy functional. We find that the first order transition ends for a critical current quark mass, with continuous crossover for larger quark masses. Furthermore, we investigate different possible order parameters, including a color octet condensate. We also compare our formalism with mean field theory.

Flow Equations without Mean Field Ambiguity

We compare different methods used for non-perturbative calculations in strongly interacting fermionic systems. Mean field theory often shows a basic ambiguity related to the possibility to perform Fierz transformations. The results may then depend strongly on an unphysical parameter which reflects the choice of the mean field, thus limiting the reliability. This ambiguity is absent for Schwinger-Dyson equations or fermionic renormalization group equations. Also renormalization group equations in a partially bosonized setting can overcome the Fierz ambiguity if the truncation is chosen appropriately. This is reassuring since the partially bosonized renormalization group approach constitutes a very promising basis for the explicit treatment of condensates and spontaneous symmetry breaking even for situations where the bosonic correlation length is large.

Connection between Chiral Symmetry Restoration and Deconfinement

We propose a simple explanation for the connection between chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement in QCD at high temperature. In the Higgs description of the QCD vacuum both spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and effective gluon masses are generated by the condensate of a color octet quark-antiquark pair. The transition to the high temperature state proceeds by the melting of this condensate. Quarks and gluons become (approximately) massless at the same critical temperature. For instanton-dominated effective multiquark interactions and three light quarks with equal mass we find a first order phase transition at a critical temperature around 170 MeV.

Renormalization flow from UV to IR degrees of freedom

Within the framework of exact renormalization group flow equations, a scale-dependent transformation of the field variables provides for a continuous translation of UV to IR degrees of freedom. Using the gauged NJL model as an example, this translation results in a construction of partial bosonization at all scales. A fixed-point structure arises which makes it possible to distinguish between fundamental-particle and bound-state behavior of the scalar fields.

Quintessence and the cosmological constant

Quintessence -- the energy density of a slowly evolving scalar field -- may constitute a dynamical form of the homogeneous dark energy in the universe. We review the basic idea in the light of the cosmological constant problem. Cosmological observations or a time variation of fundamental `constants' can distinguish quintessence from a cosmological constant.
