Dipole coupling of a bilayer graphene quantum dot to a high-impedance microwave resonator

We implement circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) with quantum dots in bilayer graphene, a maturing material platform for semiconductor qubits that can host long-lived spin and valley states. The presented device combines a high-impedance ($Z_\mathrm{r} \approx 1 \mathrm{kΩ}$) superconducting microwave resonator with a double quantum dot electrostatically defined in a graphene-based van der Waals heterostructure. Electric dipole coupling between the subsystems allows the resonator to sense the electric susceptibility of the double quantum dot from which we reconstruct its charge stability diagram. We achieve sensitive and fast detection with a signal-to-noise ratio of 3.5 within 1 $μ\mathrm{s}$ integration time. The charge-photon interaction is quantified in the dispersive and resonant regimes by comparing the coupling-induced change in the resonator response to input-output theory, yielding a maximal coupling strength of $g/2π = 49.7 \mathrm{MHz}$. Our results introduce cQED as a probe for quantum dots in van der Waals materials and indicate a path toward coherent charge-photon coupling with bilayer graphene quantum dots.

Carbon-12 in the generalized Skyrme model

We study properties of the $^{12}$C nucleus within the generalized Skyrme model where, in addition to the standard massive Skyrme model, the sextic term and the pionic potential squared are included. We find that the model continues to accurately describe the rotational bands of the $^{12}$C nucleus. In addition, at variance with the case of the standard Skyrme model, it provides the correct energy ordering of the classical solutions which correspond to the ground state and the Hoyle state, respectively.

Moduli Space for Kink Collisions with Moving Center of Mass

We apply the collective coordinate model framework to describe collisions of a kink and an antikink with nonzero total momentum, i.e., when the solitons possess different velocities. The minimal moduli space with only two coordinates (the mutual distance and the position of the center of mass) is of a wormhole type, whose throat shrinks to a point for symmetric kinks. In this case, a singularity is formed. For non-zero momentum, it prohibits solutions where the solitons pass through each other. We show that this unphysical feature can be cured by enlarging the dimension of the moduli space, e.g., by the inclusion of internal modes.

Effective no-hair relations for spinning Boson Stars

Boson Stars are, at present, hypothetical compact stellar objects whose existence, however, could resolve several enigmas of current astrophysics. If they exist, either as independent astrophysical entities or as a matter admixture of more standard compact stars, then their imprints can probably be observed in the not-too-distant future from the gravitational signal of coalescing binaries in current and future GW detectors. Here we show that the multipole moments of rotating boson stars obey certain universal relations, valid for a broad set of models and various states in terms of the \textit{harmonic indices}. These universal relations are equivalent to a kind of no-hair theorem for this exotic matter, allowing to map these universal (i.e. model independent) multipoles to an equally universal gravitational field around the stellar object. Further, the multipole moments can be related to observable astrophysical quantities.

Skyrme crystals, nuclear matter and compact stars

A general review of the crystalline solutions of the generalized Skyrme model and their application to the study of cold nuclear matter at finite density and the Equation of State (EOS) of neutron stars is presented. For the relevant range of densities, the ground state of the Skyrme model in the three torus is shown to correspond to configurations with different symmetries, with a sequence of phase transitions between such configurations. The effects of nonzero finite isospin asymmetry are taken into account by the canonical quantization of isospin collective coordinates, and some thermodynamical and nuclear observables (such as the symmetry energy) are computed as a function of the density. We also explore the extension of the model to accommodate strange degrees of freedom, and find a first order transition for the condensation of kaons in the Skyrme crystal background in a thermodynamically consistent, non-perturbative way. Finally, an approximate EOS of dense matter is constructed by fitting the free parameters of the model to some nuclear observables close to saturation density, which are particularly relevant for the description of nuclear matter. The resulting neutron star mass-radius curves already reasonably satisfy current astrophysical constraints.

Universal relations for rotating Boson Stars

Boson stars represent a hypothetical exotic type of compact stellar object that may be observed from the gravitational signal of coalescing binaries in current and future GW detectors. In this work we show that the moment of inertia $I$, the (dimensionless) angular momentum $χ$ and the quadrupole moment $Q$ of rotating boson stars obey a universal relation, valid for a wide set of boson star models. Further, the obtained $I-χ-Q~$ relation clearly differs from its famous neutron star counterpart, providing us with an unequivocal diagnostic tool to distinguish boson stars from ordinary compact stars or other celestial bodies in GW observations. Such universal (i.e. model-independent) relations also provide a useful tool to probe the strong gravity regime of general relativity and to constrain the equation of state of matter inside compact stars.

Kaon condensation in skyrmion matter and compact stars

We address the possibility of the appearance of a charged kaon condensate in neutron star cores described within a generalized Skyrme model. Our treatment of strange degrees of freedom is based on the Bound State Approach by Callan and Klebanov, which allows to obtain an in-medium effective potential for the $s$-wave kaon condensate. We predict the onset of kaon condensation at a certain threshold density - whose value depends on the parameters of the model, and ranges between 1.5 and 2.5 times saturation density -, and obtain both the particle fractions and equation of state for dense matter in the kaon condensed phase. Finally, we discuss the effect of such condensates on the mass-radius curves and other observable properties of neutron stars with kaon condensed cores.

Quantum Skyrmion crystals and the symmetry energy of dense matter

The canonical quantization method for collective coordinates in crystalline configurations of the generalized Skyrme model is applied in order to find the quantum ground state of Skyrmion crystals and study the quantum corrections to the binding energy resulting from the isospin degrees of freedom. This leads to a consistent description of asymmetric nuclear matter within the Skyrme framework and allows us to compute the symmetry energy of the Skyrmionic crystal as a function of the baryon density, and to compare with recent observational constraints.

Dense matter equation of state and phase transitions from a Generalized Skyrme model

Skyrmion crystals are the field configurations which minimize the energy per baryon in the infinitely large topological charge sector of the Skyrme model, at least for sufficiently high density. They are, therefore, an important tool to describe the ground state of cold, symmetric nuclear matter at high density regimes. In this work, we analyze different crystalline phases and the existence of phase transitions between them within the generalized Skyrme model, with the ultimate goal of describing symmetric nuclear matter in a wide regime of densities. Furthermore, we propose a new energy-minimizing phase for densities lower than the nuclear saturation point ($n_0$) which also presents a good qualitative behavior in the zero density limit, thereby improving the description of strongly interacting matter in the region $n<n_0$.

High-quality Two-Dimensional Electron Gas in Undoped InSb Quantum Wells

We report on transport experiments through high-mobility gate-tunable undoped InSb QWs. Due to the elimination of any Si modulation doping, the gate-defined two-dimensional electron gases in the quantum wells display a significantly increased mobility of 260,000 cm$^2$/Vs at a rather low density of $2.4\times10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$. Using magneto-transport experiments, we characterize spin-orbit interactions by measuring weak antilocalization. Furthermore, by measuring Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in tilted magnetic fields, we find that the g-factor agrees with $k \cdot p$ theory calculations at low magnetic fields but grows with spin polarization and carrier density at high magnetic fields. Additionally, signatures of Ising quantum Hall ferromagnetism are found at filling factor $ν$ = 2 for tilt angles where the Landau level energy equals the Zeeman energy. Despite the high mobility, the undoped InSb quantum wells exhibit no fractional quantum Hall effect up to magnetic fields of 25 T.

A new consistent Neutron Star Equation of State from a Generalized Skyrme model

We propose a new equation of state for nuclear matter based on a generalized Skyrme model which is consistent with all current constraints on the observed properties of neutron stars. This generalized model depends only on two free parameters related to the ranges of pressure values at which different submodels are dominant, and which can be adjusted so that mass-radius and deformability constraints from astrophysical and gravitational wave measurements can be met. Our results support the Skyrme model and its generalizations as good candidates for a low energy effective field-theoretic description of nuclear matter even at extreme conditions such as those inside neutron stars.

Quasi-universal relations for generalized Skyrme stars

First proposed in 2013 by Yagi and Yunes, the quasi-universal \emph{I-Love-Q relations} consist of a set of relations between the moment of inertia, the spin-induced quadrupole moment and the electric quadrupolar tidal deformability of neutron stars which are independent of the Equation of State (EoS) within an accuracy of $\sim1\%$. In this work, we show that these relations hold for different Skyrme-based nuclear matter EoS and also for the star-like solutions of different Einstein-BPS-Skyrme-models, some of which do not even present a barotropic equation of state. Further, other quasi-universal relations are analyzed, and together with recent GW observations, we use them to select the generalized Skyrme model that better reproduces observations. Our results reaffirm both the universality of the \emph{I-Love-Q} relations and the suitability of generalized Skyrme models to describe nuclear matter inside neutron stars.

Skyrme models and nuclear matter equation of state

We investigate the role of pressure in a class of generalised Skyrme models. We introduce pressure as the trace of the spatial part of the energy-momentum tensor and show that it obeys the usual thermodynamical relation. Then, we compute analytically the mean-field equation of state in the high and medium pressure regimes by applying topological bounds on compact domains. The equation of state is further investigated numerically for the charge one skyrmions. We identify which term in a generalised Skyrme model is responsible for which part in the equation of state. Further, we compare our findings with the corresponding results in the Walecka model.

Integrability and Diffeomorphisms on Target Space

We briefly review the concepts of generalized zero curvature conditions and integrability in higher dimensions, where integrability in this context is related to the existence of infinitely many conservation laws. Under certain assumptions, it turns out that these conservation laws are, in fact, generated by a class of geometric target space transformations, namely the volume-preserving diffeomorphisms. We classify the possible conservation laws of field theories for the case of a three-dimensional target space. Further, we discuss some explicit examples.

Normalization of the chiral condensate in the massive Schwinger model

Within mass perturbation theory, already the first order contribution to the chiral condensate of the massive Schwinger model is UV divergent. We discuss the problem of choosing a proper normalization and, by making use of some bosonization results, we are able to choose a normalization so that the resulting chiral condensate may be compared, e.g., with lattice data.

Theta vacuum in different gauges

In some recent papers it is claimed that the physical significance of the vacuum angle theta for QCD-like theories depends on the chosen gauge condition. We criticise the arguments that were given in support of this claim, and show by explicit construction for the case of QED$_2$ that and why they fail, confirming thereby the commonly accepted point of view.

Renormal-order improvement of the Schwinger mass

The massive Schwinger model may be analysed by a perturbation expansion in the fermion mass. However, the results of this mass perturbation theory are sensible only for sufficiently small fermion mass. By performing a renormal-ordering, we arrive at a chiral perturbation expansion where the expansion parameter remains small even for large fermion mass. We use this renormal-ordered chiral perturbation theory for a computation of the Schwinger mass and compare our results with lattice computations.

Schwinger terms in Weyl-invariant and diffeomorphism-invariant 2-d scalar field theory

We compute the Schwinger terms in the energy-momentum tensor commutator algebra from the anomalies present in Weyl-invariant and diffeomorphism-invariant effective actions for two dimensional massless scalar fields in a gravitational background. We find that the Schwinger terms are not sensitive to the regularization procedure and that they are independent of the background metric.
