Gap statistics and higher correlations for geometric progressions modulo one

Koksma's equidistribution theorem from 1935 states that for Lebesgue almost every $α>1$, the fractional parts of the geometric progression $(α^{n})_{n\geq1}$ are equidistributed modulo one. In the present paper we sharpen this result by showing that for almost every $α>1$, the correlations of all finite orders and hence the normalized gaps of $(α^{n})_{n\geq1}$ mod 1 have a Poissonian limit distribution, thereby resolving a conjecture of the two first named authors. While an earlier approach used probabilistic methods in the form of martingale approximation, our reasoning in the present paper is of an analytic nature and based upon the estimation of oscillatory integrals. This method is robust enough to allow us to extend our results to a natural class of sub-lacunary sequences.

Circular automata synchronize with high probability

In this paper we prove that a uniformly distributed random circular automaton $\mathcal{A}_n$ of order $n$ synchronizes with high probability (whp). More precisely, we prove that $$ \mathbb{P}\left[\mathcal{A}_n \text{ synchronizes}\right] = 1- O\left(\frac{1}{n}\right). $$ The main idea of the proof is to translate the synchronization problem into properties of a random matrix; these properties are then handled with tools of the probabilistic method. Additionally, we provide an upper bound for the probability of synchronization of circular automata in terms of chromatic polynomials of circulant graphs.

On the pair correlations of powers of real numbers

A classical theorem of Koksma states that for Lebesgue almost every $x>1$ the sequence $(x^n)_{n=1}^{\infty}$ is uniformly distributed modulo one. In the present paper we extend Koksma's theorem to the pair correlation setting. More precisely, we show that for Lebesgue almost every $x>1$ the pair correlations of the fractional parts of $(x^n)_{n=1}^{\infty}$ are asymptotically Poissonian. The proof is based on a martingale approximation method.

The Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture with extra divergence

The Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture is a fundamental unsolved problem in metric number theory. It asserts that for every non-negative function $ψ:~\mathbb{N} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ for almost all reals $x$ there are infinitely many coprime solutions $(a,n)$ to the inequality $|nx - a| < ψ(n)$, provided that the series $\sum_{n=1}^\infty ψ(n) φ(n) /n$ is divergent. In the present paper we prove that the conjecture is true under the "extra divergence" assumption that divergence of the series still holds when $ψ(n)$ is replaced by $ψ(n) / (\log n)^\varepsilon$ for some $\varepsilon > 0$. This improves a result of Beresnevich, Harman, Haynes and Velani, and solves a problem posed by Haynes, Pollington and Velani.

On the number of gaps of sequences with Poissonian Pair Correlations

A sequence $(x_n)$ on the torus is said to have Poissonian pair correlations if $\# \{1\le i\neq j\le N: |x_i-x_j| \le s/N\}=2sN(1+o(1))$ for all reals $s>0$, as $N\to \infty$. It is known that, if $(x_n)$ has Poissonian pair correlations, then the number $g(n)$ of different gap lengths between neighboring elements of $\{x_1,\ldots,x_n\}$ cannot be bounded along every index subsequence $(n_t)$. First, we improve this by showing that the maximum among the multiplicities of the neighboring gap lengths of $\{x_1,\ldots,x_n\}$ is $o(n)$, as $n\to \infty$. Furthermore, we show that, for every function $f: \mathbf{N}^+\to \mathbf{N}^+$ with $\lim_n f(n)=\infty$, there exists a sequence $(x_n)$ with Poissonian pair correlations and such that $g(n) \le f(n)$ for all sufficiently large $n$. This answers negatively a question posed by G. Larcher.

Decoupling theorems for the Duffin-Schaeffer problem

The Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture is a central open problem in metric number theory. Let $ψ~\mathbb{N} \mapsto \mathbb{R}$ be a non-negative function, and set $\mathcal{E}_n :=\bigcup \left( \frac{a - ψ(n)}{n},\frac{a+ψ(n)}{n} \right)$, where the union is taken over all $a \in \{1, \dots, n\}$ which are co-prime to $n$. Then the conjecture asserts that almost all $x \in [0,1]$ are contained in infinitely many sets $\mathcal{E}_n$, provided that the series of the measures of $\mathcal{E}_n$ is divergent. At the core of the conjecture is the problem of controlling the measure of the pairwise overlaps $\mathcal{E}_m \cap \mathcal{E}_n$, in dependence on $m, n, ψ(m)$ and $ψ(n)$. In the present paper we prove upper bounds for the measures of these overlaps, which show that globally the degree of dependence in the set system $(\mathcal{E}_n)_{n \geq 1}$ is significantly smaller than supposed. As applications, we obtain significantly improved "extra divergence" and "slow divergence" variants of the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture.

On large values of $L(σ,χ)$

In recent years a variant of the resonance method was developed which allowed to obtain improved $Ω$-results for the Riemann zeta function along vertical lines in the critical strip. In the present paper we show how this method can be adapted to prove the existence of large values of $|L(σ, χ)|$ in the range $σ\in (1/2,1]$, and to estimate the proportion of characters for which $|L(σ, χ)|$ is of such a large order. More precisely, for every fixed $σ\in (1/2,1)$ we show that for all sufficiently large $q$ there is a non-principal character $χ$ (mod $q$) such that $\log |L(σ,χ)| \geq C(σ) (\log q)^{1-σ} (\log \log q)^{-σ}$. In the case $σ=1$ we show that there is a non-principal character $χ$ (mod $q$) for which $|L(1,χ)| \geq e^γ\left(\log_2 q + \log_3 q - C \right)$. In both cases, our results essentially match the prediction for the actual order of such extreme values, based on probabilistic models.

There is no Khintchine threshold for metric pair correlations

We consider sequences of the form $\left(a_{n} α\right)_{n}$ mod 1, where $α\in\left[0,1\right]$ and where $\left(a_{n}\right)_{n}$ is a strictly increasing sequence of positive integers. If the asymptotic distribution of the pair correlations of this sequence follows the Poissonian model for almost all $α$ in the sense of Lebesgue measure, we say that $(a_n)_n$ has the metric pair correlation property. Recent research has revealed a connection between the metric theory of pair correlations of such sequences, and the additive energy of truncations of $(a_n)_{n}$. Bloom, Chow, Gafni and Walker speculated that there might be a convergence/divergence criterion which fully characterises the metric pair correlation property in terms of the additive energy, similar to Khintchine's criterion in the metric theory of Diophantine approximation. In the present paper we give a negative answer to such speculations, by showing that such a criterion does not exist. To this end, we construct a sequence $(a_n)_n$ having large additive energy which, however, maintains the metric pair correlation property.

Triple correlation and long gaps in the spectrum of flat tori

We evaluate the triple correlation of eigenvalues of the Laplacian on generic flat tori in an averaged sense. As two consequence we show that (a) the limit inferior (resp. limit superior) of the triple correlation is almost surely at most (resp. at least) Poissonian, and that (b) almost all flat tori contain infinitely many gaps in their spectrum that are at least 2.006 times longer than the average gap. The significance of the constant 2.006 lies in the fact that there exist sequences with Poissonian pair correlation and with consecutive spacings bounded uniformly from above by 2, as we also prove in this paper. Thus our result goes beyond what can be deduced solely from the Poissonian behavior of the pair correlation.

Normal numbers with digit dependencies

We give metric theorems for the property of Borel normality for real numbers under the assumption of digit dependencies in their expansion in a given integer base. We quantify precisely how much digit dependence can be allowed such that, still, almost all real numbers are normal. Our theorem states that almost all real numbers are normal when at least slightly more than $\log \log n$ consecutive digits with indices starting at position $n$ are independent. As the main application, we consider the Toeplitz set $T_P$, which is the set of all sequences $a_1a_2 \ldots $ of symbols from $\{0, \ldots, b-1\}$ such that $a_n$ is equal to $a_{pn}$, for every $p$ in $P$ and $n=1,2,\ldots$. Here $b$ is an integer base and $P$ is a finite set of prime numbers. We show that almost every real number whose base $b$ expansion is in $T_P$ is normal to base $b$. In the case when $P$ is the singleton set $\{2\}$ we prove that more is true: almost every real number whose base $b$ expansion is in $T_P$ is normal to all integer bases. We also consider the Toeplitz transform which maps the set of all sequences to the set $T_P$ and we characterize the normal sequences whose Toeplitz transform is normal as well.

On Quasi-Energy-Spectra, Pair Correlations of Sequences and Additive Combinatorics

The investigation of the pair correlation statistics of sequences was initially motivated by questions concerning quasi-energy-spectra of quantum systems. However, the subject has been developed far beyond its roots in mathematical physics, and many challenging number-theoretic questions on the distribution of the pair correlations of certain sequences are still open. We give a short introduction into the subject, recall some known results and open problems, and in particular explain the recently established connection between the distribution of pair correlations of sequences on the torus and certain concepts from additive combinatorics. Furthermore, we slightly improve a result recently given by Jean Bourgain.

Extreme values of the Riemann zeta function on the 1-line

We prove that there are arbitrarily large values of $t$ such that $|ζ(1+it)| \geq e^γ (\log_2 t + \log_3 t) + \mathcal{O}(1)$. This essentially matches the prediction for the optimal lower bound in a conjecture of Granville and Soundararajan. Our proof uses a new variant of the "long resonator" method. While earlier implementations of this method crucially relied on a "sparsification" technique to control the mean-square of the resonator function, in the present paper we exploit certain self-similarity properties of a specially designed resonator function.

Irregularities of distributions and extremal sets in combinatorial complexity theory

In 2004 the second author of the present paper proved that a point set in $[0,1]^d$ which has star-discrepancy at most $\varepsilon$ must necessarily consist of at least $c_{abs} d \varepsilon^{-1}$ points. Equivalently, every set of $n$ points in $[0,1]^d$ must have star-discrepancy at least $c_{abs} d n^{-1}$. The original proof of this result uses methods from Vapnik--Chervonenkis theory and from metric entropy theory. In the present paper we give an elementary combinatorial proof for the same result, which is based on identifying a sub-box of $[0,1]^d$ which has approximately $d$ elements of the point set on its boundary. Furthermore, we show that a point set for which no such box exists is rather irregular, and must necessarily have a large star-discrepancy.

On the construction of absolutely normal numbers

We give a construction of an absolutely normal real number $x$ such that for every integer $b $ greater than or equal to $2$, the discrepancy of the first $N$ terms of the sequence $(b^n x \mod 1)_{n\geq 0}$ is of asymptotic order $\mathcal{O}(N^{-1/2})$. This is below the order of discrepancy which holds for almost all real numbers. Even the existence of absolutely normal numbers having a discrepancy of such a small asymptotic order was not known before.

On the size of the largest empty box amidst a point set

The problem of finding the largest empty axis-parallel box amidst a point configuration is a classical problem in computational geometry. It is known that the volume of the largest empty box is of asymptotic order $1/n$ for $n\to\infty$ and fixed dimension $d$. However, it is natural to assume that the volume of the largest empty box increases as $d$ gets larger. In the present paper we prove that this actually is the case: for every set of $n$ points in $[0, 1]^d$ there exists an empty box of volume at least $c_d n^{-1}$ , where $c_d \to \infty$ as $d\to \infty$. More precisely, $c_d$ is at least of order roughly $\log d$.

Tusnády's problem, the transference principle, and non-uniform QMC sampling

It is well-known that for every $N \geq 1$ and $d \geq 1$ there exist point sets $x_1, \dots, x_N \in [0,1]^d$ whose discrepancy with respect to the Lebesgue measure is of order at most $(\log N)^{d-1} N^{-1}$. In a more general setting, the first author proved together with Josef Dick that for any normalized measure $μ$ on $[0,1]^d$ there exist points $x_1, \dots, x_N$ whose discrepancy with respect to $μ$ is of order at most $(\log N)^{(3d+1)/2} N^{-1}$. The proof used methods from combinatorial mathematics, and in particular a result of Banaszczyk on balancings of vectors. In the present note we use a version of the so-called transference principle together with recent results on the discrepancy of red-blue colorings to show that for any $μ$ there even exist points having discrepancy of order at most $(\log N)^{d-\frac12} N^{-1}$, which is almost as good as the discrepancy bound in the case of the Lebesgue measure.

Pair correlations and equidistribution

A deterministic sequence of real numbers in the unit interval is called \emph{equidistributed} if its empirical distribution converges to the uniform distribution. Furthermore, the limit distribution of the pair correlation statistics of a sequence is called Poissonian if the number of pairs $x_k,x_l \in (x_n)_{1 \leq n \leq N}$ which are within distance $s/N$ of each other is asymptotically $\sim 2sN$. A randomly generated sequence has both of these properties, almost surely. There seems to be a vague sense that having Poissonian pair correlations is a "finer" property than being equidistributed. In this note we prove that this really is the case, in a precise mathematical sense: a sequence whose asymptotic distribution of pair correlations is Poissonian must necessarily be equidistributed. Furthermore, for sequences which are not equidistributed we prove that the square-integral of the asymptotic density of the sequence gives a lower bound for the asymptotic distribution of the pair correlations.

Additive Energy and the Hausdorff dimension of the exceptional set in metric pair correlation problems

For a sequence of integers $\{a(x)\}_{x \geq 1}$ we show that the distribution of the pair correlations of the fractional parts of $\{ \langle αa(x) \rangle \}_{x \geq 1}$ is asymptotically Poissonian for almost all $α$ if the additive energy of truncations of the sequence has a power savings improvement over the trivial estimate. Furthermore, we give an estimate for the Hausdorff dimension of the exceptional set as a function of the density of the sequence and the power savings in the energy estimate. A consequence of these results is that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of $α$ such that $\{\langle αx^d \rangle\}$ fails to have Poissonian pair correlation is at most $\frac{d+2}{d+3} < 1$. This strengthens a result of Rudnick and Sarnak which states that the exceptional set has zero Lebesgue measure. On the other hand, classical examples imply that the exceptional set has Hausdorff dimension at least $\frac{2}{d+1}$. An appendix by Jean Bourgain was added after the first version of this paper was written. In this appendix two problems raised in the paper are solved.
