Extended Higgs sectors, effective field theory and Higgs phenomenology

We consider the phenomenological implications of charged scalar extensions of the SM Higgs sector in addition to EFT couplings of this new state to SM matter. We perform a detailed investigation of modifications of loop-induced decays of the 125 GeV Higgs boson, which receives corrections from the propagating charged scalars alongside one-loop EFT operator insertions and demonstrate that the interplay of $H\to γγ$ and $H\to Zγ$ decays can be used to clarify the additional states phenomenology in case a discovery is made in the future. In parallel, EFT interactions of the charged Higgs can lead to a decreased sensitivity to the virtual presence of charged Higgs states, which can significantly weaken the constraints that are naively expected from the precisely measured $H\to γγ$ branching ratio. Again $H\to Zγ$ measurements provide complementary sensitivity that can be exploited in the future.

Sensing Higgs cascade decays through memory

Beyond the Standard Model scenarios with extensions of the Higgs sector typically predict new resonances that can undergo a series of cascade decays to detectable Standard Model particles. On one hand, sensitivity to such signatures will contribute to the full reconstruction of the extended Higgs potential if a new physics discovery will be made. On the other hand, such cascade decays could be dominant decay channels, thus being potentially the best motivated signatures to achieve a new physics discovery in the first place. In this work, we show how the long short-term memory that is encoded in the cascade decays' phenomenology can be exploited in discriminating the signal from the background, where no such information is present. In parallel, we demonstrate for theoretically motivated scenarios that such an approach provides improved sensitivity compared to more standard analyses, where only information about the signal's final state kinematics is included.

Di-Higgs resonance searches in weak boson fusion

The search for di-Higgs final states is typically limited at the LHC to the dominant gluon fusion channels, with weak boson fusion only assuming a spectator role. In this work, we demonstrate that when it comes to searches for resonant structures that arise from iso-singlet mixing in the Higgs sector, the weak boson fusion sideline can indeed contribute to winning the discovery game. Extending existing experimental resonance searches by including both contributions is therefore crucial.

Electroweak Top Couplings, Partial Compositeness and Top Partner Searches

Partial top quark compositeness is a crucial aspect of theories with strong electroweak symmetry breaking. Together with the heavy top partners that lift the top quark mass to its observed value, these theories predict correlated modifications of the top quark's electroweak couplings. Associated measurements therefore provide direct constraints on the ultraviolet structure of the underlying hypercolour dynamics. In this paper we employ a minimal version of top compositeness to discuss how measurements related to the top's electroweak gauge interactions can inform the potential composite nature of the TeV scale. In doing so, we identify the dominant factors that limit the BSM sensitivity. Extrapolating to a future 100 TeV hadron collider, we demonstrate that top quark measurements performed at highest precision can provide complementary information to resonance search by performing a representative resonant top partner search that specifically targets the correlated resonant electroweak top partner signatures.

The Weinberg Angle and 5D RGE effects in a SO(11) GUT theory

The Weinberg angle is an important parameter in Grand Unified Theories (GUT) as its size is crucially influenced by the assumption of unification. In scenarios with different steps of symmetry breaking, in particular in models that involve gauge-Higgs unification, the connection of the ultraviolet theory and the TeV scale-relevant, effective Standard Model description is an important test of the models' validity. In this work, we consider a 6D gauge-Higgs unification GUT scenario and explore the TeV scale-GUT relation using a detailed RGE analysis in the 4D and 5D regimes of the theory, including constraints from LHC measurements. We show that such can be consistent with unification in the light of current constraints, while the Weinberg angle likely translates into concrete conditions on the fermion sector in the higher dimensional setup.

Power meets Precision to explore the Symmetric Higgs Portal

We perform a comprehensive study of collider aspects of a Higgs portal scenario that is protected by an unbroken ${\mathbb{Z}}_2$ symmetry. If the mass of the Higgs portal scalar is larger than half the Higgs mass, this scenario becomes very difficult to detect. We provide a detailed investigation of the model's parameter space based on analyses of the direct collider sensitivity at the LHC as well as at future lepton and hadron collider concepts and analyse the importance of these searches for this scenario in the context of expected precision Higgs and electroweak measurements. In particular we also consider the associated electroweak oblique corrections that we obtain in a first dedicated two-loop calculation for comparisons with the potential of, e.g., GigaZ. The currently available collider projections corroborate an FCC-hh 100 TeV as a very sensitive tool to search for such a weakly-coupled Higgs sector extension, driven by small statistical uncertainties over a large range of energy coverage. Crucially, however, this requires good theoretical control. Alternatively, Higgs signal-strength measurements at an optimal FCC-ee sensitivity level could yield comparable constraints.

Effective field theory and scalar extensions of the top quark sector

Effective field theory (EFT) approaches are widely used at the LHC, such that it is important to study their validity, and ease of matching to specific new physics models. In this paper, we consider an extension of the SM in which a top quark couples to a new heavy scalar. We find the dimension six operators generated by this theory at low energy, and match the EFT to the full theory up to NLO precision in the simplified model coupling. We then examine the range of validity of the EFT description in top pair production, finding excellent validity even if the scalar mass is only slightly above LHC energies, provided NLO corrections are included. In the absence of the latter, the LO EFT overestimates kinematic distributions, such that over-optimistic constraints on BSM contributions are obtained. We next examine the constraints on the EFT and full models that are expected to be obtained from both top pair and four top production at the LHC, finding for low scalar masses that both processes show similar exclusion power. However, for larger masses, estimated LHC uncertainties push constraints into the non-perturbative regime, where the full model is difficult to analyse, and thus not perturbatively matchable to the EFT. This highlights the necessity to improve uncertainties of SM hypotheses in top final states.

Phenomenology of GUT-inspired gauge-Higgs unification

We perform a detailed investigation of a Grand Unified Theory (GUT)-inspired theory of gauge-Higgs unification. Scanning the model's parameter space with adapted numerical techniques, we contrast the scenario's low energy limit with existing SM and collider search constraints. We discuss potential modifications of di-Higgs phenomenology at hadron colliders as sensitive probes of the gauge-like character of the Higgs self-interactions and find that for phenomenologically viable parameter choices modifications of the order of 20\% compared to the SM cross section can be expected. While these modifications are challenging to observe at the LHC, a future 100 TeV hadron collider might be able to constrain the scenario through more precise di-Higgs measurements. We point out alternative signatures that can be employed to constrain this model in the near future.

Di-Higgs Peaks and Top Valleys: Interference Effects in Higgs Sector Extensions

In models with extended scalars and CP violation, resonance searches in double Higgs final states stand in competition with related searches in top quark final states as optimal channels for the discovery of beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics. This complementarity is particularly relevant for benchmark scenarios that aim to highlight multi-Higgs production as a standard candle for the study of BSM phenomena. In this note, we compare interference effects in $t\bar t$ final states with correlated phenomena in double Higgs production in the complex singlet and the complex 2-Higgs-Doublet Models. Our results indicate that the BSM discovery potential in di-Higgs searches can be underestimated in comparison to $t\bar t $ resonance searches. Top pair final states are typically suppressed due to destructive signal-background interference, while $hh$ final states can be enhanced due to signal-signal interference. For parameter choices where the two heavy Higgs resonances are well separated in mass, top final states are suppressed relative to the naive signal expectation, while estimates of the production cross section times branching ratio remain accurate at the ${\cal{O}}(10\%)$ level for double Higgs final states.

Higgs phenomenology as a probe of sterile neutrinos

Physics beyond the Standard Model can manifest itself as both new light states and heavy degrees of freedom. In this paper, we assume that the former comprise only a sterile neutrino, $N$. Therefore, the most agnostic description of the new physics is given by an effective field theory built upon the Standard Model fields as well as $N$. We show that Higgs phenomenology provides a sensitive and potentially crucial tool to constrain effective gauge interactions of sterile neutrinos, not yet probed by current experiments. In parallel, this motivates a range of new Higgs decay channels with clean signatures as candidates for the next LHC runs, including $h\to γ+p_T^\text{miss}$ and $h\to γγ+p_T^\text{miss}$.

Probing the Symmetric Higgs Portal with Di-Higgs Boson Production

A coupling of a scalar, charged under an unbroken global U(1) symmetry, to the Standard Model via the Higgs portal is one of the simplest gateways to a dark sector. Yet, for masses $m_{S}\geq m_{H}/2$ there are few probes of such an interaction. In this note we evaluate the sensitivity to the Higgs portal coupling of di-Higgs boson production at the LHC as well as at a future high energy hadron collider, FCC-hh, taking into account the full momentum dependence of the process. This significantly impacts the sensitivity compared to estimates of changes in the Higgs-coupling based on the effective potential. We also compare our findings to precision single Higgs boson probes such as the cross section for vector boson associated Higgs production at a future lepton collider, e.g. FCC-ee, as well as searches for missing energy based signatures.

Proposal for the validation of Monte Carlo implementations of the standard model effective field theory

We propose a procedure to cross-validate Monte Carlo implementations of the standard model effective field theory. It is based on the numerical comparison of squared amplitudes computed at specific phase-space and parameter points in pairs of implementations. Interactions are fully linearised in the effective field theory expansion. The squares of linear effective field theory amplitudes and their interference with standard-model contributions are compared separately. Such pairwise comparisons are primarily performed at tree level and a possible extension to the one-loop level is also briefly considered. We list the current standard model effective field theory implementations and the comparisons performed to date.

Higgs Physics: It ain't over till it's over

We review the theoretical underpinning of the Higgs mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking and the experimental status of Higgs measurements from a pedagogical perspective. The possibilities and motivations for new physics in the symmetry breaking sector are discussed along with current measurements. A focus is on the implications of measurements in the Higgs sector for theoretical insights into extensions of the Standard Model. We also discuss of future prospects for Higgs physics and new analysis techniques.

Approaching robust EFT limits for CP-violation in the Higgs sector

Constraining CP-violating interactions in effective field theory (EFT) of dimension six faces two challenges. Firstly, degeneracies in the multi-dimensional space of Wilson coefficients have to be lifted. Secondly, quadratic contributions of CP-odd dimension six operators are difficult to disentangle from squared contributions of CP-even dimension six operators and from linear contributions of dimension eight operators. Both of these problems are present when new sources of CP-violation are present in the interactions between the Higgs boson and heavy strongly-interacting fermions. We show that degeneracies in the Wilson coefficients can be removed by combining measurements of Higgs-plus-two-jet production via gluon fusion with measurements of top-pair associated Higgs production. In addition, we demonstrate that the sensitivity of the analysis can be improved by exploiting the top-quark threshold in the gluon fusion process. Finally, we substantiate a perturbative argument about the validity of EFT by comparing the quadratic and linear contributions from CP-odd dimension six operators and use this to show explicitly that high statistics measurements at future colliders enable the extraction of perturbatively robust constraints on the associated Wilson coefficients.

The $\hat{H}$-Parameter: An Oblique Higgs View

We study, from theoretical and phenomenological angles, the Higgs boson oblique parameter $\hat{H}$, as the hallmark of off-shell Higgs physics. $\hat{H}$ is defined as the Wilson coefficient of the sole dimension-6 operator that modifies the Higgs boson propagator, within a Universal EFT. Theoretically, we describe self-consistency conditions on Wilson coefficients, derived from the Källén-Lehmann representation. Phenomenologically, we demonstrate that the process $gg\to h^\ast \to VV$ is insensitive to propagator corrections from $\hat{H}$, and instead advertise four-top production as an effective high-energy probe of off-shell Higgs behaviour, crucial to break flat directions in the EFT.

Angles on CP-violation in Higgs boson interactions

CP-violation in the Higgs sector remains a possible source of the baryon asymmetry of the universe. Recent differential measurements of signed angular distributions in Higgs boson production provide a general experimental probe of the CP structure of Higgs boson interactions. We interpret these measurements using the Standard Model Effective Field Theory and show that they do not distinguish the various CP-violating operators that couple the Higgs and gauge fields. However, the constraints can be sharpened by measuring additional CP-sensitive observables and exploiting phase-space-dependent effects. Using these observables, we demonstrate that perturbatively meaningful constraints on CP-violating operators can be obtained at the LHC with luminosities of ${\cal{O}}$(100/fb). Our results provide a roadmap to a global Higgs boson coupling analysis that includes CP-violating effects.

Effective Field Theory in the top sector: do multijets help?

Many studies of possible new physics employ effective field theory (EFT), whereby corrections to the Standard Model take the form of higher-dimensional operators, suppressed by a large energy scale. Fits of such a theory to data typically use parton level observables, which limits the datasets one can use. In order to theoretically model search channels involving many additional jets, it is important to include tree-level matrix elements matched to a parton shower algorithm, and a suitable matching procedure to remove the double counting of additional radiation. There are then two potential problems: (i) EFT corrections are absent in the shower, leading to an extra source of discontinuities in the matching procedure; (ii) the uncertainty in the matching procedure may be such that no additional constraints are obtained from observables sensitive to radiation. In this paper, we review why the first of these is not a problem in practice, and perform a detailed study of the second. In particular, we quantify the additional constraints on EFT expected from top pair plus multijet events, relative to inclusive top pair production alone.
