The Non-Proper Dissipative Extensions of a Dual Pair

We consider dissipative operators $A$ of the form $A=S+iV$, where both $S$ and $V\geq 0$ are assumed to be symmetric but neither of them needs to be (essentially) selfadjoint. After a brief discussion of the relation of the operators $S\pm iV $to dual pairs with the so called common core property, we present a necessary and suffcient condition for any extension of $A$ with domain contained in $\mathcal{D}((S-iV)^*)$ to be dissipative. We will discuss several special situations in which this condition can be expressed in a particularly nice form -- accessible to direct computations. Examples involving ordinary differential operators are given.

Droplet states in quantum XXZ spin systems on general graphs

We study XXZ spin systems on general graphs. In particular, we describe the formation of droplet states near the bottom of the spectrum in the Ising phase of the model, where the Z-term dominates the XX-term. As key tools we use particle number conservation of XXZ systems and symmetric products of graphs with their associated adjacency matrices and Laplacians. Of particular interest to us are strips and multi-dimensional Euclidean lattices, for which we discuss the existence of spectral gaps above the droplet regime. We also prove a Combes-Thomas bound which shows that the eigenstates in the droplet regime are exponentially small perturbations of strict (classical) droplets.

The Proper Dissipative Extensions of a Dual Pair

Let $A$ and $(-\widetilde{A})$ be dissipative operators on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ and let $(A,\widetilde{A})$ form a dual pair, i.e. $A\subset\widetilde{A}^*$, resp.\ $\widetilde{A}\subset A^*$. We present a method of determining the proper dissipative extensions $\widehat{A}$ of this dual pair, i.e. $A\subset \widehat{A}\subset\widetilde{A}^*$ provided that $\mathcal{D}(A)\cap\mathcal{D}(\widetilde{A})$ is dense in $\mathcal{H}$. Applications to symmetric operators, symmetric operators perturbed by a relatively bounded dissipative operator and more singular differential operators are discussed. Finally, we investigate the stability of the numerical range of the different dissipative extensions.

The infinite XXZ quantum spin chain revisited: Structure of low lying spectral bands and gaps

We study the structure of the spectrum of the infinite XXZ quantum spin chain, an anisotropic version of the Heisenberg model. The XXZ chain Hamiltonian preserves the number of down spins (or particle number), allowing to represent it as a direct sum of N-particle interacting discrete Schrödinger-type operators restricted to the fermionic subspace. In the Ising phase of the model we use this representation to give a detailed determination of the band and gap structure of the spectrum at low energy. In particular, we show that at sufficiently strong anisotropy the so-called droplet bands are separated from higher spectral bands uniformly in the particle number. Our presentation of all necessary background is self-contained and can serve as an introduction to the mathematical theory of the Heisenberg and XXZ quantum spin chains.
