Leveraging Deep Learning for Object and Position Recognition of Load Carriers for Autonomous Logistics Vehicles

This work explores the use of artificial intelligence in mobile robotics to achieve autonomous detection and pose estimation of load carriers for automated pickup. A deep neural network is designed to recognize predefined landmarks on the carrier from RGBD data; these landmarks are then used to compute the carrier's pose. The network operates directly on RGBD images to estimate landmark positions, which form the basis for determining the carrier's location. The approach is validated in extensive experiments and comprises both software and hardware implementations. A deep learning-based framework is presented to detect load carriers and estimate their pose for use with autonomous logistics vehicles. Our method uses a convolutional neural network to identify characteristic reference points on the carrier from RGBD input and computes its pose by combining these inferred landmarks with prior geometric knowledge. Experiments show that the resulting accuracy is sufficient for reliable load carrier detection in industrial environments, confirming the suitability of the method for autonomous intralogistics applications.

Foundation-Model-Based Agents in Industrial Automation: Purposes, Capabilities, and Open Challenges

Foundation models, particularly large language models, are increasingly integrated into agent architectures for industrial tasks such as decision support, process monitoring, and engineering automation. Yet evidence on their purposes, capabilities, and limitations remains fragmented across domains. This work examines how mature foundation-model-based agent systems are in industrial contexts, how their functional profile differs from conventional agent systems, and which limitations persist. A systematic literature survey following the PRISMA 2020 guideline is presented, screening 2,341 publications and synthesising a corpus of 88 publications through a structured coding scheme. The results show that reported systems are predominantly at prototype and early validation stages (75.0% at TRL 4-6), with deployment-oriented evidence remaining rare (9.1%). Operational goals are most frequently positioned in user assistance, monitoring, and process optimisation, while conventional production-control purposes such as planning and scheduling are less prominent. Compared with an established baseline for industrial agent systems, the capability profile reveals substantial gains in human interaction (+37%) and dealing with uncertainty (+35%), but a pronounced deficit in negotiation (-39%). The most widely reported limitations concern lack of generalization, hallucination and output instability, data scarcity, and inference latency. A working definition of foundation-model-based industrial agents is also proposed, bridging conventional agent theory, automation-engineering standards, and the foundation-model paradigm.

Status and Future Prospects of the Standardization Framework Industry 4.0: A European Perspective

The rapid development of Industry 4.0 technologies requires robust and comprehensive standardization to ensure interoperability, safety and efficiency in the Industry of the Future. This paper examines the fundamental role and functionality of standardization, with a particular focus on its importance in Europe's regulatory framework. Based on this, selected topics in context of standardization activities in context intelligent manufacturing and digital twins are highlighted and, by that, an overview of the Industry 4.0 standards framework is provided. This paper serves both as an informative guide to the existing standards in Industry 4.0 with respect to Artificial Intelligence and Digital Twins, and as a call to action for increased cooperation between standardization bodies and the research community. By fostering such collaboration, we aim to facilitate the continued development and implementation of standards that will drive innovation and progress in the manufacturing sector.

Model-driven Engineering of Manufacturing Automation Software Projects -- A SysML-based Approach

This paper comprises a SysML-based approach to support the model-driven engineering (MDE) of Manufacturing Automation Software Projects (MASP). The Systems Modeling Language (SysML) is adapted to define the SysML-AT (SysML for automation), a specialized language profile that covers (non-)functional requirements, corresponding software applications and properties of proprietary hardware components. Furthermore, SysML-AT supports an automated software generation for run-time environments conforming to IEC 61131-3. A prototypical tool support was realized for adapted SysML Parametric Diagrams (PD) inside an industrial automation software development tool. Coupling the model editor and online data from the provided run-time environment enables direct debugging inside the model. The approach was evaluated by several case studies and additional usability experiments. With the latter, the suitability of the MDE approach for future users was proven.
