Phases of 5d SCFTs from M-/F-theory on Non-Flat Fibrations

We initiate the systematic investigation of non-flat resolutions of non-minimal singularities in elliptically fibered Calabi--Yau threefolds. Compactification of M-theory on these geometries provides an alternative approach to studying phases of five-dimensional superconformal field theories (5d SCFTs). We argue that such resolutions capture non-trivial holonomies in the circle reduction of the 6d conformal matter theory that is the F-theory interpretation of the singular fibration. As these holonomies become mass deformations in the 5d theory, non-flat resolutions furnish a novel method in the attempt to classify 5d SCFTs through 6d SCFTs on a circle. A particularly pleasant aspect of this proposal is the explicit embedding of the 5d SCFT's enhanced flavor group inside that of the parent 6d SCFT, which can be read off from the geometry. We demonstrate these features in toric examples which realize 5d theories up to rank four.

A Note on Non-Flat Points in the $SU(5)\times U(1)$ PQ F-Theory Model

Non-flat fibrations often appear in F-theory GUT models, and their interpretation is still somewhat mysterious. In this note we explore this issue in a model of particular phenomenological interest, the global $SU(5)\times U(1)$ Peccei-Quinn F-theory model. We present evidence that co-dimension three non-flat fibres give rise to higher order couplings in the effective four-dimensional superpotential. More specifically, in our example we find $\mathbf{10}\, \mathbf{5}\, \mathbf{5}\, \mathbf{5}$ couplings.

A Geometrical Upper Bound on the Inflaton Range

We argue that in type IIB LVS string models, after including the leading order moduli stabilisation effects, the moduli space for the remaining flat directions is compact due the Calabi-Yau Kähler cone conditions. In cosmological applications, this gives an inflaton field range which is bounded from above, in analogy with recent results from the weak gravity and swampland conjectures. We support our claim by explicitly showing that it holds for all LVS vacua with $h^{1,1} = 3$ obtained from 4-dimensional reflexive polytopes. In particular, we first search for all Calabi-Yau threefolds from the Kreuzer-Skarke list with $h^{1,1}=2$, $3$ and $4$ which allow for LVS vacua, finding several new LVS geometries which were so far unknown. We then focus on the $h^{1,1} = 3$ cases and show that the Kähler cones of all toric hypersurface threefolds force the effective 1-dimensional LVS moduli space to be compact. We find that the moduli space size can generically be trans-Planckian only for K3 fibred examples.

Non-geometric heterotic backgrounds and 6D SCFTs/LSTs

We study ${\mathcal N}=(1,0)$ six-dimensional theories living on defects of non-geometric backgrounds of the $E_8\times E_8$ and the $\text{Spin}(32)/{\mathbb Z}_2$ heterotic strings. Such configurations can be analyzed by dualizing to F-theory on elliptic K3-fibered non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds. The majority of the resulting dual threefolds turn out to contain singularities which do not admit a crepant resolution. When the singularities can be resolved crepantly, the theories living on the defect are explicitly determined and reveal a form of duality in which distinct defects are described by the same IR fixed point. In particular, a subclass of non-geometric defects corresponds to SCFTs/LSTs arising from small heterotic instantons on ADE singularities.

Global Orientifolded Quivers with Inflation

We describe global embeddings of fractional D3 branes at orientifolded singularities in type IIB flux compactifications. We present an explicit Calabi-Yau example where the chiral visible sector lives on a local orientifolded quiver while non-perturbative effects, $α'$ corrections and a T-brane hidden sector lead to full closed string moduli stabilisation in a de Sitter vacuum. The same model can also successfully give rise to inflation driven by a del Pezzo divisor. Our model represents the first explicit Calabi-Yau example featuring both an inflationary and a chiral visible sector.

Non-Geometric Vacua of the $\mathbf{\text{Spin}(32)/\mathbb Z_2}$ Heterotic String and Little String Theories

We study a class of 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ non-geometric vacua of the $\text{Spin}(32)/\mathbb Z_2$ heterotic string which can be understood as fibrations of genus-two curves over a complex one-dimensional base. The 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ theories living on the defects that arise when the genus-two fiber degenerates at a point of the base are analyzed by dualizing to F-theory on elliptic K3-fibered non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds. We consider all possible degenerations of genus-two curves and systematically attempt to resolve the singularities of the dual threefolds. As in the analogous non-geometric vacua of the $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic string, we find that many of the resulting dual threefolds contain singularities which do not admit a crepant resolution. When the singularities can be resolved crepantly, we determine the emerging effective theories which turn out to be little string theories at a generic point on their tensor branch. We also observe a form of duality in which theories living on distinct defects are the same.

Algebraic Cycles and Local Anomalies in F-Theory

We introduce a set of identities in the cohomology ring of elliptic fibrations which are equivalent to the cancellation of gauge and mixed gauge-gravitational anomalies in F-theory compactifications to four and six dimensions. The identities consist in (co)homological relations between complex codimension-two cycles. The same set of relations, once evaluated on elliptic Calabi-Yau three-folds and four-folds, is shown to universally govern the structure of anomalies and their Green-Schwarz cancellation in six- and four-dimensional F-theory vacua, respectively. We furthermore conjecture that these relations hold not only within the cohomology ring, but even at the level of the Chow ring, i.e. as relations among codimension-two cycles modulo rational equivalence. We verify this conjecture in non-trivial examples with Abelian and non-Abelian gauge groups factors. Apart from governing the structure of local anomalies, the identities in the Chow ring relate different types of gauge backgrounds on elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau four-folds.

Gauge Backgrounds and Zero-Mode Counting in F-Theory

Computing the exact spectrum of charged massless matter is a crucial step towards understanding the effective field theory describing F-theory vacua in four dimensions. In this work we further develop a coherent framework to determine the charged massless matter in F-theory compactified on elliptic fourfolds, and demonstrate its application in a concrete example. The gauge background is represented, via duality with M-theory, by algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence. Intersection theory within the Chow ring allows us to extract coherent sheaves on the base of the elliptic fibration whose cohomology groups encode the charged zero-mode spectrum. The dimensions of these cohomology groups are computed with the help of modern techniques from algebraic geometry, which we implement in the software gap. We exemplify this approach in models with an Abelian and non-Abelian gauge group and observe jumps in the exact massless spectrum as the complex structure moduli are varied. An extended mathematical appendix gives a self-contained introduction to the algebro-geometric concepts underlying our framework.

Ubiquity of non-geometry in heterotic compactifications

We study the effect of quantum corrections on heterotic compactifications on elliptic fibrations away from the stable degeneration limit, elaborating on a recent observation by Malmendier and Morrison. We show that already for the simplest non-trivial elliptic fibration the effect is quite dramatic: the $I_1$ degeneration with trivial gauge background dynamically splits into two T-fects with monodromy around each T-fect being (conjugate to) T-duality along one of the legs of the $T^2$. This implies that almost every elliptic heterotic compactification becomes a non-geometric T-fold away from the stable degeneration limit. We also point out a subtlety due to this non-geometric splitting at finite fiber size. It arises when determining, via heterotic/F-theory duality, the SCFTs associated to a small number of pointlike instantons probing heterotic ADE singularities. Along the way we resolve various puzzles in the literature.

Heterotic T-fects, 6D SCFTs, and F-Theory

We study the $(1,0)$ six-dimensional SCFTs living on defects of non-geometric heterotic backgrounds (T-fects) preserving a $E_7\times E_8$ subgroup of $E_8\times E_8$. These configurations can be dualized explicitly to F-theory on elliptic K3-fibered non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds. We find that the majority of the resulting dual threefolds contain non-resolvable singularities. In those cases in which we can resolve the singularities we explicitly determine the SCFTs living on the defect. We find a form of duality in which distinct defects are described by the same IR fixed point. For instance, we find that a subclass of non-geometric defects are described by the SCFT arising from small heterotic instantons on ADE singularities.

Fluxes in F-theory Compactifications on Genus-One Fibrations

We initiate the construction of gauge fluxes in F-theory compactifications on genus-one fibrations which only have a multi-section as opposed to a section. F-theory on such spaces gives rise to discrete gauge symmetries in the effective action. We generalize the transversality conditions on gauge fluxes known for elliptic fibrations by taking into account the properties of the available multi-section. We test these general conditions by constructing all vertical gauge fluxes in a bisection model with gauge group SU(5) x Z2. The non-abelian anomalies are shown to vanish. These flux solutions are dynamically related to fluxes on a fibration with gauge group SU(5) x U(1) by a conifold transition. Considerations of flux quantization reveal an arithmetic constraint on certain intersection numbers on the base which must necessarily be satisfied in a smooth geometry. Combined with the proposed transversality conditions on the fluxes these conditions are shown to imply cancellation of the discrete Z2 gauge anomalies as required by general consistency considerations.

On Discrete Symmetries and Torsion Homology in F-Theory

We study the relation between discrete gauge symmetries in F-theory compactifications and torsion homology on the associated Calabi-Yau manifold. Focusing on the simplest example of a $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry, we show that there are two physically distinct ways that such a discrete gauge symmetry can arise. First, compactifications of M-Theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds which support a genus-one fibration with a bi-section are known to be dual to six-dimensional F-theory vacua with a $\mathbb Z_2$ gauge symmetry. We show that the resulting five-dimensional theories do not have a $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry but that the latter emerges only in the F-theory decompactification limit. Accordingly the genus-one fibred Calabi-Yau manifolds do not exhibit discrete torsion. Associated to the bi-section fibration is a Jacobian fibration which does support a section. Compactifying on these related but distinct varieties does lead to a $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry in five dimensions and, accordingly, we find explicitly an associated discrete torsion. We identify the expected particle and membrane system of the discrete symmetry in terms of wrapped M2 and M5 branes and present a field-theory description of the physics for both cases in terms of circle reductions of six-dimensional theories. Our results and methods generalise straightforwardly to larger discrete symmetries and to four-dimensional compactifications.

Discrete Gauge Symmetries by Higgsing in four-dimensional F-Theory Compactifications

We study F-Theory compactifications to four dimensions that exhibit discrete gauge symmetries. Geometrically these arise by deforming elliptic fibrations with two sections to a genus-one fibration with a bi-section. From a four-dimensional field-theory perspective they are remnant symmetries from a Higgsed U(1) gauge symmetry. We implement such symmetries in the presence of an additional SU(5) symmetry and associated matter fields, giving a geometric prescription for calculating the induced discrete charge for the matter curves and showing the absence of Yukawa couplings that are forbidden by this charge. We present a detailed map between the field theory and the geometry, including an identification of the Higgs field and the massless states before and after the Higgsing. Finally we show that the Higgsing of the U(1) induces a G-flux which precisely accounts for the change in the Calabi-Yau Euler number so as to leave the D3 tadpole invariant.

D7-Brane Moduli Space in Axion Monodromy and Fluxbrane Inflation

We analyze the quantum-corrected moduli space of D7-brane position moduli with special emphasis on inflationary model building. D7-brane deformation moduli are key players in two recently proposed inflationary scenarios: The first, D7-brane chaotic inflation, is a variant of axion monodromy inflation which allows for an effective 4d supergravity description. The second, fluxbrane inflation, is a stringy version of D-term hybrid inflation. Both proposals rely on the fact that D7-brane coordinates enjoy a shift-symmetric Kahler potential at large complex structure of the Calabi-Yau threefold, making them naturally lighter than other fields. This shift symmetry is inherited from the mirror-dual Type IIA Wilson line on a D6-brane at large volume. The inflaton mass can be provided by a tree-level term in the flux superpotential. It induces a monodromy and, if tuned to a sufficiently small value, can give rise to a large-field model of inflation. Alternatively, by a sensible flux choice one can completely avoid a tree-level mass term, in which case the inflaton potential is induced via loop corrections. The positive vacuum energy can then be provided by a D-term, leading to a small-field model of hybrid natural inflation. In the present paper, we continue to develop a detailed understanding of the D7-brane moduli space focusing among others on shift-symmetry-preserving flux choices, flux-induced superpotential in Type IIB/F-theory language, and loop corrections. While the inflationary applications represent our main physics motivation, we expect that some of our findings will be useful for other phenomenological issues involving 7-branes in Type IIB/F-theory constructions.

Mordell-Weil Torsion and the Global Structure of Gauge Groups in F-theory

We study the global structure of the gauge group $G$ of F-theory compactified on an elliptic fibration $Y$. The global properties of $G$ are encoded in the torsion subgroup of the Mordell-Weil group of rational sections of $Y$. Generalising the Shioda map to torsional sections we construct a specific integer divisor class on $Y$ as a fractional linear combination of the resolution divisors associated with the Cartan subalgebra of $G$. This divisor class can be interpreted as an element of the refined coweight lattice of the gauge group. As a result, the spectrum of admissible matter representations is strongly constrained and the gauge group is non-simply connected. We exemplify our results by a detailed analysis of the general elliptic fibration with Mordell-Weil group $\mathbb Z_2$ and $\mathbb Z_3$ as well as a further specialization to $\mathbb Z \oplus \mathbb Z_2$. Our analysis exploits the representation of these fibrations as hypersurfaces in toric geometry.

Chow groups, Deligne cohomology and massless matter in F-theory

We propose a method to compute the exact number of charged localized massless matter states in an F-theory compactification on a Calabi-Yau 4-fold with non-trivial 3-form data. Our starting point is the description of the 3-form data via Deligne cohomology. A refined cycle map allows us to specify concrete elements therein in terms of the second Chow group of the 4-fold, i.e. rational equivalence classes of algebraic 2-cycles. We use intersection theory within the Chow ring to extract from this data a line bundle class on the curves in the base of the fibration on which charged matter is localized. The associated cohomology groups are conjectured to count the exact massless spectrum, in agreement with general patterns in Type IIB compactifications with 7-branes. We exemplify our approach by calculating the massless spectrum in an SU(5) x U(1) toy model based on an elliptic 4-fold with an extra section. The explicit evaluation of the cohomology classes is performed with the help of the cohomCalg-algorithm by Blumenhagen et al.

SU(5) Tops with Multiple U(1)s in F-theory

We study F-theory compactifications with up to two Abelian gauge group factors that are based on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds describable as generic hypersurfaces. Special emphasis is put on elliptic fibrations based on generic Bl^2 P^2[3]-fibrations. These exhibit a Mordell-Weil group of rank two corresponding to two extra rational sections which give rise to two Abelian gauge group factors. We show that an alternative description of the same geometry as a complete intersection makes the existence of a holomorphic zero-section manifest, on the basis of which we compute the U(1) generators and a class of gauge fluxes. We analyse the fibre degenerations responsible for the appearance of localised charged matter states, whose charges, interactions and chiral index we compute geometrically. We implement an additional SU(5) gauge group by constructing the four inequivalent toric tops giving rise to SU(5) x U(1) x U(1) gauge symmetry and analyse the matter content. We demonstrate that notorious non-flat points can be avoided in well-defined Calabi-Yau 4-folds. These methods are applied to the remaining possible hypersurface fibrations with one generic Abelian gauge factor. We analyse the local limit of our SU(5) x U(1) x U(1) models and show that one of our models is not embeddable into E8 due to recombination of matter curves that cannot be described as a Higgsing of E8. We argue that such recombination forms a general mechanism that opens up new model building possibilities in F-theory.

Explicit de Sitter Flux Vacua for Global String Models with Chiral Matter

We address the open question of performing an explicit stabilisation of all closed string moduli (including dilaton, complex structure and Kaehler moduli) in fluxed type IIB Calabi-Yau compactifications with chiral matter. Using toric geometry we construct Calabi-Yau manifolds with del Pezzo singularities. D-branes located at such singularities can support the Standard Model gauge group and matter content. In order to control complex structure moduli stabilisation we consider Calabi-Yau manifolds which exhibit a discrete symmetry that reduces the effective number of complex structure moduli. We calculate the corresponding periods in the symplectic basis of invariant three-cycles and find explicit flux vacua for concrete examples. We compute the values of the flux superpotential and the string coupling at these vacua. Starting from these explicit complex structure solutions, we obtain AdS and dS minima where the Kaehler moduli are stabilised by a mixture of D-terms, non-perturbative and perturbative alpha'-corrections as in the LARGE Volume Scenario. In the considered example the visible sector lives at a dP_6 singularity which can be higgsed to the phenomenologically interesting class of models at the dP_3 singularity.
