AWEsome: An open-source test platform for airborne wind energy systems

In this paper we present AWEsome (Airborne Wind Energy Standardized Open-source Model Environment), a test platform for airborne wind energy systems that consists of low-cost hardware and is entirely based on open-source software. It can hence be used without the need of large financial investments, in particular by research groups and startups to acquire first experiences in their flight operations, to test novel control strategies or technical designs, or for usage in public relations. Our system consists of a modified off-the-shelf model aircraft that is controlled by the pixhawk autopilot hardware and the ardupilot software for fixed wing aircraft. The aircraft is attached to the ground by a tether. We have implemented new flight modes for the autonomous tethered flight of the aircraft along periodic patterns. We present the principal functionality of our algorithms. We report on first successful tests of these modes in real flights.

Cutting through form factors and cross sections of non-protected operators in N=4 SYM

We study the form factors of the Konishi operator, the prime example of non-protected operators in N=4 SYM theory, via the on-shell unitarity methods. Since the Konishi operator is not protected by supersymmetry, its form factors share many features with those in QCD, such as the occurrence of rational terms and of UV divergences that require renormalization. A subtle point is that this operator depends on the spacetime dimension. This requires a modification when calculating its form factors via unitarity methods. We derive a rigorous prescription that implements this modification to all loop orders and obtain the two-point form factor up to two-loop order and the three-point form factor to one-loop order. From these form factors, we construct an IR-finite cross section type quantity, namely the inclusive decay rate of the (off-shell) Konishi operator to any final (on-shell) state. Via the optical theorem, it is connected to the imaginary part of the two-point correlation function. We extract the Konishi anomalous dimension up to two-loop order from it.

Two-Loop SL(2) Form Factors and Maximal Transcendentality

Form factors of composite operators in the SL(2) sector of N=4 SYM theory are studied up to two loops via the on-shell unitarity method. The non-compactness of this subsector implies the novel feature and technical challenge of an unlimited number of loop momenta in the integrand's numerator. At one loop, we derive the full minimal form factor to all orders in the dimensional regularisation parameter. At two loops, we construct the complete integrand for composite operators with an arbitrary number of covariant derivatives, and we obtain the remainder functions as well as the dilatation operator for composite operators with up to three covariant derivatives. The remainder functions reveal curious patterns suggesting a hidden maximal uniform transcendentality for the full form factor. Finally, we speculate about an extension of these patterns to QCD.

On a CFT limit of planar $γ_i$-deformed $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory

We show that an integrable four-dimensional non-unitary field theory that was recently proposed as a certain limit of the $γ_i$-deformed $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory is incomplete and not conformal -- not even in the planar limit. We complete this theory by double-trace couplings and find conformal one-loop fix-points when admitting respective complex coupling constants. These couplings must not be neglected in the planar limit, as they can contribute to planar multi-point functions. Based on our results for certain two-loop planar anomalous dimensions, we propose tests of integrability.

On-Shell Methods for the Two-Loop Dilatation Operator and Finite Remainders

We compute the two-loop minimal form factors of all operators in the SU(2) sector of planar N=4 SYM theory via on-shell unitarity methods. From the UV divergence of this result, we obtain the two-loop dilatation operator in this sector. Furthermore, we calculate the corresponding finite remainder functions. Since the operators break the supersymmetry, the remainder functions do not have the property of uniform transcendentality. However, the leading transcendentality part turns out to be universal and is identical to the corresponding BPS expressions. The remainder functions are shown to satisfy linear relations which can be explained by Ward identities of form factors following from R-symmetry.

Non-conformality of gamma_i-deformed N=4 SYM theory

We show that the gamma_i-deformation, which was proposed as candidate gauge theory for a non-supersymmetric three-parameter deformation of the AdS/CFT correspondence, is not conformally invariant due to a running double-trace coupling - not even in the 't Hooft limit. Moreover, this non-conformality cannot be cured when we extend the theory by adding at tree-level arbitrary multi-trace couplings that obey certain minimal consistency requirements. Our findings suggest a possible connection between this breakdown of conformal invariance and a puzzling divergence recently encountered in the integrability-based descriptions of two-loop finite-size corrections for the single-trace operator of two identical chiral fields. We propose a test to clarify this.

The complete one-loop dilatation operator of planar real beta-deformed N=4 SYM theory

We determine the missing finite-size corrections to the asymptotic one-loop dilatation operator of the real $β$-deformed $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory for the gauge groups $U(N)$ and $SU(N)$ in the 't Hooft limit. In the $SU(N)$ case, the absence of the $U(1)$ field components leads to a new kind of finite-size effect, which we call prewrapping. We classify which states are potentially affected by prewrapping at generic loop orders and comment on the necessity to include it into the integrability-based description. As a further result, we identify classes of $n$-point correlation functions which at all loop orders in the planar theory are given by the values of their undeformed counterparts. Finally, we determine the superconformal multiplet structure and one-loop anomalous dimensions of all single-trace states with classical scaling dimension $Δ_0 \leq 4.5$.

A piece of cake: the ground-state energies in gamma_i-deformed N=4 SYM theory

In the non-supersymmetric gamma_i-deformed N=4 SYM theory, the scaling dimensions of the operators tr[Z^L] composed of L scalar fields Z receive finite-size wrapping and prewrapping corrections in the 't Hooft limit. In this paper, we calculate these scaling dimensions to leading wrapping order directly from Feynman diagrams. For L>=3, the result is proportional to the maximally transcendental `cake' integral. It matches with an earlier result obtained from the integrability-based Luescher corrections, TBA and Y-system equations. At L=2, where the integrability-based equations yield infinity, we find a finite rational result. This result is renormalization-scheme dependent due to the non-vanishing beta-function of an induced quartic scalar double-trace coupling, on which we have reported earlier. This explicitly shows that conformal invariance is broken - even in the 't Hooft limit.

The spectrum of tachyons in AdS/CFT

We analyze the spectrum of open strings stretched between a D-brane and an anti-D-brane in planar AdS/CFT using various tools. We focus on open strings ending on two giant gravitons with different orientation in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ and study the spectrum of string excitations using the following approaches: open spin-chain, boundary asymptotic Bethe ansatz and boundary thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (BTBA). We find agreement between a perturbative high order diagrammatic calculation in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM and the leading finite-size boundary Luscher correction. We study the ground state energy of the system at finite coupling by deriving and numerically solving a set of BTBA equations. While the numerics give reasonable results at small coupling, they break down at finite coupling when the total energy of the string gets close to zero, possibly indicating that the state turns tachyonic. The location of the breakdown is also predicted analytically.

Superspace calculation of the three-loop dilatation operator of N=4 SYM theory

We derive the three-loop dilatation operator of the flavor SU(2) subsector of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in the planar limit by a direct Feynman diagram calculation in N=1 superspace. The transcendentality three contributions which appear in intermediate steps cancel among each other, leaving a rational result which confirms the predictions from integrability. We derive finiteness conditions that allow us to avoid the explicit evaluation of entire classes of Feynman graphs and also yield constraints on the D-algebra manipulations. Based on these results, we discover universal cancellation mechanisms. As a check for the consistency of our result, we verify the cancellation of all higher-order poles.

From N=4 gauge theory to N=2 conformal QCD: three-loop mixing of scalar composite operators

We derive the planar dilatation operator in the closed subsector of scalar composite operators of an N=2 superconformal quiver gauge theory to three loops. By tuning the ratio of its two gauge couplings we interpolate between a Z_2 orbifold of N=4 SYM theory and N=2 superconformal QCD. We find zeta(3) contributions at three loops that disappear when the theory is at the orbifold point. They are responsible for imaginary contributions to the dispersion relation of a single scalar excitation in the spin-chain picture. This points towards an interpretation of the individual scalar excitations as effective rather than as elementary magnons. We argue that the elementary excitations should be associated with certain fermions and covariant derivatives, and that integrability in the respective subsectors should persist at least to two loops.

Superspace methods for the computation of wrapping effects in the standard and beta-deformed N=4 SYM

We review the general procedure for the field-theoretical computation of wrapping effects in standard and beta-deformed N=4 super Yang-Mills by means of N=1 superspace techniques. In the undeformed theory, these methods allowed to find explicit results at four and five loops for two-impurity operators. In the deformed case, a general expression for the finite-size correction to the anomalous dimension of single-impurity operators at the critical order was obtained.

Five-loop anomalous dimension at critical wrapping order in N=4 SYM

We compute the anomalous dimension of a length-five operator at five-loop order in the SU(2) sector of N=4 SYM theory in the planar limit. This is critical wrapping order at five loops. The result is obtained perturbatively by means of N=1 superspace techniques. Our result from perturbation theory confirms explicitly the formula conjectured in arXiv:0901.4864 for the five-loop anomalous dimension of twist-three operators. We also explicitly obtain the same result by employing the recently proposed Y-system.

Black strings in AdS_5

We present non-extremal magnetic black string solutions in five-dimensional gauged supergravity. The conformal infinity is the product of time and S^1xS_h, where S_h denotes a compact Riemann surface of genus h. The construction is based on both analytical and numerical techniques. We compute the holographic stress tensor, the Euclidean action and the conserved charges of the solutions and show that the latter satisfy a Smarr-type formula. The phase structure is determined in the canonical ensemble, and it is shown that there is a first order phase transition from small to large black strings, which disappears above a certain critical magnetic charge that is obtained numerically. For another particular value of the magnetic charge, that corresponds to a twisting of the dual super Yang-Mills theory, the conformal anomalies coming from the background curvature and those arising from the coupling to external gauge fields exactly cancel. We also obtain supersymmetric solutions describing waves propagating on extremal BPS magnetic black strings, and show that they possess a Siklos-Virasoro reparametrization invariance.

Holographic flavour in the N=1 Polchinski-Strassler background

To endow the N=1* SYM theory with quarks, we embed D7-brane probes into its gravity dual, known as the Polchinski-Strassler background. The non-vanishing 3-form flux G_3 in the background is dual to mass terms for the three adjoint chiral superfields, deforming the N=4 SYM theory to the N=1* SYM theory. We keep its three mass parameters independent. This generalizes our analysis in hep-th/0610276 for the N=2* SYM theory. We work at second order in the mass perturbation, i.e. G_3 and its backreaction on the background are considered perturbatively up to this order. We find analytic solutions for the embeddings which in general depend also on angular variables. We discuss the properties of the solutions and give error estimates on our approximation. By applying the method of holographic renormalization, we show that in all cases the embeddings are at least consistent with supersymmetry.

Adding D7-branes to the Polchinski-Strassler gravity background

We motivate and summarize our analysis of hep-th/0610276 in which we consider D7-brane probe embeddings in the Polchinski-Strassler background with N=2 supersymmetry. The corresponding dual gauge theory is given by the N=2* theory with fundamental matter.
