Concentration inequalities for functionals of Poisson cylinder processes

Random union sets $Z$ associated with stationary Poisson processes of $k$-cylinders in $\mathbb{R}^d$ are considered. Under general conditions on the typical cylinder base a concentration inequality for the volume of $Z$ restricted to a compact window is derived. Assuming convexity of the typical cylinder base and isotropy of $Z$ a concentration inequality for intrinsic volumes of arbitrary order is established. A number of special cases are discussed, for example the case when the cylinder bases arise from a random rotation of a fixed convex body. Also the situation of expanding windows is studied. Special attention is payed to the case $k=0$, which corresponds to the classical Boolean model.

High-dimensional limit theorems for random vectors in $\ell_p^n$-balls. II

In this article we prove three fundamental types of limit theorems for the $q$-norm of random vectors chosen at random in an $\ell_p^n$-ball in high dimensions. We obtain a central limit theorem, a moderate deviations as well as a large deviations principle when the underlying distribution of the random vectors belongs to a general class introduced by Barthe, Guédon, Mendelson, and Naor. It includes the normalized volume and the cone probability measure as well as projections of these measures as special cases. Two new applications to random and non-random projections of $\ell_p^n$-balls to lower-dimensional subspaces are discussed as well. The text is a continuation of [Kabluchko, Prochno, Thäle: High-dimensional limit theorems for random vectors in $\ell_p^n$-balls, Commun. Contemp. Math. (2019)].

Cones generated by random points on half-spheres and convex hulls of Poisson point processes

Let $U_1,U_2,\ldots$ be random points sampled uniformly and independently from the $d$-dimensional upper half-sphere. We show that, as $n\to\infty$, the $f$-vector of the $(d+1)$-dimensional convex cone $C_n$ generated by $U_1,\ldots,U_n$ weakly converges to a certain limiting random vector, without any normalization. We also show convergence of all moments of the $f$-vector of $C_n$ and identify the limiting constants for the expectations. We prove that the expected Grassmann angles of $C_n$ can be expressed through the expected $f$-vector. This yields convergence of expected Grassmann angles and conic intrinsic volumes and answers thereby a question of Bárány, Hug, Reitzner and Schneider [Random points in halfspheres, Rand. Struct. Alg., 2017]. Our approach is based on the observation that the random cone $C_n$ weakly converges, after a suitable rescaling, to a random cone whose intersection with the tangent hyperplane of the half-sphere at its north pole is the convex hull of the Poisson point process with power-law intensity function proportional to $\|x\|^{-(d+γ)}$, where $γ=1$. We compute the expected number of facets, the expected intrinsic volumes and the expected $T$-functional of this random convex hull for arbitrary $γ>0$.

Splitting tessellations in spherical spaces

The concept of splitting tessellations and splitting tessellation processes in spherical spaces of dimension $d\geq 2$ is introduced. Expectations, variances and covariances of spherical curvature measures induced by a splitting tessellation are studied using tools from spherical integral geometry. Also the spherical pair-correlation function of the $(d-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure is computed explicitly and compared to its analogue for Poisson great hypersphere tessellations. Finally, the typical cell distribution and the distribution of the typical spherical maximal face of any dimension $k\in\{1,\ldots,d-1\}$ are expressed as mixtures of the related distributions of Poisson great hypersphere tessellations. This in turn is used to determine the expected length and the precise birth time distribution of the typical maximal spherical segment of a splitting tessellation.

Surface area deviation between smooth convex bodies and polytopes

The deviation of a general convex body with twice differentiable boundary and an arbitrarily positioned polytope with a given number of vertices is studied. The paper considers the case where the deviation is measured in terms of the surface areas of the involved sets, more precisely, by what is called the surface area deviation. The proof uses arguments and constructions from probability, convex and integral geometry. The bound is closely related to $p$-affine surface areas.

Gaussian fluctuations for high-dimensional random projections of $\ell_p^n$-balls

In this paper, we study high-dimensional random projections of $\ell_p^n$-balls. More precisely, for any $n\in\mathbb N$ let $E_n$ be a random subspace of dimension $k_n\in\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and $X_n$ be a random point in the unit ball of $\ell_p^n$. Our work provides a description of the Gaussian fluctuations of the Euclidean norm $\|P_{E_n}X_n\|_2$ of random orthogonal projections of $X_n$ onto $E_n$. In particular, under the condition that $k_n\to\infty$ it is shown that these random variables satisfy a central limit theorem, as the space dimension $n$ tends to infinity. Moreover, if $k_n\to\infty$ fast enough, we provide a Berry-Esseen bound on the rate of convergence in the central limit theorem. At the end we provide a discussion of the large deviations counterpart to our central limit theorem.

Sanov-type large deviations in Schatten classes

Denote by $λ_1(A), \ldots, λ_n(A)$ the eigenvalues of an $(n\times n)$-matrix $A$. Let $Z_n$ be an $(n\times n)$-matrix chosen uniformly at random from the matrix analogue to the classical $\ell_ p^n$-ball, defined as the set of all self-adjoint $(n\times n)$-matrices satisfying $\sum_{k=1}^n |λ_k(A)|^p\leq 1$. We prove a large deviations principle for the (random) spectral measure of the matrix $n^{1/p} Z_n$. As a consequence, we obtain that the spectral measure of $n^{1/p} Z_n$ converges weakly almost surely to a non-random limiting measure given by the Ullman distribution, as $n\to\infty$. The corresponding results for random matrices in Schatten trace classes, where eigenvalues are replaced by the singular values, are also presented.

Intersection of unit balls in classical matrix ensembles

We study the volume of the intersection of two unit balls from one of the classical matrix ensembles GOE, GUE and GSE, as the dimension tends to infinity. This can be regarded as a matrix analogue of a result of Schechtman and Schmuckenschläger for classical $\ell_p$-balls [Schechtman and Schmuckenschläger, GAFA Lecture Notes, 1991]. The proof of our result is based on two ingredients, which are of independent interest. The first one is a weak law of large numbers for a point chosen uniformly at random in the unit ball of such a matrix ensemble. The second one is an explicit computation of the asymptotic volume of such matrix unit balls, which in turn is based on the theory of logarithmic potentials with external fields.

Exact asymptotic volume and volume ratio of Schatten unit balls

The unit ball $B_p^n(\mathbb{R})$ of the finite-dimensional Schatten trace class $\mathcal S_p^n$ consists of all real $n\times n$ matrices $A$ whose singular values $s_1(A),\ldots,s_n(A)$ satisfy $s_1^p(A)+\ldots+s_n^p(A)\leq 1$, where $p>0$. Saint Raymond [Studia Math.\ 80, 63--75, 1984] showed that the limit $$ \lim_{n\to\infty} n^{1/2 + 1/p} \big(\text{Vol}\, B_p^n(\mathbb{R})\big)^{1/n^2} $$ exists in $(0,\infty)$ and provided both lower and upper bounds. In this paper we determine the precise limiting constant based on ideas from the theory of logarithmic potentials with external fields. A similar result is obtained for complex Schatten balls. As an application we compute the precise asymptotic volume ratio of the Schatten $p$-balls, as $n\to\infty$, thereby extending Saint Raymond's estimate in the case of the nuclear norm ($p=1$) to the full regime $1\leq p \leq \infty$ with exact limiting behavior.

Gaussian polytopes: a cumulant-based approach

The random convex hull of a Poisson point process in $\mathbb{R}^d$ whose intensity measure is a multiple of the standard Gaussian measure on $\mathbb{R}^d$ is investigated. The purpose of this paper is to invent a new viewpoint on these Gaussian polytopes that is based on cumulants and the general large deviation theory of Saulis and Statulevičius. This leads to new and powerful concentration inequalities, moment bounds, Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund-type strong laws of large numbers, central limit theorems and moderate deviation principles for the volume and the face numbers. Corresponding results are also derived for the empirical measures induced by these key geometric functionals, taking thereby care of their spatial profiles.

Expected intrinsic volumes and facet numbers of random beta-polytopes

Let $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ be i.i.d.\ random points in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space sampled according to one of the following probability densities: $$ f_{d,β} (x) = \text{const} \cdot (1-\|x\|^2)^β, \quad \|x\|\leq 1, \quad \text{(the beta case)} $$ and $$ \tilde f_{d,β} (x) = \text{const} \cdot (1+\|x\|^2)^{-β}, \quad x\in\mathbb{R}^d, \quad \text{(the beta' case).} $$ We compute exactly the expected intrinsic volumes and the expected number of facets of the convex hull of $X_1,\ldots,X_n$. Asymptotic formulae where obtained previously by Affentranger [The convex hull of random points with spherically symmetric distributions, 1991]. By studying the limits of the beta case when $β\downarrow -1$, respectively $β\uparrow +\infty$, we can also cover the models in which $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ are uniformly distributed on the unit sphere or normally distributed, respectively. We obtain similar results for the random polytopes defined as the convex hulls of $\pm X_1,\ldots,\pm X_n$ and $0,X_1,\ldots,X_n$. One of the main tools used in the proofs is the Blaschke-Petkantschin formula.

Poisson approximation of the length spectrum of random surfaces

Multivariate Poisson approximation of the length spectrum of random surfaces is studied by means of the Chen-Stein method. This approach delivers simple and explicit error bounds in Poisson limit theorems. They are used to prove that Poisson approximation applies to curves of length up to order $o(\log\log g)$ with $g$ being the genus of the surface.

High-dimensional limit theorems for random vectors in $\ell_p^n$-balls

In this paper, we prove a multivariate central limit theorem for $\ell_q$-norms of high-dimensional random vectors that are chosen uniformly at random in an $\ell_p^n$-ball. As a consequence, we provide several applications on the intersections of $\ell_p^n$-balls in the flavor of Schechtman and Schmuckenschläger and obtain a central limit theorem for the length of a projection of an $\ell_p^n$-ball onto a line spanned by a random direction $θ\in\mathbb S^{n-1}$. The latter generalizes results obtained for the cube by Paouris, Pivovarov and Zinn and by Kabluchko, Litvak and Zaporozhets. Moreover, we complement our central limit theorems by providing a complete description of the large deviation behavior, which covers fluctuations far beyond the Gaussian scale. In the regime $1\leq p < q$ this displays in speed and rate function deviations of the $q$-norm on an $\ell_p^n$-ball obtained by Schechtman and Zinn, but we obtain explicit constants.

Intrinsic volumes and Gaussian polytopes: the missing piece of the jigsaw

The intrinsic volumes of Gaussian polytopes are considered. A lower variance bound for these quantities is proved, showing that, under suitable normalization, the variances converge to strictly positive limits. The implications of this missing piece of the jigsaw in the theory of Gaussian polytopes are discussed.

Large deviations for high-dimensional random projections of $\ell_p^n$-balls

The paper provides a description of the large deviation behavior for the Euclidean norm of projections of $\ell_p^n$-balls to high-dimensional random subspaces. More precisely, for each integer $n\geq 1$, let $k_n\in\{1,\ldots,n-1\}$, $E^{(n)}$ be a uniform random $k_n$-dimensional subspace of $\mathbb R^n$ and $X^{(n)}$ be a random point that is uniformly distributed in the $\ell_p^n$-ball of $\mathbb R^n$ for some $p\in[1,\infty]$. Then the Euclidean norms $\|P_{E^{(n)}}X^{(n)}\|_2$ of the orthogonal projections are shown to satisfy a large deviation principle as the space dimension $n$ tends to infinity. Its speed and rate function are identified, making thereby visible how they depend on $p$ and the growth of the sequence of subspace dimensions $k_n$. As a key tool we prove a probabilistic representation of $\|P_{E^{(n)}}X^{(n)}\|_2$ which allows us to separate the influence of the parameter $p$ and the subspace dimension $k_n$.

On the isotropic constant of random polytopes with vertices on an $\ell_p$-sphere

The symmetric convex hull of random points that are independent and distributed according to the cone probability measure on the $\ell_p$-unit sphere of $\mathbb R^n$ for some $1\leq p < \infty$ is considered. We prove that these random polytopes have uniformly absolutely bounded isotropic constants with overwhelming probability. This generalizes the result for the Euclidean sphere ($p=2$) obtained by D. Alonso-Gutiérrez. The proof requires several different tools including a probabilistic representation of the cone measure due to G. Schechtman and J. Zinn and moment estimates for sums of independent random variables with log-concave tails originating in the work of E. Gluskin and S. Kwapień.

Monotonicity of facet numbers of random convex hulls

Let $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ be independent random points that are distributed according to a probability measure on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and let $P_n$ be the random convex hull generated by $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ ($n\geq d+1$). Natural classes of probability distributions are characterized for which, by means of Blaschke-Petkantschin formulae from integral geometry, one can show that the mean facet number of $P_n$ is strictly monotonically increasing in $n$.
