Nonlinear Fourier Analysis

The nonlinear Fourier transform discussed in these notes is the map from the potential of a one dimensional discrete Dirac operator to the transmission and reflection coefficients thereof. Emphasis is on this being a nonlinear variant of the classical Fourier series, and on nonlinear analogues of classical analytic facts about Fourier series. These notes are a summary of a series of lectures given in 2003 at the Park City Mathematics Institute.

$L^p$ estimates for the Hilbert transforms along a one-variable vector field

Stein conjectured that the Hilbert transform in the direction of a vector field is bounded on, say, $L^2$ whenever $v$ is Lipschitz. We establish a wide range of $L^p$ estimates for this operator when $v$ is a measurable, non-vanishing, one-variable vector field in $\bbr ^2$. Aside from an $L^2$ estimate following from a simple trick with Carleson's theorem, these estimates were unknown previously. This paper is closely related to a recent paper of the first author (\cite{B2}).

The Hilbert transform does not map L^1(Mw) to L^{1,\infty}(w)

We prove that the analogue for the Hilbert transform of a classical weighted inequality by Fefferman and Stein for the Hardy Littlewood maximal operator does not hold. This is a sequel to paper arXiv:1008.3943 by the first author, which shows the same for the general Haar multiplier operator.

Variational estimates for paraproducts

We generalize a family of variation norm estimates of Lepingle with endpoint estimates of Bourgain and Pisier-Xu to a family of variational estimates for paraproducts, both in the discrete and the continuous setting. This expands on work of Friz and Victoir, our focus being on the continuous case and an expanded range of variation exponents.

A variation norm Carleson theorem

We strengthen the Carleson-Hunt theorem by proving $L^p$ estimates for the $r$-variation of the partial sum operators for Fourier series and integrals, for $p>\max\{r',2\}$. Four appendices are concerned with transference, a variation norm Menshov-Paley-Zygmund theorem, and applications to nonlinear Fourier transforms and ergodic theory.

New uniform bounds for a Walsh model of the bilinear Hilbert transform

We prove old and new $L^p$ bounds for the quartile operator, a Walsh model of the bilinear Hilbert transform, uniformly in the parameter that models degeneration of the bilinear Hilbert transform. We obtain the full range of exponents that can be expected from known bounds in the degenerate and non-degenerate cases. For the new estimates with exponents p close to 1 the argument relies on a multi-frequency Calderon-Zygmund decomposition.

Multilinear singular operators with fractional rank

We prove bounds for multilinear operators on $\R^d$ given by multipliers which are singular along a $k$ dimensional subspace. The new case of interest is when the rank $k/d$ is not an integer. Connections with the concept of {\em true complexity} from Additive Combinatorics are also investigated.

On the two dimensional Bilinear Hilbert Transform

We investigate the Bilinear Hilbert Transform in the plane and the pointwise convergence of bilinear averages in Ergodic theory, arising from $\Z^2$ actions. Our techniques combine novel one and a half dimensional phase-space analysis with more standard one dimensional theory.

Multi-linear multipliers associated to simplexes of arbitrary length

In this article we prove that the $n$-linear operator whose symbol is the characteristic function of the simplex $Δ_n = ξ_1 < ... < ξ_n$ is bounded from $L^2 \times ... \times L^2$ into $L^{2/n}$, generalizing in this way our previous work on the "bi-est" operator (which corresponds to the case $n=3$) as well as Lacey-Thiele theorem on the bi-linear Hilbert transform (which corresponds to the case $n=2$).

Breaking the duality in the return times theorem

We prove Bourgain's Return Times Theorem for a range of exponents $p$ and $q$ that are outside the duality range. An oscillation result is used to prove hitherto unknown almost everywhere convergence for the signed average analog of Bourgain's averages. As an immediate corollary we obtain a Wiener-Wintner type of result for the ergodic Hilbert series.

The Bi-Carleson operator

We prove $L^p$ estimates for the Bi-Carleson operator, which is a natural hybrid of the Carleson maximal operator and the bilinear Hilbert transform. The methods used are essentially based on the treatment of the Walsh analogue of the operator in the prequel of this paper, but with additional technicalities due to the fact that in the Fourier model one cannot obtain perfect localization in both space and frequency.

Multi-parameter paraproducts

We prove that the classical Coifman-Meyer theorem holds on any polydisc $\T^d$ of arbitrary dimension $d\geq 1$.

Wave equation and multiplier estimates on ax+b groups

Let L be the distinguished Laplacian on certain semidirect products of R by R^n which are of ax+b type. We prove pointwise estimates for the convolution kernels of spectrally localized wave operators for arbitrary time and scaling parameter.

On multilinear oscillatory integrals, nonsingular and singular

Basic questions concerning nonsingular multilinear operators with oscillatory factors are posed and partially answered. Lebesgue space norm inequalities are established for multilinear integral operators of Calderon-Zygmund type which incorporate oscillatory factors exp(iP), where P is a real-valued polynomial with large coefficients. A related problem concerning upper bounds for measures of sublevel sets is solved.

Carleson measures, trees, extrapolation, and $T(b)$ theorems

The theory of Carleson measures, stopping time arguments, and atomic decompositions has been well-established in harmonic analysis. More recent is the theory of phase space analysis from the point of view of wave packets on tiles, tree selection algorithms, and tree size estimates. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that the two theories are in fact closely related, by taking existing results and reproving them in a unified setting. In particular we give a dyadic version of extrapolation for Carleson measures, with two separate proofs, as well as a two-sided local dyadic $T(b)$ theorem which generalizes earlier $T(b)$ theorems of David, Journe, Semmes, and Christ.

A Carleson type theorem for a Cantor group model of the scattering transform

We consider a basic $d$-adic model for the scattering transform on the line. We prove $L^2$ bounds for this scattering transform and a weak $L^2$ bound for a Carleson type maximal operator. The latter implies boundedness of $d$-adic models of generalized eigenfunctions of Dirac type operators with potential in $L^2(R)$. We show that this result cannot be obtained by estimating the terms in the natural multilinear expansion of the scattering transform.
