Coherently controlled entanglement generation in a binary Bose-Einstein condensate

Considering a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential, a method to generate a Bell state consisting of two spatially separated condensates is suggested. For repulsive interactions, the required tunnelling control is achieved numerically by varying the amplitude of a sinusoidal potential difference between the wells. Both numerical and analytical calculations reveal the emergence of a highly entangled mesoscopic state.

Coherent control of population transfer between communicating defects

Population transfer between two identical, communicating defects in a one-dimensional tight-binding lattice can be systematically controlled by external time-periodic forcing. Employing a force with slowly changing amplitude, the time it takes to transfer a particle from one defect to the other can be altered over several orders of magnitude. An analytical expression is derived which shows how the forcing effectively changes the energy splitting between the defect states, and numerical model calculations illustrate the possibility of coherent control of the transfer.

Analog of photon-assisted tunneling in a Bose-Einstein condensate

We study many-body tunneling of a small Bose-Einstein condensate in a periodically modulated, tilted double-well potential. Periodic modulation of the trapping potential leads to an analog of photon-assisted tunneling, with distinct signatures of the interparticle interaction visible in the amount of particles transferred from one well to the other. In particular, under experimentally accessible conditions there exist well-developed half-integer Shapiro-like resonances.

Superfluid-insulator transition in a periodically driven optical lattice

We demonstrate that the transition from a superfluid to a Mott insulator in the Bose-Hubbard model can be induced by an oscillating force through an effective renormalization of the tunneling matrix element. The mechanism involves adiabatic following of Floquet states, and can be tested experimentally with Bose-Einstein condensates in periodically driven optical lattices. Its extension from small to very large systems yields nontrivial information on the condensate dynamics.

Coherent control of mesoscopic tunneling in a Bose-Einstein condensate

For a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well, an appropriate time-dependent modulation of the trapping potential counter-acts the "self-trapping" effects of the interactions, thereby allowing tunneling between the wells. It is demonstrated numerically that this modulation can be employed for transferring the condensate from one well to the other in a controlled way. Moreover it allows the production of mesoscopic entangled states on short time scales.

Ground-state energy and depletions for a dilute binary Bose gas

When calculating the ground-state energy of a weakly interacting Bose gas with the help of the customary contact pseudopotential, one meets an artifical ultraviolet divergence which is caused by the incorrect treatment of the true interparticle interactions at small distances. We argue that this problem can be avoided by retaining the actual, momentum-dependent interaction matrix elements, and use this insight for computing both the ground-state energy and the depletions of a binary Bose gas mixture. Even when considering the experimentally relevant case of equal masses of both species, the resulting expressions are quite involved, and no straightforward generalizations of the known single-species formulas. On the other hand, we demonstrate in detail how these latter formulas are recovered from our two-species results in the limit of vanishing interspecies interaction.

Ground state energy of a homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate beyond Bogoliubov

The standard calculations of the ground-state energy of a homogeneous Bose gas rely on approximations which are physically reasonable but difficult to control. Lieb and Yngvason [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 2504 (1998)] have proved rigorously that the commonly accepted leading order term of the ground state energy is correct in the zero-density-limit. Here, strong indications are given that also the next to leading term is correct. It is shown that the first terms obtained in a perturbative treatment provide contributions which are lost in the Bogoliubov approach.

Bogoliubov speed of sound for a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate in a 3d optical lattice

We point out that the velocity of propagation of sound wavepackets in a Bose-Einstein condensate filling a three-dimensional cubic optical lattice undergoes a maximum with increasing lattice depth. For a realistic choice of parameters, the maximum sound velocity in a lattice condensate can exceed the sound velocity in a homogeneous condensate with the same average density by 30%. The maximum falls into the superfluid regime, and should be observable under currently achievable laboratory conditions.

Factorising numbers with a Bose-Einstein condensate

The problem to express a natural number N as a product of natural numbers without regard to order corresponds to a thermally isolated non-interacting Bose gas in a one-dimensional potential with logarithmic energy eigenvalues. This correspondence is used for characterising the probability distribution which governs the number of factors in a randomly selected factorisation of an asymptotically large N. Asymptotic upper bounds on both the skewness and the excess of this distribution, and on the total number of factorisations, are conjectured. The asymptotic formulas are checked against exact numerical data obtained with the help of recursion relations. It is also demonstrated that for large numbers which are the product of different primes the probability distribution approaches a Gaussian, while identical prime factors give rise to non-Gaussian statistics.
