From Retrieval to Weights: Parametric Individualization of Small Language Models with Individual Text Corpora

We approach a cognitive simulation perspective on episodic and semantic memory in multiple-choice question answering by incorporating text from individual text corpora (ITC) into retrieval-augmented generation and DoRA fine-tuning. We web-crawl the search histories of 515 participants who answered 36 multiple-choice knowledge items and analyze a stratified subsample of 150 participants. For each participant, one DoRA adapter consolidates their ITC into a small language model (SLM) whose baseline correctness falls below the participants' lowest quartile. The adapter measurably writes the ITC into the weights: it fits its own participant's held-out text better than other participants' texts (dz =1.27), an individuality effect that increases with ITC size in rank order. On the generalized knowledge test, however, the adapter adds knowledge rather than alignment with the individual: log-loss match improves, whereas match accuracy under a bias-corrected PMI readout does not, and retrieval adds nothing on top. Our results demonstrate that ITCs can be consolidated into the weights of SLMs, an encouraging basis for individualized tutoring agents, and we discuss how to move from there toward a realistic simulation of episodic and semantic memory at the individual level.

Individual Text Corpora Predict User-Specific Knowledge: Benchmarks of Individualized Knowledge Simulation

This study examines whether individual text corpora (ICs) from search histories can be used to simulate individual knowledge. We collected ICs from 316 adults, who answered 36 multiple-choice knowledge items, and compared several large language models (LLMs) on this task, of which only Qwen3-1.7B proved viable. After task-specific fine-tuning via Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA), Qwen3-1.7B outperformed both participants and a representative German norm sample on publicly available items. On non-public questions, however, the LLM performed worse than our participants, suggesting possible training data contamination for the public questions. When integrating ICs into retrieval-augmented generation to predict individual responses, LLM-participant Match accuracies significantly exceeded chance, which demonstrates a detectable individual knowledge signal. The probabilities assigned to the participants' answers were, however, low and far below the probability of correct answers, indicating poor calibration toward individual response patterns. Knowledge-gap prediction was sub-optimal, though it improved for corpora exceeding five million tokens. We discuss our entropy based evaluation benchmarks as calibration indices for individualized knowledge simulation.

Individual Text Corpora Predict Openness, Interests, Knowledge and Level of Education

Here we examine whether the personality dimension of openness to experience can be predicted from the individual google search history. By web scraping, individual text corpora (ICs) were generated from 214 participants with a mean number of 5 million word tokens. We trained word2vec models and used the similarities of each IC to label words, which were derived from a lexical approach of personality. These IC-label-word similarities were utilized as predictive features in neural models. For training and validation, we relied on 179 participants and held out a test sample of 35 participants. A grid search with varying number of predictive features, hidden units and boost factor was performed. As model selection criterion, we used R2 in the validation samples penalized by the absolute R2 difference between training and validation. The selected neural model explained 35% of the openness variance in the test sample, while an ensemble model with the same architecture often provided slightly more stable predictions for intellectual interests, knowledge in humanities and level of education. Finally, a learning curve analysis suggested that around 500 training participants are required for generalizable predictions. We discuss ICs as a complement or replacement of survey-based psychodiagnostics.
